The Accuracy of Cerenkov Photons Simulation in Geant4/Gate Depends on the Parameterization of Primary Electron Propagation

Predicting time-of-flight with Cerenkov light in BGO: a three-stage network approach with multiple timing kernels prior

Objective.In the quest for enhanced image quality in positron emission tomography (PET) reconstruction, the introduction of time-of-flight (TOF) constraints in TOF-PET reconstruction offers superior signal-to-noise ratio. By employing BGO detectors capable of simultaneously emitting prompt Cerenkov light and scintillation light, this approach combines the high time resolution of prompt photons with the high energy resolution of scintillation light, thereby presenting a promising avenue for acquiring more precise TOF information.Approach.In Stage One, we train a raw method capable of predicting TOF information based on coincidence waveform pairs. In Stage Two, the data is categorized into 25 classes based on signal rise time, and the pre-trained raw method is utilized to obtain TOF kernels for each of the 25 classes, thereby generating prior knowledge. Within Stage Three, our proposed deep learning (DL) module, combined with a bias fine-tuning module, utilizes the kernel prior to provide bias compensation values for the data, thereby refining the first-stage outputs and obtaining more accurate TOF predictions.Main results.The three-stage network built upon the LED method resulted in improvements of 11.7 ps and 41.8 ps for full width at half maximum (FWHM) and full width at tenth maximum (FWTM), respectively. Optimal performance was achieved with FWHM of 128.2 ps and FWTM of 286.6 ps when CNN and Transformer were utilized in Stages One and Three, respectively. Further enhancements of 2.3 ps and 3.5 ps for FWHM and FWTM were attained through data augmentation methods.Significance.This study employs neural networks to compensate for the timing delays in mixed (Cerenkov and scintillation photons) signals, combining multiple timing kernels as prior knowledge with DL models. This integration yields optimal predictive performance, offering a superior solution for TOF-PET research utilizing Cerenkov signals.

Pushing the limit of BGO-based dual-ended Cherenkov PET detectors through photon transit time correction

Objective. The high production cost of commonly used lutetium-based fast scintillators and the development of silicon photomultipliers technology have made bismuth germanate (BGO) a promising candidate for time-of-flight positron emission tomography (TOF PET) detectors owing to its generation of prompt Cherenkov photons. However, using BGO as a hybrid scintillator is disadvantageous owing to its low photon statistics and distribution that does not conform well to a single Gaussian. To mitigate this, a proposal was made to increase the likelihood of detecting the first Cherenkov photons by positioning two photosensors in opposition at the entrance and exit faces of the scintillator and subsequently selectively picking an earlier timestamp. Nonetheless, the timing variation arising from the photon transit time remains affected by the entire length of the crystal, thereby presenting a possibility for further enhancement.Approach. In this study, we aimed to improve the timing performance of the dual-ended BGO Cherenkov TOF PET detector by capitalizing on the synergistic advantages of applying depth-of-interaction (DOI) information and crystal surface finishes or reflector properties. A dual-ended BGO detector was implemented using a 3 × 3 × 15 mm3BGO crystal. Coincidence events were acquired against a 3 × 3 × 3 mm3LYSO:Ce:Mg reference detector. The timing performance of the dual-ended BGO detectors was analyzed using conventionally proposed timestamp methods before and after DOI correction.Results. Through a DOI-based correction of photon transit time spread, we demonstrated a further improvement in the timing resolution of the BGO-based Cherenkov TOF PET detector utilizing a dual-ended detector configuration and adaptive arrival time pickoff. We achieved further improvements in timing resolution by correcting the offset spread induced by the fluctuation of timing signal rise time in the dual-ended detector.Significance. Although polishing the crystal surface was still favorable in terms of full-width-half-maximum value, incorporating DOI information from the unpolished crystal to compensate for photon travel time facilitated additional enhancement in the overall timing performance, thereby surpassing that achieved with the polished crystal.

Colored reflectors to improve coincidence timing resolution of BGO-based time-of-flight PET detectors

Time-of-flight (TOF) positron emission tomography (PET) detectors improve the signal-to-noise ratio of PET images by limiting the position of the generation of two 511 keV gamma-rays in space using the arrival time difference between the two photons. Unfortunately, bismuth germanate (BGO), widely used in conventional PET detectors, was limited as a TOF PET scintillator due to the relatively slow decay time of the scintillation photons. However, prompt Cerenkov light in BGO has been identified in addition to scintillation photons. Using Cerenkov photons for timing has significantly improved the coincidence timing resolution (CTR) of BGO. Based on this, further research on improving the CTR for a BGO-based TOF PET system is being actively conducted. Wrapping materials for BGO pixels have primarily employed white reflectors to most efficiently collect scintillation light. White reflectors have customarily been used as reflectors for BGO pixels even after Cerenkov light began to be utilized for timing calculations in pixel-level experiments. However, when the arrival-time differences of the two 511 keV annihilations photons were measured with pure Cerenkov radiators, painting the lateral sides of the radiators black can improve CTR by suppressing the reflection of Cerenkov photons. The use of BGO for TOF PET detectors requires simultaneously minimizing scintillation loss for good energy information and suppressing reflected Cerenkov photons for better timing performance. Thus, reflectors for BGO pixels should be optimized for better timing and energy performance. In this study, colored polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tapes with discontinuous reflectance values at specific wavelengths were applied as a BGO reflector. We hypothesized that CTR could be enhanced by selectively suppressing reflected Cerenkov photons with an optimum colored reflector on the BGO pixel while minimizing scintillation photon loss. CTRs were investigated utilizing white and three colors (yellow, red, and green) PTFE tapes as a reflector. In addition, black-painted PTFE tape and enhanced specular reflector film were investigated as reference reflector materials. When 3 × 3 × 20 mm3BGO pixels were wrapped with the yellow PTFE reflector, the CTR was significantly improved to 365 ± 5 ps from 403 ± 14 ps measured with the conventional white PTFE reflector. Adequate energy information was still obtained with only 4.1% degradation in light collection compared to the white reflector. Colored reflectors show the possibility to further improve CTR for BGO pixels with optimum reflectance design.

Potential of Depth-of-Interaction-Based Detection Time Correction in Cherenkov Emitter Crystals for TOF-PET

Cherenkov light can improve the timing resolution of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) radiation detectors, thanks to its prompt emission. Coincidence time resolutions (CTR) of ~30 ps were recently reported when using 3.2 mm-thick Cherenkov emitters. However, sufficient detection efficiency requires thicker crystals, causing the timing resolution to be degraded by the optical propagation inside the crystal. We report on depth-of-interaction (DOI) correction to mitigate the time-jitter due to the photon time spread in Cherenkov-based radiation detectors. We simulated the Cherenkov and scintillation light generation and propagation in 3 × 3 mm2 lead fluoride, lutetium oxyorthosilicate, bismuth germanate, thallium chloride, and thallium bromide. Crystal thicknesses varied from 9 to 18 mm with a 3-mm step. A DOI-based time correction showed a 2-to-2.5-fold reduction of the photon time spread across all materials and thicknesses. Results showed that highly refractive crystals, though producing more Cherenkov photons, were limited by an experimentally obtained high-cutoff wavelength and refractive index, restricting the propagation and extraction of Cherenkov photons mainly emitted at shorter wavelengths. Correcting the detection time using DOI information shows a high potential to mitigate the photon time spread. These simulations highlight the complexity of Cherenkov-based detectors and the competing factors in improving timing resolution.

Effect of detector geometry and surface finish on Cerenkov based time estimation in monolithic BGO detectors

Objective.Time-of-flight positron emission tomography based on bismuth germanate (BGO) detectors is made possible due to fast emission of Cerenkov light. Only around 17 Cerenkov photons are produced per 511 keV photoelectric event, making high photon collection efficiency crucial for obtaining good time-of-flight capabilities. In this study, we investigate how different lateral and back surface finishes affect the photon collection efficiency and Cerenkov based timing performance in monolithic BGO.Approach.The study is performed using GATE for gamma and optical photon modeling, with surface reflections of photons simulated by the LUT Davis model. We compare for different detector configurations (regarding size and surface finishes) the photon collection efficiency, detection delays of the first few optical photons and coincidence time resolution estimations obtained by modeling the SiPM signals and performing leading edge discrimination. An additional comparison is made to LYSO scintillators and pixelated detectors.Main results.Although Cerenkov photon emission is directional, many high incidence angle Cerenkov photons are emitted due to electron scattering in the crystal. Substituting a polished back (photodetector side) surface for a rough surface increases the collection efficiency of these high angle of incidence photons. Results show that for a monolithic 50 × 50 × 12 mm³BGO detector with reflective side surfaces, this leads to an overall increase in photon collection efficiency of 34%. Cerenkov photon collection efficiency is also improved, resulting in a reduction of the photon detection delays (and the variation therein) of the first few optical photons. This leads to a better coincidence time resolution, primarily achieved by a shortening of the tails in the time-of-flight kernel, with an 18% reduction in full width at tenth maximum.Significance.This study shows the importance of the photon collection efficiency for timing performance in Cerenkov based monolithic detectors, and how it can be improved with different surface finishes.
