Abstract
RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES The mechanism of comorbidity between alcohol dependence and depressive disorders are not well understood. This study investigated differences in the brain function of alcohol-dependent patients with and without depression by performing functional connectivity analysis using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 29 alcohol-dependent patients with depression, 31 alcohol-dependent patients without depression and 31 healthy control subjects were included in this study. The resting-state functional connectivity between the amygdala and the whole brain was compared among the three groups. Additionally, we examined the correlation between functional connectivity values in significantly different brain regions and levels of alcohol dependence and depression. RESULTS The resting-state functional connectivity between the left amygdala and the right caudate nucleus was decreased in alcohol-dependent patients. Additionally, the resting-state functional connectivity of the right amygdala with the right caudate nucleus, right transverse temporal gyrus, right temporal pole: superior temporal gyrus were also decreased. In alcohol-dependent patients with depression, not only was functional connectivity between the above brain regions significantly decreased, but so was functional connectivity between the right amygdala and the left middle temporal gyrus. Also, there was no significant correlation between the resting-state functional connectivity values in statistically significant brain regions and the levels of alcohol dependence and depression. CONCLUSION The impairment of the functional connectivity of the amygdala with caudate nucleus and partial temporal lobe may be involved in the neural mechanism of alcohol dependence comorbidity depressive disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A new ready-to-drink premixed high-alcohol-content beverage, called strong chū-hai, was launched in Japan, and more recently, in Taiwan and Australia. We aimed to examine the popularity and association of strong chū-hai with individual alcohol use, both of which remained unclear. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from the Japan "Society and New Tobacco" Internet Survey conducted from February 1 to 28, 2022, in Japan. We enrolled 27,993 respondents (aged 15 to 81 years; male 48.5%), including 15,083 current alcohol users. Using inverse probability weighting of data from the 2016 Comprehensive Survey of Living Conditions on Health and Welfare, we estimated the weighted proportions of strong chū-hai users among all respondents and constructed multivariable logistic regression models to estimate the weighted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of strong chū-hai use for hazardous and harmful alcohol use, defined as a score ≥8 of the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test, among current alcohol users. RESULTS Among all respondents, 56.2% (weighted proportions: past, 35.9%; and current, 20.3%) drank strong chū-hai. Among drinkers, both past and current strong chū-hai use, compared to never use, were associated with hazardous and harmful alcohol use (past, OR 1.73, 95% CI 1.42 to 2.12; current, OR 2.19, 95% CI 1.79 to 2.69). CONCLUSIONS Our study found that more than half of the respondents experienced strong chū-hai consumption, suggesting that it is widely used in Japan. In addition, both past and current strong chū-hai use were associated with hazardous and harmful alcohol use among current alcohol users.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aggression is common among individuals with methamphetamine use disorder (MAUD) and constitutes a serious public health issue. The current study aimed to examine associations of methamphetamine-use characteristics and childhood trauma with aggression in men with MAUD. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2017 to August 2018. MAUD patients recruited from a compulsory drug rehabilitation center (n = 360) and healthy comparison subjects (n = 604) completed a survey that measured aggression and childhood trauma, using the Chinese version of Buss-Perry Aggressive Questionnaire (AQ-CV), and the short form of Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ-SF), respectively. MAUD patients also provided information on methamphetamine-use characteristics such as the age of MAUD onset, MAUD severity, and co-occurring alcohol use disorder (AUD) and tobacco use disorder (TUD) using standard or self-designed questionnaires. Chi-square tests and t-tests were used to compare childhood trauma and aggression between the MAUD and comparison groups. Multiple linear regressions were conducted to determine correlates of overall aggression and its five sub-scales among the MAUD group. RESULTS The MAUD group had higher childhood trauma and aggression scores than the comparison group. Within the MAUD group, age of MAUD onset, having severe MAUD, co-occurring AUD, co-occurring TUD, and childhood trauma were associated with overall aggression, with slightly different correlates found for its five sub-scales. CONCLUSIONS Our study shows a high level of childhood trauma and aggression in the MAUD group. Both methamphetamine-use characteristics (age of MAUD onset, severe MAUD, co-occurring AUD/TUD) and childhood trauma were associated with aggression in MAUD. Our findings provide useful information on potential risk factors for aggression and inform future longitudinal research to establish causal relationships between these factors and aggression to guide further prevention and treatment programs.

Abstract
The co-occurrence of alcohol use disorder (AUD) and depression is associated with a seven-fold increased risk of suicide. The purpose of the current systematic review is to synthesize the evidence of the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) on depression and alcohol craving in patients with comorbid AUD and depression. Electronic databases were searched using a combination of key words. Seven studies, investigating a total of 349 participants, were included. MBIs improved depression and alcohol craving among individuals with comorbid AUD and depression. Health care professionals can use MBI as adjunctive treatment for decreasing depression and alcohol craving. Future research is needed to explore how MBIs can be tailored to specific cultures and to document the longitudinal effectiveness of treatment.
