Abstract
Background and aim Lymphocytes are effector cells that fight cancer by killing tumor cells. Here, we aim to explore the prognostic significance of both peripheral and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in newly diagnosed stage III/IV non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Materials and methods In total, 105 cases of newly diagnosed stage III/IV NSCLC from July 2017 to October 2022 at the Tianjin Beichen Hospital were retrospectively investigated. Peripheral blood samples at the time of diagnosis and tumor tissue slices from these patients were collected. General peripheral blood cell composition and TILs were measured and analyzed via an automatic blood analyzer and immunofluorescence staining analysis. The overall survival (OS) time of all patients was also obtained and analyzed. Results The median overall survival (mOS) of all patients is 12 months. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year overall survival rates were 60.5, 28.4, and 18.6%, respectively. Peripheral lymphocyte and neutrophil percentages, serum C-reactive protein (CRP) expression, tumor size, and tumor pathology are the prognostic factors of OS for newly diagnosed stage III/IV NSCLC patients. Moreover, patients with high tumor CD4+ and CD8+ T cell infiltration survived significantly longer compared to patients with low tumor CD4+ and CD8+ T cell infiltration (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.011, respectively). Compared to low tumor CD33+ cell infiltration, high tumor CD33+ cell infiltration was associated with worse OS (p = 0.018). High tumor CD8+ T cell infiltration was associated with lower peripheral lymphocyte number, lower serum CRP expression, smaller tumor size, and better tumor pathology (p = 0.012, p = 0.040, p = 0.012, and p = 0.029, respectively). Conclusion Increased numbers of peripheral lymphocytes, CD33+ cells, CD4+ TILs, and CD8+ TILs were significantly associated with OS in newly diagnosed stage III/IV NSCLC patients, which were positively associated with several basic clinical factors.

Abstract
Background and Objective Brachytherapy, a new form of radiation therapy, has been used to treat lung cancer and consists of two main forms of treatment: endobronchial brachytherapy and radioactive seed implantation brachytherapy (RSI-BT), the latter of which is used to treat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The use of RSI-BT in the treatment of NSCLC at our centre has yielded some positive results. Methods To more fully consider the context of this application, we conducted a search of PubMed from 2018 to March 5, 2023. The search included a combination of the MeSH terms: "brachytherapy" and "lung neoplasm". Key Content and Findings The majority of NSCLC patients who received RSI-BT achieved positive benefits. Most patients had a progression-free survival (PFS) of between 12 and 18 months. Additionally, radioactive particle stent implantation as a specific RSI-BT has shown therapeutic potential in the treatment of malignant airway obstruction. With the application of new technologies, RSI-BT will become more precise, efficient and inexpensive. Conclusions This review demonstrates that RSI-BT can be therapeutic in the treatment of both early and advanced NSCLC with manageable complications. There have also been reports on the combination of RSI-BT with other therapies, but more research is needed on the combination of RSI-BT with them.

Abstract
PURPOSE Currently there is a lack of effective treatment strategies for malignant superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS). We aim to investigate the therapeutic effect of intra-arterial chemotherapy (IAC) combined with the Single Needle Cone Puncture method for the 125I brachytherapy (SNCP-125I) in treating SVCS caused by stage III/IV Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC). MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty-two patients with SCLC who developed SVCS from January 2014 to October 2020 were investigated in this study. Out of these 62 patients, 32 underwent IAC combined with SNCP-125I (Group A) and 30 patients received IAC treatment only (Group B). Clinical symptom remission, response rate, disease control rate, and overall survival of these two groups of patients were analyzed and compared. RESULTS The remission rate of symptoms including dyspnea, edema, dysphagia, pectoralgia, and cough of malignant SVCS in Group A was significantly higher than that in Group B (70.5 and 50.53%, P=0.0004, respectively). The disease control rates (DCR, PR+CR+SD) of Group A and B were 87.5 and 66.7%, respectively (P=0.049). Response rates (RR, PR+CR) of Group A and Group B were 71.9 and 40% (P=0.011). The median overall survival (OS) of Group A was significantly longer than that in Group B which was 18 months compared to 11.75 months (P=0.0360). CONCLUSIONS IAC treatment effectively treated malignant SVCS in advanced SCLC patients. IAC combined with SNCP-125I in the treatment of malignant SVCS caused by SCLC showed improved clinical outcomes including symptom remission and local tumor control rates than IAC treatment only in treating SCLC-induced malignant SVCS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Every year, esophageal cancer is responsible for 509000 deaths and around 572000 new cases worldwide. Although esophageal cancer treatment options have advanced, patients still have a dismal 5-year survival rate.
AIM To investigate the relationship between genes associated to platelets and the prognosis of esophageal cancer.
METHODS We searched differentially expressed genes for changes between 151 tumor tissues and 653 normal, healthy tissues using the “limma” package. To develop a prediction model of platelet-related genes, a univariate Cox regression analysis and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator Cox regression analysis were carried out. Based on a median risk score, patients were divided into high-risk and low-risk categories. A nomogram was created to predict the 1-, 2-, and 3-year overall survival (OS) of esophageal cancer patients using four platelet-related gene signatures, TNM stages, and pathological type. Additionally, the concordance index, receiver operating characteristic curve, and calibration curve were used to validate the nomogram.
RESULTS The prognosis of esophageal cancer was associated to APOOL, EP300, PLA2G6, and VAMP7 according to univariate Cox regression analysis and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression analysis. Patients with esophageal cancer at high risk had substantially shorter OS than those with cancer at low risk, according to a Kaplan-Meier analysis (P < 0.05). TNM stage (hazard ratio: 2.187, 95% confidence interval: 1.242-3.852, P = 0.007) in both univariate and multivariate Cox regression and risk score were independently correlated with OS (hazard ratio: 2.451, 95% confidence interval: 1.599-3.756, P < 0.001).
CONCLUSION A survival risk score model and independent prognostic variables for esophageal cancer have been developed using APOOL, EP300, PLA2G6, and VAMP7. OS for esophageal cancer might be predicted using the nomogram based on TNM stage, pathological type, and risk score. The nomogram demonstrated strong predictive ability, as shown by the concordance index, receiver operating characteristic curve, and calibration curve.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the efficacy and safety of computed tomography-guided radioactive iodine-125 (125I) seed implantation for oligo-recurrence soft tissue sarcomas following surgical resection. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients with oligo-recurrence soft tissue sarcomas after curative surgical resection between June 2013 and December 2020 were included. The primary outcome measure was objective response rate according to the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST 1.1). The secondary outcomes included progression-free survival, overall survival, and safety profiles. RESULTS Twenty-nine patients receiving computed tomography-guided 125I seed implantation were included in the study. The objective response rates at 2-, 6- and 12-month follow-up were 48.3%, 65.5% and 40.9%, respectively. The median progression-free survival was 11.3 months. The median overall survival was 25.1 months, with a 1- and 2-year overall survival rate of 81.5% and 50.0%, respectively. No severe treatment-related adverse effects occured. CONCLUSION 125I seed implantation has the potential to be an effective and safe treatment for oligo-recurrence soft tissue sarcomas after surgical resection.

Abstract
Purpose. We aimed to examine the effects of 125I seeds on the gene expression of Bcl-2, Bax, and PI3K/Akt pathway components in cholangiocarcinoma cells. Methods. In vitro, human cholangiocarcinoma RBE cells were treated with 125I seeds (0.39 mCi or 0.85 mCi) for 72 h, 120 h, and 168 h. Cell proliferation and apoptosis were assessed. The expression of Bcl-2 and Bax was detected by RT-PCR, and Western blotting was carried out to explore changes in Akt activity. Result. 125I seeds inhibited the proliferation of RBE cells. The apoptosis rate of the RBE cells in the low-activity group was significantly higher than that in the high-activity group at 120 h and 168 h, while no difference was found between the two groups at 72 h.
