Effect of Biochar Application Depth on Crop Productivity Under Tropical Rainfed Conditions

Optimising water holding capacity and hydrophobicity of biochar for soil amendment - A review

Biochar is a product of the thermal treatment of biomass, and it can be used for enhancing soil health and productivity, soil carbon sequestration, absorbance of pollutants from water and soil, and promoting environmental sustainability. Extensive research has been done on applications of biochar to enhance the Water Holding Capacity (WHC) of biochar amended soil. However, a comprehensive road map of biochar optimised for enhanced WHC, and reduced hydrophobicity is not yet published. This review is the first to provide not only quantitative information on the impacts of biochar properties in WHC and hydrophobicity, but also a road map to optimise biochar for enhanced WHC when applied as a soil amendment. The review shows that straw or grass-derived biochar (at 500-600 °C) increases the WHC of soil if applied at 1 to 3 % in the soil. It is clear from the review that soil of varying texture requires different particle sizes of biochar to enhance the WHC and reduce hydrophobicity. Furthermore, the review concludes that ageing biochar for at least a year with enhanced oxidation is recommended for improving the WHC and reducing hydrophobicity compared to using biochar immediately after production. Additionally, while producing biochar a residence time of 1 to 2 h is recommended to reduce the biochar's hydrophobicity. Finally, a road map for optimising biochar is presented as a schematic that can be a resource for making decisions during biochar production for soil amendment.

Effects of Biochar on Irrigation Management and Water Use Efficiency for Three Different Crops in a Desert Sandy Soil

This paper aimed at investigating if the application of biochar (BC) to desert sand (DS) from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), characterized by a very poor soil-water retention (SWR) and by a very low value of the maximum water available for crops (AWmax), could positively affect soil water balance, by reducing the irrigation needs (VIRR) and improving the irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) and the water use efficiency (WUE). The analysis was performed for three crops, i.e., wheat (Triticum aestivum), sorghum (Sorghum vulgare) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum). BC was applied to the DS at different fractions, fBC (fBC = 0, 0.091, 0.23 and 0.33). Drip irrigation was adopted as a highly efficient water saving method, which is particularly relevant in arid, water-scarce countries. Soil water balance and irrigation scheduling were simulated by application of the AQUACROP model, using as input the SWR measured without and with BC addition. The effect of BC was investigated under either a no-water stress (NWS) condition for the crops or deficit irrigation (DI). The results showed that the application of BC made it possible to reduce the predicted VIRR and to increase the IWUE under the NWS scenario, especially for wheat and sorghum, with less evident benefits for tomato. When a deficit irrigation (DI) was considered, even at the lowest considered fBC (0.091), BC counterbalanced the lower VIRR provided under DI, thus mitigating the yield reduction due to water stress, and improved the WUE. The influence of BC was more pronounced in wheat and tomato than in sorghum. The results evidenced that the application of BC could be a potential strategy for saving irrigation water and/or reducing the effects of drought stress in desert sand. This means that biochar could be used a management option to promote local production and reduce the dependency on food import, not only in the UAE, but also in other countries with extremely arid climatic conditions and large extensions of sandy soils similar to the considered DS.

Composition Characteristics of Organic Matter and Bacterial Communities under the Alternanthera philoxeroide Invasion in Wetlands

The influence of Alternanthera philoxeroide (alligator weed) invasion on wetland organic matter (OM) accumulation and bacterial changes is rarely studied, but is possibly an important step for revealing the invasion mechanism. Thus, the distribution characteristics of light fraction organic carbon and nitrogen (LFOC and LFON), and heavy fractions organic carbon and nitrogen (HFOC and HFON) were analyzed. Sampling was done on two sediment depths (0–15 cm and 15–25 cm) of invaded and normal habitats of two natural wetlands and two constructed wetlands, and bacterial taxa and composition in surface sediments were also analyzed by high-throughput sequencing. In the surface sediments, the LFOC and LFON contents were significantly higher in the constructed wetlands (0.791 and 0.043 g·kg−1) than in the natural wetlands (0.500 and 0.022 g·kg−1), and the contents of the C and N fractions were also prominently higher in the invaded areas than in normal wetland habitats. The OM storage was relatively stable. Proteobacteria (55.94%), Bacteroidetes (5.74%), Acidobacteria (6.66%), and Chloroflexi (4.67%) were the dominant bacterial phyla in the wetlands. The abundance of Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Gemmatimonadetes were significantly higher in the invaded areas than in the normal habitats. The relative high abundance-based coverage estimator (ACE) index in the constructed wetlands and invaded areas suggested the corresponding high bacterial diversity. The significant and positive relationship between Acidobacteria and organic nitrogen concentrations suggested their potential and positive interrelationships. This study demonstrated that the alligator weed invasion could significantly change the compositions of sediment organic matterand bacteria, thus further changing the nutrition cycle and wetland microhabitat.
