Low-Latency Spiking Neural Networks Using Pre-Charged Membrane Potential and Delayed Evaluation

High-performance deep spiking neural networks via at-most-two-spike exponential coding

Spiking neural networks (SNNs) provide necessary models and algorithms for neuromorphic computing. A popular way of building high-performance deep SNNs is to convert ANNs to SNNs, taking advantage of advanced and well-trained ANNs. Here we propose an ANN to SNN conversion methodology that uses a time-based coding scheme, named At-most-two-spike Exponential Coding (AEC), and a corresponding AEC spiking neuron model for ANN-SNN conversion. AEC neurons employ quantization-compensating spikes to improve coding accuracy and capacity, with each neuron generating up to two spikes within the time window. Two exponential decay functions with tunable parameters are proposed to represent the dynamic encoding thresholds, based on which pixel intensities are encoded into spike times and spike times are decoded into pixel intensities. The hyper-parameters of AEC neurons are fine-tuned based on the loss function of SNN-decoded values and ANN-activation values. In addition, we design two regularization terms for the number of spikes, providing the possibility to achieve the best trade-off between accuracy, latency and power consumption. The experimental results show that, compared to other similar methods, the proposed scheme not only obtains deep SNNs with higher accuracy, but also has more significant advantages in terms of energy efficiency and inference latency. Memcapacitor Crossbar Array with Charge Trap NAND Flash Structure for Neuromorphic Computing

The progress of artificial intelligence and the development of large-scale neural networks have significantly increased computational costs and energy consumption. To address these challenges, researchers are exploring low-power neural network implementation approaches and neuromorphic computing systems are being highlighted as potential candidates. Specifically, the development of high-density and reliable synaptic devices, which are the key elements of neuromorphic systems, is of particular interest. In this study, an 8 × 16 memcapacitor crossbar array that combines the technological maturity of flash cells with the advantages of NAND flash array structure is presented. The analog properties of the array with high reliability are experimentally demonstrated, and vector-matrix multiplication with extremely low error is successfully performed. Additionally, with the capability of weight fine-tuning characteristics, a spiking neural network for CIFAR-10 classification via off-chip learning at the wafer level is implemented. These experimental results demonstrate a high level of accuracy of 92.11%, with less than a 1.13% difference compared to software-based neural networks (93.24%).

Quantization Framework for Fast Spiking Neural Networks

Compared with artificial neural networks (ANNs), spiking neural networks (SNNs) offer additional temporal dynamics with the compromise of lower information transmission rates through the use of spikes. When using an ANN-to-SNN conversion technique there is a direct link between the activation bit precision of the artificial neurons and the time required by the spiking neurons to represent the same bit precision. This implicit link suggests that techniques used to reduce the activation bit precision of ANNs, such as quantization, can help shorten the inference latency of SNNs. However, carrying ANN quantization knowledge over to SNNs is not straightforward, as there are many fundamental differences between them. Here we propose a quantization framework for fast SNNs (QFFS) to overcome these difficulties, providing a method to build SNNs with enhanced latency and reduced loss of accuracy relative to the baseline ANN model. In this framework, we promote the compatibility of ANN information quantization techniques with SNNs, and suppress "occasional noise" to minimize accuracy loss. The resulting SNNs overcome the accuracy degeneration observed previously in SNNs with a limited number of time steps and achieve an accuracy of 70.18% on ImageNet within 8 time steps. This is the first demonstration that SNNs built by ANN-to-SNN conversion can achieve a similar latency to SNNs built by direct training.
