Recent Advances in the Catalytic Conversion of Biomass to Furfural in Deep Eutectic Solvents

Adsorptive Membranes Incorporating Ionic Liquids (ILs), Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs) or Graphene Oxide (GO) for Metal Salts Extraction from Aqueous Feed

Water scarcity is a significant concern, particularly in arid regions, due to the rapid growth in population, industrialization, and climate change. Seawater desalination has emerged as a conventional and reliable solution for obtaining potable water. However, conventional membrane-based seawater desalination has drawbacks, such as high energy consumption resulting from a high-pressure requirement, as well as operational challenges like membrane fouling and high costs. To overcome these limitations, it is crucial to enhance the performance of membranes by increasing their efficiency, selectivity, and reducing energy consumption and footprint. Adsorptive membranes, which integrate adsorption and membrane technologies, offer a promising approach to address the drawbacks of standalone membranes. By incorporating specific materials into the membrane matrix, composite membranes have demonstrated improved permeability, selectivity, and reduced pressure requirements, all while maintaining effective pollutant rejection. Researchers have explored different adsorbents, including emerging materials such as ionic liquids (ILs), deep eutectic solvents (DESs), and graphene oxide (GO), for embedding into membranes and utilizing them in various applications. This paper aims to discuss the existing challenges in the desalination process and focus on how these materials can help overcome these challenges. It will also provide a comprehensive review of studies that have reported the successful incorporation of ILs, DESs, and GO into membranes to fabricate adsorptive membranes for desalination. Additionally, the paper will highlight both the current and anticipated challenges in this field, as well as present prospects, and provide recommendations for further advancements.

Synthesis of biofuel precursors from benzaldehyde and cyclopentanone via aldehyde-ketone condensation in a deep eutectic solvent system

Production of biofuel precursors from biomass-derived platform compounds (BDPC) has a profound influence on biofuel industries. Herein, an efficient catalytic system composed of the deep eutectic solvent (DES, i.e., ChCl/Fa) and SnCl4 (ChCl/Fa-SnCl4) was developed to produce biofuel precursors (C12 and C19) through aldehyde-ketone (A-K) condensation of benzaldehyde (BD) and cyclopentanone (CPO). ChCl/Fa-SnCl4 exhibited the prospective catalytic performance and given the high selectivity (SC12 = 49.20%, SC19 = 15.20%) and total yield (YC12+C19 = 64.37%) of C12 and C19, as well as 99.96% BD conversion under the optimized conditions (BD : CPO molar ratio of 1 : 6, ChCl : Fa molar ratio of 1 : 12, 4 mmol SnCl4, 80 °C for 120 min). Subsequently, the C12 and C19 precursors were successfully applied to generate cyclic alkanes (C12H14 and C19H18) by hydrodeoxygenation with selectivity of 37.61% and 24.10%, respectively. Finally, the potential catalytic mechanism was explored by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results unveiled that the formation of a stable structure for the ChCl/Fa-SnCl4 system was ascribed to the viable interactions among ChCl, Fa and SnCl4 by coordination bonds, electrostatic interactions and H-bonds, which decreased reaction energy barriers and drove the condensation of BD and CPO. In this case, the catalytic reactions between BD and CPO were enhanced to promote the synthesis of C12 and C19. This work provides a novel strategy for the applicability of different BDPC to synthesize fuel precursors for the development of liquid biofuels.

Tetrabutylammonium-chloride-glycerol of deep eutectic solvent functionalized MnO2: a novel mimic enzyme for the quantitative and qualitative colorimetric detection of L-cysteine

L-Cysteine is a common amino acid that plays an important role in human livelihood and production. Therefore, a novel method for the simultaneous quantitative and qualitative determination of L-cysteine by a colorimetric detection system is proposed. As a viable oxidase mimic, [N₄₄₄₄]Cl-G/MnO₂, which consisted of MnO₂ nanosheets functionalized by a tetrabutylammonium chloride-glycerol ([N₄₄₄₄]Cl-G) based deep eutectic solvent (DES) was fabricated. Owing to the oxidation of MnO₂ nanosheets, [N₄₄₄₄]Cl-G/MnO₂ could oxidize the colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into a blue product (oxTMB) with the characteristic UV-vis spectrum absorbance at 652 nm. The oxidation of TMB by DES/MnO₂ was inhibited when L-cysteine was introduced, and the absorbance decreased proportionally with the increase in L-cysteine concentration. Due to this inhibition effect, a colorimetric detection system ([N₄₄₄₄]Cl-G/MnO₂-TMB) was developed for the quantitative determination of L-cysteine. Under optimal conditions, the assay showed good linearity over the concentration range of 0.125-2.00 μg mL^-1 with a low detection limit of 5.96 ng mL^-1. A study of the inhibition mechanism demonstrated that the sulfhydryl group of L-cysteine could decompose [N₄₄₄₄]Cl-G/MnO₂ into Mn²⁺, thus limiting the conversion of TMB to oxTMB. In addition, the [N₄₄₄₄]Cl-G/MnO₂-TMB system was used in test strips for the visual qualitative detection of L-cysteine. The selectivity and test strip results demonstrated the high selectivity, simple operation, and rapid response of the [N₄₄₄₄]Cl-G/MnO₂-TMB system for the qualitative detection of L-cysteine. Given the satisfying performance of the detection strategy, colorimetric sensing based on the [N₄₄₄₄]Cl-G/MnO₂-TMB system is considered to have prospective application value in the quantitative and qualitative detection of L-cysteine.

Spillover Hydrogen on Electron-Rich Ni/m-TiO2 for Hydrogenation of Furfural to Tetrahydrofurfuryl Alcohol

Conversion of biomass-derived furfural (FFA) platform molecule to value-added tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA) molecule is a sustainable route using an efficient non-noble metallic catalyst in water solvent. In this work, Ni in various loadings on mesoporous titanium dioxide (m-TiO2) was synthesized in one pot by Evaporation-Induced Self-Assembly (EISA). The synthesised catalysts were evaluated for the hydrogenation of furfural to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol. The catalysts were characterised using a combination of spectroscopic techniques such as XRD, H2-TPR, H2-TPD, XPS, SEM-EDX, TEM, and HR-TEM. The characterization results show that the Ni/m-TiO2 materials exhibit enhanced electron-rich active sites, facilitated hydrogen spillover, uniform dispersion of small Ni particles (~5 nm), and strong metal support interaction between Ni and TiO2. Among the various Ni dopings, 7.5 wt.% Ni/m-TiO2 catalyst exhibited the best performance and achieved 99.9% FFA conversion and 93.2% THFA selectivity in water solvent at 100 °C and under 2 MPa H2. Additionally, detailed kinetic studies, process parameters, the stability and reusability of the catalyst were also studied. The results demonstrated that the 7.5 wt.% Ni/m-TiO2 catalyst is highly active and stable.
