Enhancement of the Oil Absorption Capacity of Poly(Lactic Acid) Nano Porous Fibrous Membranes Derived via a Facile Electrospinning Method

Emerging nanotechnology backed formulations for the management of atopic dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is a prevalent chronic skin inflammation affecting 2.1 to 4.1% of adults globally. The complexity of its pathogenesis and the relapsing nature make it challenging to treat. Current treatments follow European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology guidelines, but advanced cases with recurring lesions lack effective therapies. To address this gap, researchers are exploring nanotechnology for targeted drug delivery. Nanoparticles offer benefits such as improved drug retention, stability, controlled release and targeted delivery through the disrupted epidermal barrier. This integrated review evaluates the current state of AD treatment and highlights the potential of novel nano-formulations as a promising approach to address the disease.

Electrospun Biodegradable Poly(L-lactic acid) Nanofiber Membranes as Highly Porous Oil Sorbent Nanomaterials

Crude oil spills seriously harm the ocean environment and endanger the health of various animals and plants. In the present study, a totally biodegradable polymer, poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), was employed to fabricate highly porous oil absorbent nanofibrous materials by using a combination of electrospinning technique and subsequent acetone treatment. We systematically investigated how the electrospinning parameters affected formation of the porous structure of PLLA nanofibers and demonstrated that PLLA nanofibers with decreased and uniform diameter and improved porosity could be rapidly prepared by adjusting solution parameters and spinning parameters. We also demonstrated that the acetone treatment could obviously enhance the pore diameter and specific surface area of as-optimized electrospun PLLA nanofibers. The acetone treatment could also improve the hydrophobic property of as-treated PLLA nanofiber membranes. All these led to a significant increase in oil absorption performance. Through our research, it was found that the oil absorption of PLLA nanofiber membrane increased by more than double after being treated with acetone and the oil retention rate was also improved slightly.

Stretchable skin hydrating PVB patches with controlled pores' size and shape for deliberate evening primrose oil spreading, transport and release

With the increasing number of skin problems such as atopic dermatitis and the number of affected people, scientists are looking for alternative treatments to standard ointment or cream applications. Electrospun membranes are known for their high porosity and surface to volume area, which leads to a great loading capacity and their applications as skin patches. Polymer fibers are widely used for biomedical applications such as drug delivery systems or regenerative medicine. Importantly, fibrous meshes are used as oil reservoirs due to their excellent absorption properties. In our study, nano- and microfibers of poly (vinyl butyral-co-vinyl alcohol-co-vinyl acetate) (PVB) were electrospun. The biocompatibility of PVB fibers was confirmed with the keratinocytes culture studies, including cells' proliferation and replication tests. To verify the usability and stretchability of electrospun membranes, they were tested in two forms as-spun and elongated after uniaxially stretched. We examine oil transport through the patches for as-spun fibers and compare it with the numerical simulation of oil flow in the 3D reconstruction of nano- and microfiber networks. Evening primrose oil spreading and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) tests were performed too. Finally, for skin hydration tests, manufactured materials loaded with evening primrose oil were applied to the forearm of volunteers for 6 h, showing increased skin moisture after using patches. This study clearly demonstrates that pore size and shape, together with fiber diameter, influence oil transport in the electrospun patches allowing to understand the key driving process of electrospun PVB patches for skin hydration applications. The oil release improves skin moisture and can be designed regarding the needs, by manufacturing different fibers' sizes and arrangements. The fibrous based patches loaded with oils are easy to handle and could remain on the altered skin for a long time and deliver the oil, therefore they are an ideal material for overnight bandages for skin treatment.

3D Printed and Conventional Membranes—A Review

Polymer membranes are central to the proper operation of several processes used in a wide range of applications. The production of these membranes relies on processes such as phase inversion, stretching, track etching, sintering, or electrospinning. A novel and competitive strategy in membrane production is the use of additive manufacturing that enables the easier manufacture of tailored membranes. To achieve the future development of better membranes, it is necessary to compare this novel production process to that of more conventional techniques, and clarify the advantages and disadvantages. This review article compares a conventional method of manufacturing polymer membranes to additive manufacturing. A review of 3D printed membranes is also done to give researchers a reference guide. Membranes from these two approaches were compared in terms of cost, materials, structures, properties, performance. and environmental impact. Results show that very few membrane materials are used as 3D-printed membranes. Such membranes showed acceptable performance, better structures, and less environmental impact compared with those of conventional membranes.

Sorbent-based devices for the removal of spilled oil from water: a review

Always, oil spills do cause serious and dire consequences for the environment, nature, and society that it consumes much time and socio-economic resources to overcome such consequences. Oil spills, hence, posed a big challenge in searching the advanced technologies and devices to recover spilled oil rapidly and efficiently. Indeed, sorbents have been found to play an extremely critical role in the spilled-oil remediation processes. Recently, a large number of various advanced sorbents and sorbent-based oil-collecting devices/technologies have been developed to enhance the oil-recovery capacity. Therefore, it is necessary to have a comprehensive assessment of the application of sorbent-based oil-collecting devices/technologies in recovering spilled oil. Due to this reason, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the advanced technologies of the combination of sorbents and oil-collecting devices in the oil cleanup strategies. Two main oil-collecting devices such as booms and skimmers that could conjunct with sorbents were critically evaluated on the basis of the applicability and technological features, indicating that the capacity of oil spill recovery could achieve 90%. Moreover, oil-storage and oil-collecting devices were also completely mentioned. Last but not least, technical directions, concerns over the application of sorbents in oil recovery, and existing challenges relating to storage, transport, and disposal of used sorbents were discussed in detail. In the future, the automatic process of spilled oil recovery with the conjunction between advanced devices and environmentally friendly high-efficiency sorbents should be further investigated to minimize the environmental impacts, reduce the cost, as well as maximize the collected oil spill.

Moisturizing effect of skin patches with hydrophobic and hydrophilic electrospun fibers for atopic dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis (eczema), one of the most common disease and also most difficult to treat, is seeking for novel development not only in medicine but also in bioengineering. Moisturization is the key in eczema treatment as dry skin triggers inflammation that damages the skin barrier. Thus, here we combine electrospun hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) and hydrophilic nylon 6 (PA6) with oils to create patches helping to moisturize atopic skin. The fibrous membranes manufactured using electrospinning: PS, PA6, composite PS - PA6 and sandwich system combining them were characterized by water vapor transmission rates (WVTR) and fluid uptake ability (FUA). To create the most effective moisturizing patches we use borage, black cumin seed and evening primrose oil and tested their spreading. We show a great potential of our designed patches, the oil release tests on a skin and their moisturizing effect were verified. Our results distinctly reveal that both fiber sizes and hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of polymer influence oil spreading, release from membranes and WVTR measurements. Importantly, the direct skin test indicates the evident increase of hydration for both dry and normal skin after using the patches. The electrospun patches based on the hydrophobic and hydrophilic polymers have outstanding properties to be used as oil carriers for atopic dermatitis treatment.

Targeting Delivery System for Lactobacillus Plantarum Based on Functionalized Electrospun Nanofibers

With the increased interest in information on gut microbes, people are realizing the benefits of probiotics to health, and new technologies to improve the viability of probiotics are still explored. However, most probiotics have poor resistance to adverse environments. In order to improve the viability of lactic acid bacteria, polylactic acid (PLA) nanofibers were prepared by coaxial electrospinning. The electrospinning voltage was 16 kV, and the distance between spinneret and collector was 15 cm. The feed rates of the shell and core solutions were 1.0 and 0.25 mL/h, respectively. The lactic acid bacteria were encapsulated in the coaxial electrospun nanofibers with PLA and fructooligosaccharides (FOS) as the shell materials. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and laser scanning confocal microscopy showed that lactic acid bacteria were encapsulated in the coaxial electrospun nanofibers successfully. The water contact angle test indicated that coaxial electrospun nanofiber films had good hydrophobicity. An in vitro simulated digestion test exhibited that the survival rate of lactic acid bacteria encapsulated in coaxial electrospun nanofiber films was more than 72%. This study proved that the viability of probiotics can be improved through encapsulation within coaxial electrospun PLA nanofibers and provided a novel approach for encapsulating bioactive substances.

Novel approach towards the synthesis of highly efficient flame retardant electrode and oil/organic solvent absorber

We have developed a facile one pot process to synthesize an ultra-light functionalized spongy graphene (FSG). This is the first approach to use carbon based flame retardant spongy material as an electrode to build completely flame retardant supercapacitor (FRS) also as an oil/organic solvent absorber. The fully FRS concept has created by the compilation of as-prepared FSG with flame retardant separator and electrolyte. As-prepared FSG contained high amount of phosphorus and nitrogen functional groups, which makes it potent flame retardant electrochemical material, to use it as an efficient FR electrode. Flame test of FSG revealed that it doesn't catch fire for ∼1500 s. Also, FSG was able to sustain flame retardancy at a temperature as high as 1500 °C for continuous exposure of ∼300 s. FSG used as an electrode for symmetric capacitor possessing maximum specific capacitance of 494.3 F g^-1 at a current density 1 A g^-1. Corresponding high energy density and power density values are 55.6 Wh kg^-1 and 1799 W kg^-1. It shows cycling stability of 86.1% after 5000 cycles at current density of 10 A g^-1. The electrochemical property of FSG was also confirmed using three electrode system. Flame retardant FSG material was also used for the absorption and recovery of oil and organic solvents. FSG has high oil and organic solvent sorption capacity in the range of 40-70 g/g, also can be reused for minimum 10 cycles. Such approach has great significance for multifunctional graphene based nanocomposites will open the new window for large-scale applications.

Electrospinning-Derived PLA/Shellac/PLA Sandwich—Structural Membrane Sensor for Detection of Alcoholic Vapors with a Low Molecular Weight

The development of gas sensors for detecting alcoholic vapors with a low molecular weight is essential for environmental protection, industrial process control, and the monitoring of the living atmosphere in daily life to avoid health problems in human beings. Here, poly (lactic acid) (PLA)/shellac/PLA sandwich-structural membranes were fabricated via an electrospinning approach and the interaction with alcoholic vapors with a low molecular weight was investigated. It was found that the PLA/shellac/PLA sandwich-structural membrane exhibited fast response to the alcoholic vapors with low molecular weight, especially for methanol vapor. After being treated with alcohol vapor with a low molecular weight, the PLA/shellac/PLA sandwich-structural membrane could change its transmission in a short time (~5 s) and with a concentration of 10 wt% of methanol (ethanol) in water. In the meantime, the PLA/shellac/PLA sandwich-structural membrane can hopefully be potentially used again after evaporating the alcoholic vapor at an elevated temperature.

The Comprehensive Approach to Preparation and Investigation of the Eu3+ Doped Hydroxyapatite/poly(L-lactide) Nanocomposites: Promising Materials for Theranostics Application

In response to the need for new materials for theranostics application, the structural and spectroscopic properties of composites designed for medical applications, received in the melt mixing process, were evaluated. A composite based on medical grade poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) and calcium hydroxyapatite (HAp) doped with Eu³⁺ ions was obtained by using a twin screw extruder. Pure calcium Hap, as well as the one doped with Eu³⁺ ions, was prepared using the precipitation method and then used as a filler. XRPD (X-ray Powder Diffraction) and IR (Infrared) spectroscopy were applied to investigate the structural properties of the obtained materials. DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) was used to assess the Eu³⁺ ion content on phase transitions in PLLA. The tensile properties were also investigated. The excitation, emission spectra as well as decay time were measured to determine the spectroscopic properties. The simplified Judd–Ofelt (J-O) theory was applied and a detailed analysis in connection with the observed structural and spectroscopic measurements was made and described.
