Enzymatic Fibre Modification During Production of Dissolving Wood Pulp for Regenerated Cellulosic Materials

Wood cellulose films with different foldabilities triggered by dissolution and regeneration from concentrated H2SO4 and NaOH/urea aqueous solutions

Forests are a major source of wealth for Canadians, and cellulose makes up the "skeleton" of wood fibers. Concentrated H2SO4 and NaOH/urea aqueous solutions are two efficient solvents that can rapidly dissolve cellulose. Our preliminary experiment obtained regenerated wood cellulose films with different mechanical properties from these two solvents. Therefore, herein, we aim to investigate the effects of aqueous solvents on the structure and properties of wood cellulose films. Regenerated cellulose (RC) films were produced by dissolving wood cellulose in either 64 wt% H2SO4 solution (RC-H4) or NaOH/urea aqueous solution (RC-N4). RC-H4 showed the higher tensile strength (109.78 ± 2.14 MPa), better folding endurance (20-28 times), and higher torsion angle (42°) than RC-N4 (62.90 ± 2.27 MPa, un-foldable, and 12°). The increased cellulose contents in the H2SO4 solutions from 3 to 5 wt% resulted in an improved tensile strength from 102.61 ± 1.99 to 132.93 ± 5.64 MPa and did not affect the foldability. RC-H4 also exhibited better water vapor barrier property (1.52 ± 0.04 × 10-7 g m-1 h-1 Pa-1), superior transparency (~90 % transmittance at 800 nm), but lower thermal stability compared to RC-N4. This work provides special insights into the regenerated wood cellulose from two aqueous solvents and is expected to facilitate the development of high-performance RC films from abundant forestry resources.

Xylanase treatment of eucalypt kraft pulps: effect of carryover

The influence of pulp carryover on the efficiency of the xylanase (X) treatment of industrial unbleached and oxygen-delignified eucalypt kraft pulps (A1 and A2 pulps, with kappa number (KN) values of 16 and 10, respectively), collected at the same pulp mill, was studied regarding the consumption of bleaching chemicals and pulp bleachability. Another non-oxygen-delignified eucalyptus kraft pulp of KN 13 was received after the extended cooking from a different pulp mill (pulp B). The assays were performed with both lab-washed (carryover-free) and unwashed (carryover-rich) pulps. Both lab-washed and unwashed pulps with carryover were subjected to X treatment, the former being demonstrating considerably higher ClO2 savings than the pulps containing carryover. The savings of bleaching reagents were higher when the X stage was applied to the A1 pulp than to the A2 pulp. This advantage of A1 pulp, however, was not confirmed when using unwashed pulps. In contrast, the gains obtained from the X treatment of unwashed pulp A2 were practically as high as those observed for the lab-washed A2 pulp. Furthermore, a similar effect in X stage was recorded for unwashed pulps having close KN: oxygen-delignified A2 pulp and non-oxygen-delignified B pulp. The results suggest that pulp carryover and initial pH were the key factors relating to the effectiveness of X treatment. The application of X treatment to the A2 unwashed pulp (after the oxygen stage) not only saved 20% of the ClO2 and 10% of the sodium hydroxide, but also improved the brightness stability of the bleached pulp without affecting its papermaking properties. Alkalization of Kraft Pulps from Pine and Eucalyptus and Its Effect on Enzymatic Saccharification and Viscosity Control of Cellulose

Bleached kraft pulps from eucalyptus and pine were subjected to cold caustic extraction (CCE) with NaOH (5, 10, 17.5, and 35%) for hemicelluloses removal and to increase cellulose accessibility. The effect of these changes was evaluated in enzymatic saccharification with the multicomponent Cellic CTec3 enzyme cocktail, and in viscosity reduction of pulps with the monocomponent Trichoderma reesei endoglucanase (EG). After CCE with 10% NaOH (CCE10) and 17.5% NaOH (CCE17.5), hemicellulose content lower than 1% was achieved in eucalyptus and pine pulps, respectively. At these concentrations, cellulose I started to be converted into cellulose II. NaOH concentrations higher than 17.5% decreased the intrinsic viscosity (from 730 to 420 mL/g in eucalyptus and from 510 to 410 mL/g in pine). Cellulose crystallinity was reduced from 60% to 44% in eucalyptus and from 71% to 44% in pine, as the NaOH concentration increased. Enzymatic multicomponent saccharification showed higher glucose yields in all CCE-treated eucalyptus samples (up to 93%) while only CCE17.5 and CCE35 pine pulps achieved 90% after 40 h of incubation. Untreated bleached pulps of both species presented saccharification yields lower than 70%. When monocomponent EG was used to treat the same pulps, depending on enzyme charge and incubation time, a wide range of intrinsic viscosity reduction was obtained (up to 74%). Results showed that eucalyptus pulps are more accessible and easier to hydrolyze by enzymes than pine pulps and that the conversion of cellulose I to cellulose II hydrate only has the effect of increasing saccharification of CCE pine samples. Viscosity reduction of CCE pulps and EG treated pulps were obtained in a wide range indicating that pulps presented characteristics suitable for cellulose derivatives production.
