Abstract
Depression is a common mental illness, which is highly related to intestinal motor dysfunction and causes a global burden of disease. Lindera aggregata (LA), a traditional medicinal herb, has been used to treat gastrointestinal disorders; however, the effect of LA on depression remains unclear. Here, we assessed the impact of LA on chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-induced depression in mice and explored the related mechanisms. The results showed that LA ameliorated depressive behaviors in mice exposed to CUMS, as evidenced by improved performance in the sucrose preference test, force swimming test, and open field test, as well as increased serum levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone and 5-hydroxytryptamine. In addition, LA increased the serum levels of D-xylose and ghrelin, indicating that LA can promote gastrointestinal motility. Additional studies revealed that LA relieved CUMS-induced hippocampal tissue damage, as shown by hematoxylin and eosin and Nissl staining. LA increased the expression levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and promoted the activation of tropomyosin receptor kinase B (TrkB) and cAMP response element-binding (CREB) in the hippocampus of CUMS-exposed mice or in corticosterone-injured HT22 cells. In conclusion, LA can improve CUMS-induced depressive behavior in mice, potentially through hippocampal neuroprotection mediated by the BDNF/TrkB/CREB signaling pathway, which also contributes to improved intestinal function.

Abstract
Lindera aggregata, a member belongs to the genus Lindera of Lauraceae family. Its roots and leaves have been used as traditional Chinese medicine or functional food for thousands of years. However, its mitochondrial genome has not been explored. Our aim is to sequence and assemble the mitogenome of L. aggregata to elucidate the genetic mechanism and evolutionary pathway. The results had shown that the mitogenome was extremely complex and had a unique multi-branched conformation with total size of 912,473 bp. Comprehensive analysis of protein coding genes of 7 related species showed that there were 40 common genes in their mitogenome. Interestingly, positive selection had become an important factor in the evolution of ccmB, ccmFC, rps10, rps11 and rps7 genes. Furthermore, our data highlighted the repeated trend of homologous fragment migrations between chloroplast and mitochondrial organelles, and 38 homologous fragments were identified. Phylogenetic analysis identified a tree that was basically consistent with the phylogeny of Laurales species described in the APG IV system. To sum up, this study will be helpful to the study of population genetics and evolution of Lindera species.

Abstract
In our search for neuroprotective agents, six previously undescribed highly oxidized guaiane sesquiterpenes, linderaggrols A-F (1-6), together with three known sesquiterpenes, were isolated from the roots of Lindera aggregata (Sims) Kosterm. Their structures including absolute configurations were established by a combination of NMR spectroscopic techniques and single crystal X-ray diffraction experiments. Compounds 1-6 represented the first instances of guaiane 12(8),15(6)-dilactones. Additionally, compound 6 possessed a rare 1,8-O-bridge. Neuroprotective effects against erastin-induced ferroptosis on HT-22 cells showed that some compounds demonstrated neuroprotective effects at 20.0 μM.

Abstract
This research was conducted to examine the impact of Wei Qi Booster (WQB) on immune parameters and anti-oxidative function in aged mice. Fifty aged mice were randomly assigned to five different groups. Group A was designated as the control group. Mice in Group B were receiving Levamisole at 10 mg/kg body weight. Each mouse in groups C, D and E received 0.1, 1, and 2% WQB, respectively. Another ten young mice, designated as group F, were fed regularly. The mice were fed according to the above methods for 28 days. Results showed that relative to the control group, the body weight and immune organs indexes experienced a substantial rise in the group with 1% WQB. In addition, 1% WQB could improve the activity of SOD and reduce the MDA levels. Expressions of CD4 and sIgA increased while CD8 decreased in the jejunum of aged mice treated with WQB. IL2 and IFN-γ levels increased in the 1% WQB group, showing no notable difference compared to the young mice group. The results demonstrated that WQB can elevate immune levels and enhance anti-oxidative functions in aged mice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Capillary electrophoresis is a powerful analytical method featured with high separation efficiency, minimal sample requirements, and reduced organic solvents consumption. However, its low sensitivity hinders its wide application in determination of trace analytes especially for the weakly ionized hydrophobic compounds. Offline and Online capillary electrophoresis stacking methods are more favored to enhance detection sensitivity of analytes. The determination of two sesquiterpenes and an alkaloid from the dried root of Lindera aggregata merged as an example for developing a simple, sensitive and green method for the simultaneous determination of two hydrophobic compounds in complicated matrix samples. RESULTS An offline-online capillary electrophoresis stacking strategy by integrating micro matrix solid phase dispersion with field-amplified sample stacking and micelle to cyclodextrin stacking has been developed for the simultaneous determination of dehydrocostus lactone, linderane, norisoboldine in complex matrices. The optimized parameters were set at 65 mM sodium dihydrogen phosphate, 35 % methanol, 180 s for sample injection and 210 s for cyclodextrin injection, 20 mM sodium dodecyl sulfate of sample matrix for online stacking; 1:1 sample to MCM-48, 180 s grinding time, and 1000 μL of 20 mM sodium dodecyl sulfate elution for offline procedure. Under the optimum conditions, the method showed good linearity with correlation coefficients (R2 ≥ 0.9927), low limits of detection within the range of 25-50 ng mL-1, satisfactory repeatability and reproducibility below 3.98 %, and acceptable recoveries between 94 % and 97 %. The developed method was successfully applied to two real samples, the root of L. aggregata and rat feces. SIGNIFICANCE Sodium dodecyl sulfate is firstly used as an eluent in micro matrix solid phase dispersion and plays a dual role throughout the analytical procedure, including extraction solvent in sample preparation and micelle pseudophase during online stacking. It brings great procedure convenience to the method. The sensitivity of this method can improve up to 1283-folds compared with the normal mode. Moreover, the overall strategy indicates satisfied green potential evaluated by greenness assessment tools.

Abstract
SCOPE Norisoboldine (NOR) is a major isoquinoline alkaloid component in the traditional Chinese herbal plant Lindera aggregata (Sims) Kosterm, with previously reported anti-osteoclast differentiation and antiarthritis properties. However, the roles of NOR on osteoblasts, bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), and osteoporosis in vivo have never been well established. METHODS AND RESULTS This study investigates the ability of NOR to improve bone formation in vitro and in vivo. Osteoblasts and BMSCs are used to study the effect of NOR on osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation. It finds that NOR promotes osteogenic differentiation of osteoblasts and BMSCs, while inhibiting adipogenic differentiation of BMSCs by reducing the relative expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (Ppar-γ) and adiponectin, C1Q and collagen domain containing (Adipoq). Mechanistic studies show that NOR increases osteoblast differentiation through the mechanistic target of rapamycin kinase (mTOR)/ribosomal protein S6 kinase; polypeptide 1 (S6K1) pathway, and treatment with an mTOR inhibitor rapamycin blocked the NOR-induced increase in mineral accumulation. Finally, the study evaluates the therapeutic potential of NOR in a mouse model of ovariectomy (OVX)-induced bone loss. NOR prevents bone loss in both trabecular and cortical bone by increasing osteoblast number and phospho-S6K1 (p-S6K1) expression in osteoblasts. CONCLUSION NOR effects in enhancing osteoblast-induced bone formation via S6K1 pathway, suggesting the potential of NOR in osteoporosis treatment by increasing bone formation.

Abstract
Lindera aggregata is a species of the Lauraceae family, which has important medicinal, economic and ornamental values. In this study, we sequenced, assembled and annotated the chloroplast genome of L. aggregata and reannotated and corrected eight unverified annotations in the same genus. The chloroplast genomes taxa from Lindera and from different genera of Lauraceae were compared and analyzed, and their phylogenetic relationship and divergence time were speculated. All the 36 chloroplast genomes had typical quadripartite structures that ranged from 150,749 to 154,736 bp in total length. These genomes encoded 111-112 unique genes, including 78-79 protein-coding genes, 29-30 tRNA and 4 rRNA. Furthermore, there were 78-97 SSRs loci in these genomes, in which mononucleotide repeats were the most abundant; there were 24-49 interspersed repeats, and forward repeat types were the most frequent. The codon bias patterns of all species tended to use codons ending with A or U. Five and six highly variable regions were identified within genus and between genera, respectively, and three common regions (ycf1, ndhF-rpl32 and rpl32-trnL) were identified, which can be used as important DNA markers for phylogeny and species identification. According to the evaluation of the Ka/Ks ratio, most of the genes were under purifying selection, and only 10 genes were under positive selection. Finally, through the construction of the evolutionary tree of 39 chloroplast genomes, the phylogenetic relationship of Lauraceae was clarified and the evolutionary relationship of Lindera was revealed. The species of genus Lindera experienced rapid adaptive radiation from Miocene to Pleistocene. The results provided valuable insights for the study of chloroplast genomes in the Lauraceae family, especially in the genus Lindera.

Abstract
RATIONALE At present, there are limitations to the treatment of stiff person syndrome (SPS). Current treatments are still ineffective or financially burdensome for some patients, so it is imperative to explore more appropriate treatments for patients. This is a case report of a SPS with a more significant effect of combined Chinese and Western medicine, which may provide new treatment ideas for other patients. PATIENT CONCERNS This patient presented with episodes of stiffness and pain in the lower back and lower extremities. His electromyography shows continued activation of normal motor units in the paraspinal and abdominal muscles. However, relevant laboratory tests including glutamic acid decarboxylase antibody and Amphiphysin antibody were negative. After a period of treatment including clonazepam, baclofen, prednisone and intravenous immunoglobulin, this patient experiences a shortened maintenance period of medication, accompanied by symptoms such as emotional anxiety and cognitive decline, which severely affects his life. DIAGNOSES This patient was diagnosed with SPS. INTERVENTIONS In May 2022 the patient decided to combine Chinese medicine for simultaneous treatment. OUTCOMES During the period of simultaneous treatment with Chinese and Western medicine, the patient experienced remission of clinical symptoms, reduction of concomitant symptoms and improved quality of life. CONCLUSION A combination of Western and Chinese medicine was effective in relieving this patient pain and stiffness and reducing the patient anxiety. Combined Chinese and Western medicine treatment may be able to bring better results to more patients with stiff person syndrome.

Abstract
The chemical composition, antifungal, antibiofilm, and molecular docking studies of the essential oil obtained from Lindera caesia were investigated. A total of thirty-nine components (96.7%) were identified using gas chromatography (GC-FID) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The major components included terpinen-4-ol (26.3%), neo-intermedeol (23.2%), eudesma-4,11-dien-3-one (10.4%), and o-cymene (5.3%). The antifungal activity was tested against Candida albicans and Streptococcus mutans using the broth microdilution assay, whereas the microbial biofilms were determined using a semi-quantitative static biofilm. The essential oil exhibited activity against C. albicans (MIC 125 µg/mL) and S. mutans (MIC 250 µg/mL), and increased the biofilm of C. albicans by 31.25% when treated with 500 µg/mL. The molecular docking study shows neo-intermedeol, eudesma-4,11-dien-3-one, α-selinene, and β-selinene as the good candidate to target Erg11 with a binding energy of -7.3 kcal/mol. These findings demonstrated that the essential oil may have potential in dental application for caries prevention.

Abstract
The chemical composition of the essential oil of Lindera subumbelliflora (Lauraceae) was investigated for the first time. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation and fully characterised by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The antifungal activity of L. subumbelliflora essential oil was tested against Candida albicans and Streptococcus mutans using the broth microdilution assay, whereas the microbial biofilms were determined using a semi-quantitative static biofilm. A total of 28 components (99.6%) were successfully identified, which were characterised by β-eudesmol (14.6%), cis-α-bergamotene (11.0%), α-copaene (8.5%), dodecen-1-ol (8.5%), and (E)-nerolidol (8.3%). The essential oil exhibited activity against Candida albicans and Streptococcus mutans with MIC values of 250 and 500 µg/mL, respectively. The essential oil increased the biofilm of Candida albicans by 38.25%, however, decreased the biofilm of Streptococcus mutans by 47.89% when treated with 500 µg/mL. Thus, the essential oil has a promising application in dentistry via inhibition of the growth of Candida albicans and Streptococcus mutans. However, the antibiofilm activity of the essential oil is only applicable for cariogenic Streptococcus mutans.
