Psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the health behavior motivation scale: a translation and validation study

Objective

This study's objectives were to translate the Health Behavior Motivation Scale (HBMS) into Chinese and verify the scale's validity and reliability among Chinese healthy adults.

Method

The HBMS scales were translated into Chinese based on Brislin's principles. The Chinese version of HBMS is created through translation, back translation, and cross-cultural adaptation. This investigation implemented the convenience sampling method to conduct a survey on 781 healthy respondents, utilizing the Chinese version of the HBMS and a general demographic questionnaire. We used AMOS (v28.0) and SPSS (v26.0) for statistical analysis. We employed test-retest reliability, split-half reliability, and internal consistency to assess the reliability of the translation questionnaire. Structure validity and content validity were used to assess validity.

Results

The Chinese version of the Health Behavior Motivation Scale (HBMS) had a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.885, and the range of Cronbach's alpha values for each dimension was 0.820-0.885. The scale's test-retest reliability was 0.824, and its split-half reliability was 0.906. Five public factors with a cumulative variance contribution of 56.527% were retrieved from the exploratory factor analysis. Moreover, the factor loading value for each item exceeded 0.4.In confirmatory factor analysis, the indicators were reported as follows: χ2/df = 1.567, GFI = 0.900, CFI = 0.952, IFI = 0.952, TLI = 0.946, AGFI = 0.881, PGFI = 0.757, PNFI = 0.789, RMSEA = 0.039, and the results of the model fit metrics were within the reference range.

Conclusion

The Chinese version of the HBMS exhibits strong discrimination, validity, and reliability. The tool effectively identifies the motivation of healthy people to engage in healthy behaviors. It can be used by healthcare practitioners to assist in the development of follow-up interventions to reduce the prevalence of chronic disease in older people and the incidence of chronic disease in populations of young and middle-aged people.

A State-of-the-Art Review of Teach-Back for Patients and Families With Heart Failure: How Far Have We Come?

BACKGROUND

Heart failure (HF) prevalence has risen for more than a decade. Effective patient and family education strategies for HF are needed on a global scale. One widely used method of education is the teach-back method, where learners are provided information, then their understanding assessed by "teaching it back" to the educator.

PURPOSE

This state-of-the-art review article seeks to examine the evidence focusing on the teach-back method of patient education and patient outcomes. Specifically, this article describes (1) the teach-back process, (2) teach-back's effect on patient outcomes, (3) teach-back in the context of family care partners, and (4) recommendations for future research and practice.

CONCLUSIONS

Study investigators report the use of teach-back, but few describe how teach-back was utilized. Study designs vary widely, with few having a comparison group, making conclusions across studies challenging. The effect of teach-back on patient outcomes is mixed. Some studies showed fewer HF readmissions after education using teach-back, but different times of measurement obscure understanding of longitudinal effects. Heart failure knowledge improved across most studies after teach-back interventions; however, results related to HF self-care were mixed. Despite family care partner involvement in several studies, how they were included in teach-back or the associated effects are unclear.

CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS

Future clinical trials that evaluate the effect of teach-back education on patient outcomes, such as short- and long-term readmission rates, biomarkers, and psychological measures, are needed, as patient education is the foundation for self-care and health-related behaviors.

Development and Validation of a Health Behaviour Scale: Exploratory Factor Analysis on Data from a Multicentre Study in Female Primary Care Patients

Health behaviours are the most important proximal determinants of health that can be either promoting or detrimental to the health of individuals. To assess and compare health behaviours in different socioeconomic groups within the population, a comprehensive, valid, reliable, and culturally appropriate measure is needed. This study aimed to develop a health behaviour questionnaire and validate it in a sample of female patients over 45 years of age with cardiovascular disease (CVD). The development procedure encompassed the following stages: literature search and item generation, content validity testing (focus group and expert evaluation), and field testing. A preliminary 38-item Health Behaviour Scale (HBS) was developed and tested in a group of 487 female primary care patients over 45 years of age. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) yielded a four-factor structure. Factors jointly accounted for 47% of the variance observed. The results confirmed very good internal consistency of the questionnaire. The Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega coefficients for the entire scale were 0.82 and 0.84, respectively. The factor and item structure of the final 16-item HBS reflects the specificity of the studied sample. This measure can be a useful tool for primary care practitioners and public health researchers by helping them to develop interventions and strategies to reinforce health-promoting behaviours.
