Relative Populations and IR Spectra of Cu38 Cluster at Finite Temperature Based on DFT and Statistical Thermodynamics Calculations

Exploration of Free Energy Surface of the Au10 Nanocluster at Finite Temperature

The first step in comprehending the properties of Au10 clusters is understanding the lowest energy structure at low and high temperatures. Functional materials operate at finite temperatures; however, energy computations employing density functional theory (DFT) methodology are typically carried out at zero temperature, leaving many properties unexplored. This study explored the potential and free energy surface of the neutral Au10 nanocluster at a finite temperature, employing a genetic algorithm coupled with DFT and nanothermodynamics. Furthermore, we computed the thermal population and infrared Boltzmann spectrum at a finite temperature and compared it with the validated experimental data. Moreover, we performed the chemical bonding analysis using the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) approach and the adaptive natural density partitioning method (AdNDP) to shed light on the bonding of Au atoms in the low-energy structures. In the calculations, we take into consideration the relativistic effects through the zero-order regular approximation (ZORA), the dispersion through Grimme's dispersion with Becke-Johnson damping (D3BJ), and we employed nanothermodynamics to consider temperature contributions. Small Au clusters prefer the planar shape, and the transition from 2D to 3D could take place at atomic clusters consisting of ten atoms, which could be affected by temperature, relativistic effects, and dispersion. We analyzed the energetic ordering of structures calculated using DFT with ZORA and single-point energy calculation employing the DLPNO-CCSD(T) methodology. Our findings indicate that the planar lowest energy structure computed with DFT is not the lowest energy structure computed at the DLPN0-CCSD(T) level of theory. The computed thermal population indicates that the 2D elongated hexagon configuration strongly dominates at a temperature range of 50-800 K. Based on the thermal population, at a temperature of 100 K, the computed IR Boltzmann spectrum agrees with the experimental IR spectrum. The chemical bonding analysis on the lowest energy structure indicates that the cluster bond is due only to the electrons of the 6 s orbital, and the Au d orbitals do not participate in the bonding of this system.

Electron-Delocalization Across High Surface Entropy Sub-1 nm Nanobelts Toward Enhanced Electrocatalytic Urea Oxidation

Integration of inherently incompatible elements into a single sublattice, resulting in the formation of monophasic metal oxide, holds great scientific promise; it unveils that the overlooked surface entropy in subnanometer materials can thermodynamically facilitate the formation of homogeneous single-phase structures. Here a facile approach is proposed for synthesizing multimetallic oxide subnanometer nanobelts (MMO-PMA SNBs) by harnessing the potential of phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) clusters to capture inorganic nuclei and inhibiting their subsequent growth in solvothermal reactions. Experimental and theoretical analyses show that PMA in MMO-PMA SNBs not only aids subnanometer structure formation but also induces in situ modifications to catalytic sites. The electron transfer from PMA, coupled with the loss of elemental identity of transition metals, leads to electron delocalization, jointly activating the reaction sites. The unique structure makes pentametallic oxide (PMO-PMA SNBs) achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a low potential of 1.34 V and remain stable for 24 h at 10 mA cm-2 on urea oxidation reaction (UOR). The exceptional UOR catalytic activity suggests a potential for utilizing multimetallic subnanometer nanostructures in energy conversion and environmental remediation.

Coordination of Mercury(II) in Water Promoted over Hydrolysis in Solvated Clusters [Hg(H2O)1-6](aq)2+: Insights from Relativistic Effects and Free Energy Analysis

Understanding the nature of the interaction between mercury(II) ions, Hg2+, and water molecules is crucial to describe the stability and chemical behavior of structures formed during solvation, as well as the conditions that favor the Hg2+ coordination or inducing water hydrolysis. In our study, we explored exhaustively the potential energy surface of Hg2+ with up to six water molecules. We analyzed electronic and Gibbs free energies, binding, and nuclear magnetic resonance parameters. We used the zeroth-order regular approximation Hamiltonian, including scalar and spin-orbit relativistic corrections for free energy calculations and geometry optimizations to explore the interplay between electron correlation and relativistic effects. We analyzed intermolecular interactions with energy decomposition analysis, quantum theory of atoms in molecules, and natural bond orbital. Additionally, we used the four-component Dirac Hamiltonian to compute solvent effect on the magnetic shielding and J-coupling constants. Our results revealed that the water hydrolysis by Hg2+ requires a minimum of three water molecules. We found that the interaction between Hg2+ and water molecules is an orbital interaction due to relativistic effects and the most stable structures are opened-shape clusters, reducing the number of oxygen-mercury contacts and maximizing the formation of hydrogen bonds among water molecules. In these types of clusters, Hg2+ promotes the water hydrolysis over coordination with oxygen atoms. However, when we considered the change associated with the transfer of a cluster from the ideal gas to a solvated system, our solvation free energy analysis revealed that closed-shape clusters are more favorable, maximizing the number of oxygen-mercury contacts and reducing the formation of hydrogen bonds among water molecules. This finding suggests that, under room conditions, the coordination of Hg2+ is more favorable than hydrolysis. Our results have significant implications for understanding Hg2+ behavior in water, helping to develop targeted strategies for mercury remediation and management, and contributing to advancements in the broader field of environmental chemistry.

Structural and electronic properties of H2, CO, CH4, NO, and NH3 adsorbed onto Al12Si12 nanocages using density functional theory

In this study, the adsorption of gases (CH₄, CO, H₂, NH₃, and NO) onto Al₁₂Si₁₂ nanocages was theoretically investigated using density functional theory. For each type of gas molecule, two different adsorption sites above the Al and Si atoms on the cluster surface were explored. We performed geometry optimization on both the pure nanocage and nanocages after gas adsorption and calculated their adsorption energies and electronic properties. The geometric structure of the complexes changed slightly following gas adsorption. We show that these adsorption processes were physical ones and observed that NO adsorbed onto Al₁₂Si₁₂ had the strongest adsorption stability. The E _g (energy band gap) value of the Al₁₂Si₁₂ nanocage was 1.38 eV, indicating that it possesses semiconductor properties. The E _g values of the complexes formed after gas adsorption were all lower than that of the pure nanocage, with the NH₃-Si complex showing the greatest decrease in E _g. Additionally, the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital were analyzed according to Mulliken charge transfer theory. Interaction with various gases was found to remarkably decrease the E _g of the pure nanocage. The electronic properties of the nanocage were strongly affected by interaction with various gases. The E _g value of the complexes decreased due to the electron transfer between the gas molecule and the nanocage. The density of states of the gas adsorption complexes were also analyzed, and the results showed that the E _g of the complexes decreased due to changes in the 3p orbital of the Si atom. This study theoretically devised novel multifunctional nanostructures through the adsorption of various gases onto pure nanocages, and the findings indicate the promise of these structures for use in electronic devices.

Quantum mechanical modeling of interstellar molecules on cosmic dusts: H2O, NH3, and CO2

Since the first detection of CH molecule in interstellar medium (ISM), more than 270 molecules have been identified in various astronomical sources in ISM. These molecules include big complex ones, such as fullerene (C60) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are the main components of carbonaceous dust. Dust surface chemistry plays an important role in explaining the formation of interstellar molecules. However, many of the dust surface chemical parameters, such as the adsorption energies, are still of uncertainty. Here we present a study of the adsorption of water (H2O), ammonia (NH3), and carbon dioxide (CO2) on graphene-like substrate within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). We used Gaussian 16 software and adopted the corrected generalized gradient approximation (GGA) with the Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof (PBE) functions. We determined the optimal accretion position of the studied molecules on the graphene-like surface and calculated the adsorption energies. Furthermore, according to the density of states and molecular orbitals of the adsorbed states, we analyzed the charge transfer between the molecules and the graphene-like surface. These results can provide more accurate parameters for calculating the chemical reaction rates on the dust surface, thus contributing to the understanding of dust-surface reactions in ISM.
