Evaluation of the Modified LIVestock SIMulator for Stall-Fed Dairy Cattle in the Tropics

Citrus limon Wastes from Part of the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa: Medicinal, Sustainable Agricultural, and Bio-Resource Potential

The fruits of Citrus limon are often purchased for their vitamin C-rich juice, while the fruit peel and the tree leaves are discarded as wastes. This study obtained the chemical profiles of the essential oils (EOs) of C. limon wastes (the peel and leaves), evaluated their medicinal value as antioxidants, their potential for sustainable use in agriculture as an insecticide for post-harvest preservation of grains, and their potential as a bioresource in livestock feed formulations. The EOs were isolated from C. limon leaves and peel using a hydro-distillation method on a Clevenger apparatus. The oil constituents were identified using the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) hyphenated technique. The oils were evaluated for their in vitro antioxidant activity using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric-reducing antioxidant power methods. An insecticidal study was conducted using contact toxicity, fumigation, and repellence bioassay methods against Sitophilus zeamais (maize weevils). Finally, the predicted income from using lemon peel as an alternative or substitute ingredient for maize in livestock feed formulations was obtained through a conventional simulation method. Chemically, limonene was found to be present in all the EOs analyzed (12-52%), while α-pinene was only found in the fresh leaf and peel oils (13.3% and 10.6%). Caryophyllene oxide was identified as the major component of the dried leaf oil (17.7%). At 20 µg m, the dry peel oil exhibited the highest inhibitory activity (52.41 ± 0.26%) against the DPPH radical, which was comparable to L-ascorbic acid (a standard antioxidant) at 54.25 ± 3.55%. The insecticidal study revealed that the dry peel oil is a better insect repellent (73.33 ± 6.95% at 10 µL) and fumigant (LC50 = 0.17 µL g-1 after 48 h) natural agent compared to the peel oil. Conversely, the dry peel oil showed a better contact activity (LC50 = 1.69 µL g-1) against the maize weevils compared to the dry leaf oil. The simulation study showed the cost of using dry lemon peel as an alternative to maize in livestock feed formulation to be ZAR 2.8 billion, compared against the higher cost of feed formulation with maize, which currently stands at ZAR 24.9 billion. This study has shown that C. limon wastes (the peel and leaves) contain EOs with unique chemical profiles, valuable medicinal properties as free radical scavengers, and considerable insecticidal properties for agricultural use in post-harvest grain preservation, presenting a cost-effective and promising bioresource for livestock feed production.

Predicting nitrogen excretion of cattle kept under tropical and subtropical conditions using semimechanistic models

The present study aims at evaluating whether current semimechanistic models developed for temperate cattle systems can be adopted for cattle under (sub-) tropical husbandry systems to adequately (accurately and precisely) predict total nitrogen (TN), urine nitrogen (UN), faecal nitrogen (FN) excretion and its partition into different FN fractions. Selected models were built based on the feeding recommendations for ruminants of the British (Model A), German (Model G) and French (INRA; Model I) system. Model evaluation was conducted using eight nitrogen balance studies performed in El Salvador, Kenya and Peru (n = 392 individual observations including lactating cows, heifers and steers). Concordance correlation coefficient, root mean square errors (RMSE), and mean biases were estimated to evaluate the models' adequacy in predicting nitrogen excretion. Input variables causing greatest variation in nitrogen excretion prediction were identified by a sensitivity analysis and adjusted. Model G was able to adequately (i.e., RMSE of <25% of observed mean, systematic error of <5% of the mean square error) predict TN excretion through a compensation between overestimation of UN excretion and underestimation of FN excretion. None of the models were able to adequately predict UN, FN, and different FN fractions. Model I adequately predicted FN (RMSE = 18%) when duodenal microbial crude protein flow was increased, and the intercept used to predict FN excretion was reduced from 4.30 to 3.82 g of nitrogen per kilogram of dry matter intake. These adjustments, however, were not sufficient to predict adequately UN excretion (RMSE = 38%), individual FN fractions (RMSE > 56%), and TN (RMSE = 22%) excretion, by Model I.

Accuracy of enteric methane emission models for cattle in sub-Saharan Africa: status quo and the way forward

Cattle emit over 65% of enteric methane (CH4) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), making them the focus of many mitigation strategies targeting livestock emissions. Since measured feed intake data are sparse, emission factors for enteric CH4 (EFCH4) are mainly estimated indirectly from gross energy intake (GEI) using the net energy (NE) requirements for different metabolic processes in cattle. However, all NE requirement systems commonly used for cattle in SSA were developed for cattle in temperate regions. Therefore, we assessed the suitability of different enteric CH4 models for estimating the GEI of cattle in SSA. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and South African models were identified as the main tier 2-based methods used to estimate enteric CH4 emissions from cattle in SSA. In the IPCC model, EFCH4 was estimated as (GEI * [Ym/100])/55.65, where Ym is the conversion factor (%) of gross energy in feed to CH4 and 55.65 the energy content of CH4 (MJ/kg). The GEI was estimated based on NE requirements for different metabolic processes in cattle as per the American National Research Council. In the South African model, EFCH4 was estimated as (Y/100 * GEI/55.22), where Y is the CH4 yield and 55.22 is the energy content of CH4; Y was calculated from the dry matter (DM) digestibility while GEI was calculated by predicting DM intake and multiplying it by 18.4 MJ (gross energy per kilogram DM). Also, the suitability of the British and German NE requirement systems was assessed as alternatives used for cattle nutrition in SSA. These NE systems were implemented in the IPCC model to yield the "AFRC" and "GfE" models, respectively. The four models were then evaluated using an evaluation dataset summarizing feed quality and DM intake results from 21 studies conducted in SSA, with 125 dietary treatments, and 822 cattle observations. The relative prediction error (RPE) and concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) were used to evaluate the models' accuracy. Only the South African model estimated the GEI in dairy cattle with an acceptable RPE (18.9%) and highest CCC (0.87), while the other three models yielded estimates with RPE > 20%. None of the four models we assessed estimated GEI for other cattle (i.e., nondairy) with an RPE < 20% or CCC > 0.30. The inaccuracy in GEI estimates suggests an error of the same magnitude in EFCH4 estimates. Therefore, a concerted effort is needed to improve the accuracy of enteric CH4 estimation models for cattle in SSA.

Using the Unity Game Engine to Develop a 3D Simulated Ecological System Based on a Predator–Prey Model Extended by Gene Evolution

In this paper, we present a novel implementation of an ecosystem simulation. In our previous work, we implemented a 3D environment based on a predator–prey model, but we found that in most cases, regardless of the choice of starting parameters, the simulation quickly led to extinctions. We wanted to achieve system stabilization, long-term operation, and better simulation of reality by incorporating genetic evolution. Therefore we applied the predator–prey model with an evolutional approach. Using the Unity game engine we created and managed a closed 3D ecosystem environment defined by an artificial or real uploaded map. We present some demonstrative runs while gathering data, observing interesting events (such as extinction, sustainability, and behavior of swarms), and analyzing possible effects on the initial parameters of the system. We found that incorporating genetic evolution into the simulation slightly stabilized the system, thus reducing the likelihood of extinction of different types of objects. The simulation of ecosystems and the analysis of the data generated during the simulations can also be a starting point for further research, especially in relation to sustainability. Our system is publicly available, so anyone can customize and upload their own parameters, maps, objects, and biological species, as well as inheritance and behavioral habits, so they can test their own hypotheses from the data generated during its operation. The goal of this article was not to create and validate a model but to create an IT tool for evolutionary researchers who want to test their own models and to present them, for example, as animated conference presentations. The use of 3D simulation is primarily useful for educational purposes, such as to engage students and to increase their interest in biology. Students can learn in a playful way while observing in the graphical scenery how the ecosystem behaves, how natural selection helps the adaptability and survival of species, and what effects overpopulation and competition can have.
