Comparative Analysis between Synthetic Vitamin E and Natural Antioxidant Sources from Tomato, Carrot and Coriander in Diets for Market-Sized Dicentrarchus labrax

Tomato pomace as a source of valuable functional ingredients for improving physicochemical and sensory properties and extending the shelf life of foods: A review

Due to its nutritional and bioactive content, tomato pomace (TP) remains among the world's richest fruits and vegetables. Tomatoes and TP (generated coproduct) are a very rich source of lycopene and other carotenoid compounds and contain an essential amount of polyphenols, policosanol, phytosterols, organic acids, dietary fibers, minerals, and vitamins. TP is a promising source of significant bioactive compounds with antioxidant and antimicrobial potential. Therefore, their consumption is known to be effective in preventing certain chronic diseases. For example, lycopene prevents prostate cancer and acts as a hepatoprotector and genoprotector against mycotoxins, pesticide residues, and heavy metals. Thus, the valorization of TP as a food ingredient can be of great health, economic and environmental interest and contribute to improving nutrition and food security. During the last decades, considerable efforts have been made to valorize TP as a crucial functional ingredient in improving: (i) the nutritional and functional properties, (ii) sensory characteristics and (iii) the shelf life of many foods. The current review aims to update and summarize the knowledge on the recent food applications of TP, particularly its use as a functional ingredient to improve the functional properties and shelf life of foods.

Consumer Expectation and Perception of Farmed Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Fed with Insect Meal (Tenebrio molitor)

In recent years, insect meal has attracted increasing interest as an innovative protein source to replace fish meal in feed formulations due to its valuable nutritional profile. This research aimed to compare the effects of different levels of dietary inclusion of the yellow mealworm beetle (T. molitor) larvae meal on the sensory quality of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fillets and retrospectively on the acceptability of this protein source to consumers. The results showed that the inclusion of T. molitor larvae meal did not induce sensory changes in the trout fillets, while regarding consumer acceptability and willingness to buy and pay, it was shown that a certain level of rejection towards this alternative protein still exists. The work described in this scientific manuscript adds more knowledge on the study of consumer acceptability of this protein source.

Microplastics in water, feed and tissues of European seabass reared in a recirculation aquaculture system (RAS)

Plastic particles (PLs) are ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems and aquaculture production is susceptible to contamination from external or endogenous sources. This study investigated PL presence in water, fish feed and body sites of 55 European seabass produced in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). Fish morphometric parameters and health status biomarkers were determined. A total of 372 PLs were recovered from water (37.2 PL/L), 118 PLs from feed (3.9 PL/g), and 422 from seabass (0.7 PL/g fish; all body sites analysed). All 55 specimens had PLs in at least two of the four body sites analysed. Concentrations were higher in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT; 1.0 PL/g) and gills (0.8 PL/g) than in the liver (0.8 PL/g) and muscle (0.4 PL/g). PL concentration in GIT was significantly higher than in muscle. Black, blue, and transparent fibres made of man-made cellulose/rayon and polyethylene terephthalate were the most common PLs in water and seabass, while black fragments of phenoxy resin were the most common in feed. The levels of polymers linked to RAS components (polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyvinyl chloride) were low suggesting a limited contribution to the overall PL levels found in water and/or fish. The mean PL size recovered from GIT (930 μm) and gills (1047 μm) was significantly larger than those found in the liver (647 μm) and dorsal muscle (425 μm). Considering all body sites, PLs bioconcentrated in seabass (BCF_Fish >1) but their bioaccumulation did not occur (BAF_Fish <1). No significant differences were observed in oxidative stress biomarkers between fish with low (<7) and high (≥7) PL numbers. These findings suggest that fish produced in RAS are mainly exposed to MPs through water and feed. Further monitoring under commercial conditions and risk assessment are warranted to identify potential threats to fish and human health and define mitigating measures.

Curcumin loaded liposome formulation: Enhanced efficacy on performance, flesh quality, immune response with defense against Streptococcus agalactiae in Nile tilapia (Orechromis niloticus)

Application of novel trend comprising antioxidant phytogenics is aiming to minimize the stress related factors and associated diseases in intensive fish culturing. Today, the concept of exploiting and protecting natural antioxidants represents a paradigm shift for the aqua feed industry. Therefore, our principal goal targeting liposome as a novel nanocarrier for curcumin is directed to attain superior performance, fillet antioxidant stability and bacterial resistance in Nile tilapia. A total of 500 Nile tilapia fingerlings (average body weight, 10.27 ± 0.10 g) assigned into five experimental groups in 25 glass aquaria of 120 L capacity at the density 20 fish/aquaria. The experimental groups were supplemented with varying doses of liposomal curcumin-NPs, LipoCur-NPs (0, 5, 15, 25 and 35 mg/kg diet) were reared for 12 weeks and later Streptococcus agalactiae (S. agalactiae) challenged model was performed. Inclusion of LipoCur-NPs (25 and 35 mg/kg diet) had the most prominent impact on Nile tilapia growth rate and feed conversion ratio. The immune boosting outcomes post supplementing 35 mg/kg diet of LipoCur-NPs were evidenced by higher myeloperoxidase, lysozyme and total immunoglobulin levels. Even after 4 weeks frozen storage, LipoCur-NPs at the dose of 35 mg/kg diet prominently increased (P < 0.05) the fillet scavenging capability for free radicals (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-Azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) with an inverse reduction in lipid peroxidation biomarker (malondialdehyde). Notably, upregulation of GSH-Px, CAT, and SOD genes in fillet of 35 mg/kg LipoCur-NPs fed fish coordinated with higher T-AOC and lower oxidative markers (ROS and H₂O₂). Post S. agalactiae challenge, higher supplementation levels of LipoCur-NPs (35 mg/kg diet) greatly attenuated the expression of its vital virulence genes (cfb, fbsA and cpsA) with higher expression of Igm, CXC-chemokine and MHC genes. Concordantly, downregulation of inflammatory markers (IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-8) and upregulation of anti-inflammatory ones (IL-10 and TGF-β) were remarkably documented. Based on these findings, the innovative curcumin loaded liposome was considered a novel multitargeting alternative not only playing an imperative role in Nile tilapia growth promotion and fillet stability upon storage, but also protecting efficiently against S. agalactiae.

Multiomics provides insights into the succession of microbiota and metabolite during plant leaf fermentation

The quality of fermented plant products is closely related to microbial metabolism. Here, the associations of bacterial communities, metabolites, and functional genes were explored using multi-omics techniques based on plant leaf fermentation systems. The results showed significant changes in the structure of the microbial community, with a significant decrease in Firmicutes and a significant increase in Proteobacteria. In addition, the concentration of metabolites with antibacterial, antioxidant and aroma properties increased significantly, enhancing the quality of the fermented plant leaves. Integrated macrogenomic and metabolomic analyses indicated that amino acid metabolism could be key metabolic pathway affecting fermentation quality. Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes were actively involved in tyrosine metabolism (ko00350) and phenylalanine metabolism (ko00360), and are presumed to be the major groups responsible for synthesizing growth and flavor compounds. This study emphasized the important role of microorganisms in the changes of metabolites during the fermentation of plant leaves.

Antioxidant Potential of Santowhite as Synthetic and Ascorbic Acid as Natural Polymer Additives

A wide variety of additives are used to improve specific characteristics of the final polymeric product. Antioxidant additives (AAs) can prevent oxidative stress and thus the damage of polymeric materials. In this work, the antioxidant potential and thus the applicability of Santowhite (SW) as synthetic and ascorbic acid (Asc) as natural AAs were explored by using computational tools. Two density functional theory (DFT) methods, M05-2X and M06-2X, have been applied in combination with the 6-311++G(2d,2p) basis set in gas phase. Three antioxidant mechanisms have been considered: hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), single electron transfer-proton transfer (SET-PT), and sequential proton loss electron transfer (SPLET). Bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE), ionization potential (IP), proton dissociation enthalpy (PDE), proton affinity (PA), and electron transfer enthalpy (ETE) have been computed for each potential hydrogen donor site. The results indicate that the antioxidant potential of Asc is higher than SW. Furthermore, some of the C-H bonds, depending on their position in the structures, are potent radical scavengers, but O-H groups are more prone to donate H-atoms to free radicals. Nonetheless, both additives can be potentially applied to safeguard common polymers and prohibit oxidative stress-induced material deterioration.
