Neural correlates of thermal stimulation during active touch

Introduction

Thermal feedback technologies have been explored in human-computer interaction to provide secondary information and enhance the overall user experience. Unlike fast-response haptic modalities such as vibration and force feedback, the human brain's processes associated with thermal feedback are not fully understood.

Methods

In this study, we utilize electroencephalography (EEG) brain imaging to systematically examine the neural correlates associated with a wide range of thermal stimuli, including 9, 15, 32, and 42°C, during active touch at the fingertip. A custom experimental setup is developed to provide thermal stimulation at the desirable temperature levels. A total of 30 participants are recruited to experience the four levels of thermal stimulation by actively touching a thermal stimulation unit with the index finger while recording brain activities via EEG. Time-frequency analysis and power spectral density (PSD) of the EEG data are utilized to analyze the delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma frequency bands.

Results

The results show that the delta, theta, and alpha PSDs of 9 and 15°C stimuli are significantly higher than the PSDs of 32 and 42°C in the right frontal area during the early stage of the stimulation, from 282 ms up to 1,108 ms (One-way ANOVA test, Holm-Bonferroni correction, p < 0.05). No significant differences in PSDs are found between 9 and 15°C thermal stimuli or between 32 and 42°C thermal stimuli.

Discussion

The findings of this study inform the development of thermal feedback system in human-computer interaction.

Friction and neuroimaging of active and passive tactile touch

Two types of exploratory touch including active sliding and passive sliding are usually encountered in the daily life. The friction behavior of the human finger against the surface of objects is important in tactile perception. The neural mechanisms correlating to tribological behavior are not fully understood. This study investigated the tactile response of active and passive finger friction characterized with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The friction test and fNIRS test were performed simultaneously using the tactile stimulus of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) specimens. Results showed that the sliding modes did not obviously influence the friction property of skin. While three cortex regions were activated in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), showing a higher activation level of passive sliding. This revealed that the tribological performance was not a simple parameter to affect tactile perception, and the difference in cortical hemodynamic activity of active and passive touch was also recognised. The movement-related blood flow changes revealed the role of PFC in integrating tactile sensation although there was no estimation task on roughness perception.

EEG-based functional connectivity for tactile roughness discrimination

Tactile sensation and perception involve cooperation between different parts of the brain. Roughness discrimination is an important phase of texture recognition. In this study, we investigated how different roughness levels would influence the brain network characteristics. We recorded EEG signals from nine right-handed healthy subjects who underwent touching three surfaces with different levels of roughness. The experiment was separately repeated in 108 trials for each hand for both static and dynamic touch. For estimation of the functional connectivity between brain regions, the phase lag index method was employed. Frequency-specific connectivity patterns were observed in the ipsilateral and contralateral hemispheres to the hand of interest, for delta, theta, alpha, and beta frequency bands under the study. A number of connections were identified to be in charge of discrimination between surfaces in both alpha and beta frequency bands for the left hand in static touch and for the right hand in dynamic touch. In addition, common connections were determined in both hands for all three roughness in alpha band for static touch and in theta band for dynamic touch. The common connections were identified for the smooth surface in beta band for static touch and in delta and alpha bands for dynamic touch. As observed for static touch in alpha band and for dynamic touch in theta band, the number of common connections between the two hands was decreased by increasing the surface roughness. The results of this research would extend the current knowledge about tactile information processing in the brain.
