Abstract
Spiking neural networks are able to control with high precision the rotation and force of single-joint robotic arms when shape memory alloy wires are used for actuation. Bio-inspired robotic arms such as anthropomorphic fingers include more junctions that are actuated simultaneously. Starting from the hypothesis that the motor cortex groups the control of multiple muscles into neural synergies, this work presents for the first time an SNN structure that is able to control a series of finger motions by activation of groups of neurons that drive the corresponding actuators in sequence. The initial motion starts when a command signal is received, while the subsequent ones are initiated based on the sensors’ output. In order to increase the biological plausibility of the control system, the finger is flexed and extended by four SMA wires connected to the phalanges as the main tendons. The results show that the artificial finger that is controlled by the SNN is able to smoothly perform several motions of the human index finger while the command signal is active. To evaluate the advantages of using SNN, we compared the finger behaviours when the SMA actuators are driven by SNN, and by a microcontroller, respectively. In addition, we designed an electronic circuit that models the sensor’s output in concordance with the SNN output.

Abstract
Gravity provides critical information for the adjustment of body movement or manipulation of the handheld object. Indeed, the changes in gravity modify the mechanical constraints of prehensile actions, which may be accompanied by the changes in control strategies. The current study examined the effect of the gravitational force of a handheld object on the control strategies for subactions of multidigit prehension. A total of eight subjects performed prehensile tasks while grasping and lifting the handle by about 250 mm along the vertical direction. The experiment consisted of two conditions: lifting gravity-induced (1g) and weightless (0g) handheld objects. The weightless object condition was implemented utilizing a robot arm that produced a constant antigravitational force of the handle. The current analysis was limited to the two-dimensional grasping plane, and the notion of the virtual finger was employed to formulate the cause–effect chain of elemental variables during the prehensile action. The results of correlation analyses confirmed that decoupled organization of two subsets of mechanical variables was observed in both 1g and 0g conditions. While lifting the handle, the two subsets of variables were assumed to contribute to the grasping and rotational equilibrium, respectively. Notably, the normal forces of the thumb and virtual finger had strong positive correlations. In contrast, the normal forces had no significant relationship with the variables as to the moment of force. We conclude that the gravitational force had no detrimental effect on adjustments of the mechanical variables for the rotational action and its decoupling from the grasping equilibrium.

Abstract
Behavioral stability partially depends on the variability of net outcomes by means of the co-varied adjustment of individual elements such as multi-finger forces. The properties of cyclic actions affect stability and variability of the performance as well as the activation of the prefrontal cortex that is an origin of subcortical structure for the coordinative actions. Little research has been done on the issue of the relationship between stability and neuronal response. The purpose of the study was to investigate the changes in the neural response, particularly at the prefrontal cortex, to the frequencies of isometric cyclic finger force production. The main experimental task was to produce finger forces while matching the produced force to sine-wave templates as accurately as possible. Also, the hemodynamics responses of the prefrontal cortex, including oxy-hemoglobin concentration (ΔHbO) and the functional connectivity, were measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. The frequency conditions comprised 0.1, 1, and 2 Hz. The uncontrolled manifold (UCM) approach was applied to compute synergy indices in time-series. The relative phase (RP), the coefficient of variation (CV) of the peak and trough force values were computed as the indices of performance accuracy. The statistical parametric mapping (SPM) was implemented to compare the synergy indices of three frequency conditions in time-series. A less accurate performance in the high-frequency condition was caused not by the RP, but mainly by the inconsistent peak force values (CV; p < 0.01, η p 2 = 0.90). The SPM analysis revealed that the synergy indices were larger in the low-frequency than in high-frequency conditions. Further, the ΔHbO remained unchanged under all frequency conditions, while the functional connectivity decreased with an increase in the frequency of cyclic force production. The current results suggested that the concurrent activation of the prefrontal region mainly depends on the frequency of cyclic force production, which was associated with the strength of stability indices and performance errors. The current study is the first work to uncover the effect of frequency on the multi-finger synergies as to the hemodynamic response in the prefrontal cortex, which possibly provides a clue of the neural mechanism of synergy formation and its changes.

Abstract
The authors examined how the stability of the current total isometric force (FT) produced by four fingers is influenced by previous and expected voluntary changes in FT. The authors employed the synergy index obtained from the across-trial uncontrolled manifold analysis to quantify the stability of FT. The authors compared two tasks with similar histories of FT changes; one in which participants expected changes in FT in the future, and one in which they expected no changes in FT. The stability of FT was lower in the former task, indicating the existence of a novel type of anticipatory synergy adjustment. Disparate histories of FT changes yield inconsistent changes in stability, driven by individual differences in the covariation in the finger forces that leave FT invariant. Future research should focus on exploring these individual differences to better understand how previous and expected behavior changes influence the stability of the current motor behavior.

Abstract
Muscle synergy is important for simplifying functional movement, which constitutes spatiotemporal patterns of activity across muscles. To execute selective finger movements that are independent of synergistic movement patterns, we hypothesized that inhibitory neural activity is necessary to suppress enslaved finger movement caused by synergist muscles. To test this hypothesis, we focused on a pair of synergist muscles used in the hand opening movement, namely the index finger abductor and little finger abductor (abductor digiti minimi; ADM), and examined whether inhibitory neural activity in ADM occurs during selective index finger abduction/adduction movements and/or its imagery using transcranial magnetic stimulation and F-wave analysis. During the index finger adduction movement, background EMG activity, F-wave persistence, and motor evoked potential (MEP) amplitude in ADM were elevated. However, during the index finger abduction movement, ADM MEP amplitude remained unchanged despite increased background EMG activity and F-wave persistence. These results suggest that increased spinal excitability in ADM is counterbalanced by cortical-mediated inhibition only during selective index finger abduction movement. This assumption was further supported by the results of motor imagery experiments. Although F-wave persistence in ADM increased only during motor imagery of index finger abduction, ADM MEP amplitude during motor imagery of index finger abduction was significantly lower than that during adduction. Overall, our findings indicate that cortical-mediated inhibition contributes to the execution of selective finger movements that are independent of synergistic hand movement patterns.

Abstract
Anticipatory synergy adjustment (ASA) is a feed-forward control mechanism that describes a continuous decrease in the stability of the current motor state beginning about 150 ms prior to a state transition. Recently, we described an associated phenomenon in which the system stability was reduced solely in response to a cue that generates an expectation of a state change, independent of whether the state change actually occurs. Both phenomena are of the same kind (stability reduction), but evoked by distinct antecedent conditions. Since, logically, cuing for movement must occur before the initiation of that movement, we named this new phenomenon 'Stage-1 ASA' and rechristened the well-established version 'Stage-2 ASA'. Here, we used a four-finger, isometric force production task to explore (1) the effect of healthy aging on Stage-1 ASA, and (2) if Stage-1 ASA resulted in a more rapid state change. Young and older adult participants produced 10% of their maximal force when they did not expect to produce any change in the force, and when they expected to change their force in an unknown direction and at an unknown time. In the latter condition, the 10% constant-force phase was followed by a choice reaction time task, in which the participants rapidly changed their force to follow a moving target presented on a computer monitor. Both young and older adults displayed equivalent amount of Stage-1 ASA. This was driven by a 42% reduction in finger-force variability in young adults. In contrast, it was driven by a 38% increase in finger-force variability in older adults. We speculate that the reduction in finger force variability assists the young adults in rapid state changes via two mechanisms: (1) the finger forces occupy a restricted set of states that are optimal for quick state transitions, and (2) lower variability during steady state translates into lower self-motion during state transition. Self-motion is the covariation between finger forces that fails to change the total force. The older adults are unable to adopt this strategy, and the increase in finger-force variability arises from (1) the adoption of an alternative strategy of destabilizing the attractor associated with the current state to facilitate state transitions and (2) the inability to coordinate multiple finger forces. Finally, older adults displayed longer reaction times than young adults, but a clear relation between Stage-1 ASA and consequent behavioral benefit in terms of reduced reaction time remained elusive.

Abstract
Optimal feedback control theory suggests that control of movement is focused on movement dimensions that are important for the task's success. The current study tested the hypotheses that age effects would emerge in the control of only specific movement components and that these components would be linked to the task relevance. Fifty healthy volunteers, 25 young and 25 older adults, performed a 80s-tandem stance while their postural movements were recorded using a standard motion capture system. The postural movements were decomposed by a principal component analysis into one-dimensional movement components, PMk, whose control was assessed through two variables, Nk and σk, which characterized the tightness and the regularity of the neuro-muscular control, respectively. The older volunteers showed less tight and more irregular control in PM2 (N2: -9.2%, p = 0.007; σ2: +14.3.0%, p = 0.017) but tighter control in PM8 and PM9 (N8: +4.7%, p = 0.020; N9: +2.5%, p = 0.043; σ9: -8.8%, p = 0.025). These results suggest that aging effects alter the postural control system not as a whole, but emerge in specific, task relevant components. The findings of the current study thus support the hypothesis that the minimal intervention principle, as described in the context of optimal feedback control (OFC), may be relevant when assessing aging effects on postural control.

Abstract
The problem of motor redundancy has been one of the fundamental, albeit elusive, problems in motor control. Traditionally, it has been viewed as a computational problem for the brain, solved with either optimization methods or by introducing additional constraints to motor tasks. This review suggests that the problem was wrongly formulated, and that the abundant degrees of freedom are not to be eliminated but used to ensure dynamic stability of motor performance, which is vital given the unpredictable intrinsic states and external forces. The idea of synergies as mechanisms ensuring action stability is introduced based on the uncontrolled manifold hypothesis and the theory of control with spatial referent coordinates. The importance of controlled stability is illustrated with the phenomena of anticipatory synergy adjustments. This approach is productive for both basic and applied fields as illustrated, in particular, by changes in motor synergies with neurological disorder and exercise.
