Perspectives on the Influence of Crystal Size and Morphology on the Properties of Porous Framework Materials

Kinetics, Thermodynamics, and Mechanistic Studies of Arsenic Removal Utilizing Natural Soil as Adsorbent

The contamination of water sources with the heavy metal contaminant arsenic (As) causes substantial risks to humans, animals, and other living organisms. Therefore, the introduction of methods for the removal of As is important. The present study aimed to investigate the adsorption model and mechanism of As removal utilizing natural soil adsorbents. The batch adsorption technique was used to analyze the impacts of various parameters such as contact time, initial As concentration, pH, and temperature. Adsorption mechanisms were studied through adsorption kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic models. The batch adsorption study findings indicate that the optimal conditions for maximum As removal were achieved by application of 2.2 g of adsorbents in 50 μg/L of As solution for 60 min of contact time at a pH of 5.5 ± 0.5 and a temperature of 40 °C. The highest removal efficiency was achieved when red soil was employed as the adsorbent. The kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic models revealed that As adsorption was a chemisorptive, nonspontaneous, and endothermic process.

Guest-selective shape-memory effect in a switchable metal-organic framework DUT-8(Zn)

Crystal size engineering allows tailoring of flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to achieve new properties. The gating type flexibility of the DUT-8(Zn) ([Zn2(2,6-ndc)2(dabco)]n, 2,6-ndc = 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate, dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclo-[2.2.2]-octane) compound is known to be extremely particle size sensitive. Here, the physisorption of ethanol vapor gives rise to so-called shape-memory effect, leading to rigidification and flexibility suppression. According to powder X-ray diffraction and nitrogen physisorption experiments, the open pore phase is retained selectively after desorption of alcohols, which could be attributed to the nano-structuring and surface deformation of the crystals as a result of exposure to alcohols.

Chemoselectivity Inversion of Responsive Metal-Organic Frameworks by Particle Size Tuning in the Micrometer Regime

Gated adsorption is one of the unique physical properties of flexible metal-organic frameworks with high application potential in selective adsorption and sensing of molecules. Despite recent studies that have provided some guidelines in understanding and designing structural flexibility for controlling gate opening by chemical modification of the secondary building units, currently, there is no established strategy to design a flexible MOF showing selective gated adsorption for a specific guest molecule. In a present contribution it is demonstrated for the first time, that the selectivity in the gate opening of a particular compound can be tuned, changed, and even reversed using particle size engineering DUT-8(Zn) ([Zn2(2,6-ndc)2(dabco)]n, 2,6-ndc = 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate, dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclo-[2.2.2]-octane, DUT = Dresden University of Technology) experiences phase transition from open (op) to closed (cp) pore phase upon removal of solvent from the pores. Microcrystals show selective reopening in the presence of dichloromethane (DCM) over alcohols. Crystal downsizing to micron size unexpectedly reverses the gate opening selectivity, causing DUT-8(Zn) to open its nanosized pores for alcohols but suppressing the responsivity toward DCM.

Generalised analytical method unravels framework-dependent kinetics of adsorption-induced structural transition in flexible metal-organic frameworks

Flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibiting adsorption-induced structural transition can revolutionise adsorption separation processes, including CO2 separation, which has become increasingly important in recent years. However, the kinetics of this structural transition remains poorly understood despite being crucial to process design. Here, the CO2-induced gate opening of ELM-11 ([Cu(BF4)2(4,4'-bipyridine)2]n) is investigated by time-resolved in situ X-ray powder diffraction, and a theoretical kinetic model of this process is developed to gain atomistic insight into the transition dynamics. The thus-developed model consists of the differential pressure from the gate opening (indicating the ease of structural transition) and reaction model terms (indicating the transition propagation within the crystal). The reaction model of ELM-11 is an autocatalytic reaction with two pathways for CO2 penetration of the framework. Moreover, gas adsorption analyses of two other flexible MOFs with different flexibilities indicate that the kinetics of the adsorption-induced structural transition is highly dependent on framework structure.

Nickel Slag/Laterite Soil and Nickel Slag/Iron Sand Nanocomposites: Structural, Optical, and Electromagnetic Absorption Properties

Efforts to produce microwave absorber materials that are inexpensive and environmentally friendly have become a means of greening the environment. The breakthrough can be focused on industrial waste and natural materials for functional purposes and how to enhance their performance. We successfully synthesized nickel slag/laterite soil (NS/LS) and nickel slag/iron sand (NS/IS) nanocomposites using a simple mechanical alloying technique, and the electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption capacities of the nanocomposites were measured using a vector network analyzer. The structural properties of the nanocomposites were analyzed by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, where the results of the analysis showed that NS/IS has the largest crystallite size (15.69 nm) and the highest EM wave absorption performance. The optical properties of the nanocomposites were determined from their Fourier transform infrared spectra using the Kramers-Kronig relation. As determined through a quantitative analysis of the optical properties, the distance between the longitudinal and transversal optical phonon wavenumber positions (Δ(LO - TO) = 65 cm^-1) is inversely proportional to the reflection loss. The surface morphologies of the nanocomposites were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, and the particle diameters were observed by binary image and Gaussian distribution analyses. The nanocomposite surface exhibits a graded-like morphology, which indicates multiple reflections of the EM radiation, consequently reducing the EM interference. The best nanocomposite for an attenuated EM wave achieved a reflection loss of -39.14 dB at 5-8 GHz. A low penetration depth has implications for the electrical charge tuning of the storage and composite magnets. Finally, the EM absorption properties of NS/IS and NS/LS indicate a 2-mm-thick environmentally friendly nanocomposite for EM absorption.

Kinetics of Guest-Induced Structural Transitions in Metal-Organic-Framework MIL-53(Al)-NH2 Probed by High-Pressure Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

A nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study of a pore opening in amino-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) MIL-53(Al) in response to methane pressure variation is presented. Variations of both NMR signal intensities and transversal relaxation rates for methane are found to reveal hysteretic structural transitions in the MOF material, which are smeared out over broad pressure ranges. Experiments with pressure reversals upon an incomplete adsorption/desorption gave deeper insight into the microscopic transition mechanisms. These experiments have unequivocally proven that the non-stepwise pore opening/closing transitions observed in the experiments are governed by a distribution of the opening/closing pressures over different MOF crystallites, for example, due to a distribution of the crystal sizes or shapes. The slow kinetics of the structural transitions measured in the hysteresis regime revealed a complex free energy landscape for the phase transition process.

The importance of crystal size for breathing kinetics in MIL-53(Al)

Herein we analyze the switching kinetics of a breathing framework MIL-53(Al) with respect to different crystallite size regimes. Synchrotron time-resolved powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and adsorption rate analysis of n-butane physisorption at 298 K demonstrate the decisive role of crystal size affecting the time domain of breathing transitions in MIL-53(Al).
