Active Sites Regulation for High-Performance Oxygen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalysts

Different FeS Concentrations for Encapsulating ZIF-67 Nanomaterials toward the Enhanced Oxidation Evolution Reaction

Due to the slow kinetic nature of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the development of electrocatalysts with high efficiency, stability, and economy for oxygen production using metal-organic framework (MOF) materials is still a challenging research topic. In this work, we chose the different concentrations of FeS adsorption to encapsulate metal cobalt-based ZIF-67 MOF for preparing a series of electrocatalysts (ZIF1FeSx, x = 0.2, 0.5, 0.75, and 1), which were mainly explored for the electrocatalytic OER. Among them, ZIF1FeS0.5 has excellent electrocatalytic activity for OER, which can be driven by low overpotentials of 276 and 349 mV at 10 and 50 mA cm-2 current densities, and more than 92% of the initial overpotential can be maintained after 100 h of continuous OER at 10 mA cm-2 current density. This is mainly due to the electronic interactions between the cobalt-based MOF and the FeS, which shift the electronic state of the active metal center to a higher valence state for increasing the number of active sites and enhancing the efficiency of electron transfer to facilitate the OER course. This work may contribute to the design of effective catalysts for the OER during the electrolysis of alkaline solutions.

Dealloying fabrication of hierarchical porous Nickel–Iron foams for efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Designing and preparing highly active oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrodes are essential for improving the overall efficiency of water splitting. Increasing the number of active sites is the simplest way to enhance OER performance. Herein, we present a dealloy-etched Ni–Fe foam with a hierarchical nanoporous structure as integrated electrodes with excellent performance for OER. Using the dealloying method on the Ni–Fe foam framework, a nanoporous structure is produced, which is named nanoporous Ni–Fe@Ni–Fe foam (NP-NF@NFF). Because of the peculiarities of the dealloying method, the NP-NF@NFF produced contains oxygen vacancies and heterojunctions. As a result, NP-NF@NFF electrode outperforms state-of-the-art noble metal catalysts with an extremely low overpotential of 210 and 285 mV at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively. Additionally, the NP-NF@NFF electrode shows a 60-h stability period. Therefore, NP-NF@NFF provides new insights into the investigation of high-performance transition metal foam electrodes with effective active sites for efficient oxygen evolution at high current densities.

Recent advances in amorphous electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has attracted great attention as an important half-reaction in the electrochemical splitting of water for green hydrogen production. However, the inadequacy of highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts has impeded the development of this technology. Amorphous materials with long-range disordered structures have exhibited superior electrocatalytic performance compared to their crystalline counterparts due to more active sites and higher structural flexibility. This review summarizes the preparation methods of amorphous materials involving oxides, hydroxide, phosphides, sulfides, and their composites, and introduces the recent progress of amorphous OER electrocatalysts in acidic and alkaline media. Finally, the existing challenges and future perspectives for amorphous electrocatalysts for OER are discussed. Therefore, we believe that this review will guide designing amorphous OER electrocatalysts with high performance for future energy applications.
