The development and evolution of the research topic on the mental health of college students: A bibliometric review based on CiteSpace and VOSviewer

Background

With the advances in society and in response to changing times, college students have had to face multiple challenges. These challenges frequently affect the mental health of college students, leading to significant consequences for their social lives, personal well-being, and academic achievements, thereby attracting extensive societal attention. Therefore, examining the current status of research topics related to the mental health of college students can assist academia in dissecting the influencing factors and seeking solutions at their source or through early intervention. This can contribute to a better understanding of and effectively address this challenge.

Method

CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used to conduct a bibliometric analysis of 1609 journal articles indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) database over the past two decades (2000-2022), which helped identify the current state of research and hot topics in the field based on development trends. Furthermore, this study analyzes and discusses the core authors, high-productivity countries and organizations, key journals, and keyword clustering in this field. This study clarifies the current research landscape, analyzes evolving trends based on developmental trajectories, and identifies forefront research hotspots. This study provides scholars with reference research directions and ideas for conducting subsequent studies.

Results

Since the beginning of the 21st century, research on college students' mental health has increased, especially in the past three years, and due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and online distance learning, the number of publications has increased rapidly. With the increase in attention and publication volume, the countries and organizations contributing papers as well as core journals have all started to take shape. Cluster and evolution analyses found that several stable research topics have been formed in this research field, and many new and diverse topics are continuously emerging with time.

Conclusion

and prospect: The findings prove that the field of college students' mental health has begun to take shape, gradually shifting from conceptual research to the implementation of specific interventions. However, whether specific interventions are effective and how effective they are require further investigation.

Efficacy of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy With Local Wisdom and Web-Based Counseling on Generalized Anxiety Disorders and Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders in Adolescent College Girls: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial

BACKGROUND

The high academic demands experienced by students will often have an impact on the quality of their mental and physical health. The most common health problems reported are gastrointestinal disorders. This condition tends to manifest in the emergence of generalized anxiety disorders (GADs) and reduces the quality of life and productivity. The population that experiences this disorder the most is female adolescents, and this condition occurs in both South African and Indonesian populations. The use of drugs, especially benzodiazepines, often causes psychological conditions as side effects. For this reason, it is necessary to have a solution in the form of a targeted and efficient approach to reduce psychological symptoms that arise from functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) in the form of anxiety.

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study is to produce and implement a counseling intervention model to assist female students with GADs caused by FGID factors using an approach combining cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), web-based counseling, and local wisdom in Indonesian and South African populations.

METHODS

The research subjects will comprise 118 female adolescent students from Indonesia and 118 female adolescent students from South Africa, making a total sample of 236 participants, and the study will use a prospective, parallel randomized controlled trial design. The recruitment process will begin in July 2023, and the trial will begin in August 2023. The posttest assessment data gathering will take place by November 2023. Questionnaires that will be used in this study include the Functional Gastrointestinal Disorder Checklist (FGI-Checklist) to collect data related to FGIDs and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item (GAD-7) to measure the anxiety conditions experienced by respondents.

RESULTS

By adopting the intention-to-treat principle, there will be significant mean changes in GAD scores and FGID scores after exposure to this combined approach in the Indonesian and South African populations. Implementing this comprehensive intervention will improve the students' psychological symptoms related to FGIDs and ultimately enhance their overall well-being.

CONCLUSIONS

This study will develop and implement a model of counseling intervention for female students with GADs obtained from FGIDs using a combination approach to CBT, web-based counseling, and local wisdom in both the Indonesian and South African populations. The trial findings will contribute to our understanding of the effects of CBT combined with local wisdom and web-based counseling approaches that mental health counselors can use to treat GAD-affected adolescent girls who have FGIDs.

A Mental Health Management and Cognitive Behavior Analysis Model of College Students Using Multi-View Clustering Analysis Algorithm

In this new era that is full of social changes, ongoing economic transformation, an abundance of information resources, and a fast pace of life, the pressure that people feel to compete with one another is also increasing day by day. Because of the vast differences in people's states of consciousness and worldviews, interpersonal relationships have become increasingly difficult to navigate. Students in higher education institutions will eventually emerge as the dominant demographic in society. Their mental health has a significant bearing on all aspects of life, including learning and future growth. An objective condition that must be met in order to guarantee that the next generation of talent will have a high level of overall quality is the improvement of the mental health of college students (CSMH) in the new era. One component of public health is the emotional well-being of students in higher education. The state of the public's health is consistently ranked among the most urgent problems facing modern society. However, there is not much hope for the Chinese CSMH. In order to effectively manage their mental health, a variety of educational institutions, including colleges and universities, have proposed a large number of management strategies for CSMH. The vast majority of these strategies are not targeted, and they do not offer a variety of management strategies that are based on the many different psychological states. It is necessary to first be able to accurately predict the mental health status of each individual college student in order to achieve the goal of improving the mental health management of students attending colleges and universities. This study proposes using a multi-view K-means algorithm, abbreviated as MvK-means, to analyze the CSMH's data on mental health. This is possible because the data can be obtained from multiple perspectives. This paper presents a multi-view strategy as well as a weight strategy in light of the fact that each point of view contributes in its own unique way. Different weight values should be assigned to each view's data, which will ultimately result in an improved evaluation effect of the model. The findings of the experiments indicate that the model that was proposed has a beneficial impact on the analysis of the data pertaining to the mental health of college students.
