Microbial Community and Metabolic Activity in Thiocyanate Degrading Low Temperature Microbial Fuel Cells

Treatment of thiocyanate-containing wastewater: a critical review of thiocyanate destruction in industrial effluents

Thiocyanate is a common pollutant in gold mine, textile, printing, dyeing, coking and other industries. Therefore, thiocyanate in industrial wastewater is an urgent problem to be solved. This paper reviews the chemical properties, applications, sources and toxicity of thiocyanate, as well as the various treatment methods for thiocyanate in wastewater and their advantages and disadvantages. It is emphasized that biological systems, ranging from laboratory to full-scale, are able to successfully remove thiocyanate from factories. Thiocyanate-degrading microorganisms degrade thiocyanate in autotrophic manner for energy, while other biodegrading microorganisms use thiocyanate as a carbon or nitrogen source, and the biochemical pathways and enzymes involved in thiocyanate metabolism by different bacteria are discussed in detail. In the future, degradation mechanisms should be investigated at the molecular level, with further research aiming to improve the biochemical understanding of thiocyanate metabolism and scaling up thiocyanate degradation technologies from the laboratory to a full-scale.

An Overview of Emerging Cyanide Bioremediation Methods

Cyanide compounds are hazardous compounds which are extremely toxic to living organisms, especially free cyanide in the form of hydrogen cyanide gas (HCN) and cyanide ion (CN−). These cyanide compounds are metabolic inhibitors since they can tightly bind to the metals of metalloenzymes. Anthropogenic sources contribute significantly to CN− contamination in the environment, more specifically to surface and underground waters. The treatment processes, such as chemical and physical treatment processes, have been implemented. However, these processes have drawbacks since they generate additional contaminants which further exacerbates the environmental pollution. The biological treatment techniques are mostly overlooked as an alternative to the conventional physical and chemical methods. However, the recent research has focused substantially on this method, with different reactor configurations that were proposed. However, minimal attention was given to the emerging technologies that sought to accelerate the treatment with a subsequent resource recovery from the process. Hence, this review focuses on the recent emerging tools that can be used to accelerate cyanide biodegradation. These tools include, amongst others, electro-bioremediation, anaerobic biodegradation and the use of microbial fuel cell technology. These processes were demonstrated to have the possibility of producing value-added products, such as biogas, co-factors of neurotransmitters and electricity from the treatment process.

Single-cell metagenomics and metagenomics approaches reveal extracellular electron transfer of psychrophilic electroactive biofilms

Revealing the metabolic functions and the extracellular electron transfer (EET) process of psychrophilic electroactive biofilms (PEB) is important for understanding the functional adaptability of electroactive bacteria (EAB) to low temperatures. In this study, single cell sorting (SCS)-based metagenomics sequencing was used to characterize the composition and function of the PEB. Biofilm microbiome analysis showed that Geobacter, with a relative abundance of 62.64%, dominated the PEB enriched in the bioelectrochemical system (BES) at 4 °C. Both the metagenome (MAG) and single-cell metagenome (SCM) revealed that there were no obvious metabolic differences between the original biofilm and the sorted single cells. The presence of genes associated with type IV pilus, c-type cytochromes, and riboflavin indicated that the EET potential was maintained in the PEB at low temperatures. These results suggested that SCM provides an alternative approach to reconstruct the metabolic functions of uncultured and slow-growing EAB.
