Alternative strategy for driving voltage-oscillator in neocortex of rats

Information integration in the brain requires functional connectivity between local neural networks. Here, we investigated the interregional coupling mechanism from the viewpoint of oscillations using optical recording methods. Low-frequency electrical stimulation of rat neocortical slices in a caffeine-containing medium induced oscillatory activity between the primary visual cortex (Oc1) and medial secondary visual cortex (Oc2M), in which the oscillation generator was located in the Oc2M and was triggered by a feedforward signal. During to-and-fro oscillatory activity, neural excitation was marked in layer II/III. When the upper layer was disrupted between Oc1 and Oc2M, feedforward signals could propagate through the deep layer and switch on the oscillator in the Oc2M. When the lower layer was disrupted between Oc1 and Oc2M, feedforward signals could propagate through the upper layer and switch on the oscillator in the Oc2M. In the backward direction, neither the upper layer cut nor the lower layer cut disrupted the propagation of the oscillations. In all cases, the horizontal and vertical pathways were used as needed. Fluctuations in the oscillatory waveforms of the local field potential at the upper and lower layers in the Oc2M were reversed, suggesting that the oscillation originated between the two layers. Thus, the neocortex may work as a safety device for interregional communications in an alternative way to drive voltage oscillators in the neocortex.

Learning Long Temporal Sequences in Spiking Networks by Multiplexing Neural Oscillations

Many cognitive and behavioral tasks-such as interval timing, spatial navigation, motor control, and speech-require the execution of precisely-timed sequences of neural activation that cannot be fully explained by a succession of external stimuli. We show how repeatable and reliable patterns of spatiotemporal activity can be generated in chaotic and noisy spiking recurrent neural networks. We propose a general solution for networks to autonomously produce rich patterns of activity by providing a multi-periodic oscillatory signal as input. We show that the model accurately learns a variety of tasks, including speech generation, motor control, and spatial navigation. Further, the model performs temporal rescaling of natural spoken words and exhibits sequential neural activity commonly found in experimental data involving temporal processing. In the context of spatial navigation, the model learns and replays compressed sequences of place cells and captures features of neural activity such as the emergence of ripples and theta phase precession. Together, our findings suggest that combining oscillatory neuronal inputs with different frequencies provides a key mechanism to generate precisely timed sequences of activity in recurrent circuits of the brain.

Neuronal pattern separation of motion-relevant input in LIP activity

In various regions of the brain, neurons discriminate sensory stimuli by decreasing the similarity between ambiguous input patterns. Here, we examine whether this process of pattern separation may drive the rapid discrimination of visual motion stimuli in the lateral intraparietal area (LIP). Starting with a simple mean-rate population model that captures neuronal activity in LIP, we show that overlapping input patterns can be reformatted dynamically to give rise to separated patterns of neuronal activity. The population model predicts that a key ingredient of pattern separation is the presence of heterogeneity in the response of individual units. Furthermore, the model proposes that pattern separation relies on heterogeneity in the temporal dynamics of neural activity and not merely in the mean firing rates of individual neurons over time. We confirm these predictions in recordings of macaque LIP neurons and show that the accuracy of pattern separation is a strong predictor of behavioral performance. Overall, results propose that LIP relies on neuronal pattern separation to facilitate decision-relevant discrimination of sensory stimuli.NEW & NOTEWORTHY A new hypothesis is proposed on the role of the lateral intraparietal (LIP) region of cortex during rapid decision making. This hypothesis suggests that LIP alters the representation of ambiguous inputs to reduce their overlap, thus improving sensory discrimination. A combination of computational modeling, theoretical analysis, and electrophysiological data shows that the pattern separation hypothesis links neural activity to behavior and offers novel predictions on the role of LIP during sensory discrimination.

Broadband macroscopic cortical oscillations emerge from intrinsic neuronal response failures

Broadband spontaneous macroscopic neural oscillations are rhythmic cortical firing which were extensively examined during the last century, however, their possible origination is still controversial. In this work we show how macroscopic oscillations emerge in solely excitatory random networks and without topological constraints. We experimentally and theoretically show that these oscillations stem from the counterintuitive underlying mechanism-the intrinsic stochastic neuronal response failures (NRFs). These NRFs, which are characterized by short-term memory, lead to cooperation among neurons, resulting in sub- or several- Hertz macroscopic oscillations which coexist with high frequency gamma oscillations. A quantitative interplay between the statistical network properties and the emerging oscillations is supported by simulations of large networks based on single-neuron in-vitro experiments and a Langevin equation describing the network dynamics. Results call for the examination of these oscillations in the presence of inhibition and external drives.
