Hyperspectral Estimation Models of Winter Wheat Chlorophyll Content Under Elevated CO2

Hyperspectral Characteristics and SPAD Estimation of Wheat Leaves under CO2 Microleakage Stress

To non-destructively and rapidly monitor the chlorophyll content of winter wheat leaves under CO2 microleakage stress, and to establish the quantitative relationship between chlorophyll content and sensitive bands in the winter wheat growing season from 2023 to 2024, the leakage rate was set to 1 L/min, 3 L/min, 5 L/min, and 0 L/min through field experiments. The dimensional reduction was realized, fractional differential processing of a wheat canopy spectrum was carried out, a multiple linear regression (MLR) and partial least squares regression (PLSR) estimation model was constructed using a SPA selection band, and the model's accuracy was evaluated. The optimal model for hyperspectral estimation of wheat SPAD under CO2 microleakage stress was screened. The results show that the spectral curves of winter wheat leaves under CO2 microleakage stress showed a "red shift" of the green peak and a "blue shift" of the red edge. Compared with 1 L/min and 3 L/min, wheat leaves were more affected by CO2 at 5 L/min. Evaluation of the accuracy of the MLR and PLSR models shows that the MLR model is better, where the MLR estimation model based on 1.1, 1.8, 0.4, and 1.7 differential SPAD is the best for leakage rates of 1 L/min, 3 L/min, 5 L/min, and 0 L/min, with validation set R2 of 0.832, 0.760, 0.928, and 0.773, which are 11.528, 14.2, 17.048, and 37.3% higher than the raw spectra, respectively. This method can be used to estimate the chlorophyll content of winter wheat leaves under CO2 trace-leakage stress and to dynamically monitor CO2 trace-leakage stress in crops.

Combining canopy reflectance spectrometry and genome-wide prediction to increase response to selection for powdery mildew resistance in cultivated strawberry

High-throughput phenotyping is an emerging approach in plant science, but thus far only a few applications have been made in horticultural crop breeding. Remote sensing of leaf or canopy spectral reflectance can help breeders rapidly measure traits, increase selection accuracy, and thereby improve response to selection. In the present study, we evaluated the integration of spectral analysis of canopy reflectance and genomic information for the prediction of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) powdery mildew disease. Two multi-parental breeding populations of strawberry comprising a total of 340 and 464 pedigree-connected seedlings were evaluated in two separate seasons. A single-trait Bayesian prediction method using 1001 spectral wavebands in the ultraviolet-visible-near infrared region (350-1350 nm wavelength) combined with 8552 single nucleotide polymorphism markers showed up to 2-fold increase in predictive ability over models using markers alone. The integration of high-throughput phenotyping was further validated independently across years/trials with improved response to selection of up to 90%. We also conducted Bayesian multi-trait analysis using the estimated vegetative indices as secondary traits. Three vegetative indices (Datt3, REP_Li, and Vogelmann2) had high genetic correlations (rA) with powdery mildew visual ratings with average rA values of 0.76, 0.71, and 0.71, respectively. Increasing training population sizes by incorporating individuals with only vegetative index information yielded substantial increases in predictive ability. These results strongly indicate the use of vegetative indices as secondary traits for indirect selection. Overall, combining spectrometry and genome-wide prediction improved selection accuracy and response to selection for powdery mildew resistance, demonstrating the power of an integrated phenomics-genomics approach in strawberry breeding.

A Review of Hybrid Approaches for Quantitative Assessment of Crop Traits Using Optical Remote Sensing: Research Trends and Future Directions

Remote sensing technology allows to provide information about biochemical and biophysical crop traits and monitor their spatiotemporal dynamics of agriculture ecosystems. Among multiple retrieval techniques, hybrid approaches have been found to provide outstanding accuracy, for instance, for the inference of leaf area index (LAI), fractional vegetation cover (fCover), and leaf and canopy chlorophyll content (LCC and CCC). The combination of radiative transfer models (RTMs) and data-driven models creates an advantage in the use of hybrid methods. Through this review paper, we aim to provide state-of-the-art hybrid retrieval schemes and theoretical frameworks. To achieve this, we reviewed and systematically analyzed publications over the past 22 years. We identified two hybrid-based parametric and hybrid-based nonparametric regression models and evaluated their performance for each variable of interest. From the results of our extensive literature survey, most research directions are now moving towards combining RTM and machine learning (ML) methods in a symbiotic manner. In particular, the development of ML will open up new ways to integrate innovative approaches such as integrating shallow or deep neural networks with RTM using remote sensing data to reduce errors in crop trait estimations and improve control of crop growth conditions in very large areas serving precision agriculture applications.

Ganoderma lucidum is a traditional Chinese healthy food with many kinds of nutritious activities, and polysaccharide is one of its main active components. Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharide plays a vital role in improving human immunity and anti-oxidation. At present, the methods of detecting polysaccharide content of Ganoderma lucidum are destructive, and the steps are complicated and time-consuming. This study aims to explore the possibility of using hyperspectral imaging (HSI) to predict polysaccharide content in a nondestructive way during the growth of Ganoderma lucidum. The partial least square regression (PLSR) model shows good performance for Ganoderma lucidum (Rp2 = 0.924, RPDp = 3.622) with pretreatment method of Savitzky-Golay (SG) and standard normal variate (SNV), and feature selection method of successive projections algorithm (SPA). This study indicates that HSI can quickly and nondestructive detect the polysaccharide content of Ganoderma lucidum, provide guidance for the cultivation industry and improve the economic benefits of Ganoderma lucidum.
