Resilience and positive coping style affect the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and academic procrastination among Chinese undergraduate nursing students

The correlation between social adaptability and academic procrastination of undergraduate nursing students: the mediating role of resilience

BACKGROUND

How to mobilize nurses students' learning initiative, reduce the incidence of academic procrastination, and improve their social adaptability is a key factor in lowering nursing brain drain and improving nursing quality.

OBJECTIVE

To explore the mediating role of resilience in the correlation between social adaptability and academic procrastination of undergraduate nursing students.

METHODS

This study is a cross-sectional survey. The researchers conducted an electronic questionnaire survey of 962 nursing undergraduates in Guanzhong District, Shaanxi Province from November 2022 to April 2023, and adopted the intention sampling method. And make the following assumptions: (1) There is a significant negative correlation between academic procrastination and social adaptability. (2) Academic procrastination can directly affect the social adaptability of undergraduate nursing students, and it has a significant negative predictive effect. (3) Resilience can directly affect academic procrastination and social adaptability. At the same time, resilience plays an intermediary role between the two. In this study, the Aitken procrastination scale, the resilience scale, and the social adaptability diagnostic scale were used to evaluate undergraduate nursing students. SPSS27.0 software is used to analyze the data statistically, and the Hayes PROCESS Macro method is used to test the model.

RESULTS

The study's findings are as follows: 1) Academic procrastination significantly and negatively impacts social adaptability (c = -0.292, t = -6.407, p < 0.001). 2) Even when accounting for resilience, academic procrastination still significantly predicts lower social adaptability (c'= -0.204, t = -4.338, p < 0.001). 3) The Bootstrap method test of percentile bias correction indicates that resilience serves as a significant mediator between academic procrastination and social adaptability. Bootstrap SE = 0.018, 95% CI = (-0.124, -0.055). The indirect effect contributes to 29.79% of the total effect.

CONCLUSION

Resilience not only directly affects the academic procrastination and social adaptability of nursing students, but also partially intermediate the relationship between academic procrastination and social adaptability.

Analysis of factors influencing cardiovascular surgical nurses' emergency response capabilities, self-efficacy, and coping strategies

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the emergency response capabilities of cardiovascular surgical nurses, analyze their correlation with self-efficacy and coping styles, and summarize targeted intervention measures.

METHODS

A total of 243 cardiovascular surgical nurses from comprehensive tertiary Grade A hospitals in Jiangsu Province were selected using convenience sampling from October to November 2023. Participants were surveyed using a general information questionnaire, an emergency response capability assessment scale for operating room nurses, a general self-efficacy scale, and a simplified coping style scale.

RESULTS

The total scores were 114.77±12.39 for emergency response capability, 2.69±0.58 for self-efficacy, 2.02±0.54 for positive coping style, and 1.16±0.53 for negative coping style. Pearson correlation analysis showed that emergency response capability was positively correlated with self-efficacy and positive coping styles and negatively correlated with negative coping styles (all P<0.05). Optimal scaling regression analysis indicated seven factors; age, years of work, professional level, title, self-efficacy, positive coping style, and negative coping style, which could explain 39.0% of the variation in emergency response capability (all P<0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The emergency response capabilities of cardiovascular surgical nurses are moderately high and closely related to their self-efficacy and coping styles. Emergency rescue training for cardiovascular surgical nurses should aim at enhancing self-efficacy and positive coping styles by, for example, setting clear training goals, focusing on individual differences, fostering of active learning, and stimulating their intrinsic motivation to enhance their emergency response capabilities. These changes will lead to more organized and efficient cardiovascular surgical emergency work.

The process and indicators of resilience among nursing students in clinical practicum in Taiwan: A qualitative study

Background

Resilience is essential for managing stress and maintaining equilibrium. During the clinical practicum, nursing students may experience tremendous physical and mental stress, and these negative experiences are considered a source of resilience for students. However, no universal definition of resilience among nursing students exists in the literature, occasioning the need to define the processes and indicators of resilience.

Purpose

This study aims to explore the resilience process and indicators among nursing students in clinical practicum in Taiwan. Participants: Fifteen fifth-year junior college nursing students in Northeastern Taiwan who had completed the clinical practicum were interviewed, including 12 females and three males. All participants were aged 20.3 ± 0.61 years and all participants had clinical practicum experiences over four months.

Methods

A qualitative descriptive study, using purposive and snowball sampling methods, was conducted to collect the experience of the nursing students in their internship. Data were collected using a semi-structured guide and deep interviews, and analyzed through the content analysis method by Waltz, Strickland, & Lenz (2010).

Results

Based on the participants' practical experiences during their clinical practicum, three main themes and nine indicators were identified. The resilience of nursing students is considered a process. The main themes are (1) uncontrolled clinical practical stress, (2) Maintain learning-life balance, (3) Positive attitude toward nursing.

Conclusions

Resilience is a critical factor to stabilize nursing students and enable them to recover from adversity. Both positive and negative experiences significantly impacted the students' attitudes and confidence levels during the clinical practicum. The findings will provide faculty to adapt their teaching method to various situations of nursing students.

The association between perfectionism and academic procrastination among undergraduate nursing students: The role of self-efficacy and resilience

AIMS

This study aimed to investigate the associations between perfectionism and undergraduate nursing students' academic procrastination, the mediating effects of self-efficacy and the moderating role of resilience.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional survey.

METHODS

The survey was conducted from March to May 2022 with a sample of 587 undergraduate nursing students in two undergraduate universities in China. A descriptive statistical approach, Pearson's correlation analysis and the Hayes' PROCESS Macro model 4 and 14 were used to analyse the available data.

RESULTS

Adaptive perfectionism and maladaptive perfectionism negatively and positively predicted academic procrastination in nursing undergraduates, respectively. Self-efficacy played a partially mediating role in the association between adaptive perfectionism and academic procrastination. Furthermore, resilience played a moderating role in the association between adaptive perfectionism and academic procrastination.

CONCLUSIONS

Maladaptive perfectionism and low levels of resilience and self-efficacy may increase the risk of academic procrastination among nursing undergraduates. Nursing educators can take measures to decrease the risk of academic procrastination among nursing undergraduate students by guiding them to cultivate adaptive perfectionism tendencies and improve their self-efficacy and resilience.

IMPACT

The findings of this study can be used to develop targeted coping and prevention measures for nursing educators to reduce the incidence of academic procrastination among nursing undergraduates.

Five hundred eighty-seven undergraduate nursing students from two undergraduate universities participated in the study and responded to questions on perfectionism and academic procrastination, etc.
