Untreated or inadequately treated silver-containing wastewater may pose adverse effects on hu-man health and the ecological environment. Currently, significant progress has been made in the treatment of Ag(I) in wastewater using adsorption methods, with adsorbents playing a pivotal role in this process. This paper provides a systematic review of various adsorbents for the recovery and treatment of Ag(I) in wastewater, including MOFs, COFs, transition metal sulfides, metal oxides, biomass materials, and other polymeric materials. The adsorption mechanisms of these materials for Ag(I) are elaborated upon, along with the challenges currently faced. Furthermore, insights into optimizing adsorbents and developing novel adsorbents are proposed in this study.

Approaches for the Efficient Removal of Fluoride from Groundwater: A Comprehensive Review

Contamination of groundwater with fluoride represents a significant global issue, with high concentrations posing serious public health threats. While fluoride is a critical element in water, excessive levels can be detrimental to human health and potentially life-threatening. Addressing the challenge of removing fluoride from underground water sources via nanotechnological approaches is a pressing concern in environmental science. To collate relevant information, extensive literature searches were conducted across multiple databases, including Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, the American Chemical Society, Elsevier, Springer, and the Royal Society of Chemistry. VOS Viewer software version 1.6.20 was employed for a systematic review. This article delivers an exhaustive evaluation of various groundwater fluoride removal techniques, such as adsorption, membrane filtration, electrocoagulation, photocatalysis, and ion exchange. Among these, the application of nanoparticles emerges as a notable method. The article delves into nano-compounds, optimizing conditions for the fluoride removal process and benchmarking their efficacy against other techniques. Studies demonstrate that advanced nanotechnologies-owing to their rapid reaction times and potent oxidation capabilities-can remove fluoride effectively. The implementation of nanotechnologies in fluoride removal not only enhances water quality but also contributes to the safeguarding of human health.

Bimetal doped Cu-Fe-ZIF-8/g-C3N4 nanocomposites for the adsorption of tetracycline hydrochloride from water

Bimetal doped Cu-Fe-zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8)/graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) (Cu-Fe-ZIF-8/GCN) nanocomposites were prepared via one-pot and ion-exchange methods. The main influencing factors, such as adsorbent concentration, TC concentration, initial pH, and coexisting ions, were evaluated in detail. Due to the suitable pore structures and the presence of multiple interactions on the surface, the nanocomposite showed a high adsorption capacity up to 932 mg g-1 for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), outperforming ZIF-8 by 4.8 times. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm were depicted in good detail using pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models, respectively. Thermodynamic calculation revealed that the adsorption of the nanocomposite under experimental conditions was a spontaneous heat absorption process, and was primarily driven by chemisorption. After four cycles of use, the nanocomposite retained 87.2% of its initial adsorption capacity, confirming its high reusability and broad application prospects in removing tetracycline-type pollutants from wastewater.

Fixed-bed column adsorption modeling using Zr biocomposites for fluoride removal

This research involved conducting continuous adsorption experiments to assess fluoride elimination from drinking water achieved by utilizing biocomposites created from the peels of oranges and apples, which were impregnated with zirconium (Zr), to form BOP-Zr and BAP-Zr, respectively. The findings from the experimental data indicate that BOP-Zr and BAP-Zr are effective biosorbents with a solid ability to remove fluoride selectively. Additionally, these biosorbents were found to be stable, as they do not release Zr into the treated water. Notably, these environmentally friendly biosorbents are derived from renewable sources and enhance the value of waste materials. The study employed various empirical models, including Bohart-Adamas, Thomas, Yoon-Nelson, BDST, Clark, Yan, and Woolborska, to elucidate the mechanisms and crucial parameters involved in fluoride adsorption within packed bed columns. The Yan model demonstrated the highest correlation among these models, indicating a chemical adsorption process with kinetics following a pseudo-second-order pattern. BOP-Zr and BAP-Zr exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 59.3 and 47.5 mg/g, respectively, under a flow rate of 4 mL/min and an inlet fluoride concentration of 25 mg/L. The analysis of mass transfer coefficients revealed that the primary step governing the adsorption procedure was diffusion through pores. Consequently, the study conclusively establishes that BOP-Zr and BAP-Zr biocomposites, originating from lignocellulosic biomass remains, present a practical and competitive choice for eliminating fluoride from water. These materials surpass waste materials in performance and rival more expensive options in efficiency and performance.

Porphyrin-based conjugated microporous adsorbent material for the efficient remediation of hexavalent chromium from the aquatic environment

The encapsulation and eradication of anions from water have received a lot of scrutinize and are extremely important for virtuous production and environmental treatment. To prepare extremely efficient adsorbents, a highly functionalized and conjugated microporous porphyrin-based adsorbent material (Co-4MPP) was synthesized using the Alder Longo method. Co-4MPP featured a hierarchical microporous and mesoporous layered structure containing nitrogen and oxygen-based functional groups with a specific surface area of 685.209 m2/g and a pore volume of 0.495 cm3/g. Co-4MPP demonstrated a greater Cr (VI) adsorption empathy than the pristine porphyrin-based material did. The effects of various parameters such as pH, dose, time, and temperature were explored on the Cr (VI) adsorption by Co-4MPP. The pseudo-second-order model and the Cr (VI) adsorption kinetics were in agreement (R2 = 0.999). The Langmuir isotherm model matched the Cr (VI) adsorption isotherm, demonstrating the optimum Cr (VI) adsorption capacities: 291.09, 307.42, and 339.17 mg/g at 298K, 312K, and 320K, correspondingly, with remediation effectiveness of 96.88%. The model evaluation further revealed that Cr (VI) adsorption mechanism on Co-4MPP was endothermic, spontaneous, and entropy-rising. The detailed discussion of the adsorption mechanism suggested that it could be a reduction, chelation, and electrostatic interaction, in which the protonated nitrogen and oxygen-containing functional groups on the porphyrin ring interacted with Cr (VI) anions to form a stable complex, thus remediating Cr (VI) anions efficiently. Moreover, Co-4MPP demonstrated strong reusability, maintaining 70% of its Cr (VI) elimination rate after four consecutive adsorptions.

Adsorption of direct blue 106 dye using zinc oxide nanoparticles prepared via green synthesis technique

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) have in recent times shown effective adsorption capability for the confiscation of colour contaminants from aqueous environments (aquatic ecosystems or water bodies) due to the fact that ZnO contains more functional groups. Direct blue 106 (DB106) dye was selected for this present study as a model composite due to its wide range of uses in textiles (cotton and wools), woods, and paper industries, as well as their therapeutic applications, along with its potential for impairments. The current study uses green synthesis method to prepare ZnO-NPs as an adsorbent for the DB106 dye molecules adsorption under various conditions using the batch adsorption process. The adsorption of DB106 dye to the ZnO-NPs biosorbent was detected to be pH-dependent, with optimal adsorption of DB106 (anionic) dye particles observed at pH 7. DB106 dye adsorption to the synthesized ZnO-NPs adsorbent was distinct by means of the linearized Langmuir (LNR) and pseudo-second-order (SO) models, with an estimated maximum adsorption capacity (Q_m) of 370.37 mg/g.
