Abstract
Multifunctional green food packaging films were developed by incorporating Koelreuteria paniculata Laxm. bract extract (KBE) and bio-waste-derived Ti-doped carbon dots (Ti-CDs) into a chitosan/locust bean gum (CG) matrix for the first time. Results from FTIR and XRD demonstrated the precise bonding of Ti-CDs to CG through a Schiff base reaction and hydrogen bonding, while KBE was effectively immobilized within the film matrix via hydrogen bonding. SEM and TGA analysis demonstrated enhanced thermal stability and density of the films. Addition of Ti-CDs synergistically improved the barrier properties and mechanical strength of the films through enhanced hydrogen bonding and Schiff base reactions. Specifically, the incorporation of 3 wt% Ti-CDs increased the oxygen barrier properties, tensile strength, water resistance, and vapor permeability of CG films by approximately 1.18, 0.75, and 1.51 times, respectively. Furthermore, the antimicrobial and antioxidant capabilities were significantly improved with the addition of KBE to films. The CG-3%CDs-KBE film coating effectively prolonged the shelf life of strawberries. Additionally, these films exhibited superior pH responsiveness and ammonia-sensitivity, enabling visual monitoring of shrimp freshness during storage. Importantly, CG-3%CDs-KBE films exhibited biodegradability in soil and displayed good biosafety. Overall, these findings underscore the promising potential of CG-3%CDs-KBE films as multifunctional green food packaging materials.

Abstract
Carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) were obtained by using microwave irradiation under the same conditions. However, different carbogenic precursors were used, such as aromatic diamine molecules, ortho-phenylenediamine (o-OPDA), and 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid (3,4-DABA). Both carbon nanoparticles showed different structural results based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy analyses. However, there are similar spectroscopic (UV-visible and fluorescence emission) profiles. The photophysical results, like quantum yield (QY) and fluorescence lifetime, were not identical; CPDs-OPDA has a higher QY and fluorescence lifetime than CPDs-3,4-DABA. CPDs-3,4-DABA presents a more hydrophobic character than CPDs-OPDA and has a more negative superficial charge. Cell viability studies in both standard and tumor lines demonstrated higher cytotoxicity from CPDs-OPDA than that from CPDs-3,4-DABA. The oxidative stress identified in cells treated with CPDs-OPDA was based on reactive oxygen species and associated with nitric oxide production. CPDs-3,4-DABA showed more DPHH inhibition than CPDs-OPDA, indicating the antioxidant activity of CPDs.

Abstract
Sustainable carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based active composite films were developed through the addition of polyphenol-rich extract from coffee husk (CHE) and carbon dots (CDs) prepared using the biowaste residue of CHE extraction. The influences of various CDs contents on the physicochemical and functional characteristics of composite films have been researched. The 6% (w/w) CHE and 3% (w/w) CDs were uniformly dispersed within the CMC matrix to produce a homogenous film with enhanced mechanical properties. The CMC/CHE/CDs3% film exhibited outstanding UV-light blocking, improved water and gas barriers, potent antioxidant activity with above 95% DPPH and ABTS scavenging rates, and effective antibacterial capabilities against L. monocytogenes and E. coli. The food packaging experiment demonstrated that this active composite film slowed the rotting of fresh-cut apples and extended their shelf-life to 7 days at 4 °C storage. Therefore, the obtained multifunctional film showed promise as an environmentally friendly food packaging material.

Abstract
The extensive utilization of bismuth and its derivatives in many industries, such as chemical, semiconductor, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics, leads to their accumulation in wastewater, posing a risk to both human health and the environment. Carbon nanorods (CNR) are fluorescent nanoparticles with an ability to detect various analytes as sensing probes. This study focuses on the production, structure, and chemical composition characterization of silkworm-derived CNR (swCNR) and their ability to detect bismuth ions (Bi3+) and inhibit radicals. The optimum wavelength for exciting the fluorescence of swCNR was 370 nm, and the resulting emission peak was observed at 436 nm. The prepared swCNR showed static fluorescence quenching mechanism-based sensing of Bi3+ ions with a limit of detection of 175 nM and two linear ranges from 0.5 to 5 μM (R2 = 0.9997) and 10-50 μM (R2 = 0.9995). The swCNR demonstrated high selectivity in detecting Bi3+ ions in the spiked river water samples, thus establishing the swCNR's role as a nano fluorescence probe designed for the selective detection of Bi3+ ions among other metal ions. Favorable results for the antiradical ability of swCNR were obtained against hydroxyl, 2,2 diphenyl-1 picrylhydrazyl, and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radicals with scavenging percentages of 15, 32, and 90, respectively. The possible applications of swCNR in the environmental and antioxidant sectors are proposed in this study.

Abstract
The corruption of refrigerated marine fish results in global economic losses exceeding 25 billion euros annually. However, conventional preservatives present challenges, including singular functionality, potential toxicity, and high cost. In response, we developed multifunctional, safe, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly carbon dots derived from radish residues (R-CDs) by using the one-pot hydrothermal method. The surface of R-CDs is enriched with hydroxyl groups, conferring broad-spectrum antioxidant and antibacterial characteristics. R-CDs exhibited a notable 72.92 % inhibition rate on lipid peroxidation, surpassing the effectiveness of vitamin C (46 %). Additionally, R-CDs demonstrated impressive scavenging rates of 93.8 % for 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radicals and 99.36 % for 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid-free radicals. In combating spoilage bacteria such as Aeromonas sobria and Hafnia alvei, R-CDs disrupted cell structures and influenced intracellular substance content. Importantly, co-cultivation with R-CDs showed no significant cytotoxicity. Further incorporating R-CDs into films using starch and chitosan (S/CS/R-CDs films) for efficient and convenient use in salmon fillets preservation. S/CS/R-CDs films effectively inhibited the growth of spoilage bacteria, lipid oxidation, and protein decomposition in salmon fillets, thereby extending shelf life by 4 days. This combination of antioxidant and antibacterial properties in R-CDs, along with the functional films, presents a promising approach for enhancing salmon fillet preservation.

Abstract
Packaging plays an important role in protecting food from environmental impacts. However, traditional petroleum-based packaging has difficulty in meeting the antimicrobial and antioxidant requirements of prepared foods. This study introduced carbon dots (CDs), prepared by using carrot as a precursor, into corn starch (CS) to construct a bio-friendly composite film with high freshness retention properties. The scavenging of DPPH radicals reached 92.77 % at a CDs concentration of 512 µg/mL, and the antimicrobial activity of CS/5% CDs against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was increased to 99.9 %. Notably, the homogeneous doping of CDs creates a dense surface and high carbon content inside the film, which promotes the elasticity and thermal stability of the composite film. Finally, we encapsulated deep-fried meatballs in CS-CDs films. The results showed that the CS-CDs films effectively protected the quality of deep-fried meatballs, and have excellent potential for application in food preservation.

Abstract
Carbon dots (CDs) were derived using eggplant peel by a hydrothermal approach and incorporated into the carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and gelatin (Gel) blend to develop sustainable and functional packaging films for fruit preservation. The CD was uniformly dispersed within the CMC/Gel blend to form a dense and continuous film and fashioned a strong interaction with the polymer chain, increasing the tensile strength of the film by 5.0-16.0 %. Also, with the impregnation of CDs, the UV-blocking potential of the CMC/Gel film was greatly improved to the extent of blocking 94.3 % of UV-B and 72.5 % of UV-A, while the water vapor permeability slightly decreased (by 2.7-5.4 %), and the water contact angle of the film marginally expand (by 6.2-19.1 %). The CMC/Gel film with 3 wt% of CD added depicted strong antioxidant efficacy of 100 % against ABTS and 59.1 % against DPPH and displayed strong antibacterial action that inhibited the progress of Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli by 99.8 %. In addition, when table grapes were packaged using a CMC/Gel composite film containing CD and stored at 4 °C for 24 days, the fruits packed with the composite film maintained excellent external quality and extended the shelf life.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori colonizes over 50% of people worldwide. Biofilm formation through penetrating gastric mucus and resistance acquired by H. pylori markedly reduces the efficacy of traditional antibiotics. The present triple therapy and bismuth-based quadruple therapy inevitably causes intestinal flora disturbance and fails to address the excessive H. pylori-triggered inflammatory response. Herein, a mucus-permeable therapeutic platform (Cu-MOF@NF) that consists of copper-bearing metal-organic framework (Cu-MOF) loaded with nitrogen-doped carbon dots and naturally active polysaccharide fucoidan is developed. The experimental results demonstrate that Cu-MOF@NF can penetrate the mucus layer and hinder H. pylori from adhering on gastric epithelial cells of the stomach. Notably, released Cu2+ can degrade the polysaccharides in the biofilm and interfere with the cyclic growing mode of "bacterioplankton ↔ biofilm", thereby preventing recurrent and persistent infection. Compared with traditional triple therapy, the Cu-MOF@NF not only possesses impressive antibacterial effect (even include multidrug-resistant strains), but also improves the inflammatory microenvironment without disrupting the balance of intestinal flora, providing a more efficient, safe, and antibiotic-free new approach to eradicating H. pylori.

Abstract
This study aimed to develop a multifunctional active composite film to extend the shelf life of minced pork. The composite film was prepared by incorporating zinc-doped grapefruit peel-derived carbon quantum dots (Zn-GFP-CD) into a cellulose nanofiber (CNF) matrix. The resulting film significantly improved UV-blocking properties from 39.0 % to 85.7 % while maintaining the film transparency. Additionally, the CNF/Zn-GFP-CD5% composite film exhibits strong antioxidant activity with ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities of 99.8 % and 77.4 %, respectively. The composite film also showed excellent antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. When used in minced pork packaging, the composite films effectively inhibit bacterial growth, maintaining bacterial levels below 7 Log CFU/g after 15 days and sustaining a red color over a 21-day storage period. Additionally, a significant reduction in the lipid oxidation of the minced pork was observed. These CNF/Zn-GFP-CD composite films have a great potential for active food packaging applications to extend shelf life and maintain the visual quality of packaged meat.

Abstract
Active packaging is an innovative approach to prolonge the shelf-life of food products while ensuring their quality and safety. Carbon dots (CDs) from biomass as active fillers for biopolymer films have been introduced to improve their bioactivities as well as properties. Gelatin/chitosan (G/C) blend films containing active guava leaf powder carbon dots (GL-CDs) at various levels (0-3%, w/w) were prepared by the solvent casting method and characterized. Thickness of the control increased from 0.033 to 0.041 mm when 3% GL-CDs were added (G/C-CD-3%). Young's modulus of the resulting films increased (485.67-759.00 MPa), whereas the tensile strength (26.92-17.77 MPa) and elongation at break decreased (14.89-5.48%) as the GL-CDs' level upsurged (p < 0.05). Water vapor barrier property and water contact angle of the film were enhanced when incorporated with GL-CDs (p < 0.05). GL-CDs had a negligible impact on film microstructure, while GL-CDs interacted with gelatin or chitosan, as determined by FTIR. The release of GL-CDs from blend films was more pronounced in water than in alcoholic solutions (10-95% ethanol). The addition of GL-CDs improved the UV light barrier properties and antioxidant activities of the resultant films in a dose-dependent manner. Thus, GL-CD-added gelatin/chitosan blend films with antioxidant activities could be employed as potential active packaging for the food industry.

Abstract
Micro(nano)plastics (MNPs) are pervasive environmental pollutants that individuals eventually consume. Despite this, little is known about MNP's impact on public health. In this article, we assess the evidence for potentially harmful consequences of MNPs in the human body, concentrating on molecular toxicity and exposure routes. Since MNPs are present in various consumer products, foodstuffs, and the air we breathe, exposure can occur through ingestion, inhalation, and skin contact. MNPs exposure can cause mitochondrial oxidative stress, inflammatory lesions, and epigenetic modifications, releasing specific non-coding RNAs in circulation, which can be detected to diagnose non-communicable diseases. This article examines the most fascinating smart carbon-based nanobiosensors for detecting circulating non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs and microRNAs). Carbon-based smart nanomaterials offer many advantages over traditional methods, such as ease of use, sensitivity, specificity, and efficiency, for capturing non-coding RNAs. In particular, the synthetic methods, conjugation chemistries, doping, and in silico approach for the characterization of synthesized carbon nanodots and their adaptability to identify and measure non-coding RNAs associated with MNPs exposure is discussed. Furthermore, the article provides insights into the use of artificial intelligence tools for designing smart carbon nanomaterials.

Abstract
Carrageenan-based active/intelligent packaging films containing anthocyanin and ZnO-doped CD (Zn-CD) from purple Kohlrabi peels were prepared for freshness monitoring and shelf-life extension of shrimp, and the influence of additives on the films' physical, functional, and structural properties was investigated. The films showed excellent UV blocking ability (85.2% of UV-A and 99.4% of UV-B) and high antioxidant effect (∼99% for ABTS and ∼ 58.6% for DPPH radical scavenging activity) and showed strong antibacterial activity to stop the growth (100%) of L. monocytogenes and to reduce the growth of E. coli by 8.1 log CFU/mL after 12 h of incubation. In shrimp packaging experiments, the films were evident in the freshness monitoring, reduced spoilage, and increased shelf life. This study suggests that next-generation biopolymer films impregnated with biomass-derived CDs and natural colorants will provide broad directions for ensuring safety and extending shelf life to meet the accelerating demand for packaging products.

Abstract
Addressing the global challenge of persistent waste through an eco-conscious strategy to transform it into valuable and versatile materials holds great significance in today's swiftly evolving world. By adopting a sustainable approach, we can repurpose waste syringes composed of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) into fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) using a simple hydrothermal process. This research harnessed hyaluronic acid to carbonize and modify discarded plastic syringes, resulting in the creation of luminescent syringe carbon dots (SCDs). Rigorous analysis employing diverse techniques delved into their optical attributes, size distribution, and surface characteristics. Extensive biocompatibility assessments using established assay methods confirmed the safety of the derived SCDs, unveiling their potential antibacterial and antifungal traits. Additionally, a confocal microscope was employed to evaluate the cellular imaging capabilities of SCDs on HeLa cells. Notably, at bactericidal concentrations, SCDs exhibited mild cytotoxicity towards mammalian cells, showcasing cell viability surpassing 91.07% at 1 mg/mL. This pioneering exploration paves the way for potential applications of SCD-based nano-bactericides across various biomedical domains. The initial outcomes established herein mark a significant stride towards the creation of cost-effective and ecologically sound fluorescent probes for biomedical imaging, aimed at combating microbial infections. By ingeniously reutilizing polyethylene terephthalate (PET), this investigation offers a sustainable remedy to address the ecological predicaments linked with plastic waste. In doing so, it charts a course towards contributing to the development of affordable, eco-friendly solutions, heralding a promising prospect for a cleaner, healthier environment.

Abstract
In this work, luminescent carbon dots with gardenia seeds as carbon precursors (GCDs) were synthesized using a one-step mild pyrolysis process and were then used as probes for imaging of bacterial (Escherichia coli). The GCDs showed a strong emission at 430 nm when excited at 370 nm. The relative fluorescence quantum yield of GCDs was found to be 1.13% in an aqueous medium. Rapid internalization of the GCDs by bacteria was confirmed by three colors (blue, green, and yellow) images that were obtained using confocal fluorescence microscopy. In addition, GCDs were noted to exhibit potent scavenging activities against DPPH˙, ˙OH, and ˙O2- free radicals. GCDs were also assayed as antioxidants in an oil sample by volumetric determination of the peroxide value. Thus, GCDs exhibited good antioxidant properties both in aqueous and oil media. In addition, a free fatty acid quantification kit in the presence of GCDs showed enhanced fluorescence detection of palmitic acid with a remarkably good limit of detection of 0.08 μM, which is lower than that in the absence of GCDs (0.76 μM). The proposed fluorescence method was then successfully used to determine the concentration of palmitic acid spiked in milk powder samples, with spiked recoveries of 82.6-109.6% and relative standard deviations of 0.9-4.6%.

Abstract
Carbon dots (CDs) were manufactured with banana peels using a hydrothermal method (200 °C for 6 h). The synthesized CDs were spherical particles with a size of 1-3 nm having carboxyl groups and amine groups on the surface. CDs have been impregnated into chitosan/gelatin films to synthesize multifunctional packaging films. The composite film showed a slight decrease in transparency but a significant increase in UV protection properties. The fabricated film displayed strong antioxidant efficacy showing >74 % DPPH and 99 % ABTS radical scavenging potential. The film also unveiled substantial antibacterial activity against the foodborne pathogenic bacteria, Listeria monocytogenes, fully eliminating the growth of these bacteria within 6 h of exposure. The chitosan/gelatin film containing CD was used for minced meat packaging, and the film delayed bacterial growth (< 1 Log CFU/g after 24 h) and maintained the meat color even after 24 h of storage at 20 °C. The CD-added chitosan/gelatin functional film has a high probability of application in active food packaging, especially for extending the shelf life of packaged meat and maintaining its aesthetic quality.

Abstract
Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are an emerging class of novel carbon nanomaterials (< 10 nm). These zero-dimensional CQDs have recently invoked significant interest due to their high fluorescence ability, strong electronic conductivity, biocompatibility, excellent chemical stability, non-toxicity, and environmental safety. Bio-fabrication of CQDs from organic resources remains attractive owing to their excellent functional properties. An emerging class of CQDs is fabricated by various conventional methods. However, these methods need many chemical agents and instrument facilities. Bio-fabrication of CQDs has a lot of benefits because of its simple fabrication and eco-friendly. Therefore, the green synthesized CQDs are considered optimistic candidates for developing novel functional materials for food packaging applications. Thus, it is important to investigate the latest update on green-based CQDs for food packaging applications. This current review paper discusses the physicochemical properties of CQDs, the bio-fabrication of CQDs, and the fluorescent properties of CQDs along with their food packaging applications.

Abstract
The large number of deaths induced by carcinoma and infections indicates that the need for new, better, targeted therapy is higher than ever. Apart from classical treatments and medication, photodynamic therapy (PDT) is one of the possible approaches to cure these clinical conditions. This strategy offers several advantages, such as lower toxicity, selective treatment, faster recovery time, avoidance of systemic toxic effects, and others. Unfortunately, there is a small number of agents that are approved for usage in clinical PDT. Novel, efficient, biocompatible PDT agents are, thus, highly desired. One of the most promising candidates is represented by the broad family of carbon-based quantum dots, such as graphene quantum dots (GQDs), carbon quantum dots (CQDs), carbon nanodots (CNDs), and carbonized polymer dots (CPDs). In this review paper, these new smart nanomaterials are discussed as potential PDT agents, detailing their toxicity in the dark, and when they are exposed to light, as well as their effects on carcinoma and bacterial cells. The photoinduced effects of carbon-based quantum dots on bacteria and viruses are particularly interesting, since dots usually generate several highly toxic reactive oxygen species under blue light. These species are acting as bombs on pathogen cells, causing various devastating and toxic effects on those targets.

Abstract
Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) generates oxygen and hydrogen at the anode and cathode, respectively, by conducting protons generated at the anode to the cathode through a proton exchange membrane (PEM). The performance of PEMWE can be improved with faster catalytic reactions at each electrode; thus, the development of a PEM with excellent ionic conductivity and physicochemical stability is essential. Nafion, a type of perfluoro-sulfonic acid polymer, is the most widely used PEM material. However, despite its excellent conductivity and chemical stability, it exhibits high hydrogen permeability due to its structural characteristics. Quantum dots (QDs) have a hydrophilic functional group that can act as an ion conductor and are extremely compatible with the hydrophilic cluster of Nafion due to their characteristic nanosized structure. In this study, various compositions of N-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) containing hydrophilic functional groups were coated on a Nafion-212 membrane. The resulting series of CQD-coated Nafion membranes exhibited improvements in morphology and ionic conductivity as well as reductions in hydrogen permeability. In particular, the Nafion membrane coated with 0.75 wt % of N-doped CQD (CQD-cNafion-0.75) exhibited improved mechanical properties and higher oxidation stability compared to Nafion-212. It also displayed higher ionic conductivity of 240.3 mS cm-1 at 80 °C and reduced hydrogen permeability (about 10% reduction) compared to Nafion-212. In addition, the performance of single-cell PEMWE using the CQD-cNafion-0.75 membrane was found to be approximately 1.2 times higher than Nafion-212.

Abstract
Nanoparticles are attractive, functional additives with great potential to be applied in biomaterial and food packaging. However, these particles are not soluble in water, thus limiting their widespread application. Here, we report a facile fabrication of carbon dots (CDs) using the spent coffee ground as the carbon source through a hydrothermal method. The CD was added to the gelatin/poly(vinyl alcohol) (Gel/PVA) film and grapefruit seed extract (GSE) to prepare multifunctional packaging films. The functional films' physiochemical and functional properties and packaging application were investigated. The composite film showed good UV protection properties with a slight decrease in transparency. The composite film containing CD/GSE showed strong antioxidant activity, scavenging >38 % DPPH and 100 % ABTS radicals. The film also exhibited significant antibacterial activity against the foodborne pathogens Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli, completely eradicating the growth of these bacteria within 9 h of exposure. The CD/GSE-incorporated Gel/PVA films were used for pork packaging. The films were able to enhance the pork shelf life by reducing the L. monocytogenes bacterial growth in meat by 2 Log CFU/mL lower than the control wrapping film. The multifunctional Gel/PVA films are expected to be used for the active packaging of meat products.

Abstract
Currently, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have emerged as potential risks for humans due to adopting a sedentary lifestyle and inaccurate diagnoses. The early detection of NCDs using point-of-care technologies significantly decreases the burden and will be poised to transform clinical intervention and healthcare provision. An imbalance in the levels of circulating cell-free microRNAs (ccf-miRNA) has manifested in NCDs, which are passively released into the bloodstream or actively produced from cells, improving the efficacy of disease screening and providing enormous sensing potential. The effective sensing of ccf-miRNA continues to be a significant technical challenge, even though sophisticated equipment is needed to analyze readouts and expression patterns. Nanomaterials have come to light as a potential solution as they provide significant advantages over other widely used diagnostic techniques to measure miRNAs. Particularly, CNDs-based fluorescence nano-biosensors are of great interest. Owing to the excellent fluorescence characteristics of CNDs, developing such sensors for ccf-microRNAs has been much more accessible. Here, we have critically examined recent advancements in fluorescence-based CNDs biosensors, including tools and techniques used for manufacturing these biosensors. Green synthesis methods for scaling up high-quality, fluorescent CNDs from a natural source are discussed. The various surface modifications that help attach biomolecules to CNDs utilizing covalent conjugation techniques for multiple applications, including self-assembly, sensing, and imaging, are analyzed. The current review will be of particular interest to researchers interested in fluorescence-based biosensors, materials chemistry, nanomedicine, and related fields, as we focus on CNDs-based nano-biosensors for ccf-miRNAs detection applications in the medical field.

Abstract
Fluorescent Carbon dots (CDs) derived from biologically active sources have shown enhanced activities compared to their precursors. With their prominent potentiality, these small-sized (<10nm) nanomaterials could be easily synthesized from organic sources either by bottom-up or green approach. Their sources could influence the functional groups present on the CDs surfaces. A crude source of organic molecules has been used to develop fluorescent CDs. In addition, pure organic molecules were also valuable in developing practical CDs. Physiologically responsive interaction of CDs with various cellular receptors is possible due to the robust functionalization on their surface. In this review, we studied various literatures from the past ten years that reported the potential application of carbon dots as alternatives in cancer chemotherapy. The selective cytotoxic nature of some of the CDs towards cancer cell lines suggests the role of surface functional groups towards selective interaction, which results in over-expressed proteins characteristic of cancer cell lines. It could be inferred that cheaply sourced CDs could selectively bind to overexpressed proteins in cancer cells with the ultimate effect of cell death induced by apoptosis. In most cases, CDs-induced apoptosis directly or indirectly follows the mitochondrial pathway. Therefore, these nanosized CDs could serve as alternatives to the current kinds of cancer treatments that are expensive and have numerous side effects.

Abstract
The deterioration of oil-based products during processing, distribution and storage has a major negative impact on the industry from an economic point of view. The spoilage of oil is mainly due to its oxidation which can be triggered by various factors, such as UV light, heating or the presence of impurities that result in the formation of radical species. In this context, several packaging alternatives have recently been developed with the aim to protect and extend the shelf life of oil-based products. This work aimed to study the antioxidant properties of bio-polymer-based films (BPFs) obtained from high methoxylated pectin (HMP) and sodium caseinate (CAS) and enriched with different concentrations of green carbon dots (gCDs), 0.25%, 0.50 and 1% w/w, obtained from apple pomace (APCDs) and rosemary powder (RCDs). The resulting films (gCDs-BPFs) have shown that the presence of gCDs not only modified the surface roughness of the films, but also positively affected their antioxidant properties. The addition of gCDs enhanced the radical inhibiting capacity of the raw BPFs by 42 and 62% for the films containing 1% RCDs and 1% APCDs, respectively. As a proof of the concept, two oil samples (edible and cosmetic) were treated with the obtained antioxidant films, and the results demonstrated that in both types of samples the oxidation process was minimized during the five days of the experiment. These results are promising and suggest that the antioxidant bio-polymer-based films could be excellent candidates for further production of active packaging.

Abstract
Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized using glucose as a carbon source through a hydrothermal method. CQDs showed negligible cytotoxicity to L929 cells even after prolonged exposure of 72 h. The addition of CQD did not affect the pectin film's mechanical properties, water contact angle, and thermal stability. However, the CQD-added composite film generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), providing high antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria (L. monocytogenes and E. coli) and antifungal activity against mold (Aspergillus flavus), where a 100% eradication of bacteria and fungi population was observed. Also, the addition of CQD strengthens the antioxidant activity of the composite films by 95%. Further, the CQD-added pectin film converted ultraviolet rays into blue light, which improved the film's UV protection properties. Therefore, the pectin/CQD film has a high potential for a light conversion active packaging film that may prevent the deterioration of high-fat foods.

Abstract
Sulfur quantum dots (SQDs) were fabricated using a facile hydrothermal method and used for the preparation of functional food packaging film and compared the properties with other sulfur-based fillers like elemental sulfur (ES) and sulfur nanoparticles (SNP). The SQDs have an average size of 5.3 nm and were very stable in aqueous suspension. Unlike other sulfur-based fillers, the SQD showed high antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal activity, but no cytotoxicity was found for L929 mouse fibroblasts even after long-term exposure of 48 h. When sulfur-based fillers were added to the alginate film, SQD was more evenly dispersed in the polymer matrix than SNP and ES. The addition of SQD to the alginate film increased the film's UV barrier property by 82% and tensile strength by 18%. Also, the addition of SQDs to the films did not affect the stiffness (elastic modulus, EM) and water vapor barrier permeability (WVP) of the films. In addition, SQD-added films exhibited excellent antioxidant and strong antibacterial activity against bacterial (E. coli and L. monocytogenes) and fungal (A. niger and P. chrysogenum) food pathogens. When the film was applied as a bread packaging test, the SQD-added film prevented mold growth for 14 days, unlike the ES and SNP-added films.

Abstract
In this study, a total of 302 molecular structures of phenylnaphthylamine antioxidants based on N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine and N-phenyl-2-naphthylamine skeletons with various substituents were modeled by exhaustive methods. Antioxidant parameters, including the hydrogen dissociation energy, solubility parameter, and binding energy, were calculated through molecular simulations. Then, a group decomposition scheme was determined to decompose 302 antioxidants. The antioxidant parameters and decomposition results constituted machine-learning data sets. Using an artificial neural network model, a correlation coefficient between the predicted and true values above 0.88 and an average relative error within 6% were achieved. Random forest models were used to analyze the factors affecting antioxidant activity from chemical and physical perspectives; the results showed that amino and alkyl groups were conducive to improving antioxidant performance. Moreover, substituent positions 1, 7, and 10 of N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine and 3, 7, and 10 of N-phenyl-2-naphthylamine were found to be the optimal positions for modifications to improve antioxidant activity. Two potentially efficient phenylnaphthylamine antioxidant structures were proposed and their antioxidant parameters were also calculated; the hydrogen dissociation energy and solubility parameter decreased by more than 9% and 7%, respectively, whereas the binding energy increased by more than 16% compared with the benchmark of N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine. These results indicate that molecular simulation and machine learning could provide alternative tools for the molecular design of new antioxidants.

Abstract
Synthesis of casein-derived carbon nanodots (CND) using a microwave-assisted approach, giving a high product yield (25%), is reported. Casein was used as a sustainable carbon source, and polyvinylpyrrolidone was used as a stabilizer for the nanodots. The size of the prepared amorphous CND corresponds to individual casein coils, which were only partially carbonized. They were obtained due to the disintegration of casein micelles and submicelles within the microwave-assisted solvothermal process. The resulting nanodots had bright photoluminescence, and their electronic structure and optical properties were investigated. A novel competitive model of their luminescence mechanism was introduced to explain a phenomenon beyond the standard models. The synthesized carbon nanodots were used as luminescent ink for anticounterfeit applications. A polymer matrix nanocomposite was prepared by dispersing the nanodots in a flexible and robust poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene) tri-block copolymer (SEBS) using the solution cast method. For the first time, the effect of CND on the luminescence and mechanical properties of the SEBS/CND self-supporting films was studied. The film was also studied as a phosphor for light-emitting diodes, with a unique experimental setup to avoid self-absorption, which results in low efficiency and eliminates the excess UV transmitted. Because of their high luminescence, photostability, and mechanical properties, these CND could be used as luminescent labels in the packaging and optoelectronics industries.

Abstract
Carbon dots (CDs) have two unique advantages: one is ease of synthesis at low price, the other is desirable physical and chemical properties, such as ultra-small size, abundant surface functional groups, nontoxic/low-toxicity, good biocompatibility, excellent antibacterial and antioxidant activities etc. These advantages provide opportunities for the development of new food packaging enhancers and food preservatives. This paper systematically reviews the studies of CDs used to strengthen the physical properties of food packaging, including strengthen mechanical strength, ultraviolet (UV) barrier properties and water barrier properties. It also reviews the researches of CDs used to fabricate active packaging with antioxidant and/or antibacterial properties and intelligent packaging with the capacity of sensing the freshness of food. In addition, it analyzes the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of CDs as preservatives, and discusses the effect of CDs applied as coating agents and nano-level food additives for extension the shelf life of food samples. It also provides a brief review on the security and the release behavior of CDs.

Abstract
Since their discovery in 2004, carbon dots have attracted strong interest in the scientific community due to their characteristic properties, particularly their luminescence and their ease of synthesis and derivatization. Carbon dots can be obtained from different carbon sources, including natural products, resulting in a so-called ’green synthesis’. In this work, we obtain carbon dots from tomato juice in order to obtain nanoparticles with the antioxidant capabilities of the natural antioxidants present in that fruit. The obtained material is characterized regarding nanoparticle size distribution, morphology, surface functional groups and optic properties. Antioxidant properties are also evaluated through the DPPH method and their cytotoxicity is checked against human dermal fibroblast and A549 cell-lines. The results indicate that carbon dots obtained from tomato have a higher antioxidant power than other already-published antioxidant carbon dots. The bandgap of the synthesized materials was also estimated and coherent with the literature values. Moreover, carbon dots obtained from tomato juice are barely toxic for healthy cells up to 72 h, while they induce a certain cytotoxicity in A549 lung carcinoma cells.

Abstract
Photoluminescent nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon nanodots (N,S-CNDs) were prepared via single-step hydrothermal carbonization using 2,4-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid (2,4-DABSA) as the sole precursor. The synthesized N,S-CNDs are easily dispersed in aqueous solution and have an average particle size of 5.0 ± 0.2 nm, showing a high quantum yield of 23.1% with excellent stability. The surface states of the N,S-CNDs were confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffractometry, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. These N,S-CNDs were applied for the rapid visual sensing detection of Ag+ ions, which can be identified by their photoluminescent color change under ultraviolet (UV) light illumination at 365 nm within 5 s. Furthermore, a linear correlation coefficient between P0/P and Ag+ ions was observed in the linear range of 0-1.2 μM with a detection limit of 7.88 nM. The proposed method was successfully used for the sensitive detection of Ag+ ions in real samples with satisfactory recoveries and relative standard deviation. The photoluminescence properties of N,S-CND and N,S-CNDs/Ag+ aqueous solutions were demonstrated by their invisible inks that can only be seen when irradiated with UV light. The RGB values of N,S-CND and N,S-CNDs/Ag+ aqueous solutions were measured using a color selector smartphone application. In addition, N,S-CND and N,S-CNDs/Ag+ aqueous solutions were further used for the multicolor imaging of HCT-116 cancer cells due to the low toxicity of N,S-CNDs.

Abstract
Carbon dots (CDs) were prepared and noted to exhibit potent scavenging activities against DPPH·, ·OH, and O2·- radicals. Addition of CDs to frying oil as a means to improve oxidative stability and minimize quality changes of fried meatballs during refrigerated storage was investigated in comparison with the use of tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) and carnosic acid (CA). Compared with the control sample, 0.05% CDs significantly reduced thiobarbituric acid reactive substances value, carbonyl and total volatile basic nitrogen contents of fried meatballs. Both lipid and protein oxidation inhibition capabilities of CDs were higher than those of 0.05% CA but lower than those of 0.02% TBHQ. Total sensory score of sample with CDs (7.1 ± 0.06) was significantly higher than those of the control (4.7 ± 0.03) and sample with TBHQ (6.4 ± 0.04). CDs could delay oxidation of fried meatballs during refrigerated storage and can well serve as an alternative antioxidant.

Abstract
Lipids are widely distributed in nature and are one of the most important components of natural foods, synthetic compounds, and emulsions. To date, there is a strong social demand in the industrial sector for the use of sustainable products with a minimal environmental impact. Depending on their origin and composition, lipids can be employed as a plausible alternative as biodegradable lubricants in order to reduce the use of conventional mineral oil lubricants and mitigate their environmental impact. This perspective provides an overview of the advantages and constrains of vegetal oils under different lubrication regimes and the tribochemical reactions that can take place. Also, the different factors and pathways that influence their oxidation, the key role of moisture, and the changes of physical properties under pressure and temperature are reviewed. Special emphasis is devoted to the oxidation instability of fatty acids and vegetal oils and the physical and chemical approaches to improve oxidative and thermal stability are described in detail.
