Mechanochemical Strategies for the Preparation of SiO2-Supported AgAu Nanoalloy Catalysts

Mechanochemical hydroquinone regeneration promotes gold salt reduction in sub-stoichiometric conditions of the reducing agent

Bottom-up mechanochemical synthesis (BUMS) has been demonstrated to be an efficient approach for the preparation of metal nanoparticles (NPs), protected by surface agents or anchored on solid supports. However, there are limitations, such as precise size and morphological control, due to a lack of knowledge about the mechanically induced processes of NP formation under milling. In this article, we further investigate the BUMS of AuNPs. Using SiO2 as a solid support, we studied the effect of typical reducing agents, namely NaBH4, L-ascorbic acid, and hydroquinone (HQ), on the conversion of a AuIII source. XANES showed that HQ is the strongest reducing agent under our experimental conditions, leading to the quantitative conversion of gold salt in a few minutes. Interestingly, even when HQ was used in sub-stoichiometric amounts, AuIII could be reduced to ratios higher than 85% after two minutes of milling. Investigations into the byproducts by 1H NMR and GC-FID/MS enabled the identification HQ regeneration and the formation of its derivatives. We mainly focused on benzoquinone (BQ), which is the product of the oxidation of HQ as it reduces the gold salt. We could demonstrate that HQ is regenerated from BQ exclusively under milling and acidic conditions. The regenerated HQ and other HQ-chlorinated molecules could then reduce gold-oxidized species, leading to higher conversions and economy of reactants. Our study highlights the intriguing and complex mechanisms of mechanochemical systems, in addition to fostering the atom and energy economy side of mechanochemical means to produce metal nanoparticles.

Synergistically Enhanced Oxidase-like Property of Core-Shell MOF Nanozymes by Decorating Au and Ag/AgCl Nanoparticles for l-Cysteine Colorimetric Sensing

Monitoring l-cysteine (l-Cys) is of importance for human health and food safety. Herein, we designed a novel strategy for bimetallic Au and Ag/AgCl anchoring on Ni-doped ZIF-67 to form core-shell nanocubes (Ni-ZIF-67/AuAg/AgCl) using the galvanic replacement processes. The unique properties of ZIF-67 nanocubes were conducive to generating strong synergistic catalytic effects with Au and Ag/AgCl, particularly when Ni-ZIF-67/AuAg/AgCl composites were employed as oxidase mimics for catalyzing the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). The Ni-ZIF-67/AuAg/AgCl composites displayed strong affinity toward TMB, displaying a lower Michaelis constant Km value of 0.25 mM and a higher maximum initial rate Vmax of 9 × 10-8 M s-1. By virtue of the nanozyme, the colorimetric sensor was constructed for l-Cys detection with a relatively low detection limit of 0.051 μM. The superior catalytic performance of the as-prepared Ni-ZIF-67/AuAg/AgCl composites can be ascribed to the core-shell structure, large specific surface area, and strong synergistic catalytic effects, which are beneficial for exposing more active sites and enhancing the conductivity to further boost their catalytic activity.

Direct Dry Synthesis of Supported Bimetallic Catalysts: A Study on Comminution and Alloying of Metal Nanoparticles

Ball milling is growing increasingly important as an alternative synthetic tool to prepare catalytic materials. It was recently observed that supported metal catalysts could be directly obtained upon ball milling from the coarse powders of metal and oxide support. Moreover, when two compatible metal sources are simultaneously subjected to the mechanochemical treatment, bimetallic nanoparticles are obtained. A systematic investigation was extended to different metals and supports to understand better the mechanisms involved in the comminution and alloying of metal nanoparticles. Based on this, a model describing the role of metal-support interactions in the synthesis was developed. The findings will be helpful for the future rational design of supported metal catalysts via dry ball milling.
