Fungal Genetics and Functional Diversity of Microbial Communities in the Soil under Long-Term Monoculture of Maize Using Different Cultivation Techniques

Effect of long-term radish (Raphanus sativus var. sativus) monoculture practice on physiological variability of microorganisms in cultivated soil

Long-term monoculture may affect soil environment biodiversity. An example of such a plant is radish (Raphanus sativus var. sativus), an economically important crop in Poland, a quick-growing vegetable with intensified harvest throughout the season. The aim of this study was to determine changes in biodiversity of soil under radish cultivation and to compare the research methods applied. The monoculture practice affected soil pH, but the organic carbon content remained stable. 16S RNA-seq analysis revealed changes in soil microbial population, with the dominant phyla Proteobacteria (37.3%), Acidobacteria (19%), and Actinobacteria (16%), and the dominant taxa Gaiella (1.59%), Devosia (1.51%) and Nocardioides (1.43%). These changes have not fully expressed in the number of culturable microorganisms, where only fungal abundance changed significantly. However, the physiological state of microbial cells (λ) indicated that oligotrophs and copiotrophs were in a vegetative (λ > 3.0) state at the beginning of the season and fungi at the end of the year. Changes in the biodiversity of soil microorganisms were visualised using Community Level Physiological Profiling, where an oscillation in Average Well Colour Development (OD560 = 0.78-1.48) was observed in successive months of radish culture, with biodiversity indices (Shannon and Substance richness) remaining similar. The greatest variation in the influence of monoculture practice on soil factors was observed for the soil enzymes activities (for dehydrogenase and peroxidase activities - 0.5 μg TPF/h/g DW and 1.5 μmolPYGL/h/g DW respectively). Alkaline phosphatases predominated among this group of enzymes, and the activity of carbon metabolism enzymes decreased over the season, except for invertases, where an increase in activity of up to 50 μg Glc/h/g DW was observed. All the parameters studied indicated changes in the soil environment. Nevertheless the microbial community remains stable during the whole experiment returning to equilibrium in a quite short time after changing conditions.

Bacterial community structure and co-occurrence networks in the rhizosphere and root endosphere of the grafted apple

BACKGROUND

Compared with aerial plant tissues (such as leaf, stem, and flower), root-associated microbiomes play an indisputable role in promoting plant health and productivity. We thus explored the similarities and differences between rhizosphere and root endosphere bacterial community in the grafted apple system.

RESULTS

Using pot experiments, three microhabitats (bulk soil, rhizosphere and root endosphere) samples were obtained from two-year-old apple trees grafted on the four different rootstocks. We then investigated the bacterial community composition, diversity, and co-occurrence network in three microhabitats using the Illumina sequencing methods. Only 63 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) out of a total of 24,485 were shared in the rhizosphere and root endosphere of apple grafted on the four different rootstocks (M9T337, Malus hupehensis Rehd., Malus robusta Rehd., and Malus baccata Borkh.). The core microbiome contained 8 phyla and 25 families. From the bulk soil to the rhizosphere to the root endosphere, the members of the phylum and class levels demonstrated a significant enrichment and depletion pattern. Co-occurrence network analysis showed the network complexity of the rhizosphere was higher than the root endosphere. Most of the keystone nodes in both networks were classified as Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota and Bacteroidetes and were low abundance species.

CONCLUSION

The hierarchical filtration pattern existed not only in the assembly of root endosphere bacteria, but also in the core microbiome. Moreover, most of the core ASVs were high-abundance species, while the keystone ASVs of the network were low-abundance species.

Effects of frequency and amount of stover mulching on soil nitrogen and the microbial functional guilds of the endosphere and rhizosphere

Stover mulching as a conservation and sustainable agricultural practice is beneficial for maintaining soil nitrogen (N) requirements and plant health. The microbial functional guilds of the root and rhizosphere are important factors in the soil nitrogen cycle. However, it is unclear how the frequency and amount of stover mulching influence microbial functional guilds in the root and rhizosphere. Therefore, we investigated the responses of the microbial functional guilds in the endosphere and rhizosphere to maize stover mulching amounts (0, 1/3, 2/3, and total stover mulching every year) and frequencies (once every 3 years and twice every 3 years) under 10-year no-till management. The bacterial functional guilds of nitrogen fixation, nitrification, and anaerobic nitrate oxidation displayed the significantly correlation with C/N, total nitrogen, NO₃⁻, and NH₄⁺. The fungal functional guilds of plant pathogens and saprotrophs showed significantly correlations with C/N, total nitrogen, and NO₃⁻. Moreover, we found that bacterial guilds play a pivotal role in maintaining N requirements at the jointing stage, whereas root endophytic fungal guilds play a more important role than bacterial guilds in regulating plant health at the mature stage. The frequency and amount of stover mulching had significant effects on the microbial functional guilds in the root and rhizosphere. Our data suggest that stover mulch application twice every 3 years is the optimal mulching frequency because it yielded the lowest abundance of nitrifying and anaerobic nitrate-oxidising bacteria and the highest abundance of nitrogen-fixing bacteria at the jointing stage, as well as the lowest abundance of fungal plant pathogens in roots at the mature stage.

Comparison of the Responses of Soil Fungal Community to Straw, Inorganic Fertilizer, and Compost in a Farmland in the Loess Plateau

The Loess Plateau is located in the arid and semi-arid regions in northern China. The ecosystem is particularly sensitive to natural and anthropogenic disturbances. Fungi can produce extracellular enzymes, decompose a variety of organic matter, and regulate carbon and nutrient balance. We studied the changes of soil fungal community compositions in response to straw, inorganic fertilizer, and compost in a typical farmland in the Loess Plateau. Our results demonstrated that the addition of straw significantly reduces the Shannon index of the fungal community, in addition, the participation of straw significantly affects the composition of the fungal community. Functional prediction based on FUNGuild showed that straw significantly reduced the relative abundance of saprotrophs, pathotrophs, symbiotrophs, lichenized, ectomycorrhizal, and plant pathogens. Although fertilization practices destroyed the co-occurrence pattern among the fungal species, the addition of straw alleviated this affect. No significant effect of straw, compost, and inorganic fertilizers on the co-occurrence pattern among species in the soil fungal community was observed. Compared with compost and inorganic fertilizer, the addition of straw shaped the community composition by changing the relative abundance of fungal functional taxa. Thus, in the fragile Loess Plateau environment, over-fertilizing or non-order-fertilizing may destroy the co-occurrence pattern of the fungal communities and Loess Plateau ecosystem. IMPORTANCE Determining the response of soil fungi in sensitive ecosystems to external environmental disturbances is an important, yet little-known, topic in microbial ecology. In this study, we evaluated the impact of traditional fertilization management practices on the composition, co-occurrence pattern, and functional groups of fungal communities in loessial soil. Our results show that in the fragile Loess Plateau environment, fertilizer management changed the composition of the fungal community and disrupted the co-occurrence pattern between fungi. The application of straw alleviates the destroying of the co-occurrence pattern. The current research emphasizes the necessity of rational fertilization of farmland in loessial soil.

Fungal Indicators of Sensitivity and Resistance to Long-Term Maize Monoculture: A Culture-Independent Approach

Although fungi are regarded as very important components of soils, the knowledge of their community in agricultural (monocultural) soils is still limited. This indicates that soil fungal communities are investigated less intensively than bacteria. Therefore, the main goal of this paper was to evaluate the fungal mycobiome structure in monoculture soils in a culture-independent approach. Firstly, the study was conducted to identify the core mycobiome composition and its variability at different stages of the maize growing season (spring, summer, and autumn). Secondly, we identified and recommended fungal indicators of both sensitivity and resistance to long-term maize monoculture. Two neighboring fields from the Potulicka Foundation area were selected for the study: K20 sown with a Gorzow mixture (intercropping mixture) to improve soil quality after a maize monoculture in 2020 and K21, where long-term (over 30 years) monoculture cultivation was continued. The basic chemical features [acidity, redox potential, total organic carbon (TOC), and moisture] of soils were determined, fungal genetic diversity was assessed by ITS next generation sequencing (NGS) analyses, and biodiversity indices were calculated. The results of the NGS technique facilitated recognition and classification of the fungal mycobiome to the taxonomic genus level and changes in the fungal structure in the three periods (spring, summer, and autumn) were assessed. It was evidenced that the mycobiome composition was dependent on both the seasons and the agricultural practices. It was also found that even a 1-year break in the monoculture in favor of an intercropping mixture improved soil properties thus contributing to higher biodiversity. Mortierella was recommended as a potential indicator of sensitivity to long-term maize cultivation, whereas Solicoccozyma and Exophiala were proposed as indicators of resistance to long-term maize cultivation. We proved that the precision farming principles applied on the Potulicka Foundation farm had a very positive effect on fungal biodiversity, which was high even in the long-term maize monoculture field. Therefore, the monoculture cultivation carried out in this way does not induce biological degradation of monoculture soils but preserves their good biological quality.

Functional characterization of culturable fungi from microbiomes of the "conical cobs" Mexican maize (Zea mays L.) landrace

Mexican maize landraces, produced for local consumption, are adapted to different environmental conditions, and their yield is affected by abiotic and biotic factors, including the use of agrochemicals. The search for sustainable alternatives to agrochemicals includes the study of the culturable microbial communities. In this study, the fungal communities associated with 2 Mexican maize landraces reddish and bluish "conical cobs" were found to be comprised of Ascomycota fungi, represented by 89 strains within 6 orders (Pleosporales, Hypocreales, Onygenales, Capnodiales, Helotiales, and Eurotiales) and 16 genera. Cellulases and metallophores production were the primary enzymatic products and plant growth-promoting activities were detected among the isolates. Penicillium, Didymella, and Fusarium strains had the most active enzymatic and plant growth promoting activities, however, Aspergillus sp. HES2-2.2, Talaromyces sp. RS1-7, and Penicillium sp. HFS3-3 showed antagonistic activity against the four phytopathogenic Fusarium strains Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium sambucinum, Fusarium fujikuroi and Fusarium incarnatum-equiseti and also a high and diverse production of enzymatic and plant growth promoting activities; here we identified fungal strains as candidates to promote maize growth.

Identification and phylogenetic analysis of a collection of Beauveria spp. Isolates from Central America and Puerto Rico

The genus Beauveria comprises economically important entomopathogenic fungi, widely used for biological control in agriculture. Interest in these organisms in Costa Rica prompted surveys and establishment of collections in the past two decades. However, there was neither a formal identification nor a characterization of the isolates. With that purpose, the morphology and genetic variation by microsatellites and partial sequencing of Bloc, TEF-1α and RPB2 regions were studied for 32 isolates of Beauveria, which included 26 from Costa Rica, five from Puerto Rico and one from Honduras. The isolates were identified as B. bassiana (29) and B. caledonica (3). Ninety-three percent of B. bassiana isolates belonged to a monophyletic group of African and Neotropical isolates. A total of 105 alleles were recorded with 11 SSR markers, and the results suggested high diversity within the collection. Mantel tests showed low association between geographic origin and the variation among isolates.

Soil Microbial Indicators within Rotations and Tillage Systems

Recent advancements in agricultural metagenomics allow for characterizing microbial indicators of soil health brought on by changes in management decisions, which ultimately affect the soil environment. Field-scale studies investigating the microbial taxa from agricultural experiments are sparse, with none investigating the long-term effect of crop rotation and tillage on microbial indicator species. Therefore, our goal was to determine the effect of rotations (continuous corn, CCC; continuous soybean, SSS; and each phase of a corn-soybean rotation, Cs and Sc) and tillage (no-till, NT; and chisel tillage, T) on the soil microbial community composition following 20 years of management. We found that crop rotation and tillage influence the soil environment by altering key soil properties, such as pH and soil organic matter (SOM). Monoculture corn lowered pH compared to SSS (5.9 vs. 6.9, respectively) but increased SOM (5.4% vs. 4.6%, respectively). Bacterial indicator microbes were categorized into two groups: SOM dependent and acidophile vs. N adverse and neutrophile. Fungi preferred the CCC rotation, characterized by low pH. Archaeal indicators were mainly ammonia oxidizers with species occupying niches at contrasting pHs. Numerous indicator microbes are involved with N cycling due to the fertilizer-rich environment, prone to aquatic or gaseous losses.

Effect of Low-Input Organic and Conventional Farming Systems on Maize Rhizosphere in Two Portuguese Open-Pollinated Varieties (OPV), "Pigarro" (Improved Landrace) and "SinPre" (a Composite Cross Population)

Maize is one of the most important crops worldwide and is the number one arable crop in Portugal. A transition from the conventional farming system to organic agriculture requires optimization of cultivars and management, the interaction of plant-soil rhizosphere microbiota being pivotal. The objectives of this study were to unravel the effect of population genotype and farming system on microbial communities in the rhizosphere of maize. Rhizosphere soil samples of two open-pollinated maize populations ("SinPre" and "Pigarro") cultivated under conventional and organic farming systems were taken during flowering and analyzed by next-generation sequencing (NGS). Phenological data were collected from the replicated field trial. A total of 266 fungi and 317 bacteria genera were identified in "SinPre" and "Pigarro" populations, of which 186 (69.9%) and 277 (87.4%) were shared among them. The microbiota of "Pigarro" showed a significant higher (P < 0.05) average abundance than the microbiota of "SinPre." The farming system had a statistically significant impact (P < 0.05) on the soil rhizosphere microbiota, and several fungal and bacterial taxa were found to be farming system-specific. The rhizosphere microbiota diversity in the organic farming system was higher than that in the conventional system for both varieties. The presence of arbuscular mycorrhizae (Glomeromycota) was mainly detected in the microbiota of the "SinPre" population under the organic farming systems and very rare under conventional systems. A detailed metagenome function prediction was performed. At the fungal level, pathotroph-saprotroph and pathotroph-symbiotroph lifestyles were modified by the farming system. For bacterial microbiota, the main functions altered by the farming system were membrane transport, transcription, translation, cell motility, and signal transduction. This study allowed identifying groups of microorganisms known for their role as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and with the capacity to improve crop tolerance for stress conditions, allowing to minimize the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Arbuscular mycorrhizae (phyla Glomeromycota) were among the most important functional groups in the fungal microbiota and Achromobacter, Burkholderia, Erwinia, Lysinibacillus, Paenibacillus, Pseudomonas, and Stenotrophomonas in the bacterial microbiota. In this perspective, the potential role of these microorganisms will be explored in future research.

Fungal microbiome of barley grain revealed by NGS and mycological analysis

Introduction. Barley can be infected with a broad variety of fungi, which can cause considerable loss of crop yield and reduce the quality of grain. Modern vision on the geographical and ecological distribution and biodiversity of micromycetes has been established by traditional, cultivation-based methods. However, more recently, molecular methods have shifted microbiological research to a new level, making it possible to investigate hidden taxonomical biodiversity. Study objects and methods. For this study, we determined the fungal biome on the surface and inside of barley grains using the traditional mycological method and the contemporary molecular method, which employed DNA metabarcoding based on NGS (nextgeneration sequencing) of the ITS2 region. We analyzed five cultivars that were collected in two subsequent crop seasons (2014, 2015). Results and discussion. DNA metabarcoding revealed 43 operational taxonomic units, while 17 taxa of genus or species level were recovered by the traditional method. DNA metabarcoding revealed several minor species and one predominant, presumably plantpathogenic Phaeosphaeria sp., which were not detected in the agar plate-based assay. Traditionally, Fusarium fungi were identified by mycological assay. However, the resolution of DNA metabarcoding was sufficient to determine main Fusarium groups divided by ability to produce toxic secondary metabolites. The combined list of Ascomycetes consisted of 15 genera, including 14 fungi identified to species level. The list of Basidiomycota derived from DNA metabarcoding data alone included 8 genera. Conclusion. It was found that crop season predetermines the fungal community structure; mycobiota on the surface and inside of grain was significantly different.

Fungal Community, Metabolic Diversity, and Glomalin-Related Soil Proteins (GRSP) Content in Soil Contaminated With Crude Oil After Long-Term Natural Bioremediation

Fungi have increased tolerance to environmental stress (also related to the access of pollutants, e.g., trace elements and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons PAHs). The aim of the study was to evaluate the mycobiome and functional diversity of fungi in long-term crude-oil contaminated soils as the potential bioremediators of oil contaminated sites. Samples were taken from three historical oil wells (over a century old) at two distances: within a 0.5 m radius of the oil wells (OWP1, OWP2, and OWP3) and within a 3 m radius from the oil wells as the controls (OW1, OW2, and OW3). Next generation sequencing (for the ITS region) was accompanied with determination of the functional fungal community based on Biolog FFPlates, glomalin related soil protein (GRSP) content, trace element and PAHs concentration. The research hypothesis assumed that long-term natural bioremediation of crude oil contaminated soils can contribute to intensive development of a unique fungal community adapted to the contamination conditions. The identification of such fungi can be of particular importance in soil bioremediation. There were significant differences in the fungal community and functional diversity between the soil samples. The soils collected directly from the oil wells were characterized by higher biological activity and higher diversity of PAH-degrading fungal candidates compared to the soils collected within 3 m of the oil wells. The total glomalin-related soil proteins (T-GRSP) and easily-extractable glomalin-related soil proteins (EE-GRSP) contents were lower in soil samples taken directly from the crude oil well. The control soil (OW) subjected to a long-term natural remediation may already have sufficient conditions for the growth and development of mycorrhizal fungi. The mycobiome of the soils collected directly from the oil wells (OWP1, OWP2, and OWP3) was characterized by a 35% share of PAH-degrading candidates, compared to the soil collected at the 3 m distance from the oil wells (OW1, OW2, and OW3) at < 5%. The main PAH-degrading fungal candidates belong to genera Ilyonectria, Chaetomium, Gibberella, Paraphoma, Schizothecium, Pseudorobillarda, Tetracladium, Ganoderma, Cadophora, Exophiala, Knufia, Mycoleptodiscus, Cyphellophora, Fusicolla, Devriesia, Didymella, Plenodomus, Pyrenochaetopsis, Symbiotaphrina, Phallus, Coprinellus, Plectosphaerella, Septoriella, and Hypholoma. The share of three- and four-ringed PAHs in soil was higher as the distance from the oil well increased. These results may indicate that more effective degradation processes occur closer to the oil wells.

The importance of edaphic niches functionality for the sustainability of phytomanagement in semiarid mining impacted ecosystems

Mining activities on metal sulphide ores are considered one of the most environmentally damaging anthropogenic activities worldwide, mainly due to the production of metal(loid)- enriched tailings. The objective of the work was to elucidate which factors, including edaphic, vegetation and microbiological aspects, determine soil functionality in the phytomagement of mine tailings piles in semiarid areas. For this purpose, a field study was conducted using a transect experimental design in a former mining area located in southern Spain. Soil characteristics, including edaphic parameters, bacterial and fungal compositions, were determined. The variation in edaphic parameters (pH, electrical conductivity, organic carbon, particle size distribution, etc) through the deterioration transect caused a decrease in plant and microbial diversities, as well as in microbial productivity measured by enzymatic activities. Variation in bacterial relative abundances through the transect was better explained by soil fertility related factors, such as organic matter, pH, salinity, enzymatic activities or microbial biomass (which in turn were related to the presence of plants), than by metals concentrations. The presence of vegetation at the tailings allowed the transition from lithotrophic bacterial orders which dominated in bare tailings areas (e.g. Acidimicrobiales, Chromatiales) to organotrophic oriented orders (e.g. Cytophagales, Actinomycetales). Vegetated patches at the tailings pile and its borders shared some organotrophic bacteria with control forest samples (e.g. Rhizobiales), indicating that natural plant mediated successional processes might stimulate biogeochemical cycles similar to those occurring at non-polluted systems. This functionality of the impacted sites, which include unfavourable edaphic conditions, should be taken into account in the phytomanagement of mine tailings, since it may support its long-term sustainability. Unlike bacteria, variations in fungal relative abundances through the transect were not clearly explained by soil parameters or the presence of plants. Other factors related to spatial distribution or the type of organic substrates may be more determinant in the case of fungi.

GlobalFungi, a global database of fungal occurrences from high-throughput-sequencing metabarcoding studies

Fungi are key players in vital ecosystem services, spanning carbon cycling, decomposition, symbiotic associations with cultivated and wild plants and pathogenicity. The high importance of fungi in ecosystem processes contrasts with the incompleteness of our understanding of the patterns of fungal biogeography and the environmental factors that drive those patterns. To reduce this gap of knowledge, we collected and validated data published on the composition of soil fungal communities in terrestrial environments including soil and plant-associated habitats and made them publicly accessible through a user interface at https://globalfungi.com . The GlobalFungi database contains over 600 million observations of fungal sequences across > 17 000 samples with geographical locations and additional metadata contained in 178 original studies with millions of unique nucleotide sequences (sequence variants) of the fungal internal transcribed spacers (ITS) 1 and 2 representing fungal species and genera. The study represents the most comprehensive atlas of global fungal distribution, and it is framed in such a way that third-party data addition is possible.

Changes of Microbial Diversity in Rhizosphere Soils of New Quality Varieties of Winter Wheat Cultivation in Organic Farming

The aim of this paper was to evaluation functional diversity in rhizosphere soils of new quality varieties of winter wheat cultivation in organic farming. Field experiments were carried out in 2017 and 2018. Twelve commercial winter wheat varieties were selected for testing: Arktis, Bellisa, Estivus, Fidelius, Hondia, Jantarka, KWS Ozon, Linus, Markiza, Ostka Strzelecka, Pokusa, and Rokosz. Winter wheat cultivars were chosen for their high yielding potential and good tolerance to fungal diseases. In the plant production conducted in accordance with the principles of organic farming, the selection of the best quality varieties is a key element of agrotechnics. The samples of rhizosphere soils were collected each year in two seasons: spring and summer. The basic parameters of soil biological activities and microbial biodiversity indicators were determined. The high variability of biological activity and functional diversity of rhizosphere soils in the growing season between particular varieties of winter wheat was observed. The rhizosphere soils from varieties such as Bellisa, Arktis, Jantarka, Fidelius, Ostka Strzelecka, Pokusa, Rokosz and KWS Ozon were characterized by high biological activity and functional biodiversity. On the other hand, the soils collected from the varieties Estivus, Fidelius, Jantarkaand Hondia were characterized by medium and low biological activity and biodiversity indices. The highest yield was found in winter wheat varieties such as Bellisa, Fidelius and Jantarka. The results of these analyses allows for a more complete characterization of the yield potential of the tested varieties and their suitability for cultivation in the conditions of organic farming, taking into account the biological activity of soils.

Analysis of Soil Properties, Bacterial Community Composition, and Metabolic Diversity in Fluvisols of a Floodplain Area

The quality of a soil environment affects the microbial community that inhabits it. We decided to examine whether soils formed from river sediments, located in an area of high biodiversity of organisms, are fertile and microbiologically diverse. Fluvisols are considered to be one of the most fertile soils. In this research, bacterial and metabolic diversity, as well as physico–chemical parameters, in three Fluvisols from the Vistula River Gorge of Lesser Poland was investigated. The analysis of physico–chemical and biological parameters demonstrated statistically significant differences between the three Fluvisols examined. While determining the metabolic potential of soil microbiomes with the use of the EcoPlate™ Biolog® technique, we also noted variation between the Fluvisols; however, they were arranged in a significantly different manner from other properties. The next generation sequencing method enabled us to determine the microorganisms common to three Fluvisols, and we identified bacteria specific to individual soils. These results corresponded with the data obtained through EcoPlate™, indicating that the structural diversity and metabolic potential of the microbiome does not always depend on soil quality parameters. Meanwhile, the increased structural diversity of the microbiome was found to improve the metabolic potential of soil microorganisms.

Perspectives of Microbial Inoculation for Sustainable Development and Environmental Management

How to sustainably feed a growing global population is a question still without an answer. Particularly farmers, to increase production, tend to apply more fertilizers and pesticides, a trend especially predominant in developing countries. Another challenge is that industrialization and other human activities produce pollutants, which accumulate in soils or aquatic environments, contaminating them. Not only is human well-being at risk, but also environmental health. Currently, recycling, land-filling, incineration and pyrolysis are being used to reduce the concentration of toxic pollutants from contaminated sites, but too have adverse effects on the environment, producing even more resistant and highly toxic intermediate compounds. Moreover, these methods are expensive, and are difficult to execute for soil, water, and air decontamination. Alternatively, green technologies are currently being developed to degrade toxic pollutants. This review provides an overview of current research on microbial inoculation as a way to either replace or reduce the use of agrochemicals and clean environments heavily affected by pollution. Microorganism-based inoculants that enhance nutrient uptake, promote crop growth, or protect plants from pests and diseases can replace agrochemicals in food production. Several examples of how biofertilizers and biopesticides enhance crop production are discussed. Plant roots can be colonized by a variety of favorable species and genera that promote plant growth. Microbial interventions can also be used to clean contaminated sites from accumulated pesticides, heavy metals, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and other industrial effluents. The potential of and key processes used by microorganisms for sustainable development and environmental management are discussed in this review, followed by their future prospects.
