Molecular and Biochemical Insights Into Early Responses of Hemp to Cd and Zn Exposure and the Potential Effect of Si on Stress Response

Phytobial remediation advances and application of omics and artificial intelligence: a review

Industrialization and urbanization increased the use of chemicals in agriculture, vehicular emissions, etc., and spoiled all environmental sectors. It causes various problems among living beings at multiple levels and concentrations. Phytoremediation and microbial association are emerging as a potential method for removing heavy metals and other contaminants from soil. The treatment uses plant physiology and metabolism to remove or clean up various soil contaminants efficiently. In recent years, omics and artificial intelligence have been seen as powerful techniques for phytobial remediation. Recently, AI and modeling are used to analyze large data generated by omics technologies. Machine learning algorithms can be used to develop predictive models that can help guide the selection of the most appropriate plant and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria combination that is most effective at remediation. In this review, emphasis is given to the phytoremediation techniques being explored worldwide in soil contamination.

Unveiling silicon-mediated cadmium tolerance mechanisms in mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek): Integrative insights from gene expression, antioxidant responses, and metabolomics

Cadmium (Cd), one of the most phytotoxic heavy metals, is a major contributor to yield losses in several crops. Silicon (Si) is recognized for its vital role in mitigating Cd toxicity, however, the specific mechanisms governing this mitigation process are still not fully understood. In the present study, the effect of Si supplementation on mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek) plants grown under Cd stress was investigated to unveil the intricate pathways defining Si derived stress tolerance. Non-invasive leaf imaging technique revealed improved growth, biomass, and photosynthetic efficiency in Si supplemented mungbean plants under Cd stress. Further, physiological and biochemical analysis revealed Si mediated increase in activity of glutathione reductase (GR), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and catalase (CAT) enzymes involved in reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism leading to mitigation of cellular damage and oxidative stress. Untargeted metabolomic analysis using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) provided insights into Si mediated changes in metabolites and their respective pathways under Cd stress. Alteration in five different metabolic pathways with major changes in flavanols and flavonoids biosynthesis pathway which is essential for controlling plants antioxidant defense system and oxidative stress management were observed. The information reported here about the effects of Si on photosynthetic efficiency, antioxidant responses, and metabolic changes will be helpful in understanding the Si-mediated resistance to Cd stress in plants.

Methyl jasmonate and selenium synergistically mitigative cadmium toxicity in hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) plants by improving antioxidase activities and reducing Cd accumulation

Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) or selenium (Se)-mediated response to cadmium (Cd) stress in plant has been widely reported, but the combined effects both on plant growth in response to Cd stress and the underlying mechanisms remain obscure. Here, we showed the combined effects of MeJA (2.5 μM) and Se (7 μM) on hot pepper growth under Cd stress (CdCl₂, 5 μM). The results showed Cd suppressed the accumulation of total chlorophyll and carotenoid and reduced the photosynthesis, while it increased the content of endogenous signaling molecules, e.g. nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), as well as Cd content in leaves. The combined application of MeJA and Se significantly decreased the malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulation and improved the activities of antioxidant enzymes (AOEs, e.g. SOD and CAT) and defense-related enzymes (DREs, POD and PAL). Additionally, the synergistic application of MeJA and Se also obviously improved photosynthesis in hot pepper plants under Cd stress compared with those treated with MeJA or Se respectively or not. Moreover, the treatment of MeJA associated with Se also effectively reduced the Cd accumulation in hot pepper leaves under Cd stress compared with the plants treated with MeJA or Se separately, which implied a potentially synergistic role of MeJA and Se in alleviating Cd toxicity in hot pepper plants. This study provides a theoretical reference for the further analysis of the molecular mechanism of MeJA and Se in jointly mediating the response to heavy metals in plants.

Impact of Pseudomonas sp. SVB-B33 on Stress- and Cell Wall-Related Genes in Roots and Leaves of Hemp under Salinity

Salinity is a type of abiotic stress that negatively affects plant growth and development. Textile hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is an important multi-purpose crop that shows sensitivity to salt stress in a genotype- and developmental stage-dependent manner. The root and shoot biomasses decrease in the presence of NaCl during vegetative growth and several stress-responsive genes are activated. Finding environmentally friendly ways to increase plant health and resilience to exogenous stresses is important for a sustainable agriculture. In this context, the use of beneficial bacteria, collectively referred to as plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB), is becoming an attractive and emergent agricultural strategy. In this study, data are provided on the effects of a Pseudomonas isolate (Pseudomonas sp. SVB-B33) phylogenetically closely related to P. psychrotolerans applied via roots to salt-stressed hemp. The application of both living and dead bacteria impacts the fresh weight of the root biomass, as well as the expression of several stress-related genes in roots and leaves. These results pave the way to future investigations on the use of Pseudomonas sp. SVB-B33 in combination with silica to mitigate stress symptoms and increase the resilience to other forms of exogenous stresses in textile hemp.
