Exploring trends in reproductive system microbiome research in farm animals: A bibliometric approach

This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of literature on the microbiome of reproductive systems in farm animals, utilizing data from the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases. The primary aim was to evaluate the scientific content and bibliometric characteristics of articles published on the reproductive tract microbiome in farm animals. The advanced tool Bibliometrix was employed to explore bibliometric networks, providing insights into the scope of microbiome research within this field. Findings indicate that research in reproductive microbiomes is still emerging, with significant contributions from developed countries, particularly the United States, China, Brazil, and Spain. The field remains heavily focused on bovine studies, while substantial knowledge gaps persist regarding other livestock, including ovines, caprines, and camelids. One of the most notable advancements in this area has been the adoption of next-generation sequencing (NGS), which has shifted microbiome research away from labour-intensive, culture-based methods to culture-independent, high-throughput approaches. Although NGS has significantly facilitated the study of bacterial communities within reproductive systems, limited research has been conducted on fungal and viral microbiomes. This bacterial emphasis is partly due to the accessibility and cost of NGS technologies, which remain prohibitively high for many institutions in developing regions, thus limiting participation. Clustering analysis identified three main themes: genetic influences on pregnancy, microbial-reproductive health interactions, and male fertility with a focus on sperm quality. Additionally, emerging research topics were identified, including microbial species associated with reproductive diseases in livestock.

Influential articles in autism and gut microbiota: bibliometric profile and research trends

Objective

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder. Increasing evidence suggests that it is potentially related to gut microbiota, but no prior bibliometric analysis has been performed to explore the most influential works in the relationships between ASD and gut microbiota. In this study, we conducted an in-depth analysis of the most-cited articles in this field, aiming to provide insights to the existing body of research and guide future directions.

Methods

A search strategy was constructed and conducted in the Web of Science database to identify the 100 most-cited papers in ASD and gut microbiota. The Biblioshiny package in R was used to analyze and visualize the relevant information, including citation counts, country distributions, authors, journals, and thematic analysis. Correlation and comparison analyses were performed using SPSS software.

Results

The top 100 influential manuscripts were published between 2000 and 2021, with a total citation of 40,662. The average number of citations annually increased over the years and was significantly correlated to the year of publication (r = 0.481, p < 0.01, Spearman's rho test). The United States was involved in the highest number of publications (n = 42). The number of publications in the journal was not significantly related to the journal's latest impact factor (r = 0.016, p > 0.05, Spearman's rho test). Co-occurrence network and thematic analysis identified several important areas, such as microbial metabolites of short-chain fatty acids and overlaps with irritable bowel syndrome.

Conclusion

This bibliometric analysis provides the key information of the most influential studies in the area of ASD and gut microbiota, and suggests the hot topics and future directions. The findings of this study can serve as a valuable reference for researchers and policymakers, guiding the development and implementation of the scientific research strategies in this area.

Exploring microbial worlds: a review of whole genome sequencing and its application in characterizing the microbial communities

The classical microbiology techniques have inherent limitations in unraveling the complexity of microbial communities, necessitating the pivotal role of sequencing in studying the diversity of microbial communities. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) enables researchers to uncover the metabolic capabilities of the microbial community, providing valuable insights into the microbiome. Herein, we present an overview of the rapid advancements achieved thus far in the use of WGS in microbiome research. There was an upsurge in publications, particularly in 2021 and 2022 with the United States, China, and India leading the metagenomics research landscape. The Illumina platform has emerged as the widely adopted sequencing technology, whereas a significant focus of metagenomics has been on understanding the relationship between the gut microbiome and human health where distinct bacterial species have been linked to various diseases. Additionally, studies have explored the impact of human activities on microbial communities, including the potential spread of pathogenic bacteria and antimicrobial resistance genes in different ecosystems. Furthermore, WGS is used in investigating the microbiome of various animal species and plant tissues such as the rhizosphere microbiome. Overall, this review reflects the importance of WGS in metagenomics studies and underscores its remarkable power in illuminating the variety and intricacy of the microbiome in different environments.

Research trends on airway remodeling: A bibliometrics analysis

Background

Airway remodeling is an essential pathological basis of respiratory diseases such as asthma and COPD, which is significantly related to pulmonary function and clinical symptoms. And pulmonary disease can be improved by regulating airway remodeling. This study aimed to establish a knowledge map of airway remodeling to clarify current research hotspots and future research trends.

Methods

A comprehensive search was performed to analyze all relevant articles on airway remodeling using the Web of Science Core Collection Database from January 01, 2004 to June 03, 2023.2 reviewers screened the retrieved literature. Besides, the CiteSpace (6.2. R3) and VOSviewer (1.6.19) were utilized to visualize the research focus and trend regarding the effect of airway remodeling.

Results

A total of 4077 articles about airway remodeling were retrieved. The United States is the country with the most published literature, underscoring the country's role in airway remodeling. In recent years, China has been the country with the fastest growth in the number of published literature, suggesting that China will play a more critical role in airway remodeling in the future. From the perspective of co-operation among countries, European co-operation was closer than Asian co-operation. The co-citation analysis showed that 98,313 citations were recorded in 3594 articles, and 25 clusters could be realized. In recent years, Burst detection shows that oxidative stress and epithelial-mesenchymal transition are hot words.

Conclusions

Based on the bibliometric analysis of airway remodeling studies in the past 20 years, a multi-level knowledge structure map was drawn, it mainly includes countries, institutions, research fields, authors, journals, keywords and so on. The research directions represented by obstructive airway disease, PDGF-BB treatment of airway smooth muscle, allergen-induced airway remodeling, extracellular matrix, and non-coding RNA are the research hotspots in the field of airway remodeling. While the risk factors for airway remodeling, the application of new noninvasively assessing tools, biomarkers as well as The molecular mechanism represented by EMT and autophagy had been frontiers in recent years.
