Materials for Implantable Surface Electrode Arrays: Current Status and Future Directions

Surface electrode arrays are mainly fabricated from rigid or elastic materials, and precisely manipulated ductile metal films, which offer limited stretchability. However, the living tissues to which they are applied are nonlinear viscoelastic materials, which can undergo significant mechanical deformation in dynamic biological environments. Further, the same arrays and compositions are often repurposed for vastly different tissues rather than optimizing the materials and mechanical properties of the implant for the target application. By first characterizing the desired biological environment, and then designing a technology for a particular organ, surface electrode arrays may be more conformable, and offer better interfaces to tissues while causing less damage. Here, the various materials used in each component of a surface electrode array are first reviewed, and then electrically active implants in three specific biological systems, the nervous system, the muscular system, and skin, are described. Finally, the fabrication of next-generation surface arrays that overcome current limitations is discussed.

The Effects of Different Reference Methods on Decision-Making Implications of Auditory Brainstem Response

Hearing loss is a common disease affecting public health all around the world. In clinic, auditory brainstem response (ABR) has been widely used for the detection of hearing loss based on its convenience and accuracy. The different reference methods directly influence the quality of the ABR waveform which in turn affects the ABR-based diagnosis. Therefore, in this study, a reference electrode standardization technique (REST) was adopted to systematically investigate and evaluate the effect of different reference methods on the quality of ABR waveform in comparison with the conventional average reference (AR) and mean mastoid (MM) methods. In this study, ABR signals induced by click stimulus were acquired via an EEG electrode cap arrays, and those located on the six channels along the midline were compared systemically. The results showed that, when considering the different channels, the ABR in the Cz channel showed the best morphology. Then, the ABR waveforms acquired via the REST method possessed better morphologies with large amplitude ( $0.06\pm 0.02$  μV for wave I, $0.07\pm 0.02$  μV for wave III, and $0.21\pm 0.04$  μV for wave V) when compared with the traditional method. Summarily, we found that the REST and MM methods improved the quality of ABR on both amplitude and morphology under different stimulation rates and levels without changing the latencies of ABR when compared with the conventional AR method, suggesting that the REST and MM methods have the potential to help physicians with high accurate ABR-based clinical diagnosis. Moreover, this study might also provide a theoretic basis of reference methods on the acquisition of electroencephalogram over public health issues.

Correlation of blast-induced tympanic membrane perforation with peripheral cochlear synaptopathy

The auditory organs, including the tympanic membrane, cochlea, and central auditory pathway, are the most fragile components of the human body when exposed to blast overpressure. Tympanic membrane perforation (TMP) is the most frequent symptom in blast-exposed patients. However, the impact of TMP on the inner ear and central auditory system is not fully understood. We aimed to analyze the effect of blast-induced TMP on the auditory pathophysiological changes in mice after blast exposure. Mice aged 7 weeks were exposed to blast overpressure to induce TMP and allowed to survive for 2 months. All TMP cases had spontaneously healed by week 3 following the blast exposure. Compared to controls, blast-exposed mice exhibited a significant elevation in hearing thresholds and an apparent disruption of stereocilia in the outer hair cells, regardless of the occurrence or absence of TMP. The reduction in synapses in the inner hair cells, which is known as the most frequent pathology in blast-exposed cochleae, was significantly more severe in mice without TMP. However, a decrease in the number of excitatory central synapses labeled by VGLUT-1 in the cochlear nucleus was observed regardless of the absence or presence of TMP. Our findings suggest that blast-induced TMP mitigates peripheral cochlear synaptic disruption but leaves the central auditory synapses unaffected, indicating that central synaptic disruption is independent of TMP and peripheral cochlear synaptic disruption. Synaptic deterioration in the peripheral and central auditory systems can contribute to the promotion of blast-induced hearing impairment, including abnormal auditory perception.
