Propagation of Rectangular Multi-Gaussian Schell-Model Array Beams through Free Space and Non-Kolmogorov Turbulence

Beam intensity and spectral coherence of Hermite-cosine-Gaussian rectangular multi-Gaussian correlated Schell-model beam in oceanic turbulence

The beam spreading and evolution behavior of a partially coherent, Hermite-cosine-Gaussian (HcosG) rectangular multi-Gaussian correlated Schell-model beam propagating in oceanic turbulence is studied. Analytical expressions for the cross-spectral density function, as well as the root mean square (rms) beam width and the spectral degree of coherence, are derived based on the extended Huygens-Fresnel principle. The HcosG rectangular multi-Gaussian correlated Schell-model beam exhibits a multi-lobe pattern at short propagation distances. The dependencies of the number, size, shape, and centroid of the lobes on displacement parameters, source size, order of field distribution, and displacement are investigated. As the propagation distance increases, the spectral coherence decreases, and the differences between the spectral coherence curves gradually diminish. Additionally, for HcosG rectangular multi-Gaussian correlated Schell-model beams, better propagation performance was found in oceanic turbulence with larger mean square temperature dissipation rate, smaller turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate per unit mass of fluid, and larger relative strength of temperature and salinity fluctuation.

Radial phased-locked Laguerre-Gaussian correlated schell-model beam array

A new beam array called radial phased-locked Laguerre-Gaussian correlated Schell-model (LGCSM) beam array is presented, the beamlet of this beam array is partially coherent beam with Laguerre Gaussian-Schell model correlation. The propagation expression of a radial phased-locked LGCSM beam array in free space is derived. It is aimed to give the effect of beam parameters on evolutions of beam array composed by LGCSM beam. The radial phased-locked LGCSM beam array has unique properties on propagation, the intensity of such beam array will evolve from a beam array composed of Gauss beams into a beam array formed of LGCSM beams. Furthermore, the intensity evolutions of such beam array are modulated by coherence length and beam order of beamlets. The obtained results are important in areas such as light field shaping, and free space optical communication.

Investigation of the anisotropy and scaling of the phase structure function of a spatially coherent light beam propagating through convective air turbulence

We report on applications of moiré deflectometry in measurements of the anisotropy and scaling of the phase structure function (PSF), obtained after passing a laser beam through an indoor enclosure containing convective air turbulence. We combine the use of two telescopes, with a two-channel wavefront sensor based on moiré deflectometry, to attain high sensitivity and resolution to fluctuations in the wavefront phase, caused by turbulent fluctuations in the enclosure. The measurements of the wavefront PSF along two directions perpendicular to the direction of the light beam propagation at different heater temperatures show that the convective air turbulence is anisotropic turbulence, where the value of the anisotropy increases with increasing temperature gradient. Various models are fitted to the measured PSFs, and we find that the turbulent is also non-Kolmogorov, in which, for the separation distances of two points on the wavefront less than 10 cm, the von Kármán PSF is the best fit to the experimental data. For higher values of separations, the experimental data do not fit with existing models. By fitting the von Kármán PSF on the data, we estimate values of the refractive index structure constant, Cn2, as well as the outer scale of the turbulence. The value of the outer scale decreases with increasing temperature of the heater up to approximately 50°C, where it saturates, while the value of Cn2 monotonically increases. Over the complete range of heater temperatures, from 40°C to 160°C, the Rayleigh number, Ra, for the enclosed air flow varied from 5.80×10⁸<Ra<5.89×10⁹ so that all measurements were conducted in a state of developed convective turbulence.

Intensity and Coherence Characteristics of a Radial Phase-Locked Multi-Gaussian Schell-Model Vortex Beam Array in Atmospheric Turbulence

The theoretical descriptions for a radial phase-locked multi-Gaussian Schell-model vortex (RPLMGSMV) beam array is first given. The normalized intensity and coherence distributions of a RPLMGSMV beam array propagating in free space and atmospheric turbulence are illustrated and analyzed. The results show that a RPLMGSMV beam array with larger total number N or smaller coherence length σ can evolve into a beam with better flatness when the beam array translating into the flat-topped profile at longer distance z and the flatness of the flat-topped intensity distribution can be destroyed by the atmospheric turbulence at longer distance z. The coherence distribution of a RPLMGSMV beam array in atmospheric turbulence at the longer distance will have Gaussian distribution. The research results will be useful in free space optical communication using a RPLMGSMV beam array.
