Atmospheric Correction of Satellite Ocean-Color Imagery During the PACE Era

Enhanced POLYMER atmospheric correction algorithm for water-leaving radiance retrievals from hyperspectral/multispectral remote sensing data in inland and coastal waters

Accurate retrieval of the water-leaving radiance from hyperspectral/multispectral remote sensing data in optically complex inland and coastal waters remains a challenge due to the excessive concentrations of phytoplankton and suspended sediments as well as the inaccurate estimation and extrapolation of aerosol radiance over the visible wavelengths. In recent years, reasonably accurate methods were established to estimate the enhanced contribution of suspended sediments in the near-infrared (NIR) and shortwave infrared (SWIR) bands to enable atmospheric correction in coastal waters, but solutions to derive the dominant phytoplankton contribution in the NIR and SWIR bands are less generalizable and subject to large uncertainties in the remotely-derived water color products. These issues are not only associated with the standard atmospheric correction algorithm in the SeaDAS processing system but with the non-traditional algorithms such as POLYMER (POLYnomial-based approach established for the atmospheric correction of MERIS data). This study attempts to enhance the POLYMER algorithm to enable atmospheric correction of hyperspectral and multispectral remote sensing data over a wide range of inland and ocean waters. The original POLYMER algorithm is less suitable owing to its complete reliance on a polynomial approach to model the atmospheric reflectance as a function of the wavelength and retrieve the water-leaving reflectance using two semi-analytical models (MM01 and PR05). The polynomial functions calculate the bulk atmospheric contribution instead of using an explicit method to estimate aerosol radiance separately, resulting the erroneous water color products in inland and coastal waters. The modified POLYMER algorithm (mPOLYMER) employs more realistic approaches to estimate aerosol contributions with a combination of UV and Visible-NIR bands and enables accurate retrievals of water-leaving radiance from both hyperspectral and multispectral remote sensing data. To assess the relative performance and wider applicability of mPOLYMER, the original and enhanced algorithms were tested on a variety of HICO, MSI and MODIS-Aqua data and the retrieved Lwn products were compared with AERONET-OC and OOIL-regional in-situ data. Expectedly, the mPOLYMER algorithm greatly improved the accuracy of Lwn (in terms of magnitude and spectral shape) when applied to MODIS-Aqua and HICO data in highly turbid productive waters (with higher concentrations of phytoplankton or with dense algal blooms) in Muttukadu Lagoon, Lake Erie, Yangtze River Estuary, Baltic Sea and Arabian Sea. In contrast, the original POLYMER algorithm overestimated Lwn in the visible and NIR bands and produced unphysical negative Lwn or distorted Lwn spectra in turbid productive waters. The mPOLYMER yielded a relative mean error reduction of more than 50% (i.e., from 79% to 34%) in Lwn for a large number of matchup data. The improved accuracy and data quality is because the mPOLYMER algorithm's funio and coefficients sufficiently accounted for the enhanced backscattering contribution of phytoplankton and suspended sediments in optically complex waters.

Extending aquatic spectral information with the first radiometric IR-B field observations

Planetary radiometric observations enable remote sensing of biogeochemical parameters to describe spatiotemporal variability in aquatic ecosystems. For approximately the last half century, the science of aquatic radiometry has established a knowledge base using primarily, but not exclusively, visible wavelengths. Scientific subdisciplines supporting aquatic radiometry have evolved hardware, software, and procedures to maximize competency for exploiting visible wavelength information. This perspective culminates with the science requirement that visible spectral resolution must be continually increased to extract more information. Other sources of information, meanwhile, remain underexploited, particularly information from nonvisible wavelengths. Herein, absolute radiometry is used to evaluate spectral limits for deriving and exploiting aquatic data products, specifically the normalized water-leaving radiance, Γ ( λ ) , and its derivative products. Radiometric observations presented herein are quality assured for individual wavebands, and spectral verification is conducted by analyzing celestial radiometric results, comparing agreement of above- and in-water observations at applicable wavelengths, and evaluating consistency with bio-optical models and optical theory. The results presented include the first absolute radiometric field observations of Γ ( λ ) within the IR-B spectral domain (i.e. spanning 1400-3000 nm), which indicate that IR-B signals confer greater and more variable flux than formerly ascribed. Black-pixel processing, a routine correction in satellite and in situ aquatic radiometry wherein a spectrum is offset corrected relative to a nonvisible waveband (often IR-B or a shorter legacy waveband) set to a null value, is shown to degrade aquatic spectra and derived biogeochemical parameters.

Optimizing retrieval spaces of bio-optical models for remote sensing of ocean color

We investigated the optimal number of independent parameters required to accurately represent spectral remote sensing reflectances (R _rs) by performing principal component analysis on quality controlled in situ and synthetic R _rs data. We found that retrieval algorithms should be able to retrieve no more than four free parameters from R _rs spectra for most ocean waters. In addition, we evaluated the performance of five different bio-optical models with different numbers of free parameters for the direct inversion of in-water inherent optical properties (IOPs) from in situ and synthetic R _rs data. The multi-parameter models showed similar performances regardless of the number of parameters. Considering the computational cost associated with larger parameter spaces, we recommend bio-optical models with three free parameters for the use of IOP or joint retrieval algorithms.

Optimal estimation framework for ocean color atmospheric correction and pixel-level uncertainty quantification

Ocean color (OC) remote sensing requires compensation for atmospheric scattering and absorption (aerosol, Rayleigh, and trace gases), referred to as atmospheric correction (AC). AC allows inference of parameters such as spectrally resolved remote sensing reflectance (R_rs(λ);sr^-1) at the ocean surface from the top-of-atmosphere reflectance. Often the uncertainty of this process is not fully explored. Bayesian inference techniques provide a simultaneous AC and uncertainty assessment via a full posterior distribution of the relevant variables, given the prior distribution of those variables and the radiative transfer (RT) likelihood function. Given uncertainties in the algorithm inputs, the Bayesian framework enables better constraints on the AC process by using the complete spectral information compared to traditional approaches that use only a subset of bands for AC. This paper investigates a Bayesian inference research method (optimal estimation [OE]) for OC AC by simultaneously retrieving atmospheric and ocean properties using all visible and near-infrared spectral bands. The OE algorithm analytically approximates the posterior distribution of parameters based on normality assumptions and provides a potentially viable operational algorithm with a reduced computational expense. We developed a neural network RT forward model look-up table-based emulator to increase algorithm efficiency further and thus speed up the likelihood computations. We then applied the OE algorithm to synthetic data and observations from the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua spacecraft. We compared the R_rs(λ) retrieval and its uncertainty estimates from the OE method with in-situ validation data from the SeaWiFS bio-optical archive and storage system (SeaBASS) and aerosol robotic network for ocean color (AERONET-OC) datasets. The OE algorithm improved R_rs(λ) estimates relative to the NASA standard operational algorithm by improving all statistical metrics at 443, 555, and 667 nm. Unphysical negative R_rs(λ), which often appears in complex water conditions, was reduced by a factor of 3. The OE-derived pixel-level R_rs(λ) uncertainty estimates were also assessed relative to in-situ data and were shown to have skill.

Top-of-atmosphere hyper and multispectral signatures of submerged plastic litter with changing water clarity and depth

The exploitation of satellite remote sensing is expected to be a critical asset in monitoring floating and submerged plastic litter in all aquatic environments. However, robust retrieval algorithms still havel to be developed based on a full understanding of light interaction with plastic litter and the other optically active constituents of the atmosphere-water system. To this end, we performed laboratory-based hyperspectral reflectance measurements of submerged macroplastics under varying water clarity conditions (clear - 0 mg/L, moderate - 75 mg/L, very turbid - 321.3 mg/L) and submersion depths. This comprehensive optical dataset was used (i) to relate the plastic-related signal to submersion depth and turbidity parameters, and (ii) to investigate the top-of-atmosphere signal through full radiative transfer calculations. Simulated TOA radiation was used to explore the nominal pixel and spectral requirements based on WorldView-3, Sentinel-2, and Sentinel-3 missions with very high to moderate geo-spatial resolutions. Results showed that plastics remained detectable when submerged in the top ∼1 m of the water column regardless of water clarity conditions. At TOA, uncertainties attached to atmospheric correction were shown to be reasonable and acceptable for plastic detection purposes in the infrared part of the spectrum (> 700 nm). The impact of aerosols on the TOA signal was found to be complex as (i) over large plastic patches. The aerosols produced little impact on satellite observations mostly due to adjacency effects and (ii) optical signature from isolated/small extent plastic patches was critically altered suggesting the atmospheric transmittance should be accurately corrected for in plastic detection algorithms. The sensitivity analyses also revealed that the narrow band widths of Sentinel-3 did not improve detection performance compared to the WorldView-3 coarser band widths. It is proposed that high spatial resolution wavebands such as the pan-chromatic could be advantageously explored for submerged plastic monitoring applications.

Evaluating Atmospheric Correction Algorithms Applied to OLCI Sentinel-3 Data of Chesapeake Bay Waters

Satellite remote sensing permits large-scale monitoring of coastal waters through synoptic measurements of water-leaving radiance that can be scaled to relevant water quality metrics and in turn help inform local and regional responses to a variety of stressors. As both the incident and water-leaving radiance are affected by interactions with the intervening atmosphere, the efficacy of atmospheric correction algorithms is essential to derive accurate water-leaving radiometry. Modern ocean color satellite sensors such as the Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) onboard the Copernicus Sentinel-3A and -3B satellites are providing unprecedented operational data at the higher spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution that is necessary to resolve optically complex coastal water quality. Validating these satellite-based radiance measurements with vicarious in situ radiometry, especially in optically complex coastal waters, is a critical step in not only evaluating atmospheric correction algorithm performance but ultimately providing accurate water quality metrics for stakeholders. In this study, a regional in situ dataset from the Chesapeake Bay was used to evaluate the performance of four atmospheric correction algorithms applied to OLCI Level-1 data. Images of the Chesapeake Bay are processed through a neural-net based algorithm (C2RCC), a spectral optimization-based algorithm (POLYMER), an iterative two-band bio-optical-based algorithm (L2gen), and compared to the standard Level-2 OLCI data (BAC). Performance was evaluated through a matchup analysis to in situ remote sensing reflectance data. Statistical metrics demonstrated that C2RCC had the best performance, particularly in the longer wavelengths (>560 nm) and POLYMER contained the most clear day coverage (fewest flagged data). This study provides a framework with associated uncertainties and recommendations to utilize OLCI ocean color data to monitor the water quality and biogeochemical dynamics in Chesapeake Bay.

Satellites for long-term monitoring of inland U.S. lakes: The MERIS time series and application for chlorophyll-a

Lakes and other surface fresh waterbodies provide drinking water, recreational and economic opportunities, food, and other critical support for humans, aquatic life, and ecosystem health. Lakes are also productive ecosystems that provide habitats and influence global cycles. Chlorophyll concentration provides a common metric of water quality, and is frequently used as a proxy for lake trophic state. Here, we document the generation and distribution of the complete MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS; Appendix A provides a complete list of abbreviations) radiometric time series for over 2300 satellite resolvable inland bodies of water across the contiguous United States (CONUS) and more than 5,000 in Alaska. This contribution greatly increases the ease of use of satellite remote sensing data for inland water quality monitoring, as well as highlights new horizons in inland water remote sensing algorithm development. We evaluate the performance of satellite remote sensing Cyanobacteria Index (CI)-based chlorophyll algorithms, the retrievals for which provide surrogate estimates of phytoplankton concentrations in cyanobacteria dominated lakes. Our analysis quantifies the algorithms' abilities to assess lake trophic state across the CONUS. As a case study, we apply a bootstrapping approach to derive a new CI-to-chlorophyll relationship, Chl_BS, which performs relatively well with a multiplicative bias of 1.11 (11%) and mean absolute error of 1.60 (60%). While the primary contribution of this work is the distribution of the MERIS radiometric timeseries, we provide this case study as a roadmap for future stakeholders' algorithm development activities, as well as a tool to assess the strengths and weaknesses of applying a single algorithm across CONUS.

Seasonal bias in global ocean color observations

In this study, we identify a seasonal bias in the ocean color satellite-derived remote sensing reflectances (Rrs(λ);sr-1) at the ocean color validation site, Marine Optical BuoY. The seasonal bias in Rrs(λ) is present to varying degrees in all ocean color satellites examined, including the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite, Sea-Viewing Wide Field-of-View Sensor, and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer. The relative bias in Rrs has spectral dependence. Products derived from Rrs(λ) are affected by the bias to varying degrees, with particulate backscattering varying up to 50% over a year, chlorophyll varying up to 25% over a year, and absorption from phytoplankton or dissolved material varying by up to 15%. The propagation of Rrs(λ) bias into derived products is broadly confirmed on regional and global scales using Argo floats and data from the cloud-aerosol lidar with orthogonal polarization instrument aboard the cloud-aerosol lidar and infrared pathfinder satellite. The artifactual seasonality in ocean color is prominent in areas of low biomass (i.e., subtropical gyres) and is not easily discerned in areas of high biomass. While we have eliminated several candidates that could cause the biases in Rrs(λ), there are still outstanding questions regarding potential contributions from atmospheric corrections. Specifically, we provide evidence that the aquatic bidirectional reflectance distribution function may in part cause the observed seasonal bias, but this does not preclude an additional effect of the aerosol estimation. Our investigation highlights the contributions that atmospheric correction schemes can make in introducing biases in Rrs(λ), and we recommend more simulations to discern these influence Rrs(λ) biases. Community efforts are needed to find the root cause of the seasonal bias because all past, present, and future data are, or will be, affected until a solution is implemented.

Assessment of Polymer Atmospheric Correction Algorithm for Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Imagery over Coastal Waters

Spaceborne imaging spectroscopy, also called hyperspectral remote sensing, has shown huge potential to improve current water colour retrievals and, thereby, the monitoring of inland and coastal water ecosystems. However, the quality of water colour retrievals strongly depends on successful removal of the atmospheric/surface contributions to the radiance measured by satellite sensors. Atmospheric correction (AC) algorithms are specially designed to handle these effects, but are challenged by the hundreds of narrow spectral bands obtained by hyperspectral sensors. In this paper, we investigate the performance of Polymer AC for hyperspectral remote sensing over coastal waters. Polymer is, in nature, a hyperspectral algorithm that has been mostly applied to multispectral satellite data to date. Polymer was applied to data from the Hyperspectral Imager for the Coastal Ocean (HICO), validated against in situ multispectral (AERONET-OC) and hyperspectral radiometric measurements, and its performance was compared against that of the hyperspectral version of NASA’s standard AC algorithm, L2gen. The match-up analysis demonstrated very good performance of Polymer in the green spectral region. The mean absolute percentage difference across all the visible bands varied between 16% (green spectral region) and 66% (red spectral region). Compared with L2gen, Polymer remote sensing reflectances presented lower uncertainties, greater data coverage, and higher spectral similarity to in situ measurements. These results demonstrate the potential of Polymer to perform AC on hyperspectral satellite data over coastal waters, thus supporting its application in current and future hyperspectral satellite missions.

Development and Validation of an Empirical Ocean Color Algorithm with Uncertainties: A Case Study with the Particulate Backscattering Coefficient

We explored how algorithm (model) and in situ measurement (observation) uncertainties can effectively be incorporated into empirical ocean color model development and assessment. In this study we focused on methods for deriving the particulate backscattering coefficient at 555 nm, b bp (555) (m-1). We developed a simple empirical algorithm for deriving b bp (555) as a function of a remote sensing reflectance line height (LH) metric. Model training was performed using a high-quality bio-optical dataset that contains coincident in situ measurements of the spectral remote sensing reflectances, R rs (λ) (sr-1), and the spectral particulate backscattering coefficients, b bp (λ). The LH metric used is defined as the magnitude of R rs (555) relative to a linear baseline drawn between R rs (490) and R rs (670). Using an independent validation dataset, we compared the skill of the LH-based model with two other models. We used contemporary validation metrics, including bias and mean absolute error (MAE), that were corrected for model and observation uncertainties. The results demonstrated that measurement uncertainties do indeed impact contemporary validation metrics such as mean bias and MAE. Zeta-scores and z-tests for overlapping confidence intervals were also explored as potential methods for assessing model skill.

A Technical Study on UAV Characteristics for Precision Agriculture Applications and Associated Practical Challenges

The incorporation of advanced technologies into Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) platforms have enabled many practical applications in Precision Agriculture (PA) over the past decade. These PA tools offer capabilities that increase agricultural productivity and inputs’ efficiency and minimize operational costs simultaneously. However, these platforms also have some constraints that limit the application of UAVs in agricultural operations. The constraints include limitations in providing imagery of adequate spatial and temporal resolutions, dependency on weather conditions, and geometric and radiometric correction requirements. In this paper, a practical guide on technical characterizations of common types of UAVs used in PA is presented. This paper helps select the most suitable UAVs and on-board sensors for different agricultural operations by considering all the possible constraints. Over a hundred research studies were reviewed on UAVs applications in PA and practical challenges in monitoring and mapping field crops. We concluded by providing suggestions and future directions to overcome challenges in optimizing operational proficiency.

Atmospheric correction over the ocean for hyperspectral radiometers using multi-angle polarimetric retrievals

We developed a fast and accurate polynomial based atmospheric correction (POLYAC) algorithm for hyperspectral radiometric measurements, which parameterizes the atmospheric path radiances using aerosol properties retrieved from co-located multi-wavelength multi-angle polarimeter (MAP) measurements. This algorithm has been applied to co-located spectrometer for planetary exploration (SPEX) airborne and research scanning polarimeter (RSP) measurements, where SPEX airborne was used as a proxy of hyperspectral radiometers, and RSP as the MAP. The hyperspectral remote sensing reflectance obtained from POLYAC is accurate when compared to Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET), and Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) ocean color products. POLYAC provides a robust alternative atmospheric correction algorithm for hyperspectral or multi-spectral radiometric measurements for scenes involving coastal oceans and/or absorbing aerosols, where traditional atmospheric correction algorithms are less reliable.

A Remote Sensing Method to Monitor Water, Aquatic Vegetation, and Invasive Water Hyacinth at National Extents

Diverse freshwater biological communities are threatened by invasive aquatic alien plant (IAAP) invasions and consequently, cost countries millions to manage. The effective management of these IAAP invasions necessitates their frequent and reliable monitoring across a broad extent and over a long-term. Here, we introduce and apply a monitoring approach that meet these criteria and is based on a three-stage hierarchical classification to firstly detect water, then aquatic vegetation and finally water hyacinth (Pontederia crassipes, previously Eichhornia crassipes), the most damaging IAAP species within many regions of the world. Our approach circumvents many challenges that restricted previous satellite-based water hyacinth monitoring attempts to smaller study areas. The method is executable on Google Earth Engine (GEE) extemporaneously and utilizes free, medium resolution (10–30 m) multispectral Earth Observation (EO) data from either Landsat-8 or Sentinel-2. The automated workflow employs a novel simple thresholding approach to obtain reliable boundaries for open-water, which are then used to limit the area for aquatic vegetation detection. Subsequently, a random forest modelling approach is used to discriminate water hyacinth from other detected aquatic vegetation using the eight most important variables. This study represents the first national scale EO-derived water hyacinth distribution map. Based on our model, it is estimated that this pervasive IAAP covered 417.74 km2 across South Africa in 2013. Additionally, we show encouraging results for utilizing the automatically derived aquatic vegetation masks to fit and evaluate a convolutional neural network-based semantic segmentation model, removing the need for detection of surface water extents that may not always be available at the required spatio-temporal resolution or accuracy. The water hyacinth species discrimination has a 0.80, or greater, overall accuracy (0.93), F1-score (0.87) and Matthews correlation coefficient (0.80) based on 98 widely distributed field sites across South Africa. The results suggest that the introduced workflow is suitable for monitoring changes in the extent of open water, aquatic vegetation, and water hyacinth for individual waterbodies or across national extents. CyanoTRACKER: A cloud-based integrated multi-platform architecture for global observation of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms

Over the past decade, the global proliferation of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) have presented a major risk to the public and wildlife, and ecosystem and economic services provided by inland water resources. As a consequence, water resources, environmental, and healthcare agencies are in need of early information about the development of these blooms to mitigate or minimize their impact. Results from various components of a novel multi-cloud cyber-infrastructure referred to as "CyanoTRACKER" for initial detection and continuous monitoring of spatio-temporal growth of CyanoHABs is highlighted in this study. The novelty of the CyanoTRACKER framework is the collection and integration of combined community reports (social cloud), remote sensing data (sensor cloud) and digital image analytics (computation cloud) to detect and differentiate between regular algal blooms and CyanoHABs. Individual components of CyanoTRACKER include a reporting website, mobile application (App), remotely deployable solar powered automated hyperspectral sensor (CyanoSense), and a cloud-based satellite data processing and integration tool. All components of CyanoTRACKER provided important data related to CyanoHABs assessments for regional and global water bodies. Reports and data received via social cloud including the mobile App, Twitter, Facebook, and CyanoTRACKER website, helped in identifying the geographic locations of CyanoHABs affected water bodies. A significant increase (124.92%) in tweet numbers related to CyanoHABs was observed between 2011 (total relevant tweets = 2925) and 2015 (total relevant tweets = 6579) that reflected an increasing trend of the harmful phenomena across the globe as well as an increased awareness about CyanoHABs among Twitter users. The CyanoHABs affected water bodies extracted via the social cloud were categorized, and smaller water bodies were selected for the deployment of CyanoSense, and satellite data analysis was performed for larger water bodies. CyanoSense was able to differentiate between ordinary algae and CyanoHABs through the use of their characteristic absorption feature at 620 nm. The results and products from this infrastructure can be rapidly disseminated via the CyanoTRACKER website, social media, and direct communication with appropriate management agencies for issuing warnings and alerting lake managers, stakeholders and ordinary citizens to the dangers posed by these environmentally harmful phenomena.

Evaluation of Atmospheric Correction Algorithms for Sentinel-2-MSI and Sentinel-3-OLCI in Highly Turbid Estuarine Waters

The present study assesses the performance of state-of-the-art atmospheric correction (AC) algorithms applied to Sentinel-2-MultiSpectral Instrument (S2-MSI) and Sentinel-3-Ocean and Land Color Instrument (S3-OLCI) data recorded over moderately to highly turbid estuarine waters, considering the Gironde Estuary (SW France) as a test site. Three spectral bands of water-leaving reflectance ( R h o w ) are considered: green (560 nm), red (655 or 665 nm) and near infrared (NIR) (865 nm), required to retrieve the suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentrations in clear to highly turbid waters (SPM ranging from 1 to 2000 mg/L). A previous study satisfactorily validated Acolite short wave infrared (SWIR) AC algorithm for Landsat-8-Operational Land Imager (L8-OLI) in turbid estuarine waters. The latest version of Acolite Dark Spectrum Fitting (DSF) is tested here and shows very good agreement with Acolite SWIR for OLI data. L8-OLI satellite data corrected for atmospheric effects using Acolite DSF are then used as a reference to assess the validity of atmospheric corrections applied to other satellite data recorded over the same test site with a minimum time difference. Acolite DSF and iCOR (image correction for atmospheric effects) are identified as the best performing AC algorithms among the tested AC algorithms (Acolite DSF, iCOR, Polymer and C2RCC (case 2 regional coast color)) for S2-MSI. Then, the validity of six different AC algorithms (OLCI Baseline Atmospheric Correction (BAC), iCOR, Polymer, Baseline residual (BLR), C2RCC-V1 and C2RCC-V2) applied to OLCI satellite data is assessed based on comparisons with OLI and/or MSI Acolite DSF products recorded on a same day with a minimum time lag. Results show that all the AC algorithms tend to underestimate R h o w in green, red and NIR bands except iCOR in green and red bands. The iCOR provides minimum differences in green (slope = 1.0 ± 0.15, BIAS = 1.9 ± 4.5% and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) = 12 ± 5%) and red (slope = 1.0 ± 0.17, BIAS = −9.8 ± 9% and MAPE = 28 ± 20%) bands with Acolite DSF products from OLI and MSI data. For the NIR band, BAC provides minimum differences (slope = 0.7 ± 0.13, BIAS = −33 ± 17% and MAPE = 55 ± 20%) with Acolite DSF products from OLI and MSI data. These results based on comparisons between almost simultaneous satellite products are supported by match-ups between satellite-derived and field-measured SPM concentrations provided by automated turbidity stations. Further validation of satellite products based on rigorous match-ups with in-situ R h o w measurements is still required in highly turbid waters.

On the Adequacy of Representing Water Reflectance by Semi-Analytical Models in Ocean Color Remote Sensing

Deterministic or statistical inversion schemes to retrieve ocean color from space often use a simplified water reflectance model that may introduce unrealistic constraints on the solution, a disadvantage compared with standard, two-step algorithms that make minimal assumptions about the water signal. In view of this, the semi-analytical models of Morel and Maritorena (2001), MM01, and Park and Ruddick (2005), PR05, used in the spectral matching POLYMER algorithm (Steinmetz et al., 2011), are examined in terms of their ability to restitute properly, i.e., with sufficient accuracy, water reflectance. The approach is to infer water reflectance at MODIS wavelengths, as in POLYMER, from theoretical simulations (using Hydrolight with fluorescence and Raman scattering) and, separately, from measurements (AERONET-OC network). A wide range of Case 1 and Case 2 waters, except extremely turbid waters, are included in the simulations and sampled in the measurements. The reflectance model parameters that give the best fit with the simulated data or the measurements are determined. The accuracy of the reconstructed water reflectance and its effect on the retrieval of inherent optical properties (IOPs) is quantified. The impact of cloud and aerosol transmittance, fixed to unity in the POLYMER scheme, on model performance is also evaluated. Agreement is generally good between model results and Hydrolight simulations or AERONET-OC values, even in optically complex waters, with discrepancies much smaller than typical atmospheric correction errors. Significant differences exist in some cases, but having a more intricate model (i.e., using more parameters) makes convergence more difficult. The trade-off is between efficiency/robustness and accuracy. Notable errors are obtained when using the model estimates to retrieve IOPs. Importantly, the model parameters that best fit the input data, in particular chlorophyll-a concentration, do not represent adequately actual values. The reconstructed water reflectance should be used in bio-optical algorithms. While neglecting cloud and aerosol transmittances degrades the accuracy of the reconstructed water reflectance and the retrieved IOPs, it negligibly affects water reflectance ratios and, therefore, any variable derived from such ratios.

Observing the Ocean Submesoscale with Enhanced-Color GOES-ABI Visible Band Data

Ocean color remote sensing has long been utilized as a fundamental research tool in the oceanographic investigations of coupled biological-physical processes. Despite numerous technical advances in the application of space borne ocean-viewing radiometers, host satellite platforms in a polar-orbiting configuration often render the temporal frequency of sensor data acquisition insufficient for studies of ocean processes that occur within increasingly smaller space-time scales. Whereas geostationary ocean color missions are presently the exception (GOCI) rather than the rule, this paper presents a method to convolve ocean reflectance data obtained from contemporary ocean-viewing multispectral radiometers (VIIRS, OLCI) with spectrally-limited Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) data obtained from the GOES-R meteorological satellites. The method, Chromatic Domain Mapping (CDM), employs a colorimetry approach to visible range ocean reflectance data. The true color space is used as a frame-of-reference that is mapped by the dedicated yet temporally sparse ocean color sensors; coincident and spectrally coarse information from ABI is then used to estimate the evolution of the true color scene. The procedure results in very high resolution (~5 min) true color image sequences. Herein, example CDM applications of rapid frontal boundary evolution and feature displacement in the Gulf of Mexico are presented and future applications of this technique are discussed.
