Wildlife Photos on Social Media: A Quantitative Content Analysis of Conservation Organisations’ Instagram Images

Effects of captions on viewers' perceptions of images depicting human-primate interaction

Promoting human contact with wildlife can be harmful to animal conservation and welfare by exposing animals to unsafe situations and driving demand for wildlife tourism and exotic pets. Conservationists and researchers justifiably use social media to raise awareness, but professionals posting pictures of themselves with animals can have unintended negative consequences for conservation. Though the International Union for Conservation of Nature Best Practice Guidelines for Responsible Images of Non-Human Primates suggests researchers and animal professionals provide context in captions of images of humans interacting with primates, there is little research investigating whether this approach is effective. We investigated whether informative captions affect viewers' desires to have primates as pets and attitudes toward wildlife conservation. Using 4 mock Instagram posts depicting human-gorilla and human-slender loris interactions, we surveyed 2977 respondents to assess the effect of captions on viewers' perceptions of the images and primate conservation. Likert scale response data were analyzed with ordered probit regression models. Captions clearly contextualizing an image as research resulted in a significantly higher agreement that posts depicted wildlife research (gorilla β = 0.28 [SE 0.06], p < 0.001; loris β = 0.18 [0.06], p = 0.002), but such captions resulted in no significant difference in responses regarding viewers' desires to own primates as pets or questions regarding the primates' conservation statuses. Although most participants agreed the primates were endangered, more than 56% and 59%, respectively, stated they would have a gorilla or loris as a pet, that they would make good pets, or both, further supporting the conclusion that captions do not minimize harmful impacts of images of human-primate interactions.

Endoscopic Spine Surgery on Instagram: Analysis of Content and Engagement

Introduction Social media platforms have changed the way society communicates and collaborates. Prior research in healthcare discusses how social media can empower patients, dispel health-related misinformation, and help maintain a patient-centered practice. The goal of this study was to evaluate the use of #endoscopicspinesurgery on Instagram and create a blueprint for creating engaging posts on the social media platform. Methodology Public Instagram posts (n = 171) that utilized #endoscopicspinesurgery were collected over three months in 2022. Each post was assessed for photo and caption content, likes, comments, number of followers, and hashtag information. Engagement rates were calculated for each post to assess the active interaction of post characteristics and content. Results The majority of posts were published by medical professionals (72/171, 42.1%) and industry-related user accounts (55/171, 32.2%). Content related to training, conferences, and the operating room garnered the highest average engagement. Post characteristics (number of hashtags and number of post photos) were significantly associated with engagement. Conclusions Results highlighted general trends in creating engaging social media posts, such as using hashtags intentionally to increase searchability and visibility, having higher numbers of photos in a post and using high-quality photos, and understanding the dynamic social media algorithms that may affect post viewership. When structuring social media posts, users should be aware of the audience they want to attract and construct their content accordingly.

TikTok's Falco tinnunculus: Getting to Know Urban Wildlife through Social Media

Wildlife residing in cities has made encounters between humans and wild animals a common phenomenon. The perspective of the conflict-laden animal-human relationship has been over-emphasized by traditional media, which neglects the peaceful and harmonious daily encounters between residents and urban wildlife. This paper addresses the lacuna in extant literature by examining the virtual encounters between urban residents and wildlife on TikTok by sharing the living habits of Falco tinnunculus. Participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, and text analysis were adopted to explore the knowledge production process of urban wildlife as well as the emotional response of audiences. We found that displaying urban wildlife in short videos is a dynamic process involving the mutual participation of wildlife and humans. Meanwhile, audiences' anthropocentric gaze of wildlife via TikTok attends to their desires for intimacy with nature and demonstrates the unequal and unbalanced power between wild animals and humans. These findings suggest that more efforts should be made to guide the public to pay attention to native urban wildlife species and to reflect upon the ethics and rationality of such unequal power relations between wild animals and humans.
