Recent Advances in THz Detection of Water

The frequency range of terahertz waves (THz waves) is between 0.1 and 10 THz and they have properties such as low energy, penetration, transients, and spectral fingerprints, which are especially sensitive to water. Terahertz, as a frontier technology, have great potential in interpreting the structure of water molecules and detecting biological water conditions, and the use of terahertz technology for water detection is currently frontier research, which is of great significance. Firstly, this paper introduces the theory of terahertz technology and summarizes the current terahertz systems used for water detection. Secondly, an overview of theoretical approaches, such as the relaxation model and effective medium theory related to water detection, the relationship between water molecular networks and terahertz spectra, and the research progress of the terahertz detection of water content and water distribution visualization, are elaborated. Finally, the challenge and outlook of applications related to the terahertz wave detection of water are discussed. The purpose of this paper is to explore the research domains on water and its related applications using terahertz technology, as well as provide a reference for innovative applications of terahertz technology in moisture detection.

Metallodrug-protein interaction probed by synchrotron terahertz and neutron scattering spectroscopy

This experimental work applied coherent synchrotron-radiation terahertz spectroscopy and inelastic neutron scattering to address two processes directly associated with the mode of action of metal-based anticancer agents that can severely undermine chemotherapeutic treatment: drug binding to human serum albumin, occurring during intravenous drug transport, and intracellular coordination to thiol-containing biomolecules (such as metallothioneins) associated with acquired drug resistance. Cisplatin and two dinuclear platinum (Pt)- and palladium (Pd)-polyamine agents developed by this research group, which have yielded promising results toward some types of human cancers, were investigated. Complementary synchrotron-radiation-terahertz and inelastic neutron scattering data revealed protein metalation, through S- and N-donor ligands from cysteine, methionine, and histidine residues. A clear impact of the Pt and Pd agents was evidenced, drug binding to albumin and metallothionein having been responsible for significant changes in the overall protein conformation, as well as for an increased flexibility and possible aggregation.

Terahertz spectroscopy combined with data dimensionality reduction algorithms for quantitative analysis of protein content in soybeans

Protein content in soybean is a key determinant of its nutritional and economic value. The paper investigated the feasibility of terahertz (THz) spectroscopy and dimensionality reduction algorithms for the determination of protein content in soybean. First of all, the THz sample spectrum was data processed by pre-processing or dimensionality reduction algorithms. Secondly, by calibration set, using partial least squares regression (PLSR), genetic algorithms-support vector regression (GA-SVR), grey wolf optimizer-support vector regression (GWO-SVR) and back propagation neural network (BPNN) were respectively used to model protein content determination. Afterwards, the model was validated by the prediction set. Ultimately, the BPNN model combined with linear discriminant analysis (LDA) for related coefficient of prediction set (Rp), root mean square error of prediction set (RMSEP), relative standard deviation (RSD), the time required for the operation was respectively 0.9677, 1.2467%, 3.3664%, and 53.51 s. The experimental results showed that the rapid and accurate quantitative determination of protein in soybean using THz spectroscopy is feasible after a suitable dimensionality reduction algorithm.

Continuous-Wave THz Imaging for Biomedical Samples

In the past few decades, the applications of terahertz (THz) spectroscopy and imaging technology have seen significant developments in the fields of biology, medical diagnosis, food safety, and nondestructive testing. Label-free diagnosis of malignant tumours has been obtained and also achieved significant development in THz biomedical imaging. This review mainly presents the research status and prospects of several common continuous-wave (CW) THz medical imaging systems and applications of THz medical imaging in biological tissues. Here, we first introduce the properties of THz waves and how these properties play a role in biomedical imaging. Then, we analyse both the advantages and disadvantages of the CW THz imaging methods and the progress of these methods in THz biomedical imaging in recent ten years. Finally, we summarise the obstacles in the way of the application of THz bio-imaging application technology in clinical detection, which need to be investigated and overcome in the future.
