As technology continues to play an integral role in our daily lives, concerns regarding the appropriate and healthy use of screen time have prompted health organizations and authorities worldwide to establish guidelines and recommendations. This paper comprehensively summarizes existing recommendations and guidelines for screen time use from various countries, highlighting key similarities, differences, and emerging trends. However, there is a dire need to expand the existing repertoire of guidelines and recommendations to different age groups and strategies depending on user engagement for healthy screen time use.

Exploring the burden of irritable bowel syndrome among university students in Saudi Arabia: A study on prevalence, psychological associations, and well-being

Patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) experience not only a detrimental impact on their physical health but also a significant influence on their psychological well-being. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of IBS among university students, investigating the sociodemographic and lifestyle factors influencing its onset. Furthermore, it explored the potential impact of psychological factors such as depression, anxiety, and overall well-being on the prevalence of IBS. A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted at Saudi Arabian universities in November and December 2023. To collect data, an anonymous, validated, predesigned questionnaire was used. The diagnosis of IBS was carried out using the validated Arabic version of the Rome IV questionnaire. We used the Arabic version of the World Health Organization Well-being Index to assess the participants' well-being. We used the Arabic version of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) to identify people who show clinically significant symptoms of anxiety and depression. Our study included a total of 379 university students, 46.7% were female 86.0% of participants resided in urban areas, and 7.2% had been previously diagnosed with IBS. The prevalence of IBS among participants was found to be 31.9%. We observed a significant association between marital status and IBS (χ2 = 3.95, P = .047). Furthermore, the highest prevalence of IBS was observed among students majoring in literary and scientific disciplines (χ2 = 0.952, P = .049). Individuals with IBS demonstrate a significantly higher prevalence of anxiety (71.90% vs 41.09%, P < .001) and depression (64.46% vs 42.64%, P < .001) compared to those without IBS. Furthermore, people with IBS had a slightly higher prevalence of poor well-being (38.84%) compared to those without IBS (33.72%), but this association was not statistically significant. In multivariate analysis, having a family history of IBS [OR = 1.75 (95% CI, 1.06-2.87), P = .029] having borderline anxiety [OR = 7.58, 95% CI (2.12-27.06), P = .012] and anxiety [OR = 16.07, 95% CI (4.57-56.52), P < .001], and depression [OR = 2.97, 95% CI (1.13-7.83), P = .010] were the main significant predictors of IBS among university students. The high prevalence of IBS among university students was associated with a family history of IBS as well as depression and anxiety. Increasing awareness, multidisciplinary support, and access to mental health services is required to ensure university students' well-being.

Emotions on Twitter as crisis imprint in high-trust societies: Do ambient affiliations affect emotional expression during the pandemic?

During the Covid-19 crisis, citizens turned to Twitter for information seeking, emotional outlet and sense-making of the crisis, creating ad hoc social communities using crisis-specific hashtags. The theory of ambient affiliation posits that the use of hashtags upscales the call to affiliate with the values expressed in the tweet. Given the deep functional tie between values and emotions, hashtag use might further amplify certain emotions. While emotions in crises-hashtagged communities have been previously investigated, the hypothesis of amplification of emotions through hashtag use has not yet been tested. We investigate such effect during the Covid-19 crisis in a scenario of high-trust Nordic societies, focusing on non-hashtagged, crisis hashtagged (e.g., '#Covid-19') and threat hashtagged (e.g., '#misinformation') tweets. To do so we apply XLM-RoBERTa to estimate Anger, Fear, Sadness, Disgust, Joy and Optimism. Our results revealed that crisis-hashtagged (#Covid-19) tweets expressed more negative emotions (Anger, Fear, Disgust and Sadness) and less positive emotions (Optimism and Joy) than non-hashtagged Covid-19 tweets for all countries except Finland. Threat tweets (#misinformation) expressed even more negative emotions (Anger, Fear, Disgust) and less positive emotions (Optimism and Joy) than #Covid-19 tweets, with a particularly large effect for Anger. Our findings provide useful context for previous research on collective emotions during crises, as most Twitter content is not hashtagged, and given the faster spread of emotionally charged content, further support the special focus on specific ad hoc communities for crisis and threat management and monitoring.

Coping strategies and social support in nursing students during clinical practice: A scoping review

To identify the coping strategies and social support received by nursing students during clinical practice.

METHODS

Primary studies on coping strategies and social support, in full text, in English, French, Spanish or Portuguese and published in 2018 or later were included. Search was carried out in January 2023 on EBSCOhost, PubMed, SciELO, ScienceDirect, OpenAIRE, MedNar Search, WorldWideScience and the references of previously selected articles.

RESULTS

A total of 24 studies were identified. Seven studies mentioned social support as a useful strategy and several instruments were identified that allow measurement.

CONCLUSIONS

Few studies establish a direct relationship between the effectiveness of coping strategies with stressful situations. Positive coping strategies are associated with effective stress management. The relationship between social support and stress reduction is scarcely addressed.

IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE

Stressful situations can have an impact on students' health and on the quality of care. Nursing schools and healthcare institutions must work together in programmes to improve students coping abilities.

IMPACT

This review addressed coping strategies used by nursing students during clinical practice. A set of relevant coping strategies were identified that can be used by teachers to improve students' outcomes.

Cross-sectional examination of correlates of sexual victimization disclosure via #MeToo

Background: Sexual victimization is a serious public health problem, with a range of negative impacts on mental and physical health. Responses that individuals get to disclosure of sexual victimization play an important role in recovery. With the increased use of social media, more survivors are talking about their experiences of sexual victimization online. Research is needed to document the correlates of online disclosure of sexual victimization.Objective: The current study examined the role of demographic characteristics, assault severity, coping strategies, and social isolation as putative correlates of disclosing sexual victimization online via the hashtag #MeToo.Methods: A sample of 637 adults recruited via social media who reported a history of sexual victimization since the age of 14 completed self-report surveys using online survey software to assess disclosure of sexual victimization, assault severity, coping strategies, and social isolation.Results: Multivariate analyses suggest that levels of emotion-focused coping were positively associated with the disclosure of sexual victimization online via #MeToo. Further, individuals who had experienced completed rape by verbal coercion were less likely to disclose via #MeToo, compared to individuals who experienced other forms of assault.Conclusion: Coping strategies and assault severity play an important role in determining whether survivors disclose sexual victimization online via #MeToo. Findings suggest that individuals may disclose via #MeToo to seek support or express their emotions. Further, individuals whose sexual victimization experiences do not conform to 'typical' sexual victimization experiences are less likely to disclose via #MeToo.
