Everyday Uses of Music Listening and Music Technologies by Caregivers and People With Dementia: Survey and Focus Group Study

BACKGROUND

Music has long been identified as a nonpharmacological tool that can provide benefits for people with dementia, and there is considerable interest in designing technologies to support the use of music in dementia care. However, to ensure that music technologies are appropriately designed for supporting caregivers and people living with dementia, there remains a need to better understand how music is currently used in everyday dementia care at home.

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to understand how people living with dementia and their caregivers use music and music technologies in everyday caring, as well as the challenges they experience using music and technology.

METHODS

This study used a mixed methods design. First, a survey was administered to 13 people living with dementia and 64 caregivers to understand their use of music and technology. Subsequently, 18 survey respondents (family caregivers: n=12, 67%; people living with dementia: n=6, 33%) participated in focus groups regarding their experiences of using music and technology in care. Interview transcripts were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis.

RESULTS

Most of the survey respondents (people living with dementia: 9/13, 69%; family caregivers: 47/63, 75%) reported using music often or very often in their daily lives. Participants reported a range of technologies used for listening to music, such as CDs, radio, and streaming services. Focus groups highlighted the benefits and challenges of using music and music technologies in everyday care. Participants identified using music and music technologies to regulate mood, provide joy, facilitate social interaction and connection, encourage reminiscence, provide continuity of music use before and after the dementia diagnosis, and make caregiving easier. The challenges of using music technology in everyday caring included difficulties with staying up to date with evolving technology and low self-efficacy with technology for people living with dementia.

CONCLUSIONS

This study shows that people with a dementia diagnosis and their caregivers already use music and music technologies to support their everyday care needs. The results suggest opportunities to design technologies that enable easier access to music and to support people living with dementia with recreational and therapeutic music listening as well as music-based activities.

Music Listening Was an Emotional Resource and Social Surrogate for Older Adults During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Study

Loneliness and isolation worsen health and wellbeing have been exacerbated by COVID-19, and represent a significant concern for supporting older adults. Music listening has effects that could be particularly supportive during periods of isolation. The aim of this study is to examine older adults’ music listening behaviour during the COVID-19 pandemic and explore music's social and emotional impact in this context. Semi-structured interviews enhanced with music-elicitation were carried out remotely between May and June 2021. Participants were self-selected, community-dwelling older adults residing in Northern Ireland (N = 14; 6 males; 60–83 years). Most were living with their spouse or family, all were of White ethnicity and had varying levels of education. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Two main themes were identified: (1) Music as an emotional resource and (2) Music as a social surrogate. Older adults had a preference for using music to induce positive feelings, and used music for negative affect regulation and consolation. Music acted as a social surrogate providing company, and reminders of social relationships and experiences. Music listening was a valued behaviour during COVID-19. Findings have implications for how music listening might be used as an accessible, low-resource tool for supporting isolated older adults.

Music Listening Predicted Improved Life Satisfaction in University Students During Early Stages of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Quarantine and spatial distancing measures associated with COVID-19 resulted in substantial changes to individuals’ everyday lives. Prominent among these lifestyle changes was the way in which people interacted with media—including music listening. In this repeated assessment study, we assessed Australian university students’ media use (i.e., listening to music, playing video/computer games, watching TV/movies/streaming videos, and using social media) throughout early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia, and determined whether media use was related to changes in life satisfaction. Participants (N = 127) were asked to complete six online questionnaires, capturing pre- and during-pandemic experiences. The results indicated that media use varied substantially throughout the study period, and at the within-person level, life satisfaction was positively associated with music listening and negatively associated with watching TV/videos/movies. The findings highlight the potential benefits of music listening during COVID-19 and other periods of social isolation.
