Low Threshold Plasmonic Nanolaser Based on Graphene

Tuning nanowire lasers via hybridization with two-dimensional materials

Mixed-dimensional hybrid structures have recently gained increasing attention as promising building blocks for novel electronic and optoelectronic devices. In this context, hybridization of semiconductor nanowires with two-dimensional materials could offer new ways to control and modulate lasing at the nanoscale. In this work, we deterministically fabricate hybrid mixed-dimensional heterostructures composed of ZnO nanowires and MoS₂ monolayers with micrometer control over their relative position. First, we show that our deterministic fabrication method does not degrade the optical properties of the ZnO nanowires. Second, we demonstrate that the lasing wavelength of ZnO nanowires can be tuned by several nanometers by hybridization with CVD-grown MoS₂ monolayers. We assign this spectral shift of the lasing modes to an efficient carrier transfer at the heterointerface and the subsequent increase of the optical band gap in ZnO (Moss-Burstein effect).

Principle and Applications of Multimode Strong Coupling Based on Surface Plasmons

In the past decade, strong coupling between light and matter has transitioned from a theoretical idea to an experimental reality. This represents a new field of quantum light-matter interaction, which makes the coupling strength comparable to the transition frequencies in the system. In addition, the achievement of multimode strong coupling has led to such applications as quantum information processing, lasers, and quantum sensors. This paper introduces the theoretical principle of multimode strong coupling based on surface plasmons and reviews the research related to the multimode interactions between light and matter. Perspectives on the future development of plasmonic multimode coupling are also discussed.

LiNbO3 waveguide with embedded Ag nanowire and 3L MoS2 for strong light confinement and ultra-long propagation length in the visible spectral range

A vertical slot LiNbO₃ waveguide with an Ag nanowire and 3L MoS₂ embedded in the low-refractive index slot region is proposed for the purpose of improving light confinement. We find that the proposed waveguide has a novel dielectric based plasmonic mode, where local light field is enhanced by the Ag nanowire. The mode exhibits an extremely large figure of merit (FoM) of 6.5×10⁶, one order of magnitude larger than that the largest FoM of any plasmonic waveguide reported in the literature to date. The waveguide also has an extremely long propagation length of 84 cm in the visible wavelength at 680 nm. Furthermore, the waveguide has a low sub-micro bending loss and can be directly connected to all-dielectric waveguides with an extremely low coupling loss. The proposed vertical slot LiNbO₃ waveguide is a promising candidate for the realization of ultrahigh integration density tunable circuits in the visible spectral range.

Principle and Applications of the Coupling of Surface Plasmons and Excitons

Surface plasmons have been attracting increasing attention and have been studied extensively in recent decades because of their half-light and half-material polarized properties. On the one hand, the tightly confined surface plasmonic mode may reduce the size of integrated optical devices beyond the diffraction limit; on the other hand, it provides an approach toward enhancement of the interactions between light and matter. In recent experiments, researchers have realized promising applications for surface plasmons in quantum information processing, ultra-low-power lasers, and micro-nano processing devices by using plasmonic structures, which have demonstrated their superiority over traditional optics structures. In this paper, we introduce the theoretical principle of surface plasmons and review the research work related to the interactions between plasmons and excitons. Some perspectives with regard to the future development of plasmonic coupling are also outlined.

Exfoliation and stabilization mechanism of graphene in carbon dioxide expanded organic solvents: molecular dynamics simulations

CO₂ expanded organic solvents possess significant advantages in liquid-phase exfoliation to obtain monolayer/few-layer graphene from graphite. Further insights into the mechanism of graphene exfoliation in such solvents are essential to explore liquid-phase dispersion of graphene as a more potent alternative to chemical vapor deposition. In this study, dynamic processes of exfoliation and stabilization of graphene in CO₂-N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), CO₂-N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP), CO₂-dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and CO₂-ethanol (EtOH) were investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. The origin of the effect of each solvent on graphene exfoliation was analyzed quantitatively through potential mean force simulations. It has been found that the organic solvent in a CO₂ expanded solvent should be chosen with proper surface tension, and there exist two different graphene exfoliation processes in the effective solvents, which can be described as "burger dissociation" and "extrusion-taking away" processes, respectively. In the former process, a characteristic "super-burger-like" conformation with a semi-exfoliated structure was formed, which was the deciding factor to obtain high ratio of monolayer/few-layer graphene in dispersion product. A theoretical explanation has also been provided at the molecular level to the earlier experimental phenomena. A predicted simulation of the CO₂-3,3'-iminobis(N,N-dimethylpropylamine) (DMPA) system is also calculated. This investigation helps to avoid incompatible CO₂ expanded organic solvents employed in the experimental studies and provides theoretical clues to understand the mechanism of exfoliation and stabilization of graphene in such solvents.

Synthesis, Structure and Photoluminescence Properties of 2D Organic–Inorganic Hybrid Perovskites

Two-dimensional (2D) layered hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites have potential applications in solar cells, electroluminescent devices and radiation detection because of their unique optoelectronic properties. In this paper, four 2D layered hybrid organic–inorganic halide perovskites of (C6H5CH2NH3)2PbCl4, (C6H5CH2NH3)2PbBr4, (C6H5CH2NH3)2PbI4 and (C4H9NH3)2PbBr4 were synthesized by solvent evaporation. Their crystal structure and surface morphology were studied. The effects of different halogens and organic amines on perovskites’ absorption spectra were investigated, and the photoluminescence (PL) properties were studied by femtosecond ultrafast spectroscopy. The experimental results show that the four perovskites are well crystallized and oriented. With the increase of halogen atom number (Cl, Br, I) in turn, the UV-Vis absorption spectra peaks of perovskites redshift due to the increasing of the layer spacing, but organic amines have little effect on the spectra of perovskites. The PL intensity increases with increasing laser power, but the lifetime decreases with increasing laser power, which is mainly due to the non-geminate recombination. This research is of great significance for realizing the spectral regulation of organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites and promoting their application in nano-photonics and optoelectronic devices.

Surface Plasmon Nanolaser: Principle, Structure, Characteristics and Applications

Photonic devices are becoming more and more miniaturized and highly integrated with the advancement of micro-nano technology and the rapid development of integrated optics. Traditional semiconductor lasers have diffraction limit due to the feedback from the optical system, and their cavity length is more than half of the emission wavelength, so it is difficult to achieve miniaturization. Nanolasers based on surface plasmons can break through the diffraction limit and achieve deep sub-wavelength or even nano-scale laser emission. The improvement of modern nanomaterial preparation processes and the gradual maturity of micro-nano machining technology have also provided technical conditions for the development of sub-wavelength and nano-scale lasers. This paper describes the basic principles of surface plasmons and nano-resonators. The structure and characteristics of several kinds of plasmonic nanolasers are discussed. Finally, the paper looks forward to the application and development trend of nanolasers.

Preparation and Two-Photon Photoluminescence Properties of Organic Inorganic Hybrid Perovskites (C6H5CH2NH3)2PbBr4 and (C6H5CH2NH3)2PbI4

Organic inorganic hybrid perovskites have potential applications in solar cells, electroluminescent devices and radiation detection because of their unique optoelectronic properties. In this paper, the perovskites (C6H5CH2NH3)2PbBr4 and (C6H5CH2NH3)2PbI4 were synthesized by solvent evaporation. The crystal structure, morphology, absorption spectrum, laser power dependence of the photoluminescence (PL) intensity and lifetime were studied. The results showed that the perovskites (C6H5CH2NH3)2PbBr4 and (C6H5CH2NH3)2PbI4 display a layered stacking structure of organic and inorganic components. The absorption peaks are located at 392 nm (3.16 eV) and 516 nm (2.40 eV), respectively. It was observed that the PL intensity and photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) increases with increasing laser power, and that the PL lifetime decreases with increasing laser power, which is mainly due to the non-geminate recombination.
