Abstract
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a persistent inflammatory intestinal disease that consistently affects the colon and rectum. Its exact cause remains unknown. UC causes a considerable challenge in healthcare, prompting research for novel therapeutic strategies. Although probiotics have gained popularity as possible candidates for managing UC, studies are still ongoing to identify the best probiotics or probiotic mixtures for clinical applications. This study aimed to determine the efficacy of a multi-strain probiotic mixture in mitigating intestinal inflammation in a colitis mouse model induced by dextran sulfate sodium. Specifically, a multi-strain probiotic mixture consisting of Tetragenococcus halophilus and Eubacterium rectale was used to study its impact on colitis symptoms. Anti-inflammatory effects were evaluated using ELISA and flow cytometry. The configuration of gut microbial communities was determined using 16S rRNA metagenomic analysis. According to this study, colitis mice treated with the probiotic mixture experienced reduced weight loss and significantly less colonic shortening compared to untreated mice. Additionally, the treated mice exhibited increased levels of forkhead box P3 (Foxp3) and interleukin 10, along with decreased expression of dendritic cell activation markers, such as CD40+, CD80+, and CD83+, in peripheral blood leukocytes and intraepithelial lymphocytes. Furthermore, there was a significant decrease in the frequencies of CD8+N.K1.1+ cells and CD11b+Ly6G+ cells. In terms of the gut microbiota, probiotic-mixture treatment of colitis mice significantly increased the abundance of the phyla Actinobacteria and Verrucomicrobia (p < 0.05). These results provide valuable insights into the therapeutic promise of multi-strain probiotics, shedding light on their potential to alleviate colitis symptoms. This research contributes to the ongoing exploration of effective probiotic interventions for managing inflammatory bowel disease.

Abstract
Due to the physiological alteration during pregnancy, maternal gut microbiota changes following the metabolic processes. Recent studies have revealed that maternal gut microbiota is closely associated with the immune microenvironment in utero during pregnancy and plays a vital role in specific pregnancy complications, including preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, preterm birth and recurrent miscarriages. Some other evidence has also shown that aberrant maternal gut microbiota increases the risk of various diseases in the offspring, such as allergic and neurodevelopmental disorders, through the immune alignment between mother and fetus and the possible intrauterine microbiota. Probiotics and the high-fiber diet are effective inventions to prevent mothers and fetuses from diseases. In this review, we summarize the role of maternal gut microbiota in the development of pregnancy complications and the health condition of future generations from the perspective of immunology, which may provide new therapeutic strategies for the health management of mothers and offspring.

Abstract
The asthma-COPD overlap syndrome (ACOS) presents lung inflammation similar to both asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Due to the immune response between the lung and gut, it is possible that ACOS individuals present gut dysbiosis. Due to therapeutic limitations in ACOS, Lactobacillus rhamnosus (Lr) have received attention once Lr has been effective in asthma and COPD. However, there is no data about the Lr effect on both lung inflammation and gut dysbiosis in ACOS. Thus, our study investigated the Lr effect on lung inflammation, bronchoconstriction, airway remodeling, and gut dysbiosis in the murine ACOS model. Treated mice with Lr were exposed to HDM and cigarette smoke to induce ACOS. Sixty days after ACOS induction, mice were euthanized. Lung inflammation was evaluated in leukocytes in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), airway remodeling, cytokine secretion, and transcription factor expression in the lung. The gut microbiota was assayed by 16S mRNA sequencing from a fecal sample. Leukocyte population, bronchial hyperreactivity, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and airway remodeling were attenuated in Lr-treated ACOS mice. Likewise, IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13, STAT6 and GATA3, as well as IL-17, IL-21, IL-22, STAT3, and RORɣt were reduced after Lr. In addition, IL-2, IL-12, IFN-γ, STAT1, and T-bet as well as IL-10, TGF-β, STAT5, and Foxp3 were restored after the Lr. Firmicutes was reduced, while Deferribacteres was increased after Lr. Likewise, Lr decreased Staphylococcus and increased Mucispirillum in ACOS mice. Lr improves fecal bacterial β-diversity. Our findings show for the first time the Lr effect on lung inflammation and gut dysbiosis in murine ACOS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a persistent inflammatory disorder that affects the gastrointestinal tract, mainly the colon, which is defined by inflammatory responses and the formation of ulcers. Probiotics have been shown to directly impact various immune cells, including dendritic cells (DCs), macrophages, natural killer (NK) cells, and T and B cells. By interacting with cell surface receptors, they regulate immune cell activity, produce metabolites that influence immune responses, and control the release of cytokines and chemokines. METHODS This article is a comprehensive review wherein we conducted an exhaustive search across published literature, utilizing reputable databases like PubMed and Web of Science. Our focus centered on pertinent keywords, such as "UC," 'DSS," "TNBS," "immune cells," and "inflammatory cytokines," to compile the most current insights regarding the therapeutic potential of probiotics in managing UC. RESULTS This overview aims to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the effects of probiotics on immune cells in relation to UC. Probiotics have a crucial role in promoting the proliferation of regulatory T cells (Tregs), which are necessary for preserving immunological homeostasis and regulating inflammatory responses. They also decrease the activation of pro-inflammatory cells like T helper 1 (Th1) and Th17 cells, contributing to UC development. Thus, probiotics significantly impact both direct and indirect pathways of immune cell regulation in UC, promoting Treg differentiation, inhibiting pro-inflammatory cell activation, and regulating cytokine and chemokine release. CONCLUSION Probiotics demonstrate significant potential in modulating the immune reactions in UC. Their capacity to modulate different immune cells and inflammation-related processes makes them a promising therapeutic approach for managing UC. However, further studies are warranted to optimize their use and fully elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying their beneficial effects in UC treatment.

Abstract
Probiotics have been evaluated as alternative approaches for preventing the relapse of Crohn's disease (CD). Previously, we observed strain-specific anti-inflammatory properties of Bifidobacterium bifidum in 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) acute colitis models. In this study, we further assessed the effects of several B. bifidum strains on colonic damage, fibrosis, inflammatory factors, intestinal microbial and metabolic profiles, and peripheral regulatory T cells (Tregs) in the context of TNBS chronic colitis in mice. These results indicated that B. bifidum FJSWX19M5, but not FXJWS17M4, ameliorated body weight loss, reduced colonic shortening and injury, decreased markers of gut inflammation, and rebalanced colonic metabolism in TNBS-treated mice. FJSWX19M5 supplementation also promoted Treg cell differentiation and intestinal barrier restoration compared to other strains. All living B. bifidum strains (FJSWX19M5, FXJWS17M4 and FHENJZ3M6) seemed to restore the disruption of the gut microbiota caused by TNBS. The co-culture of B. bifidum strains and mesenteric lymph node cells from TNBS-treated mice showed that those strains with anti-colitis could induce higher IL-10 levels and a lower ratio of IL-22/IL-10 and IL-17/IL-10 when compared to those strains that were not protective. Furthermore, heat-killed FJSWX19M5 exhibited a relief effect on colitis-related symptoms (including body weight loss, colonic shortening and injury). These data imply that specific B. bifidum strains or their lysates may be the current therapeutic alternatives for CD.

Abstract
The seeds from Gleditsia sinensis Lam., a common ecologically and economically useful tree, have high economic and nutritional value. The protective effect of polysaccharides from Gleditsia sinensis Lam. seeds (ZJMP) against dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis in mice was investigated in this study. ZJMP alleviated weight loss, reduced the disease activity index, prevented colon shortening, alleviated colonic tissue damage, and restored goblet cell secretion in colitic mice. Dietary ZJMP reduced proinflammatory cytokine overproduction in the colonic mucosa and serum, which was accompanied by suppression of NO levels and MPO and SOD activities. The addition of ZJMP increased the expression of Muc2 and tight junction proteins. Furthermore, dietary ZJMP partially reversed the alteration of gut microbiota in colitic mice by boosting the abundance of beneficial bacteria like Akkermansia, Lactobacillus, and Christensenella while lowering the abundance of harmful bacteria like Bacteroides, Prevotella, and Mucispirillum. Additionally, the decreased production of short-chain fatty acids in the colitic mice was recovered by ZJMP administration. The findings demonstrated the anti-inflammatory properties and mechanism of dietary ZJMP in the colon, which is essential for the sensible application of ZJMP in the prevention and amelioration of inflammation-related diseases as a nutritional supplement.

Abstract
Background and aim The etiopathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with different factors such as genetic, infectious, immunological, and environmental, including modification of the gut microbiota. IBD's conventional pharmacological therapeutic approaches have become a challenge due to side effects, complications from prolonged use, and higher costs. Kefir fermented milk beverage is a functional food that has demonstrated multiple beneficial effects including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. Alternative therapeutic strategies have been used for IBD as more natural products with low-cost and easy acquisition. The aim of this study is to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of kefir fermented milk beverage on sodium dextran sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis in rats. Methods We used 4 groups to perform this study: baseline control (BC), kefir control (KC), 5% untreated DSS-induced colitis (DSS), and 5% DSS-induced colitis treated with kefir (DSSK). The animals received fermented kefir milk beverage ad libitum for six days and the disease activity index was recorded daily. Colon samples were processed for Transmission Electron Microscopy and histopathological evaluation. We analyzed short fatty chain acids through the fecal sample using gas chromatography. Results Kefir supplementation was able to reduce the clinical activity index and inflammatory process evidenced by decreased neutrophil accumulation, decreased reticulum edema, and increased autophagosomes. Also, showed a trend to increase the levels of acetate and propionate. Conclusions Our results suggest that kefir fermented milk beverage may have an anti-inflammatory effect minimizing the intestinal damage of DSS-induced colitis.

Abstract
Rabdosia serra (R. serra), an important component of Chinese herbal tea, has traditionally been used to treat hepatitis, jaundice, cholecystitis, and colitis. However, the chemical composition of R. serra and its effect against colitis remain unclear. In this study, the chemical composition of the water extract of R. serra was analyzed using ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled with a hybrid linear ion trap quadrupole-orbitrap mass spectrometer (UPLC-LTQ-Orbitrap-MS). A total of 46 compounds, comprising ent-kaurane diterpenoids, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and steroids, were identified in the water extract of R. serra, and the extract could significantly alleviate dextran sulfate sodium salt-induced colitis by improving colon length, upregulating anti-inflammatory factors, downregulating proinflammatory factors, and restoring the balance of T helper 17/T regulatory cells. R. serra also preserved intestinal barrier function by increasing the level of tight junction proteins (zonula occludens 1 and occludin) in mouse colonic tissue. In addition, R. serra modulated the gut microbiota composition by increasing bacterial richness and diversity, increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria (Muribaculaceae, Bacteroides, Lactobacillus, and Prevotellaceae_UCG-001), and decreasing the abundance of pathogenic bacteria (Turicibacter, Eubacterium_fissicatena_group, and Eubacterium_xylanophilum_group). Gut microbiota depletion by antibiotics further confirmed that R. serra alleviated colitis in a microbiota-dependent manner. Overall, our findings provide chemical and biological evidence for the potential application of R. serra in the management of colitis.

Abstract
The very low-calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD) has been recognized as a promising dietary regimen for the treatment of several diseases. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced by anaerobic bacterial fermentation of indigestible dietary fibre in the gut have potential value for their underlying epigenetic role in the treatment of obesity and asthma-related inflammation through mediating the relationships between VLCKD and the infant gut microbiota. However, it is still unclear how VLCKD might influence gut microbiota composition in children, and how SCFAs could play a role in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). To overcome this knowledge gap, this review aims to investigate the role of SCFAs as key epigenetic metabolites that mediate VLCKD-gut microbiota relationships in children, and their therapeutic potential in IBD.

Abstract
Background:
Functional Gastrointestinal (GI) disease is a term that refers to a range
of disease conditions involving chronic diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation,
inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and lactose intolerance. Statistical reports have documented
>40% of the world's population is being afflicted by functional GI disorders. Consequences of
frequent intake of antibiotics include mortality of gut microflora, antibiotic-associated diarrhea,
the establishment of antibiotic resistance, and inference with healthy bodily functions. To
overcome the harms of antibiotics, studies are being conducted to determine the potential of
probiotics as alternatives to antibiotics.
Aim of Study:
The purpose of constructing this literature review is to outline the potential
attributes of Kefir and to assess the solitary efficiency of this beverage in the amelioration of GI
disease conditions.
Methodology:
Extraction of data entailed digging of literature hubs including PubMed, PubMed
Central, Research Gate, Science Direct, and Google Scholar, employing a different combination
of keywords to retrieve substantial details. Selection criteria of the articles involved the
published reports of preceding 10 years (2012-2021) that exhibited relevancy with the topic
Conclusion:
Kefir grains having different origins provide a distinct array of antimicrobial
spectrums and are found to be effective against different pathogens. IBDs, diarrheal sicknesses,
and constipation can be alleviated by the consumption of this beverage. Moreover, the probioticantibiotic combination is also essential for the mitigation of several diseases. The synergistic
impact of several microbial strains is vital for the treatment of celiac disease. Lactose maldigestion can be relieved by the consumption of kefir having β-galactosidase enzyme activity.

Abstract
The global prevalence of Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease is steadily increasing due to the aging population. The lack of effective drugs against these neurodegenerative disorders makes it imperative to identify new strategies for their prevention and treatment. Recent studies have revealed that harnessing the power of the gut microbiota through modification of diet may be a valuable approach for reducing the risk, modulating the symptoms, and ameliorating the pathophysiological aspects of neurodegenerative diseases. Consuming specific dietary components can alter the prevalence of bacterial communities within the gut to a healthy enterotype, which can influence the production of beneficial metabolites by microbiota. This article focuses on several dietary components, which have been demonstrated to affect the gut microbiota-brain axis and therefore could lead to attenuation of specific pathological processes in neurodegenerative diseases. Published evidence indicates that fermented foods, including kefir, and foods that are high in bioactive polyphenols and complex carbohydrates, such as grapes, pomegranates, and seaweed, may be effective at reducing neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, neurotransmitter dysfunction, and neuronal death associated with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Even though experimental evidence supporting the protective properties of the above dietary components in these diseases is emerging, it is evident that further human clinical studies are required to conclusively establish the benefits of any suggested dietary interventions. The translational potential of such research is illustrated by the clinical success of the recently developed Alzheimer's drug, GV-971, which is a seaweed derivative that works by modulating the gut microbiota-brain axis.

Abstract
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) mainly affecting the colon and the rectum. Its main characters are represented by relapsing and remitting mucosal inflammation, starting in the rectum and typically extending continuously proximally through part or the entire colon. UC pathogenesis depends on multiple factors, such as genetic predisposition, defects in the epithelial barrier, dysregulated immune responses, and environmental causes. The most frequent symptoms are abdominal pain, weight loss, mucus discharge, bloody diarrhoea, incontinence, nocturnal defecations, fever, and anemia. Existing therapies for UC include 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) and its derivatives, steroids, immunosuppressants and biological drugs. However, limited efficacy and unwanted adverse effects hardly limit these strategies of treatment. In the last decades, research studies have been driven towards complementary and alternative medicines for the treatment of UC. Various nutraceuticals have exhibited promising results in modulating intestinal inflammation meanwhile improving symptoms. These compounds possess a wide spectrum of positive health effects evidenced by in vitro studies, characterized by their involvement in antioxidant defenses, cell proliferation, and gene expression. The present review analyzes the available data about the different types of nutraceuticals and their potential effectiveness as adjuvant therapy of IBD, with particular emphasis to UC.

Abstract
Lentilactobacillus kefiri is one of the main lactic acid bacteria species in kefir and it was also isolated from other fermented foods. Numerous strains have been isolated and characterized regarding its potential as probiotics for the development of novel functional foods. To our knowledge this is the first review focused on highlighting safety aspects and health beneficial effects reported for L. kefiri strains. Several L. kefiri strains lack of transmissible antibiotic resistance genes, are tolerant to the harsh conditions of the gastrointestinal environment, and could resist different preservation procedures. Moreover, many of the isolated strains have shown antimicrobial activity against pathogens and their toxins, exhibited immunomodulatory activity as well as induced some beneficial effects at metabolic level. Regarding all the scientific evidence, certain L. kefiri strains emerge as excellent candidates to be applied to the development of both food supplements and new fermented foods with health-promoting properties. However, the availability of genomic information is still very limited, so much more work must be done in order to explore the potentiality of L. kefiri as a probiotic and a source of bioactive metabolites.

Abstract
Fermented dairy products are the good source of different species of live lactic acid bacteria (LAB), which are beneficial microbes well characterized for their health-promoting potential. Traditionally, dietary intake of fermented dairy foods has been related to different health-promoting benefits including antimicrobial activity and modulation of the immune system, among others. In recent years, emerging evidence suggests a contribution of dairy LAB in the prophylaxis and therapy of non-communicable diseases. Live bacterial cells or their metabolites can directly impact physiological responses and/or act as signalling molecules mediating more complex communications. This review provides up-to-date knowledge on the interactions between LAB isolated from dairy products (dairy LAB) and human health by discussing the concept of the food–gut-health axis. In particular, some bioactivities and probiotic potentials of dairy LAB have been provided on their involvement in the gut–brain axis and non-communicable diseases mainly focusing on their potential in the treatment of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, inflammatory bowel diseases, and cancer.
