Abstract
Postural stabilization is essential to effectively interact with our environment. Humans preemptively adjust their posture to counteract impending disturbances, such as those encountered during interactions with moving objects, a phenomenon known as anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs). APAs are thought to be influenced by predictive models that incorporate object motion via retinal motion and extraretinal signals. Building on our previous work that examined APAs in relation to the perceived momentum of moving objects, here we explored the impact of object motion within different visual field sectors on the human capacity to anticipate motion and prepare APAs for contact between virtual moving objects and the limb. Participants interacted with objects moving toward them under different gaze conditions. In one condition, participants fixated on either a central point (central fixation) or left-right of the moving object (peripheral fixation), whereas in another, they followed the moving object with smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEMs). We found that APAs had the smallest magnitude in the central fixation condition and that no notable differences in APAs were apparent between the SPEM and peripheral fixation conditions. This suggests that the visual system can accurately perceive motion of objects in peripheral vision for posture stabilization. Using Bayesian model averaging, we also evaluated the contribution of different gaze variables, such as eye velocity and gain (ratio of eye and object velocity) and showed that both eye velocity and gain signals were significant predictors of APAs. Taken together, our study underscores the roles of oculomotor signals in the modulation of APAs.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We show that the human visuomotor system can detect motion in peripheral vision and make anticipatory adjustments to posture before contact with moving objects, just as effectively as when the eye movement system tracks those objects with smooth pursuit eye movements. These findings pave the way for research into how age-induced changes in spatial vision, eye movements, and motion perception could affect the control of limb movements and postural stability during motion-mediated interactions with objects.

Abstract
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the internal segment of the globus pallidus (GPi) can markedly reduce muscle rigidity in people with Parkinson's disease (PD); however, the mechanisms mediating this effect are poorly understood. Computational modeling of DBS provides a method to estimate the relative contributions of neural pathway activations to changes in outcomes. In this study, we generated subject-specific biophysical models of GPi DBS (derived from individual 7-T MRI), including pallidal efferent, putamenal efferent, and internal capsule pathways, to investigate how activation of neural pathways contributed to changes in forearm rigidity in PD. Ten individuals (17 arms) were tested off medication under four conditions: off stimulation, on clinically optimized stimulation, and on stimulation specifically targeting the dorsal GPi or ventral GPi. Quantitative measures of forearm rigidity, with and without a contralateral activation maneuver, were obtained with a robotic manipulandum. Clinically optimized GPi DBS settings significantly reduced forearm rigidity (P < 0.001), which aligned with GPi efferent fiber activation. The model demonstrated that GPi efferent axons could be activated at any location along the GPi dorsal-ventral axis. These results provide evidence that rigidity reduction produced by GPi DBS is mediated by preferential activation of GPi efferents to the thalamus, likely leading to a reduction in excitability of the muscle stretch reflex via overdriving pallidofugal output.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Subject-specific computational models of pallidal deep brain stimulation, in conjunction with quantitative measures of forearm rigidity, were used to examine the neural pathways mediating stimulation-induced changes in rigidity in people with Parkinson's disease. The model uniquely included internal, efferent and adjacent pathways of the basal ganglia. The results demonstrate that reductions in rigidity evoked by deep brain stimulation were principally mediated by the activation of globus pallidus internus efferent pathways.

Abstract
Previous evidence of increased difference of muscular strength between the dominant and non-dominant legs in older adults suggests the possibility of dissimilar balance control between the legs (between-leg asymmetry) associated with aging. In the current investigation, we evaluated between-leg asymmetries in older adults when performing quiet and dynamic balance tasks. Fifty-two physically active and healthy older adults within the age range of 60 to 80 years were recruited. Participants performed balance tasks in unipedal stance, including quiet standing and cyclic sway (rhythmic oscillation) of the non-supporting leg in the anteroposterior or mediolateral directions, producing foot displacements with amplitudes of 20 cm paced in 1 Hz through a metronome. Body balance was evaluated through trunk accelerometry, by using the sensors embedded into a smartphone fixed at the height of the 10th-12th thoracic spines. Analysis revealed lack of significant differences in balance control between the legs either when comparing the right versus left or the preferred versus non-preferred legs, regardless of whether they were performing quiet stance or dynamic tasks. Further examination of the data showed high between-leg correlation coefficients (rs range: 0.71-0.84) across all tasks. Then, our results indicated symmetric and associated between-leg balance control in the examined older adults.

Abstract
Cortical myoclonus is produced by abnormal neuronal discharges within the sensorimotor cortex, as demonstrated by electrophysiology. Our hypothesis is that the loss of cerebellar inhibitory control over the motor cortex, via cerebello-thalamo-cortical connections, could induce the increased sensorimotor cortical excitability that eventually causes cortical myoclonus. To explore this hypothesis, in the present study we applied anodal transcranial direct current stimulation over the cerebellum of patients affected by cortical myoclonus and healthy controls and assessed its effect on sensorimotor cortex excitability. We expected that anodal cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation would increase the inhibitory cerebellar drive to the motor cortex and therefore reduce the sensorimotor cortex hyperexcitability observed in cortical myoclonus. Ten patients affected by cortical myoclonus of various aetiology and 10 aged-matched healthy control subjects were included in the study. All participants underwent somatosensory evoked potentials, long-latency reflexes and short-interval intracortical inhibition recording at baseline and immediately after 20 min session of cerebellar anodal transcranial direct current stimulation. In patients, myoclonus was recorded by the means of surface EMG before and after the cerebellar stimulation. Anodal cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation did not change the above variables in healthy controls, while it significantly increased the amplitude of somatosensory evoked potential cortical components, long-latency reflexes and decreased short-interval intracortical inhibition in patients; alongside, a trend towards worsening of the myoclonus after the cerebellar stimulation was observed. Interestingly, when dividing patients in those with and without giant somatosensory evoked potentials, the increment of the somatosensory evoked potential cortical components was observed mainly in those with giant potentials. Our data showed that anodal cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation facilitates-and does not inhibit-sensorimotor cortex excitability in cortical myoclonus syndromes. This paradoxical response might be due to an abnormal homeostatic plasticity within the sensorimotor cortex, driven by dysfunctional cerebello-thalamo-cortical input to the motor cortex. We suggest that the cerebellum is implicated in the pathophysiology of cortical myoclonus and that these results could open the way to new forms of treatment or treatment targets.

Abstract
For whole-body sway patterns, a compound motor response following an external stimulus may comprise reflexes, postural adjustments (anticipatory or compensatory), and voluntary muscular activity. Responses to equilibrium destabilization may depend on both motor set and a subject`s expectation of the disturbing stimulus. To disentangle these influences on lower limb responses, we studied a model in which subjects (n = 14) were suspended in the air, without foot support, and performed a fast unilateral wrist extension (WE) in response to a passive knee flexion (KF) delivered by a robot. To characterize the responses, electromyographic activity of rectus femoris and reactive leg torque was obtained bilaterally in a series of trials, with or without the requirement of WE (motor set), and/or beforehand information about the upcoming velocity of KF (subject`s expectation). Some fast-velocity trials resulted in StartReact responses, which were used to subclassify leg responses. When subjects were uninformed about the upcoming KF, large rectus femoris responses concurred with a postural reaction in conditions without motor task, and with both postural reaction and postural adjustment when WE was required. WE in response to a low-volume acoustic signal elicited no postural adjustments. When subjects were informed about KF velocity and had to perform WE, large rectus femoris responses corresponded to anticipatory postural adjustment rather than postural reaction. In conclusion, when subjects are suspended in the air and have to respond with WE, the prepared motor set includes anticipatory postural adjustments if KF velocity is known, and additional postural reactions if KF velocity is unknown.

Abstract
Various functional modulations of the stretch reflex help to stabilize actions, but the computational mechanism behind its context-dependent tuning remains unclear. While many studies have demonstrated that motor contexts associated with the task goal cause functional modulation of the stretch reflex of upper limbs, it is not well understood how visual contexts independent of the task requirements affect the stretch reflex. To explore this issue, we conducted two experiments testing 20 healthy human participants (age range 20-45, average 31.3 ± 9.0), in which visual contexts were manipulated in a visually guided reaching task. During wrist flexion movements toward a visual target, a mechanical load was applied to the wrist joint to evoke stretch reflex of wrist flexor muscle (flexor carpi radialis). The first experiment (n = 10) examined the effect of altering the visuomotor transformation on the stretch reflex that was evaluated with surface electromyogram. We found that the amplitude of the stretch reflex decreased (p = 0.024) when a rotational transformation of 90° was introduced between the hand movement and the visual cursor, whereas the amplitude did not significantly change (p = 0.26) when the rotational transformation was accompanied by a head rotation so that the configuration of visual feedback was maintained in visual coordinates. The results suggest that the stretch reflex was regulated depending on whether the visuomotor mapping had already been acquired or not. In the second experiment (n = 10), we examined how uncertainty in the visual target or hand cursor affects the stretch reflex by removing these visual stimuli. We found that the reflex amplitude was reduced by the disappearance of the hand cursor (p = 0.039), but was not affected by removal of the visual target (p = 0.27), suggesting that the visual state of the body and target contribute differently to the reflex tuning. These findings support the idea that visual updating of the body state is crucial for regulation of quick motor control driven by proprioceptive signals.

Abstract
Spasticity might affect gait in children with cerebral palsy. Quantifying its occurrence during locomotion is challenging. One approach is to determine kinematic stretch reflex thresholds, usually on the velocity, during passive assessment and to search for their exceedance during gait. These thresholds are determined through EMG-Onset detection algorithms, which are variable in performance and sensitive to noisy data, and can therefore lack consistency. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of determining the velocity stretch reflex threshold from maximal musculotendon acceleration. Eighteen children with CP were recruited and underwent clinical gait analysis and a full instrumented assessment of their soleus, gastrocnemius lateralis, semitendinosus, and rectus femoris spasticity, with EMG, kinematics, and applied forces being measured simultaneously. Using a subject-scaled musculoskeletal model, the acceleration-based stretch reflex velocity thresholds were determined and compared to those based on EMG-Onset determination. Their consistencies according to physiological criteria, i.e., if the timing of the threshold was between the beginning of the stretch and the spastic catch, were evaluated. Finally, two parameters designed to evaluate the occurrence of spasticity during gait, i.e., the proportion of the gait trial time with a gait velocity above the velocity threshold and the number of times the threshold was exceeded, were compared. The proposed method produces velocity stretch reflex thresholds close to the EMG-based ones. For all muscles, no statistical difference was found between the two parameters designed to evaluate the occurrence of spasticity during gait. Contrarily to the EMG-based methods, the proposed method always provides physiologically consistent values, with median electromechanical delays of between 50 and 130 ms. For all subjects, the semitendinosus velocity during gait usually exceeded its stretch reflex threshold, while it was less frequent for the three other muscles. We conclude that a velocity stretch reflex threshold, based on musculotendon acceleration, is a reliable substitute for EMG-based ones.

Abstract
When humans reach to visual targets, extremely rapid (∼90 ms) target-directed responses can be observed in task-relevant proximal muscles. Such express visuomotor responses are inflexibly locked in time and space to the target and have been proposed to reflect rapid visuomotor transformations conveyed subcortically via the tecto-reticulo-spinal pathway. Previously, we showed that express visuomotor responses are sensitive to explicit cue-driven information about the target, suggesting that the express pathway can be modulated by cortical signals affording contextual prestimulus expectations. Here, we show that the express visuomotor system incorporates information about the physical hand-to-target distance and contextual rules during visuospatial tasks requiring different movement amplitudes. In one experiment, we recorded the activity from two shoulder muscles as 14 participants (6 females) reached toward targets that appeared at different distances from the reaching hand. Increasing the reaching distance facilitated the generation of frequent and large express visuomotor responses. This suggests that both the direction and amplitude of veridical hand-to-target reaches are encoded along the putative subcortical express pathway. In a second experiment, we modulated the movement amplitude by asking 12 participants (4 females) to deliberately undershoot, overshoot, or stop (control) at the target. The overshoot and undershoot tasks impaired the generation of large and frequent express visuomotor responses, consistent with the inability of the express pathway to generate responses directed toward nonveridical targets as in the anti-reach task. Our findings appear to reflect strategic, cortically driven modulation of the express visuomotor circuit to facilitate rapid and effective response initiation during target-directed actions.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Express (∼90 ms) arm muscle responses that are consistently tuned toward the location of visual stimuli suggest a subcortical contribution to target-directed visuomotor behavior in humans, potentially via the tecto-reticulo-spinal pathway. Here, we show that express muscle responses are modulated appropriately to reach targets at different distances, but generally suppressed when the task required nonveridical responses to overshoot/undershoot the real target. This suggests that the tecto-reticulo-spinal pathway can be exploited strategically by the cerebral cortex to facilitate rapid initiation of effective responses during a visuospatial task.

Abstract
Although rigidity is a cardinal motor sign in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), the instrumental measurement of this clinical phenomenon is largely lacking, and its pathophysiological underpinning remains still unclear. Further advances in the field would require innovative methodological approaches able to measure parkinsonian rigidity objectively, discriminate the different biomechanical sources of muscle tone (neural or visco-elastic components), and finally clarify the contribution to 'objective rigidity' exerted by neurophysiological responses, which have previously been associated with this clinical sign (i.e. the long-latency stretch-induced reflex). Twenty patients with PD (67.3 ± 6.9 years) and 25 age- and sex-matched controls (66.9 ± 7.4 years) were recruited. Rigidity was measured clinically and through a robotic device. Participants underwent robot-assisted wrist extensions at seven different angular velocities randomly applied, when ON therapy. For each value of angular velocity, several biomechanical (i.e. elastic, viscous and neural components) and neurophysiological measures (i.e. short and long-latency reflex and shortening reaction) were synchronously assessed and correlated with the clinical score of rigidity (i.e. Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale-part III, subitems for the upper limb). The biomechanical investigation allowed us to measure 'objective rigidity' in PD and estimate the neuronal source of this phenomenon. In patients, 'objective rigidity' progressively increased along with the rise of angular velocities during robot-assisted wrist extensions. The neurophysiological examination disclosed increased long-latency reflexes, but not short-latency reflexes nor shortening reaction, in PD compared with control subjects. Long-latency reflexes progressively increased according to angular velocities only in patients with PD. Lastly, specific biomechanical and neurophysiological abnormalities correlated with the clinical score of rigidity. 'Objective rigidity' in PD correlates with velocity-dependent abnormal neuronal activity. The observations overall (i.e. the velocity-dependent feature of biomechanical and neurophysiological measures of objective rigidity) would point to a putative subcortical network responsible for 'objective rigidity' in PD, which requires further investigation.

Abstract
Sensorimotor training and strength training can improve balance control. Currently, little is known about how repeated balance perturbation training affects balance performance and its neural mechanisms. This study investigated corticospinal adaptation assessed by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and Hoffman-reflex (H-reflex) measurements during balance perturbation induced by perturbation training. Fourteen subjects completed three perturbation sessions (PS1, PS2, and PS3). The perturbation system operated at 0.25 m/s, accelerating at 2.5 m/s2 over a 0.3 m displacement in anterior and posterior directions. Subjects were trained by over 200 perturbations in PS2. In PS1 and PS3, TMS and electrical stimulation elicited motor evoked potentials (MEP) and H-reflexes in the right leg soleus muscle, at standing rest and two time points (40 ms and 140 ms) after perturbation. Body sway was assessed using the displacement and velocity of the center of pressure (COP), which showed a decrease in PS3. No significant changes were observed in MEP or H-reflex between sessions. Nevertheless, Δ MEP at 40 ms demonstrated a positive correlation with Δ COP, while Δ H-reflex at 40 ms demonstrated a negative correlation with Δ COP. Balance perturbation training led to less body sway and a potential increase in spinal-level involvement, indicating that movement automaticity may be suggested after perturbation training.

Abstract
Humans often move in the presence of mechanical disturbances that can vary in direction and amplitude throughout movement. These disturbances can jeopardize the outcomes of our actions, such as when drinking from a glass of water on a turbulent flight or carrying a cup of coffee while walking on a busy sidewalk. Here, we examine control strategies that allow the nervous system to maintain performance when reaching in the presence of mechanical disturbances that vary randomly throughout movement. Healthy participants altered their control strategies to make movements more robust against disturbances. The change in control was associated with faster reaching movements and increased responses to proprioceptive and visual feedback that were tuned to the variability of the disturbances. Our findings highlight that the nervous system exploits a continuum of control strategies to increase its responsiveness to sensory feedback when reaching in the presence of increasingly variable physical disturbances.

Abstract
An important window into sensorimotor function is how humans interact and stop moving projectiles, such as stopping a door from closing shut or catching a ball. Previous studies have suggested that humans time the initiation and modulate the amplitude of their muscle activity based on the momentum of the approaching object. However, real-world experiments are constrained by laws of mechanics, which cannot be manipulated experimentally to probe the mechanisms of sensorimotor control and learning. An augmented-reality variant of such tasks allows for experimental manipulation of the relationship between motion and force to obtain novel insights into how the nervous system prepares motor responses to interact with moving stimuli. Existing paradigms for studying interactions with moving projectiles use massless objects and are primarily focused on quantifying gaze and hand kinematics. Here, we developed a novel collision paradigm using a robotic manipulandum where participants mechanically stopped a virtual object moving in the horizontal plane. On each block of trials, we varied the virtual object's momentum by increasing either its velocity or mass. Participants stopped the object by applying a force impulse that matched the object momentum. We observed that hand force increased as a function of object momentum linked to changes in virtual mass or velocity, similar to results from studies involving catching free-falling objects. In addition, increasing object velocity resulted in later onset of hand force relative to the impending time-to-contact. These findings show that the present paradigm can be used to determine how humans process projectile motion for hand motor control.

Abstract
Voluntary movements are prepared before they are executed. Preparatory activity has been observed across the CNS and recently documented in first-order neurons of the human PNS (i.e., in muscle spindles). Changes seen in sensory organs suggest that independent modulation of stretch reflex gains may represent an important component of movement preparation. The aim of the current study was to further investigate the preparatory modulation of short-latency stretch reflex responses (SLRs) and long-latency stretch reflex responses (LLRs) of the dominant upper limb of human subjects. Specifically, we investigated how different target parameters (target distance and direction) affect the preparatory tuning of stretch reflex gains in the context of goal-directed reaching, and whether any such tuning depends on preparation duration and the direction of background loads. We found that target distance produced only small variations in reflex gains. In contrast, both SLR and LLR gains were strongly modulated as a function of target direction, in a manner that facilitated the upcoming voluntary movement. This goal-directed tuning of SLR and LLR gains was present or enhanced when the preparatory delay was sufficiently long (>250 ms) and the homonymous muscle was unloaded [i.e., when a background load was first applied in the direction of homonymous muscle action (assistive loading)]. The results extend further support for a relatively slow-evolving process in reach preparation that functions to modulate reflexive muscle stiffness, likely via the independent control of fusimotor neurons. Such control can augment voluntary goal-directed movement and is triggered or enhanced when the homonymous muscle is unloaded.

Abstract
Purpose Long-term sports training, such as skill and endurance training, leads to specific neuroplasticity. However, it remains unclear if muscle stretch-induced proprioceptive feedback influences corticospinal facilitation/inhibition differently between skill- and endurance-trained athletes. This study investigated modulation of corticospinal excitability following rapid ankle dorsiflexion between well-trained skill and endurance athletes. Methods Ten skill- and ten endurance-trained athletes participated in the study. Corticospinal excitability was tested by single- and paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulations (TMS) at three different latencies following passive rapid ankle dorsiflexion. Motor evoked potential (MEP), short-latency intracortical inhibition (SICI), intracortical facilitation (ICF), and long-latency intracortical inhibition (LICI) were recorded by surface electromyography from the soleus muscle. Results Compared to immediately before ankle dorsiflexion (Onset), TMS induced significantly greater MEPs during the supraspinal reaction period (~ 120 ms after short-latency reflex, SLR) in the skill group only (from 1.7 ± 1.0 to 2.7 ± 1.8%M-max, P = 0.005) despite both conditions being passive. ICF was significantly greater over all latencies in skill than endurance athletes (F(3, 45) = 4.64, P = 0.007), although no between-group differences for stimulations at specific latencies (e.g., at SLR) were observed. Conclusion The skill group showed higher corticospinal excitability during the supraspinal reaction phase, which may indicate a “priming” of corticospinal excitability following rapid ankle dorsiflexion for a supraspinal reaction post-stretch, which appears absent in endurance-trained athletes.

Abstract
Motor responses in one leg to sensory stimulation of the contralateral leg have been named "crossed reflexes" and are extensively investigated in cats and humans. Despite this effort, a circuit-level understanding of the crossed reflexes has remained missing. In mice, advances in molecular genetics enabled insights into the "commissural spinal circuitry" that ensures coordinated leg movements during locomotion. Despite some common features between the commissural spinal circuitry and the circuit for the crossed reflexes, the degree to which they overlap has remained obscure. Here, we describe excitatory crossed reflex responses elicited by electrically stimulating the common peroneal nerve that mainly innervates ankle flexor muscles and the skin on anterolateral aspect of the hind leg. Stimulation of the peroneal nerve with low current intensity evoked low-amplitude motor responses in the contralateral flexor and extensor muscles. At higher current strengths, stimulation of the same nerve evoked stronger and more synchronous responses in the same contralateral muscles. In addition to the excitatory crossed reflex pathway indicated by muscle activation, we demonstrate the presence of an inhibitory crossed reflex pathway, which was modulated when the motor pools were active during walking. The results are compared with the crossed reflex responses initiated by stimulating proprioceptors from extensor muscles and cutaneous afferents from the posterior part of the leg. We anticipate that these findings will be essential for future research combining the in vivo experiments presented here with mouse genetics to understand crossed reflex pathways at the network level in vivo.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Insights into the mechanisms of crossed reflexes are essential for understanding coordinated leg movements that maintain stable locomotion. Advances in mouse genetics allow for the selective manipulation of spinal interneurons and provide opportunities to understand crossed reflexes. Crossed reflexes in mice, however, are poorly described. Here, we describe crossed reflex responses in mice initiated by stimulation of the common peroneal nerve, which serves as a starting point for investigating crossed reflexes at the cellular level.

Abstract
Objective The mechanisms contributing to the pathogenesis of tremor and/or dysmetria in multiple sclerosis (MS) are poorly understood. Abnormal oscillations within the olivo-cerebello-thalamo-cortical networks are believed to play an important part in tremor aetiology, but could also contribute to intention dysmetria due to disruptions in motor timing. Conversely, delayed central motor conduction times are a common feature of ataxias, but could also contribute to the expression of dysmetria in MS. This study examined the roles of central conduction delays in the manifestation of tremor and/or dysmetria in MS. Methods Twenty-three individuals with MS participated: 8 with no movement disorder, 6 with tremor, 4 with pure dysmetria and 5 with both tremor and dysmetria. Median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the motor cortex and cervical spine, stretch reflexes were used assess sensory and motor conduction times. Results Central, but not peripheral, sensory conductions time were significantly delayed in participants with dysmetria, regardless of the presence of tremor. Similarly, the TMS evoked muscles responses and the long-latency component of stretch reflexes were significantly delayed in those with dysmetria, but not pure tremor. Conclusion Dysmetria in MS is associated with delays in central conduction of sensory or motor pathways, or both, likely leading to disruption of muscle activation timing and terminal oscillations that contribute to dysmetria. Significance The presence of dysmetria in MS is associated with decreased conduction velocities in central sensory and/or motor pathways likely reflects greater demyelination of these axons compared to those with no movement disorder or pure tremor.

Abstract
Sensory feedback is pivotal for a proficient dexterity of the hand. By modulating the grip force in function of the quick and not completely predictable change of the load force, grabbed objects are prevented to slip from the hand. Slippage control is an enabling achievement to all manipulation abilities. However, in hand prosthetics, the performance of even the most innovative research solutions proposed so far to control slippage remain distant from the human physiology. Indeed, slippage control involves parallel and compensatory activation of multiple mechanoceptors, spinal and supraspinal reflexes, and higher-order voluntary behavioral adjustments. In this work, we reviewed the literature on physiological correlates of slippage to propose a three-phases model for the slip sensation and reaction. Furthermore, we discuss the main strategies employed so far in the research studies that tried to restore slippage control in amputees. In the light of the proposed three-phase slippage model and from the weaknesses of already implemented solutions, we proposed several physiology-inspired solutions for slippage control to be implemented in the future hand prostheses. Understanding the physiological basis of slip detection and perception and implementing them in novel hand feedback system would make prosthesis manipulation more efficient and would boost its perceived naturalness, fostering the sense of agency for the hand movements.

Abstract
Knowledge on the organization of motor function in the reticulospinal tract (RST) is limited by the lack of methods for measuring RST function in humans. Behavioral studies suggest the involvement of the RST in long latency responses (LLRs). LLRs, elicited by precisely controlled perturbations, can therefore act as a viable paradigm to measure motor-related RST activity using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). Here we present StretchfMRI, a novel technique developed to study RST function associated with LLRs. StretchfMRI combines robotic perturbations with electromyography and fMRI to simultaneously quantify muscular and neural activity during stretch-evoked LLRs without loss of reliability. Using StretchfMRI, we established the muscle-specific organization of LLR activity in the brainstem. The observed organization is partially consistent with animal models, with activity primarily in the ipsilateral medulla for flexors and in the contralateral pons for extensors, but also includes other areas, such as the midbrain and bilateral pontomedullary contributions.

Abstract
The central nervous system uses feedback processes that occur at multiple time scales to control interactions with the environment. The long-latency response (LLR) is the fastest process that directly involves cortical areas, with a motoneuron response measurable 50 ms following an imposed limb displacement. Several behavioral factors concerning perturbation mechanics and the active role of muscles prior or during the perturbation can modulate the long-latency response amplitude (LLRa) in the upper limbs, but the interactions among many of these factors had not been systematically studied before. We conducted a behavioral study on thirteen healthy individuals to determine the effect and interaction of four behavioral factors – background muscle torque, perturbation direction, perturbation velocity, and task instruction – on the LLRa evoked from the flexor carpi radialis (FCR) and extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) muscles after velocity-controlled wrist displacements. The effects of the four factors were quantified using both a 0D statistical analysis on the average perturbation-evoked EMG signal in the period corresponding to an LLR, and using a timeseries analysis of EMG signals. All factors significantly modulated LLRa, and their combination nonlinearly contributed to modulating the LLRa. Specifically, all the three-way interaction terms that could be computed without including the interaction between instruction and velocity significantly modulated the LLR. Analysis of the three-way interaction terms of the 0D model indicated that for the ECU muscle, the LLRa evoked when subjects are asked to maintain their muscle activation in response to the perturbations was greater than the one observed when subjects yielded to the perturbations (p < 0.001), but this effect was not measured for muscles undergoing shortening or in absence of background muscle activation. Moreover, higher perturbation velocity increased the LLRa evoked from the stretched muscle in presence of a background torque (p < 0.001), but no effects of velocity were measured in absence of background torque. Also, our analysis identified significant modulations of LLRa in muscles shortened by the perturbation, including an interaction between torque and velocity, and an effect of both torque and velocity. The time-series analysis indicated the significance of additional transient effects in the LLR region for muscles undergoing shortening.

Abstract
Existing non-invasive stimulation protocols can generate plasticity in the motor cortex and its corticospinal projections; techniques for inducing plasticity in subcortical circuits and alternative descending pathways such as the reticulospinal tract (RST) are less well developed. One possible approach developed by this laboratory pairs electrical muscle stimulation with auditory clicks, using a wearable device to deliver stimuli during normal daily activities. In this study, we applied a variety of electrophysiological assessments to male and female healthy human volunteers during a morning and evening laboratory visit. In the intervening time (∼6 h), subjects wore the stimulation device, receiving three different protocols, in which clicks and stimulation of the biceps muscle were paired at either low or high rate, or delivered at random. Paired stimulation: (1) increased the extent of reaction time shortening by a loud sound (the StartReact effect); (2) decreased the suppression of responses to transcranial magnetic brain stimulation (TMS) following a loud sound; (3) enhanced muscle responses elicited by a TMS coil oriented to induce anterior-posterior (AP) current, but not posterior-anterior (PA) current, in the brain. These measurements have all been suggested to be sensitive to subcortical, possibly reticulospinal, activity. Changes were similar for either of the two paired stimulus rates tested, but absent after unpaired (control) stimulation. Taken together, these results suggest that pairing clicks and muscle stimulation for long periods does indeed induce plasticity in subcortical systems such as the RST.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Subcortical systems such as the reticulospinal tract (RST) are important motor pathways, which can make a significant contribution to functional recovery after cortical damage such as stroke. Here, we measure changes produced after a novel non-invasive stimulation protocol, which uses a wearable device to stimulate for extended periods. We observed changes in electrophysiological measurements consistent with the induction of subcortical plasticity. This protocol may prove an important tool for enhancing motor rehabilitation, in situations where insufficient cortical tissue survives to be a plausible substrate for recovery of function.

Humans display skilful control over the objects they manipulate, so much so that biomimetic systems have yet to emulate this remarkable behaviour. Two key control processes are assumed to facilitate such dexterity: predictive cognitive-motor processes that guide manipulation procedures by anticipating action outcomes; and reactive sensorimotor processes that provide important error-based information for movement adaptation. Notwithstanding increased interdisciplinary research interest in object manipulation behaviour, the complexity of the perceptual-sensorimotor-cognitive processes involved and the theoretical divide regarding the fundamentality of control mean that the essential mechanisms underlying manipulative action remain undetermined. In this paper, following a detailed discussion of the theoretical and empirical bases for understanding human dexterous movement, we emphasise the role of tactile-related sensory events in secure object handling, and consider the contribution of certain biophysical and biomechanical phenomena. We aim to provide an integrated account of the current state-of-art in skilled human-object interaction that bridges the literature in neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and biophysics. We also propose novel directions for future research exploration in this area.

Abstract
Movement is altered by pain, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Assessing corrective muscle responses following mechanical perturbations can help clarify these underlying mechanisms, as these responses involve spinal (short-latency response, 20-50 ms), transcortical (long-latency response, 50-100 ms), and cortical (early voluntary response, 100-150 ms) mechanisms. Pairing mechanical (proprioceptive) perturbations with different conditions of visual feedback can also offer insight into how pain impacts on sensorimotor integration. The general aim of this study was to examine the impact of experimental tonic pain on corrective muscle responses evoked by mechanical and/or visual perturbations in healthy adults. Two sessions (Pain (induced with capsaicin) and No pain) were performed using a robotic exoskeleton combined with a 2D virtual environment. Participants were instructed to maintain their index in a target despite the application of perturbations under four conditions of sensory feedback: (1) proprioceptive only, (2) visuoproprioceptive congruent, (3) visuoproprioceptive incongruent, and (4) visual only. Perturbations were induced in either flexion or extension, with an amplitude of 2 or 3 Nm. Surface electromyography was recorded from Biceps and Triceps muscles. Results demonstrated no significant effect of the type of sensory feedback on corrective muscle responses, no matter whether pain was present or not. When looking at the effect of pain on corrective responses across muscles, a significant interaction was found, but for the early voluntary responses only. These results suggest that the effect of cutaneous tonic pain on motor control arises mainly at the cortical (rather than spinal) level and that proprioception dominates vision for responses to perturbations, even in the presence of pain. The observation of a muscle-specific modulation using a cutaneous pain model highlights the fact that the impacts of pain on the motor system are not only driven by the need to unload structures from which the nociceptive signal is arising.

Abstract
Both linear and nonlinear electromyographic (EMG) connectivity has been reported during the expression of stretch reflexes, though it is not clear whether they are generated by the same neural pathways. To answer this question, we aim to distinguish linear and nonlinear connectivity, as well as their delays in muscle responses, resulting from continuous elbow joint perturbations. We recorded EMG from Biceps Brachii muscle when eight able-bodied participants were performing a steady elbow flexion torque while simultaneously receiving a continuous position perturbation. Using a recently developed phase coupling metric, we estimated linear and nonlinear connectivity as well as their associated delays between Biceps EMG responses and perturbations. We found that the time delay for linear connectivity (24.5 ± 5.4 ms) is in the range of short-latency stretch reflex period (< 35 ms), while that for nonlinear connectivity (53.8 ± 3.2 ms) is in the range of long-latency stretch reflex period (40-70 ms). These results suggest that the estimated linear connectivity between EMG and perturbations is very likely generated by the mono-synaptic spinal stretch reflex loop, while the nonlinear connectivity may be associated with multi-synaptic supraspinal stretch reflex loops. As such, this study provides new evidence of the nature of neural connectivity related to the stretch reflex.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To define static, dynamic, and cognitive fit and their interactions as they pertain to exosystems and to document open research needs in using these fit characteristics to inform exosystem design. BACKGROUND Initial exosystem sizing and fit evaluations are currently based on scalar anthropometric dimensions and subjective assessments. As fit depends on ongoing interactions related to task setting and user, attempts to tailor equipment have limitations when optimizing for this limited fit definition. METHOD A targeted literature review was conducted to inform a conceptual framework defining three characteristics of exosystem fit: static, dynamic, and cognitive. Details are provided on the importance of differentiating fit characteristics for developing exosystems. RESULTS Static fit considers alignment between human and equipment and requires understanding anthropometric characteristics of target users and geometric equipment features. Dynamic fit assesses how the human and equipment move and interact with each other, with a focus on the relative alignment between the two systems. Cognitive fit considers the stages of human-information processing, including somatosensation, executive function, and motor selection. Human cognitive capabilities should remain available to process task- and stimulus-related information in the presence of an exosystem. Dynamic and cognitive fit are operationalized in a task-specific manner, while static fit can be considered for predefined postures. CONCLUSION A deeper understanding of how an exosystem fits an individual is needed to ensure good human-system performance. Development of methods for evaluating different fit characteristics is necessary. APPLICATION Methods are presented to inform exosystem evaluation across physical and cognitive characteristics.

Abstract
Human movement is generated by a dynamic interplay between the nervous system, the biomechanical structures, and the environment. To investigate this interaction, we propose a neuro-musculoskeletal model of human goal-directed arm movements. Using this model, we simulated static perturbations of the inertia and damping properties of the arm, as well as dynamic torque perturbations for one-degree-of freedom movements around the elbow joint. The controller consists of a feed-forward motor command and feedback based on muscle fiber length and contraction velocity representing short-latency (25 ms) or long-latency (50 ms) stretch reflexes as the first neuronal responses elicited by an external perturbation. To determine the open-loop control signal, we parameterized the control signal resulting in a piecewise constant stimulation over time for each muscle. Interestingly, such an intermittent open-loop signal results in a smooth movement that is close to experimental observations. So, our model can generate the unperturbed point-to-point movement solely by the feed-forward command. The feedback only contributed to the stimulation in perturbed movements. We found that the relative contribution of this feedback is small compared to the feed-forward control and that the characteristics of the musculoskeletal system create an immediate and beneficial reaction to the investigated perturbations. The novelty of these findings is (1) the reproduction of static as well as dynamic perturbation experiments in one neuro-musculoskeletal model with only one set of basic parameters. This allows to investigate the model's neuro-muscular response to the perturbations that-at least to some degree-represent stereotypical interactions with the environment; (2) the demonstration that in feed-forward driven movements the muscle characteristics generate a mechanical response with zero-time delay which helps to compensate for the perturbations; (3) that this model provides enough biomechanical detail to allow for the prediction of internal forces, including joint loads and muscle-bone contact forces which are relevant in ergonomics and for the development of assistive devices but cannot be observed in experiments.

Limb displacement causes muscle stretch; the corrective response has multiple activity bursts, which are suggested to originate from different parts of the neuraxis. The earliest response is so fast, it can only be produced by spinal circuits; this is followed by slower components thought to arise from primary motor cortex (M1) and other supraspinal areas. Limb displacement causes muscle stretch; the corrective response has multiple activity bursts, which are suggested to originate from different parts of the neuraxis. The earliest response is so fast, it can only be produced by spinal circuits; this is followed by slower components thought to arise from primary motor cortex (M1) and other supraspinal areas. Spinal cord (SC) contributions to the slower components are rarely considered. To address this, we recorded neural activity in M1 and the cervical SC during a visuomotor tracking task, in which 2 female macaque monkeys moved their index finger against a resisting motor to track an on-screen target. Following the behavioral trial, an increase in motor torque rapidly returned the finger to its starting position (lever velocity >200°/s). Many cells responded to this passive mechanical perturbation (M1: 148 of 211 cells, 70%; SC: 67 of 119 cells, 56%). The neural onset latency was faster for SC compared with M1 cells (21.7 ± 11.2 ms vs 25.5 ± 10.7 ms, respectively, mean ± SD). Using spike-triggered averaging, some cells in both regions were identified as likely premotor cells, with monosynaptic connections to motoneurons. Response latencies for these cells were compatible with a contribution to the muscle responses following the perturbation. Comparable fractions of responding neurons in both areas were active up to 100 ms after the perturbation, suggesting that both SC circuits and supraspinal centers could contribute to later response components. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Following a limb perturbation, multiple reflexes help to restore limb position. Given conduction delays, the earliest part of these reflexes can only arise from spinal circuits. By contrast, long-latency reflex components are typically assumed to originate from supraspinal centers. We recorded from both spinal and motor cortical cells in monkeys responding to index finger perturbations. Many spinal interneurons, including those identified as projecting to motoneurons, responded to the perturbation; the timing of responses was compatible with a contribution to both short- and long-latency reflexes. We conclude that spinal circuits also contribute to long-latency reflexes in distal and forearm muscles, alongside supraspinal regions, such as the motor cortex and brainstem.

Abstract
Increased reticulospinal (RS) function has been observed to cause both positive and negative outcomes in the recovery of motor function after corticospinal lesions such as stroke. Current knowledge of RS function is limited by the lack of accurate, noninvasive methods for measuring RS function. Recent studies suggest that the RS tract may be involved in processing and generating Long Latency Responses (LLRs). As such, LLRs, elicited by applying precisely controlled perturbations, can thus act as a reliable stimulus to measure brainstem function using fMRI with high signal-to-noise ratio.In this paper, we present StretchfMRI, a novel technique that enables simultaneous recording of neural and muscular activity during motor responses conditioned by robotic perturbations, which allows direct investigation of the neural correlates of LLRs.Via preliminary validation experiments, we demonstrate that our technique can reliably elicit and identify LLRs in two wrist muscles-Flexor Carpi Radialis and Extensor Carpi Ulnaris. Moreover, via a single-subject pilot experiment, we show that the occurrence of an LLR in a flexor and extensor muscles modulates neural activity in distinct regions of the brainstem. The observed somatotopic organization is in agreement with the double reciprocal model of RS function observed in animal models, in which the right medullary and left pontine reticular formation are responsible for control of the motor activity in flexors and extensors, respectively.

Abstract
Generation of automatic postural responses (APRs) scaled to magnitude of unanticipated postural perturbations is required to recover upright body stability. In the current experiment, we aimed to evaluate the effect of previous postural perturbations on APR scaling under conditions in which the current perturbation is equal to or different from the previous perturbation load inducing unanticipated forward body sway. We hypothesized that the APR is scaled from the association of the current perturbation magnitude and postural responses to preceding perturbations. Evaluation was made by comparing postural responses in the contexts of progressive increasing versus decreasing magnitudes of perturbation loads. Perturbation was applied by unanticipatedly releasing a cable pulling the body backwards, with loads corresponding to 6%, 8% and 10% of body mass. We found that the increasing as compared to the decreasing load sequence led to lower values of (a) displacement and (b) velocity of center of pressure, and of activation rate of the muscle gastrocnemius medialis across loads. Muscular activation onset latency decreased as a function increasing loads, but no significant effects of load sequence were found. These results lead to the conclusion that APRs to unanticipated perturbations are scaled from the association of somatosensory feedback signaling balance instability with feedforward control from postural responses to previous perturbations.

Abstract
The reticulospinal tract plays an important role in primate upper limb function, but methods for assessing its activity are limited. One promising approach is to measure rapid visual responses (RVRs) in arm muscle activity during a visually cued reaching task; these may arise from a tecto-reticulospinal pathway. We investigated whether changes in reticulospinal excitability can be assessed noninvasively using RVRs, by pairing the visual stimuli of the reaching task with electrical stimulation of the median nerve, galvanic vestibular stimulation, or loud sounds, all of which are known to activate the reticular formation. Surface electromyogram (EMG) recordings were made from the right deltoid of healthy human subjects as they performed fast reaching movements toward visual targets. Stimuli were delivered up to 200 ms before target appearance, and RVR was quantified as the EMG amplitude in a window 75–125 ms after visual target onset. Median nerve, vestibular, and auditory stimuli all consistently facilitated the RVRs, as well as reducing the latency of responses. We propose that this facilitation reflects modulation of tecto-reticulospinal excitability, which is consistent with the idea that the amplitude of RVRs can be used to assess changes in brain stem excitability noninvasively in humans. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Short-latency responses in arm muscles evoked during a visually driven reaching task have previously been proposed to be tecto-reticulospinal in origin. We demonstrate that these responses can be facilitated by pairing the appearance of a visual target with stimuli that activate the reticular formation: median nerve, vestibular, and auditory stimuli. We propose that this reflects noninvasive measurement and modulation of reticulospinal excitability.

Abstract
The long-latency "reflexive" response (LLR) following an upper limb mechanical perturbation is generated by neural circuitry shared with voluntary control. This feedback response supports many task-dependent behaviors and permits the expression of goal-directed corrections at latencies shorter than voluntary reaction time. An extensive body of literature has demonstrated that the LLR shows flexibility akin to voluntary control, but it has not yet been tested whether instruction-dependent LLR changes can also occur in the absence of an overt voluntary response. The present study used kinesthetic motor imagery (experiment 1) and instructed participants to execute movement with the unperturbed contralateral limb (experiment 2) to explore the relationship between the overt production of a voluntary response and LLR facilitation. Activity in stretched right wrist flexors were compared with standard "do not-intervene" and "compensate" conditions. Our findings revealed that on ~40% of imagery and ~50% of contralateral trials, a response occurred during the voluntary epoch in the stretched right wrist flexors. On these "leaked" trials, the early portion of the LLR (R2) was facilitated and displayed a similar increase to compensate trials. The latter half of the LLR (R3) showed further modulation, mirroring the patterns of voluntary epoch activity. By contrast, the LLR on "non-leaked" imagery and contralateral trials did not modulate. We suggest that even though a hastened voluntary response cannot account for all instruction-dependent LLR modulation, the overt execution of a response during the voluntary epoch in the same muscle(s) as the LLR is a prerequisite for instruction-dependent facilitation of this feedback response.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Using motor imagery and contralateral responses, we provide novel evidence that facilitation of the long-latency reflex (LLR) requires the execution of a response during the voluntary epoch. A high proportion of overt response "leaks" were found where the mentally simulated or mirrored response appeared in stretched muscle. The first half of the LLR was categorically sensitive to the appearance of leaks, whereas the latter half displayed characteristics closely resembling activity in the ensuing voluntary period.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Introduction Cognitive components are necessary to maintain posture during external perturbations. However, few studies have investigated postural control when external perturbations are associated with a concomitant cognitive task (DT). Objectives To analyze the behavior of reactive adjustments after perturbation with different intensities and displacements in active young adults; and to analyze the influence of DT on predictive and reactive adjustments in different perturbation conditions. Methods Twenty-eight physically active young adults stood on an item of equipment that produced displacements of the base. Four experimental conditions were introduced in a single task (ST) and DT (cognitive-report how many times a pre-established number appeared in the audio): 1 (5 cm and 10 cm/s); 2 (5 cm and 25 cm/s); 3 (12 cm and 10 cm/s) and 4 (12 cm and 25 cm/s). Three attempts were carried out for each condition (total=24). Center of pressure (CoP) parameters were analyzed considering the following windows: predictive (-250 to +50 ms), reactive 1 (+50 to +200 ms) and reactive 2 (+200 to +700 ms), in comparison to the start of the CoP activity. One-way ANOVAs were performed to analyze predictive adjustments, while two-way ANOVAs with factor for task (STxDT) and condition (1x2x3x4), with repeated measurements, were performed for the reactive adjustments. Results One-way ANOVA (predictive) indicated that the subjects had higher CoP parameters in ST vs DT. In reactive adjustments 1 and 2, ANOVA indicated greater CoP parameters in condition 2 and 4 when compared to 1 and 3, and in the ST vs DT. The subjects took longer to recover stable position in conditions 1 and 3 than in conditions 2 and 4. Conclusion Perturbation intensity has a greater influence on postural adjustments to maintain balance than on magnitude. Moreover, the association of cognitive tasks with external perturbation decreases CoP oscillation. Therefore, cognitive resources play an important role in postural control after perturbation. Abstract
Responses elicited after the shortest latency spinal reflexes but prior to the onset of voluntary activity can display sophistication beyond a stereotypical reflex. Two distinct behaviors have been identified for these rapid motor responses, often called long-latency reflexes. The first is to maintain limb stability by opposing external perturbations. The second is to quickly release motor actions planned prior to the disturbance, often called a triggered reaction. This study investigated their interaction when motor tasks involve both limb stabilization and motor planning. We used a robotic manipulator to change the stability of the haptic environment during 2D arm reaching tasks, and to apply perturbations that could elicit rapid motor responses. Stabilizing reflexes were modulated by the orientation of the haptic environment (field effect) whereas triggered reactions were modulated by the target to which subjects were instructed to reach (target effect). We observed that there were no significant interactions between the target and field effects in the early (50–75 ms) portion of the long-latency reflex, indicating that these components of the rapid motor response are initially controlled independently. There were small but significant interactions for two of the six relevant muscles in the later portion (75–100 ms) of the reflex response. In addition, the target effect was influenced by the direction of the perturbation used to elicit the motor response, indicating a later feedback correction in addition to the early component of the triggered reaction. Together, these results demonstrate how distinct components of the long-latency reflex can work independently and together to generate sophisticated rapid motor responses that integrate planning with reaction to uncertain conditions.

Abstract
Previous studies have demonstrated a progression of function when healthy subjects counter a sudden mechanical load. Short-latency reflexes are linked to local stretch of the particular muscle and its antagonist. Long-latency reflexes integrate stretch information from both local sources and muscles crossing remote joints appropriate for a limb's mechanical interactions. Unresolved is how sensory information is processed throughout the corrective response, since capabilities at some time can be produced by circuits acting at that delay and at briefer delays. One possibility is that local abilities are always expressed at a short-latency delay and integrative abilities are always expressed at a long-latency delay. Alternatively, the neural circuits may be altered over time, leading to a temporal shift in expressing certain abilities; a refractory period could retard integrative responses to a second perturbation, whereas priming could enable integrative responses at short latency. We tested between these three hypotheses in a shoulder muscle by intermixing trials of step torque with either torque pulses ( experiment 1) or double steps of torque ( experiment 2). The second perturbation occurred at 35, 60, and 110 ms after the first perturbation to probe processing throughout the corrective action. The second perturbation reliably evoked short-latency responses in the shoulder muscle linked to only shoulder motion and long-latency responses linked to both shoulder and elbow motion. This pattern is best accounted by the continuous action of controllers with fixed functions. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Sudden displacement of the limb evokes a short-latency reflex, 20-50 ms, based on local muscle stretch and a long-latency reflex based on integrating muscle stretch at different joints. A novel double-perturbation paradigm tested if these abilities are temporally conserved throughout the corrective response or are shifted (retarded or delayed) due to functional changes in the responsible circuits. Multi-joint integration was reliably expressed at a long-latency delay consistent with the continuous operation of circuits with fixed abilities.

Abstract
Recent work has shown that, when countering external forces, the nervous system adjusts not only predictive (i.e., feedforward) control of reaching but also reflex (i.e., feedback) responses to mechanical perturbations. Here we show that altering the physical properties of the arm (i.e., intersegmental dynamics) causes the nervous system to adjust feedforward control and that this learning transfers to feedback responses even though the latter were never directly trained. Forty-five human participants (30 females) performed a single-joint elbow reaching task and countered mechanical perturbations that created pure elbow motion. In our first experiment, we altered intersegmental dynamics by asking participants to generate pure elbow movements when the shoulder joint was either free to rotate or locked by the robotic manipulandum. With the shoulder unlocked, we found robust activation of shoulder flexor muscles for pure elbow flexion trials, as required to counter the interaction torques that arise at the shoulder because of forearm rotation. After locking the shoulder joint, which cancels these interaction torques, we found a substantial reduction in shoulder muscle activity over many trials. In our second experiment, we tested whether such learning transfers to feedback control. Mechanical perturbations applied to the arm with the shoulder unlocked revealed that feedback responses also account for intersegmental dynamics. After locking the shoulder joint, we found a substantial reduction in shoulder feedback responses, as appropriate for the altered intersegmental dynamics. Our work suggests that feedforward and feedback control share an internal model of the arm's dynamics.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Here we show that altering the physical properties of the arm causes people to learn new motor commands and that this learning transfers to their reflex responses to unexpected mechanical perturbations, even though the reflex responses were never directly trained. Our results suggest that feedforward motor commands and reflex responses share an internal model of the arm's dynamics.

Abstract
Successful performance in many everyday tasks requires compensating unexpected mechanical disturbance to our limbs and body. The long-latency reflex plays an important role in this process because it is the fastest response to integrate sensory information across several effectors, like when linking the elbow and shoulder or the arm and body. Despite the dozens of studies on inter-effector long-latency reflexes, there has not been a comprehensive treatment of how these reveal the basic control organization that sets constraints on any candidate model of neural feedback control such as optimal feedback control. We considered three contrasting ways that controllers can be organized: multiple independent controllers vs. a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) controller, a continuous feedback controller vs. an intermittent feedback controller, and a direct MIMO controller vs. a state feedback controller. Following a primer on control theory and review of the relevant evidence, we conclude that continuous state feedback control best describes the organization of inter-effector coordination by the long-latency reflex.

Abstract
This investigation aimed to assess the effect of feet orientation angle in upright stance on automatic postural responses (APRs) to mechanical perturbations of different magnitudes. Perturbation was produced by releasing suddenly a load attached to the participant's trunk, leading to forward body sway. We evaluated APRs to loads corresponding to 5% (low) and 10% (high) of the participant's body weight, comparing the following feet orientations: parallel, preferred (M=10.46°), 15° and 30° for each foot regarding the body midline. Results showed that APRs were sensitive to perturbation magnitude, with the high load leading to increased amplitudes of center of pressure displacement and joints rotation, in addition to stronger and earlier muscular responses. Feet orientation at 30° led to a greater amplitude of center of pressure displacement than the other feet orientations. The low perturbation magnitude led to similar responses both at the hip and ankle across feet orientations, whereas the high load induced increased rotation amplitudes in both joints for feet orientation at 30°. Our results suggest that APRs are generated by the nervous system taking into consideration the biomechanical constraints in the response production. Relevant for standardization of feet placement in evaluations of balance recovery, our results indicated that a moderate range of outward feet orientation angles in stance lead to comparable APRs, while increased outward feet orientation angles lead to distinct postural responses.

Abstract
The long-latency stretch reflex (LLSR) in human elbow muscles probably depends on multiple pathways; one possible contributor is the reticulospinal tract. Here we attempted to induce plastic changes in the LLSR by pairing noninvasive stimuli that are known to activate reticulospinal pathways, at timings predicted to cause spike timing-dependent plasticity in the brainstem. In healthy human subjects, reflex responses in flexor muscles were recorded following extension perturbations at the elbow. Subjects were then fitted with a portable device that delivered auditory click stimuli through an earpiece, and electrical stimuli around motor threshold to the biceps muscle via surface electrodes. We tested the following four paradigms: biceps stimulus 10 ms before click (Bi-10ms-C); click 25 ms before biceps (C-25ms-Bi); click alone (C only); and biceps alone (Bi only). The average stimulus rate was 0.67 Hz. Subjects left the laboratory wearing the device and performed normal daily activities. Approximately 7 h later, they returned, and stretch reflexes were remeasured. The LLSR was significantly enhanced in the biceps muscle (on average by 49%) after the Bi-10ms-C paradigm, but was suppressed for C-25ms-Bi (by 31%); it was unchanged for Bi only and C only. No paradigm induced LLSR changes in the unstimulated brachioradialis muscle. Although we cannot exclude contributions from spinal or cortical pathways, our results are consistent with spike timing-dependent plasticity in reticulospinal circuits, specific to the stimulated muscle. This is the first demonstration that the LLSR can be modified via paired-pulse methods, and may open up new possibilities in motor systems neuroscience and rehabilitation. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT This report is the first demonstration that the long-latency stretch reflex can be modified by repeated, precisely timed pairing of stimuli known to activate brainstem pathways. Furthermore, pairing was achieved with a portable electronic device capable of delivering many more stimulus repetitions than conventional laboratory studies. Our findings open up new possibilities for basic research into these underinvestigated pathways, which are important for motor control in healthy individuals. They may also lead to paradigms capable of enhancing rehabilitation in patients recovering from damage, such as after stroke or spinal cord injury.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dementia is a major public health problem and it appears to be a global epidemic. The prevalence is doubling every 5 years and it is expected that 70% of persons above 60 years will live in developing countries by 2020 and 15% of them are likely to suffer from dementia. Disease modifying treatments work only if initiated very early; however, diagnostic tools are not always able to clearly differentiate the different types in very early stage. Therefore, inexpensive and easily available biomarkers are needed to know if collectively they will improve the sensitivity of specific diagnosis. Therefore, in this pilot study, we have tried to analyze if long loop reflex (LLR2) is differentially affected in these two conditions early in the course of Alzheimer's dementia (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) based on hypothesis taking into account the anatomical substrates involved. PATIENTS AND METHODS Mild cases of clinically probable AD and FTD after appropriate inclusion criteria were subjected for LLR testing in the upper limb at median nerve. The presence or absence of LLR was assessed and also the latency, amplitude, and duration assessed. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION LLR 2 is differentially affected in both these conditions. Absence of LLR2 was consistently seen in FTD which can be explained by early break down of frontal subcortical circuits in this condition as against AD. This is likely to serve as a very cheap and very early biomarker to differentiate the two common types of cortical dementias.

Abstract
In the present experiment, we aimed to evaluate the interactive effect of performing a cognitive task simultaneously with a manual task requiring either high or low steadiness on APRs. Young volunteers performed the task of recovering upright balance following a mechanical perturbation provoked by unanticipatedly releasing a load pulling the participant's body backwards. The postural task was performed while holding a cylinder steadily on a tray. One group performed that task under high (cylinder' round side down) and another one under low (cylinder' flat side down) manual steadiness constraint. Those tasks were evaluated in the conditions of performing concurrently a cognitive numeric subtraction task and under no cognitive task. Analysis showed that performance of the cognitive task led to increased body and tray displacement, associated with higher displacement at the hip and upper trunk, and lower magnitude of activation of the GM muscle in response to the perturbation. Conversely, high manual steadiness constraint led to reduced tray velocity in association with lower values of trunk displacement, and decreased rotation amplitude at the ankle and hip joints. We found no interactions between the effects of the cognitive and manual tasks on APRs, suggesting that they were processed in parallel in the generation of responses for balance recovery. Modulation of postural responses from the manual and cognitive tasks indicates participation of higher order neural structures in the generation of APRs, with postural responses being affected by multiple mental processes occurring in parallel.

Abstract
Postural corrections of the upper limb are required in tasks ranging from handling an umbrella in the changing wind to securing a wriggling baby. One complication in this process is the mechanical interaction between the different segments of the arm where torque applied at one joint induces motion at multiple joints. Previous studies have shown the long-latency reflexes of shoulder muscles (50-100 ms after a limb perturbation) account for these mechanical interactions by integrating information about motion of both the shoulder and elbow. It is less clear whether long-latency reflexes of elbow muscles exhibit a similar capability and what is the relation between the responses of shoulder and elbow muscles. The present study utilized joint-based loads tailored to the subjects' arm dynamics to induce well-controlled displacements of their shoulder and elbow. Our results demonstrate that the long-latency reflexes of shoulder and elbow muscles integrate motion from both joints: the shoulder and elbow flexors respond to extension at both joints, whereas the shoulder and elbow extensors respond to flexion at both joints. This general pattern accounts for the inherent flexion-extension coupling of the two joints arising from the arm's intersegmental dynamics and is consistent with spindle-based reciprocal excitation of shoulder and elbow flexors, reciprocal excitation of shoulder and elbow extensors, and across-joint inhibition between the flexors and extensors.
