Neural Plastic Effects of Working Memory Training Influenced by Self-perceived Stress in Stroke: A Case Illustration

Rehabilitation of working memory after acquired brain injury and multiple sclerosis: A systematic review

The objective is to study the effectiveness of working memory (WM) rehabilitation after Acquired brain injury (ABI) and multiple sclerosis (MS). A systematic database search of published studies, following PRISMA recommendations, with assessment of methodological quality and risk of bias, was conducted. The results were analysed according to the rehabilitation method used. 31 studies (including 14 class I) were included, and 11 different training programs were identified. Despite great variability in training methodology and outcome measures, the results were positive overall. However, only three rehabilitation programs showed a transfer effect to WM (near) and daily life with long-term maintenance. The results were more variable for protocols limited to the use of computerized n-back training tasks. Overall, the current evidence supports multi-task WM training rather than single-task-limited program. It also supports early and long duration training, with some therapist support. However, it is not possible, to date, to make strong recommendations regarding the rehabilitation program to be used preferentially. Although results are encouraging, level of evidence remains modest, particularly regarding the maintenance of the therapeutic effect after the end of training, and the transfer to everyday life skills. The influence of rehabilitation parameters (training duration, therapist involvement … ) remains difficult to assess.

Utility of a novel tablet computer software for memory impairment in participants with brain injuries: A randomized control trial

This study examined the effectiveness of a novel information and communication technology (ICT) tool developed for external memory compensation to improve memory function in participants with brain injuries. In this 3-month randomized control study, participants with memory impairment secondary to brain injury were randomly assigned on a 1:1 basis to either intervention (the ICT tool [ARATA]) or 3-month waitlist control groups. This study's primary outcome measure was memory-related difficulties in everyday life, assessed using the Everyday Memory Checklist (EMC). Secondary outcomes included tests for memory function and psychosocial status, all of which were administered by blinded assessors. Seventy-eight participants (53 males, 25 females; mean age, 43.5 ± 12.7 [SD] years) were enrolled and 39 participants were allocated to each group (intervention and control). There was no significant difference in EMC scores between the two groups throughout the study (mean 0.26; 95% CI: -2.55-3.07; p=0.853); however, the intervention group scored significantly higher on the Rivermead Behavioural Memory and General Self-Efficacy tests compared to the control group. While the ICT tool did not improve the primary study outcome, evidence suggests that the ICT tool can improve memory functions related to activities of daily living.

WOME: Theory-Based Working Memory Training - A Placebo-Controlled, Double-Blind Evaluation in Older Adults

Background: Scientifically evaluated cognitive intervention programs are essential to meet the demands of our increasingly aging society. Currently, one of the “hottest” topics in the field is the improvement of working memory function and its potential impact on overall cognition. The present study evaluated the efficacy of WOME (WOrking MEmory), a theory-based working memory training program, in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, and randomized controlled trial (www.drks.de, DRKS00013162).

Methods:N = 60 healthy older adults were allocated to (1) the WOME intervention, (2) an active low-level intervention, or (3) a passive control group. Overall, the intervention groups practiced twelve sessions of 45 min within 4 weeks of their respective training. Transfer effects were measured via an extensive battery of neuropsychological tests and questionnaires both pre-/post-training and at a 3-month follow-up.

Results:WOME led to a significant improvement in working memory function, demonstrated on a non-trained near transfer task and on two different composite scores with moderate to large effect sizes. In addition, we found some indication of relevant impact on everyday life. The effects were short-term rather than stable, being substantially diminished at follow-up with only little evidence suggesting long-term maintenance. No transfer effects on other cognitive functions were observed.

Conclusion:WOME is an appropriate and efficient intervention specifically targeting the working memory system in healthy older adults.
