Abstract
Lactones are cyclic esters of hydroxy carboxylic acids, present in several fruits and animals consumed by humans. There is evidence that some lactones modify insect behavior. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the repellent effect of four lactones (γ- and δ-nonalactone, and γ- and δ-dodecalactone) in first instar nymphs of the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (Linnaeus). To assess repellency, a nymph was placed on a circle of filter paper, half of which had been treated with lactone dissolved in acetone and the other half with acetone alone. The behavior of the nymph was recorded and the time the nymph spent in each half of the paper was quantified using Ethovision XT 10.1 software. Values of Distribution Coefficient (DC) were calculated: DC = (Tt - TA) / Tt, where Tt is the experimental time and TA is the time the nymph spent in the area treated with the repellent agent. DC can vary between 0 and 1. Values significantly higher than 0.5 indicate repellency. N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) was used as a positive control. DEET, δ- and γ-nonalactone caused repellency as from 77.9 µg/cm2, whereas γ- and δ-dodecalactone had a repellent effect starting at 779.0 µg/cm2. The values of DC for these concentrations were 0.89 (DEET), 0.86 (γ-nonalactone), 0.87 (δ-nonalactone), 0.83 (γ-dodecalactone), and 0.72 (δ-dodecalactone). To our knowledge, this is the first report of repellency produced by lactones in the German cockroach. This work allowed to identify two lactones that have a repellent effect similar to DEET.

Abstract
Three new C10 and C12 aliphatic δ-lactones (1-3), three new fatty acid methyl esters (4-6), and eight known compounds (7-14) were isolated from the marine Aureobasidium sp. LUO5. Their structures were established by detailed analyses of the NMR, HRESIMS, optical rotation, and ECD data. All isolates were tested for their inhibitory effects on nitric oxide production in LPS-induced BV-2 cells. Notably, compound 4 displayed the strongest inhibitory effect with the IC50 value of 120.3 nM.

Abstract
In this study, we explored the development of engineered inducible systems. Publicly available data from previous transposon sequencing assays were used to identify regulators of metabolism in Pseudomonas putida KT2440. For AraC family regulators (AFRs) represented in these data, we posited AFR/promoter/inducer groupings. Twelve promoters were characterized for a response to their proposed inducers in P. putida, and the resultant data were used to create and test nine two-plasmid sensor systems in Escherichia coli. Several of these were further developed into a palette of single-plasmid inducible systems. From these experiments, we observed an unreported inducer response from a previously characterized AFR, demonstrated that the addition of a P. putida transporter improved the sensor dynamics of an AFR in E. coli, and identified an uncharacterized AFR with a novel potential inducer specificity. Finally, targeted mutations in an AFR, informed by structural predictions, enabled the further diversification of these inducible plasmids.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to fabricate a new heterogeneous catalyst as zinc ferrite (ZF) supported on gamma-alumina (γ-Al2O3) for the conversion of cyclic ethers to the corresponding, more valuable lactones, using a solvent-free method and O2 as an oxidant. Hence, the ZF@γ-Al2O3 catalyst was prepared using a deposition-coprecipitation method, then characterized using TEM, SEM, EDS, TGA, FTIR, XRD, ICP, XPS, and BET surface area, and further applied for aerobic oxidation of cyclic ethers. The structural analysis indicated spherical, uniform ZF particles of 24 nm dispersed on the alumina support. Importantly, the incorporation of ZF into the support influenced its texture, i.e., the surface area and pore size were reduced while the pore diameter was increased. The product identification indicated lactone compound as the major product for saturated cyclic ether oxidation. For THF as a model reaction, it was found that the supported catalyst was 3.2 times more potent towards the oxidation of cyclic ethers than the unsupported one. Furthermore, the low reactivity of the six-membered ethers can be tackled by optimizing the oxidant pressure and the reaction time. In the case of unsaturated ethers, deep oxidation and polymerization reactions were competitive oxidations. Furthermore, it was found that the supported catalyst maintained good stability and catalytic activity, even after four cycles.

Abstract
γ- and δ-lactones are valuable flavor and fragrance compounds. Their synthesis depends on the availability of suitable hydroxy fatty acid precursors. Three short unspecific peroxygenases were identified that selectively hydroxylate the C4 and C5 positions of C8-C12 fatty acids to yield after lactonization the corresponding γ- and δ-lactones. A preference for C4 over C5 hydroxylation gave γ-lactones as the major products. Overoxidation of the hydroxy fatty acids was addressed via the reduction of the resulting oxo acids using an alcohol dehydrogenase in a bienzymatic cascade reaction.

Abstract
(1) Background: Increasing salinity, further potentiated by climate change and soil degradation, will jeopardize food security even more. Therefore, there is an urgent need for sustainable agricultural practices capable of maintaining high crop yields despite adverse conditions. Here, we tested if wheat, a salt-sensitive crop, could be a good reservoir for halotolerant bacteria with plant growth-promoting (PGP) capabilities. (2) Methods: We used two agricultural soils from Algeria, which differ in salinity but are both used to grow wheat. Soil halotolerant bacterial strains were isolated and screened for 12 PGP traits related to phytohormone production, improved nitrogen and phosphorus availability, nutrient cycling, and plant defence. The four 'most promising' halotolerant PGPB strains were tested hydroponically on wheat by measuring their effect on germination, survival, and biomass along a salinity gradient. (3) Results: Two halotolerant bacterial strains with PGP traits were isolated from the non-saline soil and were identified as Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas fluorescens, and another two halotolerant bacterial strains with PGP traits were isolated from the saline soil and identified as B. megaterium. When grown under 250 mM of NaCl, only the inoculated wheat seedlings survived. The halotolerant bacterial strain that displayed all 12 PGP traits and promoted seed germination and plant growth the most was one of the B. megaterium strains isolated from the saline soil. Although they both belonged to the B. megaterium clade and displayed a remarkable halotolerance, the two bacterial strains isolated from the saline soil differed in two PGP traits and had different effects on plant performance, which clearly shows that PGP potential is not phylogenetically determined. (4) Conclusions: Our data highlight that salt-sensitive plants and non-saline soils can be reservoirs for halotolerant microbes with the potential to become effective and sustainable strategies to improve plant tolerance to salinity. However, these strains need to be tested under field conditions and with more crops before being considered biofertilizer candidates.

Abstract
In this study, the effects of sequential fermentation of Lachancea thermotolerans/S. cerevisiae on the production of Plavac Mali wines were investigated in comparison with the commonly used inoculation of the commercial Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain and spontaneous fermentation. A total of 113 aroma compounds and 35 polyphenolic compounds were analyzed. Sequential inoculation resulted in a decrease in alcohol content and pH (up to 0.3% v/v and 0.12 units, respectively) and an increase in total acidity (0.6 g/L, expressed as tartaric acid). The wines produced by spontaneous fermentation exhibited the greatest diversity of volatile compounds and the highest concentration of C13 norisoprenoids, lactones, and other compounds. These wines exhibited maximum hydroxycinnamic acids, prodelphinidin monomer units, epigallocatechin, B1, B3, and B4 dimers, and total flavan-3-ols. Sequential inoculation decreased the content of the aromas and polyphenols in the wines. The practical significance of this procedure lies in the selective effect on aroma compounds, the decrease in green aromas, undetectable volatile phenols, and the decrease in bitter and astringent compounds such as gallic acid, flavan-3-ol monomers (catechin and epicatechin), and dimers (B1, B2, B3, and B4). This work demonstrates the potential of sequential and spontaneous fermentation to improve the aromatic characteristics and overall quality of Plavac Mali wines.

Abstract
As the environmental effects of plastics are of ever greater concern, the industry is driven towards more sustainable polymers. Besides sustainability, our fast-developing society imposes the need for highly versatile materials. Whereas aliphatic polyesters (PEs) are widely adopted and studied as next-generation biobased and (bio)degradable materials, their sulfur-containing analogs, polythioesters (PTEs), only recently gained attention. Nevertheless, the introduction of S atoms is known to often enhance thermal, mechanical, electrochemical, and optical properties, offering prospects for broad applicability. Furthermore, thanks to their thioester-based backbone, PTEs are inherently susceptible to degradation, giving them a high sustainability potential. The key route to PTEs is through ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of thio(no)lactones. This Review critically discusses the (potential) sustainability of the most relevant state-of-the-art in every step from sulfur source to end-of-life treatment options of PTEs, obtained through ROP of thio(no)lactones. The benefits and drawbacks of PTEs versus PEs are highlighted, including their industrial perspective.

Abstract
Female Sinantherina socialis are freshwater, sessile, colonial rotifers that possess two pairs of distinctive glands (warts) located below the corona. Previous studies demonstrated that colonies are unpalatable to many invertebrate and vertebrate predators; those authors suggested that the warts were a possible source of a chemical deterrent to predation. Here we explore wart ultrastructure and cytochemisty to determine whether the warts function as exocrine glands and if their contents display any allomone-like chemistry, respectively. Externally, the warts appear as elevated bulges without pores. Internally, the warts are specialized regions of the integumental syncytium and therefore acellular. The lipid stain Nile Red labels all four warts. Two lipid membrane probes (sphingomyelin and phosphatidylinositol) also bind the warts and may be staining internal secretion vesicle membranes. In fact, wart ultrastructure is defined by hundreds of membrane-bound secretion vesicles packed tightly together. The vesicles are mostly electron-lucent and crowded into a well-defined cytoplasmic space. The cytoplasm also contains abundant ribosomes, rough endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, and Golgi, but nuclei are generally positioned peripheral to the packed vesicles. Absence of muscles around the warts or any signs of direct innervation suggests expulsion of gland contents is forced by general body contraction. A single specimen with 'empty' warts implies that secretions are released en masse from all glands simultaneously. The identity of the chemical secretion remains to be determined, but the lack of osmium and uranyl acetate staining suggests a low abundance or absence of phenols, unsaturated lipids, or NH2 and -COOH groups. This absence, combined with the positive Nile Red staining, is interpreted as evidence that vesicles contain saturated fatty acids such as lactones that are unpalatable to predators.

Abstract
The non-conventional yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus is widely used for several biotechnological applications, mainly due to its thermotolerance, high growth rate, and ability to metabolise a wide range of sugars. These cell traits are strategic for lignocellulosic biomass valorisation and strain diversity prompts the development of robust chassis, either with improved tolerance to lignocellulosic inhibitors or ethanol. This review summarises bioethanol and value-added chemicals production by K. marxianus from different lignocellulosic biomasses. Moreover, metabolic engineering and process optimization strategies developed to expand K. marxianus potential are also compiled, as well as studies reporting cell mechanisms to cope with lignocellulosic-derived inhibitors. The main lignocellulosic-based products are bioethanol, representing 71% of the reports, and xylitol, representing 17% of the reports. K. marxianus also proved to be a good chassis for lactic acid and volatile compounds production from lignocellulosic biomass, although the literature on this matter is still scarce. The increasing advances in genome editing tools and process optimization strategies will widen the K. marxianus-based portfolio products.

Abstract
Two new lactones, named Ardisicreolides A–B (1–2), together with four known flavonoids, Quercetin (3), Myricetrin (4), Quercitrin (5), Tamarixetin 3-O-rhamnoside (6), were isolated from the ethyl acetate portion of 70% ethanol extracts of dried leaves from Ardisia crenata Sims. These compounds were identified from Ardisia crenata Sims for the first time. The structures of 1–6 were elucidated according to 1D and 2D-NMR methods and together with the published literature. All of the isolated compounds were evaluated for in vitro anti-microbial effect against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeuroginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, Proteus vulgaris, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis. In addition, compounds 1–2 were assessed for anti-inflammatory activity by acting on LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophage cells in vitro. The results showed that only compound 2 exhibited moderate antibacterial activity on Bacillus subtilis. Moreover, compounds 1 and 2 were found to significantly inhibit the production of nitric oxide (NO) and reduce the release of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-4 (IL-4), and interleukin-10 (IL-10) in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. The present data suggest that lactones from the leaves of A. crenata Sims might be used as a potential source of natural anti-inflammatory agents.

Abstract
The enantiomeric pure and natural (+)-Lactones (C ≤ 14) with aromas obtained from fruits and milk are considered flavoring compounds. The flavoring value is related to the lactones' ring size and chain length, which blend in varying concentrations to produce different stone-fruit flavors. The nature-identical and enantiomeric pure (+)-lactones are only produced through whole-cell biotransformation of yeast. The industrially important γ-decalactone and δ-decalactone are produced by a four-step aerobic-oxidation of ricinoleic acid (RA) following the lactonization mechanism. Recently, metabolic engineering strategies have opened up new possibilities for increasing productivity. Another strategy for increasing yield is to immobilize the RA and remove lactones from the broth regularly. Besides flavor impact, γ-, δ-, ε-, ω-lactones of the carbon chain (C8-C12), the macro-lactones and their derivatives are vital in pharmaceuticals and healthcare. These analogues are isolated from natural sources or commercially produced via biotransformation and chemical synthesis processes for medicinal use or as active pharmaceutical ingredients. The various approaches to biotransformation have been discussed in this review to generate more prospects from a commercial point of view. Finally, this work will be regarded as a magical brick capable of containing both traditional and genetic engineering technology while contributing to a wide range of commercial applications.

Abstract
AbstractParallel application of an aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA) to the volatiles isolated from a sample of fermented cocoa with an atypically pronounced coconut note and to the volatiles isolated from a reference cocoa sample revealed coconut-like smelling compounds δ-octalactone, δ-2-octenolactone, γ-nonalactone, γ-decalactone, δ-decalactone, and δ-2-decenolactone as potential causative odorants. Quantitation of these six compounds and calculation of odour activity values as ratios of the concentrations to the odour threshold values suggested δ-2-decenolactone as the crucial compound. Chiral analysis showed the presence of pure (R)-δ-2-decenolactone, commonly referred to as massoia lactone. Its key role for the coconut note was finally demonstrated in a spiking experiment: the addition of (R)-δ-2-decenolactone to the reference cocoa in an amount corresponding to the concentration difference between the two samples was able to provoke a coconut note in an intensity comparable to the one in the atypically smelling cocoa. To avoid an undesired coconut note caused by (R)-δ-2-decenolactone in the final products, the chocolate industry may consider its odour threshold value, that is 100 µg/kg, as a potential limit for the acceptance of fermented cocoa in the incoming goods inspection.
