Abstract
The hepatoprotective effects of kiwifruit seed oil (KSO) were evaluated on acute liver injury (ALI) induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in vivo. Network pharmacology was used to predict active compounds and targets. Metabolomics and gut microbiota analyses were used to discover the activity mechanism of KSO. KSO improved the liver histological structure, significantly reduced serum proinflammatory cytokine levels, and increased liver antioxidant capacity. The metabolomics analysis showed that KSO may have hepatoprotective effects by controlling metabolites through its participation in signaling pathways like tryptophan metabolism, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, galactose metabolism, and bile secretion. The gut microbiota analysis demonstrated that KSO improved the composition and quantity of the gut flora. Network pharmacological investigations demonstrated that KSO operated by altering Ptgs2, Nos2, Ppara, Pparg and Serpine1 mRNA levels. All evidence shows that KSO has a hepatoprotective effect, and the mechanism is connected to the regulation of metabolic disorders and intestinal flora.

Abstract
Probiotics can regulate gut microbiota and protect against acute alcohol-induced liver injury through the gut-liver axis. However, efficacy is strain-dependent, and their mechanism remains unclear. This study investigated the effect of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), including Lacticaseibacillus paracasei E10 (E10), Lactiplantibacillus plantarum M (M), Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus LGG (LGG), Lacticaseibacillus paracasei JN-1 (JN-1), and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei JN-8 (JN-8), on the prevention of acute alcoholic liver injury in mice. We found that LAB pretreatment reduced serum alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) and reduced hepatic total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG). JN-8 pretreatment exhibited superior efficacy in improving hepatic antioxidation. LGG and JN-8 pretreatment significantly attenuated hepatic and colonic inflammation by decreasing the expression of interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and increasing the expression of interleukin 10 (IL-10). JN-1 and JN-8 pretreatments have better preventive effects than other LAB pretreatment on intestinal barrier dysfunction. In addition, the LAB pretreatment improved gut microbial dysbiosis and bile acid (BA) metabolic abnormality. All of the strains were confirmed to have bile salt deconjugation capacities in vitro, where M and JN-8 displayed higher activities. This study provides new insights into the prevention and mechanism of LAB strains in preventing acute alcoholic liver injury.

Abstract
Alcoholic liver damage is caused by long-term or heavy drinking, and it may further progress into alcoholic liver diseases (ALD). Probiotic supplements have been suggested for the prevention or improvement of liver damage. This study was designed to consider the ameliorative effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus NKU FL1-8 isolated from infant feces against alcoholic liver damage. The mice were gavaged with a 50% ethanol solution and treated with 109 CFU of L. rhamnosus NKU FL1-8 suspension. The factors for liver function, oxidative stress, inflammation, gut microbiota composition, and intestinal barrier integrity were measured. The results showed that L. rhamnosus NKU FL1-8 could decrease the levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) to 61% and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) to 50% compared with ethanol given by gavage. It could inhibit the expression level of malondialdehyde (MDA), increase superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH) to relieve oxidative stress, and down-regulate the cytokines to decrease hepatic inflammation. After treatment, the level of triglycerides was reduced, and the expression levels of adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and the peroxisome proliferators-activated receptor-α (PPAR-α) pathway were up-regulated. Additionally, the 16S rRNA sequencing analysis showed that L. rhamnosus NKU FL1-8 increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus, Ruminococcaceae, etc. At the same time, L. rhamnosus NKU FL1-8 could significantly reduce lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and enhance intestinal tight junction proteins. These results demonstrated that L. rhamnosus NKU FL1-8 could reduce the level of oxidative stress, fat accumulation, and liver inflammation caused by alcohol in the host. The underlying mechanism could be that L. rhamnosus NKU FL1-8 inhibits LPS by regulating the gut microbiota and repairing the intestinal barrier. Thereby, these findings support L. rhamnosus NKU FL1-8 as a potential functional food for the relief of ALD.

Abstract
This study reports the toxicity of Pb exposure on systemic inflammation in high-fat-diet (HFD) mice and the potential mechanisms. Results indicated that Pb exacerbated intestinal barrier damage and increased serum levels of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and diamine oxidase in HFD mice. Elevated LPS activates the colonic and ileal LPS-TLR4 inflammatory signaling pathway and further induces hepatic and adipose inflammatory expression. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing results showed that Pb promoted the abundance of potentially harmful and LPS-producing bacteria such as Coriobacteriaceae_UCG-002, Alloprevotella, and Oscillibacter in the intestines of HFD mice, and their abundance was positively correlated with LPS levels. Additionally, Pb inhibited the abundance of the beneficial bacteria Akkermansia, resulting in lower levels of the metabolite short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Meanwhile, Pb inhibited adenosine 5'-monophosphate-activated protein kinase signaling-mediated lipid metabolism pathways, promoting hepatic lipid accumulation. The above results suggest that Pb exacerbates systemic inflammation and lipid disorders in HFD mice by altering the gut microbiota, intestinal barrier, and the mediation of metabolites LPS and SCFAs. Our study provides potential novel mechanisms of human health related to Pb-induced metabolic damage and offers new evidence for a comprehensive assessment of Pb risk.

Abstract
Juice fermented with lactic acid bacteria (LAB) has received attention due to its health benefits, such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Previous research on LAB-fermented goji juice mainly focused on exploring the changes in the metabolite profile and antioxidant activity in vitro, whereas the liver protection properties of LAB-fermented goji juice in vivo are still unknown. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei E10-fermented goji juice (E10F), Lactiplantibacillus plantarum M-fermented goji juice (MF), Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus LGG-fermented goji juice (LGGF) on preventing acute alcoholic liver injury with physiology, gut microbial, and metabolic profiles in mice. Compared with goji juice, E10F, MF, and LGGF enhanced the protective effect against liver injury by reducing serum alanine transaminase (ALT) levels, improving the hepatic glutathione (GSH) antioxidant system, and attenuating inflammation by decreasing the levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β. Furthermore, E10F, MF, and LGGF increased intestinal integrity, restructured the gut microbiota including Bacteroides and Lactobacillus, and altered gut microbial metabolites including kyotorphin, indolelactic acid, and N-methylserotonin. Pretreatment of different LAB-fermented goji juice in mice showed significant differences in gut microbiota and metabolism. The correlation analysis demonstrated that the increase of Lactobacillus, indolelactic acid, and N-methylserotonin by E10F, MF, and LGGF was positively correlated with reduced inflammation and improved liver and gut function. Taken together, E10F, MF, and LGGF all have the potential to be converted into dietary interventions to combat acute alcoholic liver injury. It provided a reference for the study of the hepatoprotective effect of LAB-fermented goji juice.

Abstract
PURPOSE Chronic alcohol use is a major cause of liver damage and death. In the United States, multiple factors have led to low utilization of pharmacotherapy for alcohol use disorder (AUD), including lack of provider knowledge and comfort in prescribing medications for AUD. Alcohol consumption has direct effects on the gut microbiota, altering the diversity of bacteria and leading to bacterial overgrowth. Growing evidence suggests that alcohol's effects on the gut microbiome may contribute to increased alcohol consumption and progression of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). This article reviews human and preclinical studies investigating the role of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in ameliorating alcohol-associated alterations to the liver, gut, and brain resulting in altered behavior; it also discusses the therapeutic potential of FMT. SEARCH METHODS For this narrative review, a literature search was conducted in September 2022 of PubMed, Web of Science Core Collection, and Google Scholar to identify studies published between January 2012 and September 2022. Search terms used included "fecal microbiota transplantation" and "alcohol." SEARCH RESULTS Most results of the literature search were review articles or articles on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease; these were excluded. Of the remaining empirical manuscripts, very few described clinical or preclinical studies that were directly investigating the effects of FMT on alcohol drinking or related behaviors. Ultimately, 16 studies were included in the review. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS The literature search identified only a few studies that were directly investigating the effect of FMT on ALD or alcohol drinking and related behaviors. Largely proof-of-concept studies, these findings demonstrate that alcohol can alter the gut microbiome and that the microbiome can be transferred between humans and rodents to alter affective behaviors frequently associated with increased alcohol use. Other studies have shown promise of FMT or other probiotic supplementation in alleviating some of the symptoms associated with ALD and drinking. These results show that the implementation of FMT as a therapeutic approach is still in the investigatory stages.

Abstract
Astragali Radix (AR) or its extract has been used as an herbal medicine and dietary supplement in China, Europe, and the United States. The gut microbiota could provide new insights for exploring dietary supplements' underlying mechanism on organisms. However, no reports have focused on the regulatory effect of AR on the gut microbiota as a dietary supplement. In this study, healthy ICR mice of either sex were divided into AR and control (CON) groups and given AR water extract (4.55 mg/kg·day-1) or saline by gavage for 14 days, respectively. Then 16S rRNA gene sequencing and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry-based fecal metabolomics were integrated to investigate the benefits of dietary AR. Weighted gene coexpression network analysis was also introduced to investigate the metabolites with highly synergistic changes. AR supplementation influenced the structure of intestinal microflora, especially enriching short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria g_Coprobacillus, g_Prevotella, and g_Parabacteroides. AR also significantly altered the fecal metabolome, mainly related to amino acid metabolism, nucleotide metabolism, and bile acid (BA) metabolism. Moreover, the increased secondary BAs and BA-sulfates might closely relate to intestinal microflora. These findings provide valuable insights for future research of dietary AR as a functional food.

Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) fermentation is frequently employed to improve the nutritional, functional, and sensory characteristics of foods. Our study explored the effects of co-fermentation with Lacticaseibacillus paracasei ZH8 and Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis YM313 on the physicochemical properties, antioxidant activity, and metabolomic profiles of wolfberry-longan juice (WLJ). Fermentation was carried out at 35 °C for 15 h. The results suggest that WLJ is a favorable substrate for LAB growth, reaching a total viable count exceeding 8 log CFU/mL after fermentation. LAB fermentation increased acidity, reduced the sugar content, and significantly impacted the juice color. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents of the WLJ and the antioxidant capacities based on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ABTS radical scavenging abilities and FRAP were significantly improved by LAB fermentation. Nontargeted metabolomics analysis suggested that the contents of small molecule substances in WLJ were considerably affected by LAB fermentation. A total of 374 differential metabolites were identified in the juice before and after fermentation, with 193 significantly upregulated metabolites and 181 siginificantly downregulated metabolites. The regulation of metabolites is important for improving the flavor and functions of juices, such as L-eucylproline, Isovitexin, Netivudine, 3-Phenyllactic acid, vanillin, and ethyl maltol, ect. This study provides a theoretical foundation for developing plant-based foods fermented with LAB.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between gut microbiota and human health has gradually been recognized. Increasing studies show that the disorder of gut microbiota is related to the occurrence and development of many diseases. Metabolites produced by the gut microbiota are responsible for their extensive regulatory roles. In addition, naturally derived medicine food homology species with low toxicity and high efficiency have been clearly defined owing to their outstanding physiological and pharmacological properties in disease prevention and treatment. AIM OF REVIEW Based on supporting evidence, the current review summarizes the representative work of medicine food homology species targeting the gut microbiota to regulate host pathophysiology and discusses the challenges and prospects in this field. It aims to facilitate the understanding of the relationship among medicine food homology species, gut microbiota, and human health and further stimulate the advancement of more relevant research. KEY SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS OF REVIEW As this review reveals, from the initial practical application to more mechanism studies, the relationship among medicine food homology species, gut microbiota, and human health has evolved into an irrefutable interaction. On the one hand, through affecting the population structure, metabolism, and function of gut microbiota, medicine food homology species maintain the homeostasis of the intestinal microenvironment and human health by affecting the population structure, metabolism, and function of gut microbiota. On the other hand, the gut microbiota is also involved in the bioconversion of the active ingredients from medicine food homology species and thus influences their physiological and pharmacological properties.

Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have exhibited strain/species specificity for different food matrices. We investigated the impact of LAB fermentation on the flavor, chemical profile, and bioactivity of goji juice. The colony counts of five selected strains reached above 8.5 log CFU/mL. The fermentation increased the organic acids, decreased the sugars, and improved the sensory quality of goji juice. The majority of the strains had increased acetic acid, heptanoic acid, ethyl phenylacetate, and linalool levels. Specific strains suppressed α-glucosidase and pancreatic lipase activities and increased the antioxidant activities of fermented goji juice. Based on non-targeted metabolomics and activities, 23 important differential metabolites were screened among 453 metabolites. The quantification results showed that isoquercitrin and m-coumaric content varied among strains, reflecting the strain specificity in flavone and flavonol biosynthesis and phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan biosynthesis. These findings will provide useful information for fermented goji juice biochemistry research.

Abstract
Shift of ingestive behavior is an important strategy for animals to adapt to change of the environment. We knew that shifts in animal dietary habits lead to changes in the structure of the gut microbiota, but we are not sure about if changes in the composition and function of the gut microbiota respond to changes in the nutrient intake or food items. To investigate how animal feeding strategies affect nutrient intakes and thus alter the composition and digestion function of gut microbiota, we selected a group of wild primate group for the study. We quantified their diet and macronutrients intake in four seasons of a year, and instant fecal samples were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA and metagenomics. These results demonstrated that the main reason that causes seasonal shifts of gut microbiota is the macronutrient variation induced by seasonal dietary differences. Gut microbes can help to compensate for insufficient macronutrients intake of the host through microbial metabolic functions. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the causes of seasonal variation in host-microbial variation in wild primates.

Abstract
Introduction The main goal of tobacco fermentation technology is to minimize the alkaloid content while improving flavor substance content. Methods This study revealed the microbial community structure and their metabolic functions during cigar leaf fermentation by high-throughput sequencing and correlation analysis, and evaluated the fermentation performance of functional microbes based on in vitro isolation and bioaugmentation fermentation. Results The relative abundance of Staphylococcus and Aspergillus increased first but then decreased during the fermentation, and would occupy the dominant position of bacterial and fungal communities, respectively, on the 21st day. Correlation analysis predicted that Aspergillus, Staphylococcus and Filobasidium could contribute to the formation of saccharide compounds, Bacillus might have degradation effects on nitrogenous substances. In particular, Candida, as a co-occurring taxa and biomarker in the later stage of fermentation, could not only degrade nitrogenous substrates and synthesize flavor substances, but also contribute to maintaining the stability of microbial community. Moreover, based on in vitro isolation and bioaugmentation inoculation, it was found that Candida parapsilosis and Candida metapsilosis could significantly reduce the alkaloids content and increase the content of flavor components in tobacco leaves. Discussion This study found and validated the critical role of Candida in the fermentation of cigar tobacco leaves through high-throughput sequencing and bioaugmentation inoculation, which would help guide the development of microbial starters and directional regulation of cigar tobacco quality.

Abstract
Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) by acetaminophen (APAP) was one of the most challenging liver diseases. Wolfberry (Lycium barbarum L.), a traditional Chinese medicinal material and food supplement, has a potential effect on increasing the abundance of Akkermansia muciniphila (A. muciniphila) in mice colons. However, the effect and mechanism of wolfberry remain unclear in APAP-induced DILI. In this study, wolfberry promoted the proliferation of activated-A. muciniphila in vitro and in vivo. For the first time, we detected that the activated-A. muciniphila but not the killed-A. muciniphila increased the expression level of Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP1) in the liver and alleviated liver injury in APAP-induced DILI mice. Mechanically, A. muciniphila improved the intestinal mucosal barrier and reduced lipopolysaccharide (LPS) content in the liver, leading to the increased expression level of YAP1. Furthermore, wolfberry increased the A. muciniphila abundance in the colon and YAP1 expression in the liver from APAP-induced DILI mice, which promoted the recovery of APAP-induced liver injury. Meanwhile, wolfberry combination with A. muciniphila synergistically increased AKK abundance and YAP1 expression in the liver. Our research provides an innovative strategy to improve DILI.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can progress into colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC) through the inflammation-cancer sequence. Although the mechanism of carcinogenesis in IBD has not been fully elucidated, the existing research indicates that CAC may represent a fundamentally different pathogenesis pattern of colorectal cancer. At present, there is no proven safe and effective medication to prevent IBD cancer. In recent years, Chinese medicine extracts and Chinese medicine monomers have been the subject of numerous articles about the prevention and treatment of CAC, but their clinical application is still relatively limited. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulas are widely applied in clinical practice. TCM formulas have demonstrated great potential in the prevention and treatment of CAC in recent years, although there is still a lack of review. Our work aimed to summarize the effects and potential mechanisms of TCM formulas for the prevention and treatment of CAC, point out the issues and limitations of the current research, and provide recommendations for the advancement of CAC research in the future. We discovered that TCM formulas regulated many malignant biological processes, such as inflammation-mediated oxidative stress, apoptosis, tumor microenvironment, and intestinal microecology imbalance in CAC, through a review of the articles published in databases such as PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Embase, and CNKI. Several major signal transduction pathways, including NF-κB, STAT3, Wnt/β-catenin, HIF-1α, and Nrf2, were engaged. TCM formula may be a promising treatment candidate to control the colitis-cancer transformation, however further high-quality research is required.
