Plant responses to climate change, how global warming may impact on food security: a critical review

Response of solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence-based spatial and temporal evolution of vegetation in Xinjiang to multiscale drought

Climate change and human activities have increased droughts, especially overgrazing and deforestation, which seriously threaten the balance of terrestrial ecosystems. The ecological carrying capacity and vegetation cover in the arid zone of Xinjiang, China, are generally low, necessitating research on vegetation response to drought in such arid regions. In this study, we analyzed the spatial and temporal characteristics of drought in Xinjiang from 2001 to 2020 and revealed the response mechanism of SIF to multi-timescale drought in different vegetation types using standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI), solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) data. We employed trend analysis, standardized anomaly index (SAI), Pearson correlation, and trend prediction techniques. Our investigation focused on the correlations between GOSIF (a new SIF product based on the Global Orbital Carbon Observatory-2), NDVI, and EVI with SPEI12 for different vegetation types over the past two decades. Additionally, we examined the sensitivities of vegetation GOSIF to various scales of SPEI in a typical drought year and predicted future drought trends in Xinjiang. The results revealed that the spatial distribution characteristics of GOSIF, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) were consistent, with mean correlations with SPEI at 0.197, 0.156, and 0.128, respectively. GOSIF exhibited the strongest correlation with SPEI, reflecting the impact of drought stress on vegetation photosynthesis. Therefore, GOSIF proves advantageous for drought monitoring purposes. Most vegetation types showed a robust response of GOSIF to SPEI at a 9-month scale during a typical drought year, with grassland GOSIF being particularly sensitive to drought. Our trend predictions indicate a decreasing trend in GOSIF vegetation in Xinjiang, coupled with an increasing trend in drought. This study found that compared with that of the traditional greenness vegetation index, GOSIF has obvious advantages in monitoring drought in the arid zone of Xinjiang. Furthermore, it makes up for the lack of research on the mechanism of vegetation GOSIF response to drought on multiple timescales in the arid zone. These results provide strong theoretical support for investigating the monitoring, assessment, and prediction of vegetation response to drought in Xinjiang, which is vital for comprehending the mechanisms of carbon and water cycles in terrestrial ecosystems.

Unveiling physiological responses and modulated accumulation patterns of specialized metabolites in Mentha rotundifolia acclimated to sub-tropical environment

Mints are aromatic plants of Lamiaceae, globally known for the phytochemical-rich essential oils. Most of the cultivated mints are menthol-rich, whereas spearmint being the only dominant carvone-rich species. In this study, another carvone-rich mint Mentha rotundifolia (L.) Huds., a native of temperate region was assessed for its acclimation in sub-tropical environment to see any possible changes in specialized metabolite accumulation. Plants grown under open environment was compared with glasshouse grown plants where, temperature, humidity and photoperiods were uniformly maintained. Thickened leaves with increased cuticular wax load (2.82 folds) and anthocyanin accumulation (202.97 µg/g) in the widened stems were observed in plants grown in open environment, while higher chlorophyll contents were exhibited by the glasshouse-grown plants. Enhanced antioxidant capacity in open environment, correlated with elevated concentration (86.4% increase for caffeic acid) of wall-bound phenolics was observed. Increased proline, hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde contents in open environment indicated the plant's ability to cope up with abiotic stress. Higher amounts of terpenes like (-)-carvone (2.68 folds) and D-limonene (1.35 folds) were found in both internal volatile pool and essential oil of glasshouse-grown plants. Histochemical study of glandular trichomes also supported this finding. In conclusion, glasshouse-grown plants showed relatively better growth and higher terpene contents, nevertheless the plant survived well in warmer environment, with increased antioxidant capacities and phenolic contents. Future study includes mass propagation of this species in different geographical locations with distinct climatic variations to determine the suitable sub-tropical locations for cultivation as a potential alternative to spearmint for commercial-scale (-)-carvone production.

A transition from enemies to allies: how viruses improve drought resilience in plants

Global crop production is severely affected by environmental factors such as drought, salinity, cold, flood etc. Among these stresses, drought is one of the major abiotic stresses reducing crop productivity. It is expected that drought conditions will further increase because of the increasing global temperature. In general, viruses are seen as a pathogen affecting the crop productivity. However, several researches are showing that viruses can induce drought tolerance in plants. This review explores the mechanisms underlying the interplay between viral infections and the drought response mechanisms in plants. We tried to address the molecular pathways and physiological changes induced by viruses that confer drought tolerance, including alterations in hormone signaling, antioxidant defenses, scavenging the reactive oxygen species, role of RNA silencing and miRNA pathway, change in the expression of several genes including heat shock proteins, cellulose synthase etc. Furthermore, we discuss various viruses implicated in providing drought tolerance and examine the range of plant species exhibiting this phenomenon. By applying current knowledge and identifying gaps in understanding, this review aims to provide valuable insights into the complex dynamics of virus-induced drought tolerance in plants, paving the way for future research directions and practical applications in sustainable agriculture.

Identification and characterization of the RcTCP gene family and its expression in response to abiotic stresses in castor bean

BACKGROUND

The TCP (teosinte branched1/cincinnata/proliferating cell factor) family plays a prominent role in plant development and stress responses. However, TCP family genes have thus far not been identified in castor bean, and therefore an understanding of the expression and functional aspects of castor bean TCP genes is lacking. To identify the potential biological functions of castor bean (RcTCP) TCP members, the composition of RcTCP family members, their basic physicochemical properties, subcellular localizations, interacting proteins, miRNA target sites, and gene expression patterns under stress were assessed.

RESULTS

The presence of 20 RcTCP genes on the nine chromosomes of castor bean was identified, all of which possess TCP domains. Phylogenetic analysis indicated a close relationship between RcTCP genes and Arabidopsis AtTCP genes, suggesting potential functional similarity. Subcellular localization experiments confirmed that RcTC01/02/03/10/16/18 are all localized in the nucleus. Protein interaction analysis revealed that the interaction quantity of RcTCP03/06/11 proteins is the highest, indicating a cascade response in the functional genes. Furthermore, it was found that the promoter region of RcTCP genes contains a large number of stress-responsive elements and hormone-induced elements, indicating a potential link between RcTCP genes and stress response functions. qRT-PCR showed that all RcTCP genes exhibit a distinct tissue-specific expression pattern and their expression is induced by abiotic stress (including low temperature, abscisic acid, drought, and high salt). Among them, RcTCP01/03/04/08/09/10/14/15/18/19 genes may be excellent stress-responsive genes.

CONCLUSION

We discovered that RcTCP genes play a crucial role in various activities, including growth and development, the stress response, and transcription. This study provides a basis for studying the function of RcTCP gene in castor.
