Lighting direction and visual field modulate perceived intensity of illumination

Anisotropy in the peripheral visual field based on pupil response to the glare illusion

Visual-field (VF) anisotropy has been investigated in terms of spatial resolution of attention, spatial frequency, and semantic processing. Brightness perception has also been reported to vary between VFs. However, the influence of VF anisotropy on brightness perception using pupillometry has not been investigated. The present study measured participants' pupil size during glare illusion, in which converging luminance gradients evoke brightness enhancement and a glowing impression on the central white area of the stimulus, and halo stimuli, in which the same physical brightness of the glare illusion is used with a diverging luminance pattern. The results revealed greater stimulus-evoked pupillary dilation and glare-related dilated pupil reduction in the upper VF (UVF) compared with other VFs and halo-related pupillary changes, respectively. The stimulus-evoked pupillary dilation was affected by poor contrast sensitivity. However, owing to the superior cognitive bias formed by statistical regularity in natural scene processing of the glare illusion in the UVF, we found reduced pupillary dilation compared with the response to halo stimuli and the response from other VFs. These findings offer valuable insight into a method to reduce the potential glare effect of any VF anisotropy induced by the glare effect experienced in daily vision. An important practical implication of our study may be in informing the design of applications aimed at improving nighttime driving behavior. We also believe that our study makes a significant contribution to the literature because it offers valuable insights on VF anisotropy using evidence from pupillometry and the glare illusion.

Lateral biases in aesthetic and spatial location judgments: differences between tasks and native reading directions

People exhibit consistent leftward spatial biases across a variety of tasks. However, individuals with a native reading direction other than left-to-right (LTR) show an attenuation of the leftward bias. The current study used procedurally similar tasks to examine spatial ability and aesthetic preferences in LTR and right-to-left (RTL) groups. In the spatial task participants viewed a centred rectangle partially occluded by an overlapping circle and estimated the centre of the circle with a single mouse click. In the aesthetic task participants used the mouse to control a "virtual flashlight" to light images of abstract paintings in the most aesthetically pleasing way. Contrary to predictions, smaller errors were made for circles on the right and estimations were progressively less accurate as circle size increased in the spatial task. On the aesthetic task, light placements of LTR participants were biased to the left and significantly different from the slightly rightward placements of RTL participants. As predicted, when completing the aesthetics task amounts of time scanning left or right visual space were different between groups. Findings support the theory that directional scanning biases attenuate leftward lateral biases and further, the nature of the visuospatial task may vary the strength of lateral bias.

Representational pseudoneglect for detecting changes to Rey-Osterrieth figures

When dividing attention between the left and right sides of physical space, most individuals pay slightly more attention to the left side. This phenomenon, known as pseudoneglect, may also occur for the left and right sides of mental representations of stimuli. Representational pseudoneglect has been shown for the recall of real-world scenes and for simple, briefly presented stimuli. The current study sought to investigate the effect of exposure duration and complexity using adaptations of the Rey-Osterrieth figures. Undergraduates (n = 97) were shown a stimulus for 20 s and asked to remember it. Participants were then shown a probe and indicated whether it was the same or different. Results showed that, irrespective of whether an element was added or subtracted, changes on the left side of the remembered image were better detected. These results are consistent with representational pseudoneglect and demonstrate that this effect occurs for complex stimuli when presented for an extended period of time. Representation neglect is therefore unlikely to be the result of an initial saccade to the left-but could be related to the formation or recall of the representation.

The thinker: opposing directionality of lighting bias within sculptural artwork

Individuals tend to perceive the direction of light to come from above and slightly from the left; it has been speculated that this phenomenon is also producing similar lighting preferences within 2-dimensional artworks (e.g., paintings, advertisements). The purpose of the present study was to address if lighting bias was present in the 3-dimensional medium of sculpture by implementing a virtual art gallery lighting paradigm. Thirty-nine participants completed a computer task that consisted of 48 galleries each containing one sculpture (24 original sculptures, 24 mirror-reversed) which was surrounded by eight lights (above/below, left/right, front/back). Participants would select one light source to illuminate the sculpture in a manner they perceived to be the most aesthetically pleasing. The results indicated a significant preference for lights positioned from above and from the right, a finding that is contradictory to previous lighting bias research examining artworks. An interpretation for the rightward bias applies the perceptual concept of subjective lighting equality. Objects illuminated from the left typically appear brighter in comparison to right-side lighting; in sculpture, however, increased luminosity can reduce the sculptural detail, and may have been compensated via right-side lighting choices within the lighting task.

Luminance gradient configuration determines perceived lightness in a simple geometric illusion

Accurate perception of surface reflectance poses a significant computational problem for the visual system. The amount of light reflected by a surface is affected by a combination of factors including the surface's reflectance properties and illumination conditions. The latter are not limited by the strength of the illuminant but also include the relative placement of the light illuminating the surface, the orientation of the surface and its 3d shape, all of which result in a pattern of luminance gradients across the surface. In this study we explore how luminance gradients contribute to lightness perception. We introduce a novel, simple lightness illusion. It consists of six separate checks, organized in rows of two. Each check has a negative luminance gradient across it. The top and the bottom rows are the same: with the darker check on the left, and the lighter check on the right. Two checks in the middle row are identical; however, the check on the right appears darker than the check on the left. As there are no shared borders between the checks, simultaneous contrast cannot explain the effect. However, there are multiple possible explanations including spatial filtering (Blakeslee and McCourt, 2004) or some higher-order mechanism such as perceptual grouping or amodal completion. Here, we explore these possibilities by manipulating the luminance configurations and the gradient slopes of the checks.
