Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is the most common disease in adults. We conducted a clinical study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Bach Nien Kien (BNK) in supportive therapy for patients with symptomatic KOA. PATIENTS AND METHODS An open interventional study was performed on 60 patients aged 38 to 70 with the diagnosis of symptomatic KOA. The patients were assigned to a study group (SG) with 30 subjects and a control group (CG) with 30 subjects using a matching method. The patients in SG were treated with electroacupuncture, glucosamine supplement, and BNK, while the patients in CG received the same treatment without BNK. RESULTS At the end of the 30-day treatment (d30), the SG had a reduction in VAS score compared to a pre-treatment level of 3.03±0.96 points, which was more than the CG of 2.5±0.90 points. The excellent result in the SG was 10%, and the CG had no excellent result. The good result in the SG was 56.7%, and the CG group was only 26.7%. The moderate and poor results in the CG were high, 63.3%, and 10%, respectively; in the SG, only 26.7% and 6.7%. The difference in overall treatment results between the SG and CG was statistically significant (p<0.05). During the 30-day treatment period in both groups, no patient reported any undesirable effects. CONCLUSION Bach Nien Kien health supplement is effective and safe for controlling KOA symptoms and improving joint motion and quality of life for patients with symptomatic KOA.

Abstract
Aurones are a subclass of active flavonoids characterized with a scaffold of 2-benzylidene-3(2H)-benzofuranone. This type of chemicals are widely distributed in fruit, vegetable and flower, and contribute to human health. In this review, we summarize the natural aurones isolated from dietary plants. Their positive effects on immunomodulation, antioxidation, cancer prevention as well as maintaining the health status of cardiovascular, nervous system and liver organs are highlighted. The biosynthesis strategies of plant-derived aurones are elaborated to provide solutions for their limited natural abundance. The potential application of natural aurones in food coloration are also discussed. This paper combines the up-to-date information and gives a full image of dietary aurones.

Abstract
Three sesquiterpene lactones (1-3) were isolated from the aerial part of Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl.) A. Gray grown in the Hoa Binh province in Viet Nam. The structures of these three sesquiterpene lactones were identified as tagitinin A (1), 1β-hydroxytirotundin 3-O-methyl ether (2), and tagitinin C (3) by analyzing spectroscopic data. For the first time, compound 2 was isolated from T. diversifolia growing in Viet Nam. Furthermore, contrary to existing literature, we determined that compound 1 was the major isolate. Compounds 1 and 3 significantly decreased numbers of acute myeloid leukemia OCI-AML3 cells by promoting apoptosis and causing cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 phase at concentrations as low as 2.5 μg/mL (compound 1) and 0.25 μg/mL (compound 3). Additionally, all three compounds showed cytotoxic activity against five human cancer cell lines (A549, T24, Huh-7, 8505, and SNU-1), with IC50 values ranging from 1.32 ± 0.14 to 46.34 ± 2.74 μM. Overall, our findings suggest that compounds 1 and 3 may be potential anti-cancer therapeutics and thus warrant further study.

Antiviral Activity of Ficus rubiginosa Leaf Extracts against HSV-1, HCoV-229E and PV-1. Viruses 2022; 14:v14102257. Abstract
Ficus rubiginosa plant extract showed antimicrobial activity, but no evidence concerning its antiviral properties was reported. The antiviral activity of the methanolic extract (MeOH) and its n-hexane (H) and ethyl acetate (EA) fractions against Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1), Human coronavirus (HCoV) -229E, and Poliovirus-1 (PV-1) was investigated in the different phases of viral infection in the VERO CCL-81 cell line. To confirm the antiviral efficacy, a qPCR was conducted. The recorded cytotoxic concentration 50% was 513.1, 298.6, and 56.45 µg/mL for MeOH, H, and EA, respectively, assessed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay after 72 h of treatment. The Ficus rubiginosa leaf extract inhibited the replication of HSV-1 in the early stages of infection, showing a complete inhibition up to 0.62, 0.31, and 1.25 µg/mL. Against HCoV-229E, a total inhibition up to 1.25 µg/mL for MeOH and H as well as 5 µg/mL for EA was observed. Otherwise, no activity was recorded against PV-1. The leaf extract could act directly on the viral envelope, destructuring the lipid membrane and/or directly blocking the enriched proteins on the viral surface. The verified gene inhibition suggested that the treatments with M, H, and EA impaired HSV-1 and HCoV-229E replication, with a greater antiviral efficiency against HSV-1 compared to HCoV-229E, possibly due to a greater affinity of Ficus rubiginosa towards membrane glycoproteins and/or the different lipid envelopes.

Is the Household Microwave Recommended to Obtain Antioxidant-Rich Extracts from Lycium barbarum Leaves? Processes (Basel) 2021. Abstract
Nowadays, much interest is devoted to the extraction of plant materials, considering also their waste and by-products, to obtain antioxidant-rich products. The effect of household microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) on the phenolic content and antioxidant activity of Lycium barbarum leaf extracts was investigated. An experimental design approach was adopted considering solid/liquid ratio (1, 3, and 5 g of leaves in 150 mL water), irradiation time (1, 3, and 5 min), and microwave power (300, 400, and 500 W) as independent variables. These three factors and their interactions were studied to evaluate the effect of MAE conditions on the responses of total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, and chlorogenic acid content. The results showed that the analytical parameters were positively influenced by the solid/liquid ratio and time. On the contrary, microwave power was inversely correlated with the investigated responses. This research revealed that microwave extraction conditions should be carefully monitored to obtain bioactive-rich aqueous extracts with high antioxidant activity. A comparison with household traditional methods showed an unexpected lower phenolic content and antioxidant activity for MAE extract in respect to the decoction and infusion. In fact, it was found that L. barbarum leaf infusion had the best functional properties, regarding the investigated characteristics. The outcome of this study has implications for raising awareness that household preparation conditions strongly affect the health properties of herbal extracts.

Abstract
Artocarpus tonkinensis (At) leaf decoction, a traditional remedy prepared in North Vietnam by the Hmong ethnic group, is a tea extract rich in bioactive compounds that may have therapeutic effects in arthritis and backache. Indeed, it has been demonstrated that At is able to inhibit Th17 lymphocytes development and to protect mice in an experimental model of collagen-induced arthritis. By resorting to macrophage in vitro models of inflammation and osteoclastogenesis, we showed that At extract significantly reduced nitric oxide synthase 2 (NOS2) activity and IL-6 production by RAW 264.7 murine cells. Moreover, At demonstrated an anti-osteoclastogenic effect, as revealed by complete inhibition of TRAP-positive osteoclast formation and decreased expression of key osteoclast-related genes. This At activity likely relies on the inhibition of RANK downstream signaling pathway, as the activation of non-receptor tyrosine kinase Src is reduced upon RANKL-At exposure. Protective effect of At against bone loss was also enlightened in vivo by collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) experiment demonstrating that, although paw edema was only weakly opposed by drinking At decoction, bone and cartilage were well preserved in CIA+At mice and joint tissue expressed decreased levels of osteoclast marker genes respect to CIA control group. Maesopsin 4-O-β-D-glucoside (i.e., TAT-2, one of the main decoction bioactive components) was capable to contrast NOS2 activity, IL-6 expression and osteoclast formation, too, albeit to a lesser extent when compared to At decoction. Overall, this study enlightens another At cell target, macrophages, beside Th17 lymphocytes, and suggests that the anti-arthritic beneficial effects of At decoction largely derives from its ability to counteract not only inflammation, but also osteoclastogenesis.

Abstract
Immunomodulators are agents able to affect the immune system, by boosting the immune defences to improve the body reaction against infectious or exogenous injuries, or suppressing the abnormal immune response occurring in immune disorders. Moreover, immunoadjuvants can support immune system acting on nonimmune targets, thus improving the immune response. The modulation of inflammatory pathways and microbiome can also contribute to control the immune function. Some plant-based nutraceuticals have been studied as possible immunomodulating agents due to their multiple and pleiotropic effects. Being usually more tolerable than pharmacological treatments, their adjuvant contribution is approached as a desirable nutraceutical strategy. In the present review, the up to date knowledge about the immunomodulating properties of polysaccharides, fatty acids and labdane diterpenes have been analyzed, in order to give scientific basic and clinical evidence to support their practical use. Since promising evidence in preclinical studies, limited and sometimes confusing results have been highlighted in clinical trials, likely due to low methodological quality and lacking standardization. More investigations of high quality and specificity are required to describe in depth the usefulness of these plant-derived nutraceuticals in the immune system modulation, for health promoting and disease preventing purposes.

Abstract
The environmental hazards of arsenic (As) and copper (Cu) contamination have swept through quite a few districts worldwide. Whereas, molecular mechanisms involved in As- and Cu-induced immunotoxicity in Gallus gallus bursa of Fabricius (BF) are complex and elusive. Male Hy-line chickens were exposed to arsenic trioxide (As2O3; 30 mg/kg) and copper sulfate (CuSO4; 300 mg/kg) alone or in combination, respectively, to examine the potential ecotoxicity of them. The ions homeostasis and BF index of chicken had distinct changes after As or/and Cu exposure. Moreover, As or/and Cu treatment significantly increased the MDA content and NOS activity, and simultaneously resulted in reductions in CAT and AHR activities. Subsequently, it was further exhibited up-regulations of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), inflammatory mediators and pro-inflammation cytokines accompanied by depletion of anti-inflammatory cytokines and severe pathological conditions. Moreover, decreased ratio of IFN-γ/IL-4 and increased level of IL-17 illustrated an imbalance of the immune response. Meanwhile, incremental mRNA transcription and protein levels of heat shock proteins (HSPs) alleviated toxicity caused by As or/and Cu. Importantly, exposure to both contaminants significantly soared the BF injury in comparison with exposure to As or Cu alone. All these results illustrated that exposure to As2O3 or/and CuSO4 elicited BF tissue damage and ions changes, and its severity was associated with prolonged persistence of oxidative damage, accompanied by a dysregulated immune response which played a vital role in inflammatory injury. Additionally, combined management of As2O3 and CuSO4 could exacerbate BF injury.
