Practical Risk Assessment of Ground Vibrations Resulting from Blasting, Using Gene Expression Programming and Monte Carlo Simulation Techniques

Blasting profile evaluation of sand-mud interbedded surrounding rock during the large-span tunnel construction

The sand-mud interbedded surrounding rock contains discontinuities, such as horizontal bedding, joints, weak planes and weak interlayers. Drilling and blasting construction in this kind of surrounding rock is very likely to cause very serious over-/under-excavation phenomenon and excessive damage to surrounding rock, and the contour flatness after smooth blasting of the tunnel is also difficult to be guaranteed, which increases subsequent construction procedures and reduces production efficiency. In order to effectively evaluate the smooth blasting effect of the sand-mud interbedded surrounding rock tunnel, taking a tunnel project in southwest China as the research background, the blasting numerical simulation of the sand-mud interbedded surrounding rock tunnel was carried out using the dynamic analysis program, and the corresponding blasting optimization scheme was obtained. Subsequently, based on fuzzy mathematical theory, the evaluation system of blasting effect of sand-mud interbedded tunnel was established by combining the evaluation criteria of tunnel smooth blasting quality. Immediately afterwards, the weights of each influencing factor index were determined, and the blasting shaping effect of the original blasting scheme and the optimized blasting scheme was evaluated. Finally, the results have shown that the optimized tunnel blasting profile effect was better than the original blasting scheme. The corresponding research results have certain guiding significance for similar tunnel blasting effect evaluation and blasting parameter design.

Intelligent Design of Construction Materials: A Comparative Study of AI Approaches for Predicting the Strength of Concrete with Blast Furnace Slag

Concrete production by replacing cement with green materials has been conducted in recent years considering the strategy of sustainable development. This study researched the topic of compressive strength regarding one type of green concrete containing blast furnace slag. Although some researchers have proposed using machine learning models to predict the compressive strength of concrete, few researchers have compared the prediction accuracy of different machine learning models on the compressive strength of concrete. Firstly, the hyperparameters of BP neural network (BPNN), support vector machine (SVM), decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), K-nearest neighbor algorithm (KNN), logistic regression (LR), and multiple linear regression (MLR) are tuned by the beetle antennae search algorithm (BAS). Then, the prediction effects of the above seven machine learning models on the compressive strength of concrete are evaluated and compared. The comparison results show that KNN has higher R values and lower RSME values both in the training set and test set; that is, KNN is the best model for predicting the compressive strength of concrete among the seven machine learning models mentioned above.

A Novel Neural Computing Model Applied to Estimate the Dynamic Modulus (DM) of Asphalt Mixtures by the Improved Beetle Antennae Search

To accurately estimate the dynamic properties of the asphalt mixtures to be used in the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG), a novel neural computing model using the improved beetle antennae search was developed. Asphalt mixtures were designed conventionally by eight types of aggregate gradations and two types of asphalt binders. The dynamic modulus (DM) tests were conducted under 3 temperatures and 3 loading frequencies to construct 144 datasets for the machine learning process. A novel neural network model was developed by using an improved beetle antennae search (BAS) algorithm to adjust the hyperparameters more efficiently. The predictive results of the proposed model were determined by R and RMSE and the importance score of the input parameters was assessed as well. The prediction performance showed that the improved BAS algorithm can effectively adjust the hyperparameters of the neural network calculation model, and built the asphalt mixture DM prediction model has higher reliability and effectiveness than the random hyperparameter selection. The mixture model can accurately evaluate and predict the DM of the asphalt mixture to be used in MEPDG. The dynamic shear modulus of the asphalt binder is the most important parameter that affects the DM of the asphalt mixtures because of its high correlation with the adhesive effect in the composition. The phase angle of the binder showed the highest influence on the DM of the asphalt mixtures in the remaining variables. The importance of these influences can provide a reference for the future design of asphalt mixtures.

Procedure Proposal for Minimising the Dynamic Error of Second-Order Sensors

This paper proposes the procedure for minimising the dynamic error in the time and frequency domains, based on the example of a second-order sensor. Our procedure includes three main steps: modelling of the sensors using the Monte Carlo (MC) method; determination of the maximum value of the dynamic error using the integral-square criterion (ISC); and optimisation of the parameters of the sensor model by minimising the ISC. The uncertainties associated with the modelling procedure and the MC method are also considered. The mathematical formulae necessary for implementation in a given programming language (MathCad, MATLAB, C, etc.) are presented in detail. The proposed procedure was implemented in the frequency domain, using MathCad 15, and applied to the example of the Althen 731-207 accelerometer. Validation of the proposed procedure was carried out using a digital signal processor of type TMS320C6713. The proposed procedure can increase the accuracy of the signal processing obtained at the output of sensors applied to a wide range of measurements.

Prediction of Peak Particle Velocity Caused by Blasting through the Combinations of Boosted-CHAID and SVM Models with Various Kernels

This research examines the feasibility of hybridizing boosted Chi-Squared Automatic Interaction Detection (CHAID) with different kernels of support vector machine (SVM) techniques for the prediction of the peak particle velocity (PPV) induced by quarry blasting. To achieve this objective, a boosting-CHAID technique was applied to a big experimental database comprising six input variables. The technique identified four input parameters (distance from blast-face, stemming length, powder factor, and maximum charge per delay) as the most significant parameters affecting the prediction accuracy and utilized them to propose the SVM models with various kernels. The kernel types used in this study include radial basis function, polynomial, sigmoid, and linear. Several criteria, including mean absolute error (MAE), correlation coefficient (R), and gains, were calculated to evaluate the developed models’ accuracy and applicability. In addition, a simple ranking system was used to evaluate the models’ performance systematically. The performance of the R and MAE index of the radial basis function kernel of SVM in training and testing phases, respectively, confirm the high capability of this SVM kernel in predicting PPV values. This study successfully demonstrates that a combination of boosting-CHAID and SVM models can identify and predict with a high level of accuracy the most effective parameters affecting PPV values.

A Novel Feature Selection Approach Based on Tree Models for Evaluating the Punching Shear Capacity of Steel Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Flat Slabs

When designing flat slabs made of steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC), it is very important to predict their punching shear capacity accurately. The use of machine learning seems to be a great way to improve the accuracy of empirical equations currently used in this field. Accordingly, this study utilized tree predictive models (i.e., random forest (RF), random tree (RT), and classification and regression trees (CART)) as well as a novel feature selection (FS) technique to introduce a new model capable of estimating the punching shear capacity of the SFRC flat slabs. Furthermore, to automatically create the structure of the predictive models, the current study employed a sequential algorithm of the FS model. In order to perform the training stage for the proposed models, a dataset consisting of 140 samples with six influential components (i.e., the depth of the slab, the effective depth of the slab, the length of the column, the compressive strength of the concrete, the reinforcement ratio, and the fiber volume) were collected from the relevant literature. Afterward, the sequential FS models were trained and verified using the above-mentioned database. To evaluate the accuracy of the proposed models for both testing and training datasets, various statistical indices, including the coefficient of determination (R²) and root mean square error (RMSE), were utilized. The results obtained from the experiments indicated that the FS-RT model outperformed FS-RF and FS-CART models in terms of prediction accuracy. The range of R² and RMSE values were obtained as 0.9476–0.9831 and 14.4965–24.9310, respectively; in this regard, the FS-RT hybrid technique demonstrated the best performance. It was concluded that the three hybrid techniques proposed in this paper, i.e., FS-RT, FS-RF, and FS-CART, could be applied to predicting SFRC flat slabs.

A Novel Risk Assessment and Analysis Method for Correlation in a Complex System Based on Multi-Dimensional Theory

With the rapid development of high integrations in large complex systems, such as aircraft, satellite, and railway systems, due to the increasingly complex coupling relationship between components within the system, local disturbances or faults may cause global effects on the system by fault propagation. Therefore, there are new challenges in safety analysis and risk assessment for complex systems. Aiming at analyzing and evaluating the inherent risks of the complex system with coupling correlation characteristics objectively, this paper proposes a novel risk assessment and analysis method for correlation in complex system based on multi-dimensional theory. Firstly, the formal description and coupling degree analysis method of the hierarchical structure of complex systems is established. Moreover, considering the three safety risk factors of fault propagation probability, potential severity, and fault propagation time, a multi-dimensional safety risk theory is proposed, in order to evaluate the risk of each element within the system effecting on the overall system. Furthermore, critical safety elements are identified based on Pareto rules, As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) principles, and safety risk entropy to support the preventive measures. Finally, an application of an avionics system is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Development of a Group Method of Data Handling Technique to Forecast Iron Ore Price

Iron is one of the most applicable metals in the world. The global price of iron ore is determined based on demand and supply. There are numerous parameters (e.g., price of steel, steel production, oil price, gold price, interest rate, inflation rate, iron production, and aluminum price) affecting the global iron ore price. Considering the high number of effective parameters and existence of complex relationship among them, artificial intelligence-based approaches can be employed to predict iron ore price. In this paper, a new intelligence system namely group method of data handling (GMDH) was developed and introduced to predict the price of iron ore. For comparison purposes, four other techniques i.e., autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), support vector regression (SVR), artificial neural network (ANN), and classification and regression tree (CART) were developed for prediction of monthly iron ore price. Then, using testing datasets, the developed models were validated and their performance capacities were compared. The results showed that performance prediction of the GMDH model is significantly better than other predictive models based on four performance indices i.e., root mean square error, variance account for (VAF), mean absolute error, and mean absolute percentage error. Results of VAF (97.89%, 90.81%, 80.95%, 55.02%, and 23.87% for GMDH, SVR, ANN, CART, and ARIMA models, respectively) revealed that the GMDH technique is able to predict iron ore price with higher degree of accuracy compared to the other techniques.

Seepage Analysis in Short Embankments Using Developing a Metaheuristic Method Based on Governing Equations

Seepage is one of the most challenging issues in some procedures such as design, construction, and operation of embankment or earth fill dams. The purpose of this research is to develop a new solution based on governing equations to solve the seepage problem in an effective way. Therefore, by implementing the equations in the programming environment, more than 24,000 models were designed to be applicable to different conditions. Input data included different parameters such as slopes in upstream and downstream, embankment width, soil permeability coefficient, height, and freeboard. With the use of this big data, a new process was developed to provide simple mathematical models for the seepage rate analysis. The study first used intelligent models to simulate the seepage behavior. Finally, the accuracy of the models was optimized using a new metaheuristic algorithm. This led to the ultimate flexibility of the final model presented as a new solution capable of evaluating different conditions. Finally, using the best model, new mathematical relationships were developed based on this methodology. This new solution can be used as a proper alternative to the governing equations of seepage rate estimation. Another advantage of the proposed model is its high flexibility that can be well applied to engineering design in this field, which was not possible using the initial equations.

Investigating the Applications of Machine Learning Techniques to Predict the Rock Brittleness Index

Despite the vast usage of machine learning techniques to solve engineering problems, a very limited number of studies on the rock brittleness index (BI) have used these techniques to analyze issues in this field. The present study developed five well-known machine learning techniques and compared their performance to predict the brittleness index of the rock samples. The comparison of the models’ performance was conducted through a ranking system. These techniques included Chi-square automatic interaction detector (CHAID), random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), K-nearest neighbors (KNN), and artificial neural network (ANN). This study used a dataset from a water transfer tunneling project in Malaysia. Results of simple rock index tests i.e., Schmidt hammer, p-wave velocity, point load, and density were considered as model inputs. The results of this study indicated that while the RF model had the best performance for training (ranking = 25), the ANN outperformed other models for testing (ranking = 22). However, the KNN model achieved the highest cumulative ranking, which was 37. The KNN model showed desirable stability for both training and testing. However, the results of validation stage indicated that RF model with coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.971 provides higher performance capacity for prediction of the rock BI compared to KNN model with R2 of 0.807 and ANN model with R2 of 0.860. The results of this study suggest a practical use of the machine learning models in solving problems related to rock mechanics specially rock brittleness index.

Evaluating Slope Deformation of Earth Dams Due to Earthquake Shaking Using MARS and GMDH Techniques

Assessing the behavior of earth dams under dynamic loads is one of the most significant problems with the design of such large structures. The purpose of this study is to provide new models for predicting dam dispersion in real earthquake conditions. In the first phase, 103 real cases of deformation in earth dams were collected and analyzed due to earthquakes that occurred over recent years. Using nonlinear and machine learning techniques, i.e., group method of data handling (GMDH) and multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), two models for prediction of the slope deformation in earth dams under the various types of earthquakes were applied and developed. The main parameters used in these simulation techniques were earthquake magnitude (Mw), fundamental period ratio (Td/Tp), yield acceleration ratio (ay/amax) as inputs and value of slope deformation (Dave) as output. Finally, in order to check the accuracy of the results of the new models, a comparison was made with the previous relations and models in seismic conditions for the slope deformation in earth dams. The results showed that the MARS model, which is able to provide a mathematical equation, has a better result than the GMDH model. These new models are recommended to be used for future analyses based on their flexible capabilities.

Effective Assessment of Blast-Induced Ground Vibration Using an Optimized Random Forest Model Based on a Harris Hawks Optimization Algorithm

Most mines choose the drilling and blasting method which has the characteristics of being a cheap and efficient method to fragment rock mass, but blast-induced ground vibration damages the surrounding rock mass and structure and is a drawback. To predict, analyze and control the blast-induced ground vibration, the random forest (RF) model, Harris hawks optimization (HHO) algorithm and Monte Carlo simulation approach were utilized. A database consisting of 137 datasets was collected at different locations around the Tonglvshan open-cast mine, China. Seven variables were selected and collected as the input variables, and peak particle velocity was chosen as the output variable. At first, an RF model and a hybrid model, namely a HHO-RF model, were developed, and the prediction results checked by 3 performance indices to show that the proposed HHO-RF model can provide higher prediction performance. Then blast-induced ground vibration was simulated by using the Monte Carlo simulation approach and the developed HHO-RF model. After analyzing, the mean peak particle velocity value was 0.98 cm/s, and the peak particle velocity value did not exceed 1.95 cm/s with a probability of 90%. The research results of this study provided a simple, accurate method and basis for predicting, evaluating blast-induced ground vibration and optimizing the blast design before blast operation.
