Abstract
Medical device-associated infections are a pervasive global healthcare concern, often leading to severe complications. Bacterial biofilms that form on indwelling medical devices, such as catheters, are significant contributors to infections like bloodstream and urinary tract infections. This study addresses the challenge of biofilms on medical devices by introducing a portable antimicrobial catheter insert (PACI) designed to be efficient, biocompatible, and anti-infective. The PACI utilizes nitric oxide (NO), known for its potent antimicrobial properties, to deter bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. To achieve this, a photoinitiated NO donor, S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP), is covalently linked to a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer. This design allows for higher NO loading for long-term impact and prevents premature donor leaching, a common challenge with SNAP-blended polymers. The SNAP-PDMS material was applied to a side-glowing fiber optic and connected to a wearable light module emitting 450 nm light, creating a functional antimicrobial insert. Activation of the fiber optic, accomplished with a one-click mechanism, enables real-time NO release, maintaining controlled NO levels for a minimum of 24 hours. The therapeutic levels of NO released via photocatalysis from the PACI demonstrated remarkable efficacy, with >90 % reduction in bacterial viability against S. aureus, S. epidermidis, and P. mirabilis without any cytotoxic impact on mammalian cells. This study underscores the potential of the NO-releasing insert in clinical settings, providing a portable and adaptable solution for preventing catheter-associated infections.

Abstract
Studies have demonstrated bacterial inactivation by radiations at wavelengths between 400 and 500 nm emitted by low-power light sources. The phototoxic activity of these radiations could occur by oxidative damage in DNA and membrane proteins/lipids. However, some cellular mechanisms can reverse these damages in DNA, allowing the maintenance of genetic stability. Photoreactivation is among such mechanisms able to repair DNA damages induced by ultraviolet radiation, ranging from ultraviolet A to blue radiations. In this review, studies on the effects of violet and blue lights emitted by low-power LEDs on bacteria were accessed by PubMed, and discussed the repair of ultraviolet-induced DNA damage by photoreactivation mechanisms. Data from such studies suggested bacterial inactivation after exposure to violet (405 nm) and blue (425-460 nm) radiations emitted from LEDs. However, other studies showed bacterial photoreactivation induced by radiations at 348-440 nm. This process occurs by photolyase enzymes, which absorb photons at wavelengths and repair DNA damage. Although authors have reported bacterial inactivation after exposure to violet and blue radiations emitted from LEDs, pre-exposure to such radiations at low fluences could activate the photolyases, increasing resistance to DNA damage induced by ultraviolet radiation.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study was to investigate dual far-UVC (Ultraviolet-C) (222 nm) and blue LED (Light Emitting Diode) (405 nm) light on the inactivation of extended spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-Ec) and to determine if repetitive exposure to long pulses of light resulted in changes to light tolerance, and antibiotic susceptibility. METHODS AND RESULTS Antimicrobial efficiency of dual and individual light wavelengths and development of light tolerance in E. coli was evaluated through a spread plate method after exposure to light at 25 cm. Dual light exposure for 30 min resulted in a 5-6 log10 CFU mL-1 reduction in two ESBL-Ec and two antibiotic-sensitive control E. coli strains. The overall inhibition achieved by dual light treatment was always greater than the combined reductions (log10 CFU) observed from exposure to individual light wavelengths (combined 222-405 nm), indicating a synergistic relationship between blue LED and far-UVC light when used together. Repetitive long pulses of dual and individual far-UVC light exposure resulted in light tolerance in two ESBL-Ec strains but not the antibiotic-sensitive E. coli strains. Subsequent passages of repetitive light-treated ESBL-Ec strains continued to exhibit light tolerance. Antibiotic susceptibility was determined through a standard disk diffusion method. No changes were observed in the antibiotic susceptibility profiles for any of the four strains after exposure to either dual or individual wavelengths. CONCLUSIONS Dual light exposure was effective in the disinfection of ESBL-Ec in solution; however, antibiotic-resistant E. coli were able to develop light tolerance after repetitive exposure to light.

Abstract
Visible blue light of wavelengths in the 400–470 nm range has been observed to have microbicidal properties. A widely accepted hypothesis for the mechanism of microbial inactivation by visible blue light is that the light causes photoexcitation of either endogenous (present within the microbe) or, exogenous (present in the biological medium surrounding the microbe) photosensitizers such as porphyrins and flavins, which leads to the release of reactive oxygen species that subsequently manifests microbicidal activity. Some of the factors that have been observed to be associated with enhanced microbicidal action include increased duration of exposure, and either pre- or co-treatment with quinine hydrochloride. In case of bacteria, repetitive exposure to the blue light shows no significant evidence of resistance development. Additionally, visible blue light has exhibited the ability to inactivate fungal and viral pathogens and, multidrug-resistant bacteria as well as bacterial biofilms. Visible blue light has demonstrated efficacy in eliminating foodborne pathogens found on food surfaces and exposed surfaces in the food processing environment as well as in the decontamination of surfaces in the clinical environment to minimize the spread of nosocomial infections. We conclude from reviewing existing literature on the application of the blue light in clinical medicine and public health settings that this microbicidal light is emerging as a safer alternative to conventional ultraviolet light-based technologies in multiple settings. However, further comprehensive studies and thorough understanding of the mechanism of microbicidal action of this light in different scenarios is warranted to determine its place in human health and disease.

Abstract
Built environments play a key role in the transmission of infectious diseases. Ventilation rates, air temperature, and humidity affect airborne transmission while cleaning protocols, material properties and light exposure can influence viability of pathogens on surfaces. We investigated how indoor daylight intensity and spectrum through electrochromic (EC) windows can impact the growth rate and viability of indoor pathogens on different surface materials (polyvinyl chloride [PVC] fabric, polystyrene, and glass) compared to traditional blinds. Results showed that tinted EC windows let in higher energy, shorter wavelength daylight than those with clear window and blind. The growth rates of pathogenic bacteria and fungi were significantly lower in spaces with EC windows compared to blinds: nearly 100% growth rate reduction was observed when EC windows were in their clear state followed by 41%-100% reduction in bacterial growth rate and 26%-42% reduction in fungal growth rate when EC windows were in their darkest tint. Moreover, bacterial viabilities were significantly lower on PVC fabric when they were exposed to indoor light at EC-tinted window. These findings are deemed fundamental to the design of healthy modern buildings, especially those that encompass sick and vulnerable individuals.

Abstract
The titanium oxo complexes are widely studied, due to their potential applications in photocatalytic processes, environmental protection, and also in the biomedical field. The presented results concern the oxo complex synthesized in the reaction of titanium(IV) isobutoxide and acetylsalicylic acid (Hasp), in a 4:1 molar ratio. The structure of isolated crystals was solved using the single-crystal X-ray diffraction method. The analysis of these data proves that [Ti4O2(OiBu)10(asp)2]·H2O (1) complex is formed. Moreover, the molecular structure of (1) was characterized using vibrational spectroscopic techniques (IR and Raman), 13C NMR, and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS). The photocatalytic activity of the synthesized complex was determined with the use of composite foils produced by the dispersion of (1) micrograins, as the inorganic blocks, in a polycaprolactone (PCL) matrix (PCL + (1)). The introduction of (1) micrograins to the PCL matrix caused the absorption maximum shift up to 425–450 nm. The studied PCL + (1) composite samples reveal good activity toward photodecolorization of methylene blue after visible light irradiation.

Abstract
Foodborne illnesses present a major threat to public health and are frequently attributed to foodborne pathogens present on fresh produce. Some opportunistic pathogens of broccoli are also responsible for causing head rot. Three different light treatments, UV-C, red LED (50 μml/m2/s), and UV-C + LED were used to treat broccoli prior to or during storage. Following the light treatments, microorganisms present in eluates obtained from the surface of broccoli heads were characterized using a metagenomic approach. Metagenomic DNA libraries were subjected to high-throughput sequencing on an Illumina Hiseq platform. Results indicated that the combined treatment of LED red light and UV-C provided the best sensory preservation of broccoli, followed by LED red light and then UV-C. The bacterial communities in the eluates obtained from the surface of broccoli heads in all three light treatments were primarily represented at the phylum level by Proteobacteria and Firmicutes, while fungal communities were primarily represented by Ascomycota and Basidiomycota. Further analysis indicated that the all three light treatments reduced the presence of foodborne pathogens and bacterial taxa responsible for broccoli spoilage. While UV-C had a significant inhibitory effect on Botrytis cinerea, the light treatments increased the relative abundance of Pseudomonas fluorescens. Results indicate that a metagenomic approach can be used to detect pathogenic bacteria and fungi on fresh vegetables and assess the impact of management practices, such as light treatments, designed to maintain postharvest quality, on the composition of the microbiome present on the surface of harvested produce.

Abstract
Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) is an eco-friendly light source with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. Recent studies have extensively been conducted to evaluate its efficacy in microbiological safety and the potential as a preservation method to extend the shelf-life of foods. This review aims to present the latest update of recent studies on the basics (physical, biochemical and mechanical basics) and antimicrobial activity of LEDs, as well as its application in the food industry. The highlight will be focused on the effects of LEDs on different types (bacteria, yeast/molds, viruses) and forms (planktonic cells, biofilms, endospores, fungal toxin) of microorganisms. The antimicrobial activity of LEDs on various food matrices was also evaluated, together with further analysis on the food-related factors that lead to the differences in LEDs efficiency. Besides, the applications of LEDs on the food-related conditions, packaged food, and equipment that could enhance LEDs efficiency were discussed to explore the future trends of LEDs technology in the food industry. Overall, the present review provides important insights for future research and the application of LEDs in the food industry.

Abstract
Burn injury is debilitating and among one of the most frequently occurring traumas. Critical care improvements have allowed for increasingly positive outcomes. However, infection, whether it be localized to the site of the wound or systemic in nature, remains a serious cause of morbidity and mortality. Immune suppression predisposes the burn population to the development of invasive infections; and this along with the possibility of inhalation injury puts them at a significant risk for mortality. Emerging multi-drug-resistant pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Enterobacter, and yeast spp., continue to complicate clinical care measures, requiring innovative therapies and antimicrobial treatment. Close monitoring of antimicrobial regimens, strict decontamination procedures, early burn eschar removal, adequate wound closure, proper nutritional maintenance, and management of shock and resuscitation all play a significant role in mitigating infection. Novel antimicrobial therapies such as ultraviolet light, cold plasma and topical antiseptics must continue to evolve in order to lower the burden of infection in burn.

Abstract
Over the past decade, antimicrobial blue light (aBL) at 400 - 470 nm wavelength has demonstrated immense promise as an alternative approach for the treatment of multidrug-resistant infections. Since our last review was published in 2017, there have been numerous studies that have investigated aBL in terms of its, efficacy, safety, mechanism, and propensity for resistance development. In addition, researchers have looked at combinatorial approaches that exploit aBL and other traditional and non-traditional therapeutics. To that end, this review aims to update the findings from numerous studies that capitalize on the antimicrobial effects of aBL, with a focus on: efficacy of aBL against different microbes, identifying endogenous chromophores and targets of aBL, Resistance development to aBL, Safety of aBL against host cells, and Synergism of aBL with other agents. We will also discuss our perspective on the future of aBL.

Abstract
In order to maintain the original taste, flavors, and appearance, fresh foods usually do not go through complex processing prior to sale; this makes them prone to deterioration due to external factors. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have many unique advantages over traditional preservation technologies leading to their increasing application in the food industry. This paper reviews the luminescence principles of LED, the advantages of LED compared with traditional lighting equipment, and its possible preservation mechanism, and then critically summarizes the beneficial effects of LED irradiation on the ripening and aging process of various fruits and vegetables (climacteric and non-climacteric). The activity changes of many enzymes closely related to crop development and quality maintenance, and the variation of flavor components caused by LED irradiation are discussed. LED illumination with a specific spectrum also has the important effect of maintaining the original color and flavor of meat, seafood, and dairy products. For microorganisms attached to the surface of animal-derived food, both 400-460 nm LED irradiation based on photodynamic inactivation principle and UV-LED irradiation based on ultraviolet sterilization principle have high bactericidal efficacy. Although there is still a lack of useful standards for matching optimal LED irradiation dose with wavelength, perhaps in the near future, the improved LED irradiation system will be applied extensively in the food industry.

Abstract
Biofilms cause problems in the food industry due to their persistence and incompetent hygiene processing technologies. Interest in photodynamic inactivation (PDI) for combating biofilms has increased in recent years. This technique can induce microbial cell death, reduce cell attachment, ruin biofilm biomolecules and eradicate structured biofilms without inducing microbial resistance. This review addresses microbial challenges posed by biofilms in food environments and highlights the advantages of PDI in preventing and eradicating microbial biofilm communities. Current findings of the antibiofilm efficiencies of this technique are summarized. Additionally, emphasis is given to its potential mechanisms and factors capable of influencing biofilm communities, as well as promising hurdle strategies.

Abstract
Bioluminescence, the emission of light catalysed by luciferases, has evolved in many taxa from bacteria to vertebrates and is predominant in the marine environment. It is now well established that in animals possessing a nervous system capable of integrating light stimuli, bioluminescence triggers various behavioural responses and plays a role in intra- or interspecific visual communication. The function of light emission in unicellular organisms is less clear and it is currently thought that it has evolved in an ecological framework, to be perceived by visual animals. For example, while it is thought that bioluminescence allows bacteria to be ingested by zooplankton or fish, providing them with favourable conditions for growth and dispersal, the luminous flashes emitted by dinoflagellates may have evolved as an anti-predation system against copepods. In this short review, we re-examine this paradigm in light of recent findings in microorganism photoreception, signal integration and complex behaviours. Numerous studies show that on the one hand, bacteria and protists, whether autotrophs or heterotrophs, possess a variety of photoreceptors capable of perceiving and integrating light stimuli of different wavelengths. Single-cell light-perception produces responses ranging from phototaxis to more complex behaviours. On the other hand, there is growing evidence that unicellular prokaryotes and eukaryotes can perform complex tasks ranging from habituation and decision-making to associative learning, despite lacking a nervous system. Here, we focus our analysis on two taxa, bacteria and dinoflagellates, whose bioluminescence is well studied. We propose the hypothesis that similar to visual animals, the interplay between light-emission and reception could play multiple roles in intra- and interspecific communication and participate in complex behaviour in the unicellular world.

Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance is a global, mounting and dynamic issue that poses an immediate threat to human, animal, and environmental health. Among the alternative antimicrobial treatments proposed to reduce the external use of antibiotics is electromagnetic radiation, such as blue light. The prevailing mechanistic model is that blue light can be absorbed by endogenous porphyrins within the bacterial cell, inducing the production of reactive oxygen species, which subsequently inflict oxidative damages upon different cellular components. Nevertheless, it is unclear whether other mechanisms are involved, particularly those that can affect the efficacy of antimicrobial blue light treatments. In this review, we summarize evidence of inherent factors that may confer protection to a selected group of bacteria against blue light-induced oxidative damages or modulate the physiological characteristics of the treated bacteria, such as virulence and motility. These include descriptions of three major photoreceptors in bacteria, chemoreceptors, SOS-dependent DNA repair and non-SOS protective mechanisms. Future directions are also provided to assist with research efforts to increase the efficacy of antimicrobial blue light and to minimize the development of blue light-tolerant phenotypes.

Abstract
The detection and quantification of sublethal injury (SI) of pathogenic microorganisms has become a common procedure when assessing the efficiency of microbial inactivation treatments. However, while a plethora of studies investigates SI in function of time, no suitable modelling procedure for SI data has been proposed thus far. In this study, a new SI model structure was developed that relies on existing microbial inactivation models. This model is based on the description of inactivation kinetics between the subpopulations of healthy, sublethally injured and dead cells. The model was validated by means of case studies on previously published results, modelled by different inactivation models, i.e., (i) log-linear inactivation; (ii) biphasic inactivation; and (iii) log-linear inactivation with tailing. Results were compared to those obtained by the traditional method that relies on calculating SI from independent inactivation models on non-selective and selective media. The log-linear inactivation case study demonstrated that the SI model is equivalent to the use of independent models when there can be no mistake in calculating SI. The biphasic inactivation case study illustrated how the SI model avoids unrealistic calculations of SI that would otherwise occur. The final case study on log-linear inactivation with tailing clarified that the SI model provides a more mechanistic description than the independent models, in this case allowing the reduction of the number of model parameters. As such, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of the potential and applications for the newly presented SI model.

Abstract
Excessive misuse of antibiotics and antimicrobials has led to a spread of microorganisms resistant to most currently used agents. The resulting global threats has driven the search for new materials with optimal antimicrobial activity and their application in various areas of our lives. In our research, we focused on the formation of composite materials produced by the dispersion of titanium(IV)-oxo complexes (TOCs) in poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) matrix, which exhibit optimal antimicrobial activity. TOCs, of the general formula [Ti4O2(OiBu)10(O2CR’)2] (R’ = PhNH2 (1), C13H9 (2)) were synthesized as a result of the direct reaction of titanium(IV) isobutoxide and 4-aminobenzoic acid or 9-fluorenecarboxylic acid. The microcrystalline powders of (1) and (2), whose structures were confirmed by infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy, were dispersed in PCL matrixes. In this way, the composites PCL + nTOCs (n = 5 and 20 wt.%) were produced. The structure and physicochemical properties were determined on the basis of Raman microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR), and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The degree of TOCs distribution in the polymer matrix was monitored by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The addition of TOCs micro grains into the PCL matrix only slightly changed the thermal and mechanical properties of the composite compared to the pure PCL. Among the investigated PCL + TOCs systems, promising antibacterial properties were confirmed for samples of PCL + n(2) (n = 5, 20 wt.%) composites, which simultaneously revealed the best photocatalytic activity in the visible range.

Abstract
SARS-CoV-2 is a single-stranded RNA virus classified in the family Coronaviridae. In this review, we summarize the literature on light-based (UV, blue, and red lights) sanitization methods for the inactivation of ssRNA viruses in different matrixes (air, liquid, and solid). The rate of inactivation of ssRNA viruses in liquid was higher than in air, whereas inactivation on solid surfaces varied with the type of surface. The efficacy of light-based inactivation was reduced by the presence of absorptive materials. Several technologies can be used to deliver light, including mercury lamp (conventional UV), excimer lamp (UV), pulsed-light, and light-emitting diode (LED). Pulsed-light technologies could inactivate viruses more quickly than conventional UV-C lamps. Large-scale use of germicidal LED is dependent on future improvements in their energy efficiency. Blue light possesses virucidal potential in the presence of exogenous photosensitizers, although femtosecond laser (ultrashort pulses) can be used to circumvent the need for photosensitizers. Red light can be combined with methylene blue for application in medical settings, especially for sanitization of blood products. Future modelling studies are required to establish clearer parameters for assessing susceptibility of viruses to light-based inactivation. There is considerable scope for improvement in the current germicidal light-based technologies and practices.
