Medical image identification methods: A review

The identification of medical images is an essential task in computer-aided diagnosis, medical image retrieval and mining. Medical image data mainly include electronic health record data and gene information data, etc. Although intelligent imaging provided a good scheme for medical image analysis over traditional methods that rely on the handcrafted features, it remains challenging due to the diversity of imaging modalities and clinical pathologies. Many medical image identification methods provide a good scheme for medical image analysis. The concepts pertinent of methods, such as the machine learning, deep learning, convolutional neural networks, transfer learning, and other image processing technologies for medical image are analyzed and summarized in this paper. We reviewed these recent studies to provide a comprehensive overview of applying these methods in various medical image analysis tasks, such as object detection, image classification, image registration, segmentation, and other tasks. Especially, we emphasized the latest progress and contributions of different methods in medical image analysis, which are summarized base on different application scenarios, including classification, segmentation, detection, and image registration. In addition, the applications of different methods are summarized in different application area, such as pulmonary, brain, digital pathology, brain, skin, lung, renal, breast, neuromyelitis, vertebrae, and musculoskeletal, etc. Critical discussion of open challenges and directions for future research are finally summarized. Especially, excellent algorithms in computer vision, natural language processing, and unmanned driving will be applied to medical image recognition in the future.

Real-time pneumonia prediction using pipelined spark and high-performance computing

Background

Pneumonia is a respiratory disease caused by bacteria; it affects many people, particularly in impoverished countries where pollution, unclean living standards, overpopulation, and insufficient medical infrastructures are prevalent. To guarantee curative therapy and boost survival chances, it is vital to detect pneumonia soon enough. Imaging using chest X-rays is the most common way of detecting pneumonia. However, analyzing chest X-rays is a complex process vulnerable to subjective variation. Moreover, the data available is growing exponentially, and it will take hours and days to train the model to predict pneumonia. Timely prediction is significant to guarantee a better cure and treatment. Existing work provided by different authors needs more precision, and the computation time for predicting pneumonia is also much longer. Therefore, there is a requirement for early forecasting. Using X-ray picture samples, the system must have a continuous and unsupervised learning system for early diagnosis.

Methods

In this article, the training time of the model is accelerated using the distributed data-parallel approach and the computational power of high-performance computing devices. This research aims to diagnose pneumonia using X-ray pictures with more precision, greater speed, and fewer processing resources. Distributed deep learning techniques are gaining popularity owing to the rising need for computational resources for deep learning models with several parameters. In contrast to conventional training methods, data-parallel training enables several compute nodes to train massive deep-learning models to improve training efficiency concurrently. Deploying the model in Spark solves the scalability and acceleration. Spark's distributed processing capability reads data from multiple nodes, and the results demonstrate that training time can be drastically reduced by utilizing these techniques, which is a significant necessity when dealing with large datasets.

Results

The proposed model makes the prediction 1.5 times faster than the traditional CNN model used for pneumonia prediction. The model also achieved an accuracy of 98.72%. The speed-up varying from 1.2 to 1.5 was obtained in the synchronous and asynchronous parallel model. The speed-up is reduced in the parallel asynchronous model due to the presence of straggler nodes.

Number of Convolution Layers and Convolution Kernel Determination and Validation for Multilayer Convolutional Neural Network: Case Study in Breast Lesion Screening of Mammographic Images

Mammography is a low-dose X-ray imaging technique that can detect breast tumors, cysts, and calcifications, which can aid in detecting potential breast cancer in the early stage and reduce the mortality rate. This study employed a multilayer convolutional neural network (MCNN) to screen breast lesions with mammographic images. Within the region of interest, a specific bounding box is used to extract feature maps before automatic image segmentation and feature classification are conducted. These include three classes, namely, normal, benign tumor, and malignant tumor. Multiconvolution processes with kernel convolution operations have noise removal and sharpening effects that are better than other image processing methods, which can strengthen the features of the desired object and contour and increase the classifier’s classification accuracy. However, excessive convolution layers and kernel convolution operations will increase the computational complexity, computational time, and training time for training the classifier. Thus, this study aimed to determine a suitable number of convolution layers and kernels to achieve a classifier with high learning performance and classification accuracy, with a case study in the breast lesion screening of mammographic images. The Mammographic Image Analysis Society Digital Mammogram Database (United Kingdom National Breast Screening Program) was used for experimental tests to determine the number of convolution layers and kernels. The optimal classifier’s performance is evaluated using accuracy (%), precision (%), recall (%), and F1 score to test and validate the most suitable MCNN model architecture.

Breast Lesions Screening of Mammographic Images with 2D Spatial and 1D Convolutional Neural Network-Based Classifier

Mammography is a first-line imaging examination that employs low-dose X-rays to rapidly screen breast tumors, cysts, and calcifications. This study proposes a two-dimensional (2D) spatial and one-dimensional (1D) convolutional neural network (CNN) to early detect possible breast lesions (tumors) to reduce patients’ mortality rates and to develop a classifier for use in mammographic images on regions of interest where breast lesions (tumors) may likely occur. The 2D spatial fractional-order convolutional processes are used to strengthen and sharpen the lesions’ features, denoise, and improve the feature extraction processes. Then, an automatic extraction task is performed using a specific bounding box to sequentially pick out feature patterns from each mammographic image. The multi-round 1D kernel convolutional processes can also strengthen and denoise 1D feature signals and assist in the identification of the differentiation levels of normality and abnormality signals. In the classification layer, a gray relational analysis-based classifier is used to screen the possible lesions, including normal (Nor), benign (B), and malignant (M) classes. The classifier development for clinical applications can reduce classifier’s training time, computational complexity level, computational time, and achieve a more accurate rate for meeting clinical/medical purpose. Mammographic images were selected from the mammographic image analysis society image database for experimental tests on breast lesions screening and K-fold cross-validations were performed. The experimental results showed promising performance in quantifying the classifier’s outcome for medical purpose evaluation in terms of recall (%), precision (%), accuracy (%), and F1 score.

Pneumonia Detection on Chest X-ray Images Using Ensemble of Deep Convolutional Neural Networks

Pneumonia is a life-threatening lung infection resulting from several different viral infections. Identifying and treating pneumonia on chest X-ray images can be difficult due to its similarity to other pulmonary diseases. Thus, the existing methods for predicting pneumonia cannot attain substantial levels of accuracy. This paper presents a computer-aided classification of pneumonia, coined Ensemble Learning (EL), to simplify the diagnosis process on chest X-ray images. Our proposal is based on Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models , which are pretrained CNN models that have been recently employed to enhance the performance of many medical tasks instead of training CNN models from scratch. We propose to use three well-known CNNs (DenseNet169, MobileNetV2, and Vision Transformer) pretrained using the ImageNet database.
