Research on Unsafe Behavior of Construction Workers Under the Bidirectional Effect of Formal Rule Awareness and Conformity Mentality

SEIR model and simulation research on unsafe psychological state propagation of construction workers considering safety climate and intimate relationships

The construction industry is a pillar industry of China and occupies an essential position in our economic development. However, in the fast-developing construction industry, the number of its safety accidents is also growing year by year. Safety accidents are often due to unsafe behaviors of construction workers, and unsafe precarious psychological states are important factors for unsafe behaviors. Therefore, this paper, based on a review of existing literature, uses the SEIR model and numerical simulation method to study the spread of unsafe psychological states among construction workers considering safety climate and intimate relationships. It puts forward corresponding countermeasures, which has great practical significance for reducing safety accidents in the construction industry. The results show that: (1) A good safety climate can help alleviate the spread of unsafe psychological states of construction workers. (2) The intimate relationship between construction workers will promote the association between communicable people and susceptible people, which will lead to the spread of an unsafe psychological state. (3) A larger network average degree will increase the spread speed and the density of communicable people, but will not increase the spread range.(4) Forgetting rate has a key role in the propagation of unsafe psychological states. Suggestions are made to hinder the propagation of these states, which will help to reduce the unsafe behavior of construction workers and the accident rate in the construction industry.

Factors affecting faculty conformity in South China universities

Based on social contagion theory, this study examines the mediating role of formalization of organizational structure between organizational identification and faculty conformity. It also analyzes the moderating role of conflict management style between organizational identification and faculty conformity, and formalization of organizational structure and faculty conformity in universities in Hunan province, China. Convenience sampling was employed to select the subjects, and 1,024 Chinese faculty members including teaching staff and administrative staff were surveyed online with the questionnaire consist of organizational identification scale, organizational formalization scale, conflict management style scale, and faculty conformity scale. 1,000 valid respondents were collected and SPSS was used to analyze the data through descriptive analysis, analysis of variance, correlation analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression. The results showed that faculty members’ organizational identification had a positive effect on faculty conformity; formalization of organizational structure partially mediated the relationship between organizational identification and faculty conformity; and conflict management style positively moderated the relationship between organizational identification and faculty conformity and between formalization of organizational structure and faculty conformity. University administrators are often the initiators of conformity as they are responsible for formulating internal regulations. Therefore, they must monitor and coordinate workplace conflicts, resolve and guide faculty conformity, promote individual faculty members’ self-improvement, and foster steady organizational development.

Developing a Decision-Making Model for Construction Safety Behavior Supervision: An Evolutionary Game Theory-Based Analysis

Without the active participation of enterprises and front-line workers, it is difficult for the government to perform effective supervision to ensure behavioral safety among front-line workers. To overcome inadequate government supervision and information attenuation caused by vertical management mode and limited resources, and to change passive supervision into active control with the proactive participation of enterprises and workers, this paper combines the entity responsibility mechanism and the third-party participation mechanism based on government supervision to analyze the decision-making process of government and enterprises on safety behavior supervision. An evolutionary game model was established to describe the decision-making interactions between the government and construction enterprises under the two mechanisms, and a simulation was performed to illustrate the factors influencing the implementation of the mechanisms. The results show that both mechanisms have a positive effect on government supervision, and the third-party participation mechanism was found to be working better. The implementation of the two mechanisms is influenced by punishment, subsidy, and cost, and it has different sensitivities to the three influencing factors. This study provides a theoretical framework for enhancing the government supervision mechanism, and the decision-making between the government and construction enterprises enhances the management form and guides their actual supervision practices.

Exploring Empirical Rules for Construction Accident Prevention Based on Unsafe Behaviors

This paper is aimed at exploring rules for construction accident prevention based on unsafe behaviors. The literature review demonstrates a clear connection between construction accident prevention and unsafe behaviors, followed by a 2-year field investigation resulting in 2207 observations based on convenient sampling with 95% confidence and 5% limit of errors in the 50–50 category. There are 80.43% unsafe behaviors categorized into “Regulations for the Occupational Safety and Health Equipment and Measures”, where there are 66.37% of regulations and law VII violations, linking fall prevention with the most cases (94.48%) of Fall Protection and Structure Strengthening. The Apriori yields 13 association rules, where the top 3 rules show that 44.11% of the Passage and lighting category is linked to construction equipment inspections; 29.41% of the high-pressure gas category is linked to construction equipment inspections; 100% of the fire prevention category is linked to fire protection unsafe behavior. The findings clarify the association rules that can prevent workers from accidents in construction sites.
