Abstract
Safranal is a free radical scavenger and useful as an antioxidant molecule; however, its promotive role in soybean is not explored. Salt stress decreased soybean growth and safranal improved it even if under salt stress. To study the positive mechanism of safranal on soybean growth, a proteomic approach was used. According to functional categorization, oppositely changed proteins were further confirmed using biochemical techniques. Actin and calcium-dependent protein kinase decreased in soybean root and hypocotyl, respectively, under salt stress and increased with safranal application. Xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/ hydrolase increased in soybean root under salt stress but decreased with safranal application. Peroxidase increased under salt stress and further enhanced by safranal application in soybean root. Actin, RuvB-like helicase, and protein kinase domain-containing protein were upregulated under salt stress and further enhanced by safranal application under salt stress. Dynamin GTPase was downregulated under salt stress but recovered with safranal application under salt stress. Glutathione peroxidase and PfkB domain-containing protein were upregulated by safranal application under salt stress in soybean root. These results suggest that safranal improves soybean growth through the regulation of cell wall and nuclear proteins along with reactive‑oxygen species scavenging system. Furthermore, it might promote salt-stress tolerance through the regulation of membrane proteins involved in endocytosis and post-Golgi trafficking. Abstract
The use of coumarin (COU) to alleviate the phytotoxic effects of salinity has great potential in improving the phytoremediation of saline and alkaline soils. 30-day bitter gourd plants were exposed to 15 dS m‒1 salinity of neutral (NaCl and Na2SO4) and alkaline (Na2CO3 and NaHCO3) salts. 60-day plants were harvested to record different growth, physiological and biochemical attributes. Salinity significantly subsided plant growth, chlorophyll, photosynthesis, and nutrient acquisition. Salinity induced notable oxidative damage in plants that displayed higher relative membrane permeability (RMP), accumulated elevated ROS (H2O2 and O2•‒) and MDA levels alongside intensified lipoxygenase (LOX) activity. The production of cytotoxic methylglyoxal was also significantly higher in plants under salinity. COU seed priming (50, 100 and 150 mg L‒1) promoted plant growth by circumventing oxidative injury and intensifying oxidative defense. Further, COU maintained the intricate balance between reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) glutathione to diminish ion excess toxicity, thereby facilitating the phytoremediation of saline soils. The lower doses of COU promoted methylglyoxal and ROS detoxification systems that, in turn, lessened the phytotoxic effects of salinity. COU restored ions homeostasis by augmenting osmotic adjustment in plants under salinity.

Abstract
Moringa oleifera is a rich source of polyphenols whose contents and profile may vary according to environmental conditions, harvest season, and plant tissue. The present study aimed to characterize the profile of phenolic compounds in different tissues of M. oleifera grown under different temperatures (25, 30, and 35 °C), using HPLC/MS, as well as their constituent phytochemicals and in vitro antioxidant activities. The in vitro antioxidant activity of the extracts was evaluated using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylenebenzothiozoline-6-sulfonicacid (ABTS), and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) methods. The polyphenolic compounds were mainly found in the leaves at 30 °C. UPLC/QTOF-MS allowed for the identification of 34 polyphenolic components in seedlings, primarily consisting of glucosides, phenols, flavonoids, and methoxy flavones. At 30 °C, the specific activities of antioxidative enzymes were the highest in leaves, followed by seedlings and then seeds. The leaf and seed extracts also exhibited a greater accumulation of proline, glycine betaine, and antioxidants, such as ascorbic acid, and carotenoids, as measured by the inhibition of ROS production. We found that changes in the expression levels of the validated candidate genes Cu/Zn-SOD, APX, GPP, and TPS lead to significant differences in the germination rate and biochemical changes. These findings demonstrate that M. oleifera plants have high concentrations of phytochemicals and antioxidants, making them an excellent choice for further research to determine their use as health-promoting dietary supplements.

Salinity stress improves antioxidant potential by modulating physio-biochemical responses in Moringa oleifera Lam. Sci Rep 2023; 13:2895. Abstract
Moringa oleifera Lam. is a common edible plant, famous for several nutritional and therapeutic benefits. This study investigates the salt -induced modulations in plant growth, physio-biochemical responses, and antioxidant performance of M. oleifera grown under 0, 50, and 100 mM NaCl concentrations. Results showed that the plant effectively managed moderate salinity (50 mM NaCl) by maintaining succulence, weight ratios, and biomass allocation patterns of both shoot and root with minimal reduction in dry biomass. However, high salinity (100 mM NaCl) remarkably declined all growth parameters. The plant accumulated more Na+ and Cl-, while less K+ under salinity as compared to the control. Consequently, osmotic potentials of both root and leaf decreased under salinity, which was corroborated by the high amount of proline and soluble sugars. Increased level of H2O2 with significantly unchanged membrane fluidity indicating its role in perceiving and managing stress at moderate salinity. In addition, increased activities of superoxide dismutase, and catalase, with increased glutathione and flavonoid contents suggest an integrated participation of both enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant components in regulating ROS. On the other hand, high salinity caused an outburst of ROS indicated by high H2O2, MDA, and electrolyte leakage. As a response, moringa drastically increased the activities of all antioxidant enzymes and contents of antioxidant molecules including ascorbic acid, glutathione, total phenols, and flavonoids with high radical scavenging and reducing power capacities. However, a considerable amount of energy was used in such management resulting in a significant growth reduction at 100 mM NaCl. This study suggests that moringa effectively resisted moderate salinity by modulating physio-biochemical attributes and effectively managing ion toxicity and oxidative stress. Salt stress also enhanced the medicinal potentials of moringa by increasing the contents of antioxidant compounds including ascorbic acid, glutathione, total phenols, and flavonoids and their resulting activities. It can be grown on degraded/ saline lands and biomass of this plant can be used for edible and medicinal purposes, besides providing other benefits in a global climate change scenario.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Salinization is major abiotic stress limiting cotton production. Melatonin (MT) has been implicated in salt stress tolerance in multiple crops including upland cotton. Here, we explored the transcriptomic and metabolomic response of a salt-tolerant self-bred high-yielding cotton line SDS-01, which was exogenously sprayed with four MT concentrations (50, 100, 200, and 500 μM). RESULTS Here we found that MT improves plant biomass and growth under salt stress. The combined transcriptome sequencing and metabolome profiling approach revealed that photosynthetic efficiency is improved by increasing the expressions of chlorophyll metabolism and antenna proteins in MT-treated seedlings. Additionally, linoleic acid and flavonoid biosynthesis were improved after MT treatment. The Na+/K+ homeostasis-related genes were increasingly expressed in salt-stressed seedlings treated with MT as compared to the ones experiencing only salt stress. Melatonin treatment activated a cascade of plant-hormone signal transduction and reactive oxygen scavenging genes to alleviate the detrimental effects of salt stress. The global metabolome profile revealed an increased accumulation of flavonoids, organic acids, amino acids and derivatives, saccharides, and phenolic acids in MT-treated seedlings. Interestingly, N, N'-Diferuloylputrescine a known antioxidative compound was highly accumulated after MT treatment. CONCLUSION Collectively, our study concludes that MT is a salt stress regulator in upland cotton and alleviates salt-stress effects by modulating the expressions of photosynthesis (and related pathways), flavonoid, ROS scavenging, hormone signaling, linoleic acid metabolism, and ion homeostasis-related genes.
