Interactivity: A Potential Determinant of Learning by Preparing to Teach and Teaching

Learning by teaching efficiently enhances learning outcomes in molecular biology of the cell course

To evaluate the impact of active learning approaches in a basic molecular and cell biology course for undergraduate students, we assessed the effect of learning by teaching and peer review on the learning outcomes. A literature seminar activity with peer review and feedback was organized as a compulsory activity for all students, covering about 25% of the course content. The remaining 75% of the course was delivered as classical lectures. The students collaborated in groups to present the content of a review article complemented with a research article. For each group of students, an opponent group was assigned to challenge the presenting group by questions and contribute to the evaluation of the presentation together with the teacher. Based on the feedback survey, the students reacted positively to this active learning exercise, and they strongly recommended keeping it in the future editions of the course. The students' exam scores strongly indicated that the learning outcomes from the learning by teaching part of the course were consistently higher than from the classical lecture part of the course. Further optimization of the active learning part of the course is outlined based on student feedback.

Effectiveness of peer teaching in health professions education: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

The reform in health professions education requires the focus to shift from fact memorization to exploring, analyzing, assimilating, and synthesizing information to promote active and collaborative learning. Peer teaching is one of the educational strategies.

AIMS

This review aimed to explore and synthesize quantitative evidence to determine the overall effect of peer teaching in enhancing students' theoretical knowledge and practical skills (e.g., procedural skills and resuscitation) in health professions education.

METHODS

PubMed, ScienceDirect, CINAHL, ERIC, ProQuest, reference lists of relevant studies, and reviews were searched till November 2021. Results were pooled using random-effects meta-analysis or narrative synthesis.

RESULTS

A total of 44 RCTs were included. This review showed a significant effect of peer teaching on procedural skills improvement and a comparable effect on theoretical knowledge and resuscitation skills acquisition compared to the conventional teaching method. Near-peer teaching seemed to be the most effective method for skill improvement. Subgroup analysis showed no significant differences between peer teaching and conventional teaching groups (e.g., expert/faculty teaching, self-study or lectures).

CONCLUSIONS

Peer teaching seems to be a promising teaching and learning strategy in health professions education, positively affecting theoretical knowledge and procedural skills. Future research should explore the effect of peer teaching in developing countries to provide a comprehensive picture of peer teaching.

The Role of Digital Collaboration in Student Engagement towards Enhancing Student Participation during COVID-19

As Malaysia’s educational landscape continues to evolve, there is a need to rethink the models and practices involved in the teaching and learning process. The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, subsequent lockdowns, and movement control restrictions have contributed to the shift in education, especially in teaching and learning. Educational institutions were instructed to close during the lockdowns and this forced educators and students to communicate and engage using digital technologies. Students have no issues when it comes to embracing technology, but their ability to stay engaged and participate during lessons was of concern to educators. According to recent research, collaborative learning has been shown to be enjoyable and engaging for students, especially when it is conducted digitally using innovative learning technologies. When students show an increased level of engagement, it shows that they are actively participating and are more involved during lessons. This quantitative study looks into the relationship between variables pertaining to digital collaboration (personal factors, environmental factors, social media support, digital collaborative tools, interactivity, motivation) and student engagement toward enhanced student participation during COVID-19. The study utilizes Lev Vygotsky’s Collaborative Learning Theory alongside Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory. The data analysis revealed that there is a positive significant relationship between digital collaborative tools, interactivity, and motivation towards student engagement, which in turn proved that there is a positive significant relationship that can be drawn between student engagement and enhanced student participation during COVID-19.

The Retrieval Practice Hypothesis in Research on Learning by Teaching: Current Status and Challenges

To explain why students learn effectively by teaching, explaining to others in particular, Koh and colleagues advanced the retrieval practice hypothesis, which attributes the learning benefits entirely to the effect of practicing retrieval, that is, effortfully recalling to-be-taught information for the provision of instructional explanations. After delineating the rationale behind the retrieval practice hypothesis, the current situation of research, and the limitations of the existing approach, this paper proposes three tests for the evaluation of the hypothesis that address (1) whether explaining to others after initial studying surpasses restudying in learning performance, (2) whether the amount of effort to retrieve to-be-taught information from memory moderates the learning effects of explaining to others, and (3) whether the degree of elaboration during retrieval practice positively predicts the outcomes of learning by merely recalling to-be-taught information. Evidence is examined regarding whether each test is passed, and future directions for research on the retrieval practice hypothesis are discussed.

Comparing a Robot Tutee to a Human Tutee in a Learning-By-Teaching Scenario with Children

Social robots are increasingly being studied in educational roles, including as tutees in learning-by-teaching applications. To explore the benefits and drawbacks of using robots in this way, it is important to study how robot tutees compare to traditional learning-by-teaching situations. In this paper, we report the results of a within-subjects field experiment that compared a robot tutee to a human tutee in a Swedish primary school. Sixth-grade students participated in the study as tutors in a collaborative mathematics game where they were responsible for teaching a robot tutee as well as a third-grade student in two separate sessions. Their teacher was present to provide support and guidance for both sessions. Participants’ perceptions of the interactions were then gathered through a set of quantitative instruments measuring their enjoyment and willingness to interact with the tutees again, communication and collaboration with the tutees, their understanding of the task, sense of autonomy as tutors, and perceived learning gains for tutor and tutee. The results showed that the two scenarios were comparable with respect to enjoyment and willingness to play again, as well as perceptions of learning gains. However, significant differences were found for communication and collaboration, which participants considered easier with a human tutee. They also felt significantly less autonomous in their roles as tutors with the robot tutee as measured by their stated need for their teacher’s help. Participants further appeared to perceive the activity as somewhat clearer and working better when playing with the human tutee. These findings suggest that children can enjoy engaging in peer tutoring with a robot tutee. However, the interactive capabilities of robots will need to improve quite substantially before they can potentially engage in autonomous and unsupervised interactions with children.

The benefits of teaching on comprehension, motivation, and perceived difficulty: Empirical evidence of teaching expectancy and the interactivity of teaching

BACKGROUND

Research regarding teaching expectancy has been mostly conducted in research laboratories with college students. These studies provide insufficient evidence regarding its effect on learners' delayed comprehension. Moreover, the relative superiority of teaching a peer face to face compared to teaching an imagined peer lacks empirical support.

AIMS

The purpose of the study was to investigate the interactivity of teaching by comparing peer teaching to imagined teaching, as well as enhancing the generalizability of the teaching expectancy effect by testing it in a secondary school environment.

SAMPLE

A total of 597 students (282 males) from 12 classes in a secondary school were recruited to participate in the study as part of their psychology course.

METHODS

Participants were randomly assigned to one of six conditions formed by a 2 (teaching expectancy vs. testing expectancy) × 3 (peer teaching vs. imagined teaching vs. no teaching) between-subjects design. Their immediate and delayed comprehension tests, motivation, and perceived difficulty were measured as dependent variables.

RESULTS

Imagined teaching enhanced both immediate and delayed comprehension, but peer teaching only enhanced immediate comprehension. Moreover, the effects of imagined teaching on perceived difficulty and motivation were dependent upon teaching expectancy or testing expectancy.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings provide empirical evidence to the existing theoretical frameworks, but caution should be taken when applying imagined teaching in practice.

Student-led Recaps and Retrieval Practice: A Simple Classroom Activity Emphasizing Effective Learning Strategies

It is imperative that college and university faculty members continue to collaborate to develop and assess innovative teaching methods that effectively encourage learning for all undergraduates, particularly in STEM. Here we describe a simple student-led classroom technique, recap and retrieval practice (R&RP), that we, as two instructors at different institutions, collaboratively implemented in three upper-level STEM courses. R&RP sessions are short, student-led reviews of previous course material that feature student voices prominently at the start of every class period. R&RP sessions require a small team of students to prepare and deliver a review of prior course content via active retrieval practice formats, which are well known to be particularly effective learning tools. These R&RP assignments were also designed to emphasize additional evidence-based learning practices (concrete examples, dual coding, elaboration, interleaving, and spaced practice). Our analysis of undergraduate student experiences both in leading and participating in R&RPs indicates that overall R&RP sessions were well-received, active learning strategies that our students indicated fostered their learning. As instructors, we found R&RPs an effective and efficient strategy to encourage class participation, assess class participation, and emphasize student voices in our classrooms. Moreover, we found that collaboratively deploying a learning activity allowed us to observe the impact of a specific pedagogical activity in varied instructional settings and enhanced our professional development as educators.
